G7 Accuses Iran Of Deadly Tanker Attack Off Oman

0

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven wealthy economies are accusing Iran of threatening international peace and security and that all available evidence showed it was behind an attack on the Mercer Street tanker last week.

A statement, issued by current G7chair, Britain said all available evidence clearly points to Iran adding that there is no justification for this attack. But Tehran has denied any involvement in the suspected drone attack in which two crew members, a Briton and a Romanian, were killed.

Britain raised the issue at a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday. No action is expected to be taken by the 15-member body.

The vessel was a Liberian-flagged, Japanese-owned petroleum product tanker managed by Israeli-owned Zodiac Maritime.

In a separate statement, the US military said explosives experts from the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier – which deployed to assist the Mercer Street – concluded the drone was produced in Iran.

It said the explosives experts were able to recover several pieces of a drone, including a part of the wing and internal components which it said were nearly identical to previously collected samples of Iranian attack drones.

The US military also suggested the attack may have been launched from the Iranian coast, saying the distance to the locations of the attacks “was within the range of documented Iranian one-way attack” drones.

Central Command, which oversees US forces in the region, said in the statement that some of the material was transferred to US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain and subsequently to a US national laboratory for further testing and verification,”.

Court Suspends Extradition Of Burkina Faso’s Compaoré

0

The European Court of Human Rights has suspended the extradition from France to Burkina Faso of François Compaoré, brother of deposed President Blaise Compaoré and a defendant in the 1998 murder of investigative journalist Norbert Zongo.

The ECHR announced it had decided to indicate to the French government, under Article 39″ of the ECHR rules governing “interim measures”, that Mr. Compaoré “should not be extradited to Burkina Faso for the duration of the proceedings before the Court.

The French Council of State had earlier on Friday validated the extradition of François Compaoré to Burkina Faso.

France’s highest administrative court rejected François Compaoré’s appeal against the extradition decree signed in March 2020 by then French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

This decree “grants the extradition of Mr. Compaoré to the Burkinabe authorities for acts of incitement to murder that are not of a political nature,” said in its decision the Council of State.

Norbert Zongo, a well-known investigative journalist and director of the weekly newspaper “L’Indépendant”, was assassinated on December 13, 1998, while investigating the murder of François Compaoré’s driver. His death caused a political crisis in the “country of men of integrity”.

The ECHR has given France until August 3, at 6:00 pm (16:00 GMT) to provide guarantees that Mr. Compaoré is not at risk of torture, among other things.

To date, François Compaoré has not been charged in his country, unlike three former soldiers of the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP), Blaise Compaoré’s former Praetorian Guard.

Hezbollah Fires 19 Rockets At Israel, In Heaviest Barrage Since 2006 War

Nineteen rockets were fired at northern Israel from Lebanon on Friday morning, sending residents in a number of towns in the Golan Heights and Galilee Panhandle scrambling to shelters. The Hezbollah terror group later acknowledged responsibility for the barrage, its heaviest since the 2006 Second Lebanon War.

The Israel Defense Forces said 10 projectiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and six landed in open around Mount Dov. Another three rockets failed to clear the border and landed in Lebanese territory, according to the military.

The alarms sounded shortly before 11 a.m. in Ein Quiniyye, Neveh Ativ and Snir, near Israel’s northern border with Lebanon and Syria

The Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group confirmed it had fired the projectiles, which it said came in response to recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.

“The Islamic Resistance shelled open areas near the Sheba Farms with dozens of 122mm rockets,” Hezbollah said in a statement carried in Arabic-language media.

Thursday’s early morning Israeli airstrikes were in response to a previous rocket attack from Lebanon on Wednesday.

Mapping Territorial Markets: Data Collection, Financial Inclusion In Nigeria,Tanzania – Report

There is a lack of information on markets for sustainable products that are not related to global value chains that must be bridged according to food and agriculture organisation FAO.

However, recent discussions in the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) have highlighted the importance of understanding territorial markets in which small producers, traders, processors and retailers market food, often used sustainable production methods, that are not necessarily publicly recorded.

To understand how food systems can become sustainable and how they can benefit smallholders and ensure food security, we first have to understand how different food systems work. Hence Mapping Territorial Markets

In order to understand where small producers market their products, the relative prices and the type of consumer, the project will be developed in two phases:

FAO article on is website titled Inclusive and Sustainable Territories and Landscapes Platform shows two phases to achieve this:

  • Development of a participatory methodology for the systematic collection of comparable data on territorial markets, capitalizing and enriching the experiences of small producer organizations.
  • Provision of support to small producer organizations that collaborate in the project and that are already collecting data on territorial markets for their specific purposes. Discuss and decide the best way to make the data available in order to create an evidence data base for decision-makers on policies and programs.

Mapping Of Territorial Markets In Tanzania

Data on territorial markets in Tanzania have been collected between July and August 2020.

The data collection process started with a preliminary classification of food retailers active on 17 markets based on three variables: sex, age group and category of products sold. Out of a total of 9577 retailers, a representative sample of 497 food retailers was chosen.

The intention has been, Despite an increasing awareness about the fact that smallholder farmers are responsible for most of the food consumed in the world and most of the investments made in agriculture, there is still lack of data about territorial markets, thus resulting in public policies that give a lot of attention to global value chains while seldom supporting and incentivizing these markets.

Social Protection Strategy Or Financial Inclusion In Nigeria?

The TraderMoni empowerment scheme in Nigeria is a novel government attempt to provide microfinance and complementary economic services through social protection systems. The objective of this programme is to provide small loans to small-scale traders or artisans, groups that usually cannot access loans or credit through banks and traditional financial institutions.

Social protection includes programmes and policies focused on reducing poverty and risk exposure among the poor and vulnerable, who comprise more than 50% of the population in low-and-middle-income-countries, Providing social and financial risk protection for poor and vulnerable populations is a major development and policy issue across the globe and Nigeria is not left out in the campaign.

With TraderMoni, Artisans, Petty traders can receive interest-free loans starting from N10,000 and growing all the way to N100,000 as you pay back. You get N10,000 as the first loan. When you pay back the first loan, you immediately qualify for a second loan of N15,000. After payback of the second loan, you qualify for a N20,000 loan, and then N50,000, and then N100,000.

With TraderMoni, the Federal Government wants to change low income earners level by providing continuous loans for petty business, making each loan bigger to enable them to grow.

But the question remains with the high cost of living and continuous rise in inflation rate, how can these businesses be sustained? When other government policies and geopolitical factors are choking the supposed laudable Social Protection programmes by the federal government.

Sultan Of Sokoto Advocates More Action to Tackle Insecurity

0

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has called on all relevant authorities in Nigeria to work hard in tackling insecurity, hunger, poverty and all the negative vices afflicting Nigeria.

The Sultan made the call during a courtesy call on Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state, on the sideline of the third National Summit of Peaceful Coexistence and Nation Building organized by Da’awah Coordination Council of Nigeria.

He said it was possible to tackle the numerous challenges the country faced at the moment by the will of God, through tolerance and understanding of one another by Nigerians.

He further stated, Nigerians could work together and forge a common front when they understand each other.

According to Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, the selfish interest of a few who manipulate the gullible Nigerians into religious and ethnic violence led Nigeria to its present predicament.

He gave the assurances that his administration would continue to ensure the sustenance of peace, but advised everyone to be cautious of the lawlessness in the country so that at the end of the day it does not consume the nation.

Speaking at the Peace Summit, where many Christian clergies and laymen, as well as traditional rulers, were invited, the Sultan spoke extensively about the socio-economic challenges bedeviling the country, saying the issue of hunger should be addressed squarely, “because a hungry man is an angry man.”

Sultan Abubakar charged both Muslim and Christian clerics to preach and practice what the Holy Books prescribed for the peaceful coexistence of the society.

The President and Founder, Al-Ansar Foundation, Dr. Mohammed Kyari Dikwa, emphasized the theme of the summit and it being sensitive, important and timely and relevant to the current challenges facing Nigeria.

He is convinced that the issue of peaceful co-existence and nation-building would be tackled from various perspectives, through the presentations by different groups and personalities during the summit, consequently urging participants to be open-minded to learn new ways and approaches of tackling the mistrust among different ethnic groups and religious beliefs.

Dr. Dikwa said the peaceful co-existence and nation-building is a collective responsibility of every citizen and the responsibility of leaders is to bridge the gap and reduce the factors that can mitigate this.

Oyo State to Begin Residents’ Registration Monday

0

The Oyo State Government says the pilot phase of the Residents’ Registration Programme is to kick off on Monday, August 9, 2021.

The Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on ICT, Mr. Bayo Akande, disclosed, in a statement made public on Friday, that the programme would begin with commercial transport workers (motorcycle, tricycle, Micra and bus drivers) at various locations in Ibadan, the state’s capital.

“Once the pilot phase is concluded successfully, we intend going on to other sectors across the entire LGAs in the state,” Akande said.

He noted that one of the benefits of starting with the transport sector is that it would give Oyo State the opportunity to deal with the security concerns that usually emanate from the sector.

According to Akande, officials involved in the registration would issue identification cards to every motorcycle and tricycle rider, as well as reflective jackets customized with each rider’s unique registration number.

He stated: “As of the 6th of August, 2021; the first training of enumerators has begun. The trainees include officers of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency, OYRTMA, and staff of MIC, as supervisors. The consultants in charge of the project will guide them through the process of registering individuals onto the platform. The OYRTMA officers will also act as enforcers of the project for their sector after registration is completed.”

“For security during the process, we have engaged with the Amotekun Commandant such that officers of the Amotekun Corps will be present at each registration point. Location of each of these registration points for the pilot phase will be shared accordingly,” Akande noted.

He disclosed that some of the benefits of the scheme include access to government incentives, health and vehicle insurance, amongst others, adding that the benefits are unquantifiable, especially in the areas of health and security.
