Olympic Update: Nigeria’s Enekwechi, Women Relay Team Crash In Tokyo

2

Nigeria’s search for more medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games did not yield any fruit yesterday as a shot putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and the women’s 4×100 metres relay team could not make the podium.

Nigeria had earlier in the competition won a silver medal through wrestler, Blessing Oborodudu and long jumper, Ese Brume.

Followers of the events in Tokyo always knew that it would take a miracle for Enekwechi and the relay girls to add to Nigeria’s medals due to their low ranking among the contestants.

Enekwechi was eliminated in the final round of the men’s shot put after throwing 19.74 metres to finish last in the 12-man contest, while the relay team could not go beyond the second preliminary round of the 4×100 metres.

Nigeria’s ambassador to Japan, Abubakar Moriki Husaini, hosted Team Nigeria in his residence in appreciation of their efforts at the Games.

Ambassador Husaini, in the company of his staff, thanked the contingent, especially the medallists, for making the country proud during the Olympics 2020.

The apex bank said the recovery was based on verified complaints as of June this year.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who made the disclosure recently in Calabar at the CBN Fair, observed that since customers have rights to redress, they should, without fail, report infractions.

In two weeks, the troops – the first foreign force to be deployed against the insurgents – have taken a key road junction, held by the militants for the past year, and have reached the port town of Mocímboa da Praia.

In four years the insurgents have taken control of most of five districts in Cabo Delgado province in the north east of Mozambique.

Mosquito-Repelling Plants that Are Easy To Grow In Any Garden

0

When it comes to choosing plants for your backyard garden, going for ones that can help ward off hungry insects isn’t a bad idea. Here are five low-maintenance plant species that double as natural mosquito repellers:

1. Basil

A wonderful addition to your backyard and your cooking (homemade pesto, anyone?), basil has long been used as an insect repellent.

It requires full sun and regular moisture to grow, according to Marc Hachadourian, the director of glasshouse horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden.

Be sure to clip back and prune your plant from time to time, too, as this will encourage the continued growth of its yummy basil leaves.

2. Lantanas

This annual has gorgeous flowers, attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, and also repels mosquitoes. Perfect for a pop of color, it needs full sun, regular water, and fertilizer.

3. Mint

Mint is another great herb to grow in the garden, and Hachadourian notes its fragrant oils can be used to repel mosquitoes. Be sure to plant it either in a large container or sectioned off in the garden, as it can spread quite quickly. Then, all it needs is full sun and regular watering.

4. Lavender

Lavender’s fragrance is smooth and relaxing to humans, but off-putting to mosquitoes! Lavender plants make for a great addition to any backyard, but they require some maintenance.

They need full sun and well-drained, sandy soils since they can get finicky with too much water. “Prune back after flowering to encourage new growth,” Hachadourian adds.

5. Cymbopogons

Last but not least, citronella oil from the Cymbopogon (lemongrass) family has long been a standby for its mosquito-repelling properties.

Even watering and good sunlight are best for Cymbopogons, according to Hachadourian, and they can handle a little drying out between watering. He recommends using the aromatic grass as a foliage accent in mixed flower containers for some added texture.

Why certain plants repel mosquito:

Hachadourian explains that many plants likely evolved mosquito-repelling compounds as a self-defense mechanism.

“Many plant extracts from plants as wide and unrelated as cedar, basil, lantana, beautyberry, lavender, eucalyptus, mint, and even breadfruit have shown promise as natural insect repellents in studies with varying degrees of success,” he says.

These plants produce a wide variety of antifungal, anti-herbivore, and anti-insect compounds that fend off different types and species of bugs—some of which can stunt their growth or carry plant viruses.

Can plants replace bug spray?

These five plants may be able to lend a helping hand for keeping mosquitoes at bay, but wearing bug spray is still important.

“Any of the plants that possess the natural oils will only really be effective in small areas, and one plant will not drive hungry mosquitoes away from you and your yard completely,” Hachadourian notes.

So to maximize your mosquito-repelling potential, your best bet would be to wear bug spray, light a citronella candle or two, and position your new plants near where you usually like to sit outside.

The bottom line:

With a few easy additions to your garden, you can freshen up the aesthetic and limit mosquitoes at the same time. However, even if you have all of these backyard beauties, applying bug spray is still recommended during the height of summer.

Senate, Reps appeal to Resident Doctors to consider Nigerians and call off strike

0

Both the Senate and House of Representatives have jointly called on the resident doctors to call of their strike and return to negotiation table with the federal government.

The Resident Doctors under the aegis of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) resumed strike on Monday August 2, 2021.

Already, the strike action is affecting medical services at various government-owned hospitals.

Senate committee chairman on health Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe who spoke at the flag-off of a public health sensitisation campaign organised by the National Agency Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said the impact of doctors’ strike on the overall health of Nigeria was enormous.

According to him, “Medical doctors are critical to the nation’s health. I urge them to consider the generality of Nigerians and call off the ongoing strike.

Already, the federal government has commenced discussions with the doctors and hopefully it will continue in order to reach a good conclusion.

Also, speaking, the chairman house committee on health services, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, appealed to doctors to end the ongoing strike.

NAFDAC DG, Prof. Moji Adeyeye while highlighting the essence of the sensitisation campaign explained that the exercise will start on August 9 and end on October 9, 2021.

The sensitisation campaigns is poised to contribute significantly to Federal Government’s concerted efforts to inform, sensitize, educate and alert the public about inherent dangers of intake and use of spurious regulated products.

President Jacob Zuma Admitted For Medical Observation

0

South Africa’s Correctional Services department in a statement carried on Twitter on August 6, 2021 says jailed former President Jacob Zuma has been admitted to an outside hospital for medical observation.

The department says the healthcare needs of the former president “require the involvement of the South African Military Health Services… A routine observation prompted that Zuma is to be taken for in-hospitalisation.”

Zuma was admitted to a correctional facility in Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal province almost a month ago to start serving a 15-month jail sentence handed to him by the Constitutional Court for contempt of court.

The 79-year-old, 1st prisoner of the ConCourt, jailed without trial is attending his annual medical routine check-up.

The Jacob Zuma Foundation confirmed the statement by Correctional Services that the former president is in Hospital outside the prison while informing the public that there is no need to be alarmed, yet.

The hospitalisation comes days after the Pietermaritzburg High Court issued a directive that an in-person hearing involving the president would be heard in open court rather than virtually. Further reports show that Zuma’s lawyers have said that the court’s proposal for a virtual hearing of Zuma’s special plea application in his arms deal corruption trial is a violation of the former president’s right to a fair trial. The hearing is set for August 10, 2021.

Foods That May Damage Your Teeth

The foods and beverages that you include in your diet all affect your teeth and gums.

While some foods and beverages promote healthy teeth and gums, others may lead to tooth decay, erosion, and the development of oral disease. in this article we will be looking at some foods and drinks that may damage the teeth.

1. Soda, diet soda, and sweetened beverages

Sugary beverages like soda, sweetened coffee drinks, and energy drinks have a slew of negative effects on health. They promote cardiovascular disease, weight gain, insulin resistance, and more. Thus, it may come as no surprise that sugary drinks are also harmful to your teeth and gums.

These beverages affect your teeth in two harmful ways: They are acidic and they provide fuel for cavity-promoting bacteria. Cavity-promoting bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans, feed on sugar and produce acids that demineralize or break down tooth enamel.

So, acidic, sugary drinks like cola deliver a one-two punch to your teeth. Not only are they naturally acidic, but they also lead to further acid production.

Research shows that soft drinks and sugary beverages are extremely erosive to your teeth. In fact, frequently consuming acidic carbonated drinks like soda and sports drinks is considered a main dietary factor in dental erosion. Though some people may think diet soda is a better choice for oral health, this is not the case.

In fact, diet cola has been shown to be even more erosive to tooth enamel than regular Coca-Cola. Researchers suggest that diet cola may actually be more erosive to teeth because it contains citric acid, which binds to calcium and removes it from the teeth.

Holding or swishing soda and other acidic beverages in your mouth may be especially problematic, as this increases the time that the acidic substance is in contact with your teeth.

Experts say you should also avoid brushing your teeth right after drinking acidic beverages, like soda, because your enamel is vulnerable to damage.

Consuming cola, sports drinks, and other acidic beverages regularly could lead to irreversible damage to your teeth. Plus, studies have shown that in young adults, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with dental caries, or cavities, which is a major contributor to tooth loss.

For this reason, it’s best to avoid or limit sugary, acidic beverages as much as possible

2. Table sugar, candy, and other sources of added sugar

As mentioned above, sugar feeds harmful bacteria in your mouth, which leads to the production of acids that break down tooth enamel.

This is why dietary added sugar intake is considered the most important risk factor for cavities.

Keep in mind that natural sugars found in foods like fruits and dairy products have not been shown to significantly contribute to dental cavities.

This is because sources of natural sugars provide protective compounds, like fiber and minerals, and stimulate salivary flow in the mouth, which helps protect the teeth and gums.

On the other hand, added sugars like high fructose corn syrup and table sugar can significantly contribute to the development of cavities and poor oral health.

Numerous studies have shown that children and adults with diets high in added sugar have a significantly greater risk of cavities and gum disease.

Sucking on candies like lollipops, caramels, and sweetened lozenges is one of the worst things you can do for your teeth. This practice increases the time that your teeth are exposed to sugar, which is a key factor in the development of cavities.

Eating a lot of added sugar can also harm your gums by contributing to increased inflammation and oxidative stress, which can damage gum tissue. A 2014 study that included data from 2,437 young adults found that eating added sugar frequently was associated with a greater risk of gum disease.

3. Sugary cereal and baked sweets

Many people start their day off with a bowl of sugary cereal or an icing-covered donut.

Not only will these food choices leave you feeling hungry in an hour or so due to their lack of protein and other important nutrients, but these foods are high in added sugar and refined carbs, which are not good for your teeth.

Some cereals and sugary baked goods contain several teaspoons worth of added sugar per serving, which can contribute to dental erosion and gum disease.

Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals and grain-based sweets are some of the top contributors of added sugar intake in children and adolescents ages 6–19.

If you frequently reach for a breakfast food high in added sugar, like sweetened breakfast cereals or pastries, try switching to a more nutritious, low sugar breakfast. Here are a couple of ideas:

a bowl of plain oatmeal topped with nut butter and berries

an egg and veggie omelet with avocado

4. Alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic beverages, especially drinks made with added sugar and acidic ingredients, are not good for dental health.

Alcohol use is considered an important risk factor for oral cancer because it affects the permeability of the lining of the mouth, making it more vulnerable to potential cancer-promoting substances.

In fact, studies have shown that increased alcohol intake is associated with a greater risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx.

What’s more, alcohol may cause dry mouth, increase acidity in the mouth, increase cravings for highly palatable, processed foods, and change the balance of oral bacteria, all of which may cause tooth damage.

Studies show that people with alcohol use disorder are at a higher risk of developing cavities, gum disease, and gum lesions.

Plus, people with alcohol use disorder may be less likely to seek regular dental care, which can lead to dental issues.

If you drink, do so in moderation and limit drinks made with added sugar and highly acidic ingredients.

5. Excessively sticky or hard foods

Some foods may increase the chances of chipping a tooth or pulling out a filling.

For example, crunching on hard foods, like hard pretzels or hard candies, may cause you to chip a tooth. A 2021 study that included 56 people found that eating hard foods was significantly related to the number of cracked teeth found in participants. If chewing ice is your habit that may also contribute to cracked teeth.

Additionally, sticky candies like caramel and taffy can stick to teeth and may increase the chance of pulling out dental fillings. Plus, sticky candies can increase the risk of dental erosion.

What is important is taking good care of your oral health which means limiting or avoiding certain foods and beverages. Examples include: soda, alcoholic beverages, acidic fruit-based ice pops, candy and sugary breakfast cereals

These foods and drinks may increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, chipped teeth, and even diseases like oral cancer.

To promote optimal oral health and protect your teeth, avoid or reduce your intake of the foods and beverages listed above. Instead, consider following a diet rich in nutritious whole foods.
