Anthony Joshua Versus Oleksandr Usyk Confirmed For Tottenham On 25 September

0

Joshua had been poised to fight Tyson Fury, which would have seen all four heavyweight titles on the line for the first time

Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title defence against Oleksandr Usyk will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 25 September.

Joshua, 31, will risk his IBF, WBA and WBO belts against the Ukrainian, who is his mandatory challenger.

Usyk, 34, has not fought for a title as a heavyweight but held all four belts a division lower at cruiserweight.

Joshua was ordered to defend his WBO title after the collapse of his bout with fellow Briton Tyson Fury.

“We are two Olympic gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges,” Joshua said.

“The venue is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe-inspiring venue. The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.”

Despite months of negotiations, a fight between Joshua and WBC world champion Fury for all four belts failed to materialise.

Joshua called Fury “a fraud” after their proposed meeting on 14 August in Saudi Arabia was called off.

Fury will face American Deontay Wilder, who he defeated to become a two-time world heavyweight champion in his most recent bout in February 2020, for a third time in Las Vegas on 24 July.

Former undisputed world cruiserweight champion Usyk has 18 wins from 18 bouts.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has a capacity of over 60,000, although vaccination proof may be required to attend sports events of about 20,000 or more capacity by the end of September.

UK Demands Answers On Nigerian Separatist’s Arrest

0

The United Kingdom has asked Nigeria to explain where and how a Nigerian separatist leader, who holds British citizenship, was arrested.

Nnamdi Kanu – the leader of the group Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) – was on the run outside Nigeria for four years until he was brought to court in the capital Abuja last month to face several charges including treason.

His lawyer says he was detained and mistreated in Kenya before being extradited.

A junior minister in Britain’s Foreign Office, Tariq Ahmad, said the UK government was seeking clarification from the Nigerian government about the circumstances of Kanu’s arrest and detention.

Meanwhile, colleagues of a Yoruba separatist leader – known as Sunday Igboho – say he has been arrested in neighbouring Benin.

Peru Elections: Pedro Castillo Declared President

Former school teacher Pedro Castillo has won the disputed election in Peru and will become the country’s next president, election officials said.

The presidential vote, which had taken place on June 6, had been held up by claims of election fraud by his right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori.

Castillo had led unofficially by a narrow margin of 44,000 votes. The Organization of American States, the European Union, Canada, Britain and the US State Department had all maintained that the elections were clean.

But Fujimori, the daughter of imprisoned former President Alberto Fujimori, challenged the count.

On Monday, however, she said she was going to recognize the official results because it was mandated by “the law and the constitution that I have sworn to defend.” At the same time, she restated her claim that thousands of votes have been stolen and urged her supporters to continue protests.

She added the truth was “going to come out anyway.”

This is Fujimori’s third attempt to claim Peru’s highest office. The 46-year-old has been hounded by corruption charges over her two earlier presidential bids. She now faces an imminent graft trial that would otherwise be delayed until after her presidential term.

With the outcome of the election in the balance, people took to the streets to support their candidates

The National Jury of Elections (JNE), the official election body, rejected the final five appeals presented by Fujimori’s Popular Force party last week.

Castillo is expected to take office next week for a five-year term.

“I ask that Keiko Fujimori not place barriers in the way, so that we may move forward and make this a government of all Peruvians,” he said.

Peru has been rocked by protests for over a month as ardent supporters of both camps took to the streets and electoral officials delayed on naming the winner.

The 51-year-old Castillo, born to illiterate peasants in rural Peru, saw enthusiastic support from his rural base. Hundreds of his voters came from the countryside to the capital, Lima, to camp outside the office of the JNE last month.

Similarly, Fujimori was endorsed by members of right and center-right parties and retired military personnel. During their marches, her supporters had held up banners that read “no to communism,” in reference to Castillo’s leftist ideas.

Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa Government Buys Israel-Made Spy Software

3

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has reportedly acquired the controversial mobile phone snooping equipment from Israeli surveillance company NSO Group, in 2019 for use by the Central Intelligence Organisation.

The revelations have given rise to fears that government, which has openly expressed interest in snooping on mobile phones through enacting enabling legislation, was targeting opposition politicians, rights activists and journalists, especially in the run-up to the 2023 general election.

The mobile malware allows state spy agents to track activities on mobile phones without the knowledge and consent of the users.

It also allows them to penetrate applications like WhatsApp which have end-to-end encryptions.

The investigations principally found out that rights activists, journalists and lawyers around the world were been targeted with phone malware sold to authoritarian governments by an Israeli surveillance firm.

The malware by the name Pegasus reportedly infects iPhones and Android devices to enable operators to extract messages, photos and emails, record calls and secretly activate microphones.

“It’s not very clear yet if the software has been used, but it’s there,” the source added.

However, Information ministry permanent secretary Nick Mangwana refuted the claims.

“Government of Zimbabwe has no reason to buy malicious software,” he said.

“The report says it was sold to autocratic governments; government of Zimbabwe is not autocratic. So, Zimbabwe is automatically excluded. Any attempt to associate us with the purchase and delivery of that malware is malicious. So those are malicious allegations,” he added.

NSO has also denied what it called “false claims”.

Zimbabwean Government Secures U.S.$1m For Former Farmers

Zimbabwean Government has secured US$1 million that will go towards the payment of compensation to white former farm owners as agreed in the Global Compensation Deed signed last year.

Government signed the GCD with the former farmers whose land was gazetted for resettlement of landless indigenous Zimbabweans.

In a statement, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube confirmed the development saying the money was secured from a dividend paid on Government’s shareholding in Kuvimba Mining House.

The first dividend from this long term shareholding was paid on June 23.

“An amount of USD1 million was declared in favour of the fund for compensating former farm owners and this amount will be applied towards partial settlement of the agreed global compensation figure.

“Subsequently dividends will be paid quarterly and applied in the same manner,” Minister Ncube said in the statement.

The Presidential race in Sao Tome and Principe will head into a run-off after the two main contenders failed to garner enough votes.

Carlos Vila Nova and Guilherme Posser da Costa will contest in the Sao Tome and Principe run-off of the presidential polls in August 8, the country’s National Electoral Commission (CEN) announced Monday.

Nova, who was supported by the main opposition party, ADI (Independent Democratic Action) and da Costa by the ruling MLSTP/ PSD (Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Príncipe – Social Democratic Party) were among the 19 candidates for the presidential polls Sunday. One of them will be the country’s fifth president.

Incumbent Evaristo Carvalho,80, opted out running for the second term in office.

In a short press briefing, without questions from journalists, CEN head Fernando Maquengo announced provisional results of each of the 19 candidates and made it clear that no one reached an absolute majority Sunday.

Carlos Vila Nova got 32,022 votes corresponding to 39.47 percent of the total valid votes while Guilherme Posser da Costa, got 16,829 corresponding to 20.70 percent

According to CEN, abstention was 32, 24 percent, in a total of just over 123,000 voters in the country and in the diaspora.

The Sunday elections were the seventh poll since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

According to CEN, 123, 302 voters were registered to cast their ballots in 262 polling stations across the Portuguese-speaking archipelago of 200,000 inhabitants.

Mali Says President Assimi Goita Survives Assassination Attempt

Mali’s interim President Assimi Goita survived a knife attack on Tuesday, according to the government.

The incident occurred at the great mosque, in the capital Bamako, during prayers for the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, meaning “Festival of the Sacrifice.”

Goita had since been taken from the scene, while an official at the presidency said he was unharmed.

Religious Affairs Minister Mamadou Kone told the news agency that a man had “tried to kill the president with a knife” but was apprehended.

“The attacker was immediately subdued by security,” the presidency’s official Twitter account posted. “Investigations are ongoing.”

The attack follows months of political turmoil in Mali, which is also battling an Islamist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

In June, Colonel Goita was sworn in as the transitional president after leading an internationally condemned coup. It was the second time he had led such a coup, after a similar putsch in August 2020.

The initial coup, orchestrated by Goita and other army officers, ousted elected president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita after weeks of mass protests over corruption and the long-running conflict.

Ethiopia’s First Innovative Travel And Leisure Platform Launched

0

Startup studio 1888EC has unveiled Triopia, the country’s first travel and leisure platform aimed at creating digital solutions and job opportunities within Ethiopia’s tourism sector.

Developed in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the platform was launched at the opening of 1888EC’s headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Triopia harnesses the impact that digital tools have had on tourism. While globally, many travellers plan their trips using online travel agencies (OTAs), digitally user‐generated content (UGC) and other digital tools, Ethiopia’s tourism digital services have remained in an infancy stage.

Countries that have not taken advantage of digital tourism services are lagging both in attracting visitors and generating increased revenue from tourism.

In Ethiopia, a few attempts have been made by the private sector, particularly in the hotel industry, to utilize digital platforms for bookings and sales.

Additionally, before the advent of Triopia, the only platforms available in the country were owned by foreign companies resulting in high service fees paid in foreign currencies.

Triopia is an innovative and user-friendly platform that allows visitors to access more tourist destinations.

Its goal is to encourage travel throughout Ethiopia to stimulate economic growth.

Tourists can easily find lodgings and promotional packages are offered to stimulate travel in the country.

Its features and services include a trusted app with information tracking, access to verified tour guides, accommodation bookings, a best local attraction locator, local experience offerings, and many other options.

The platform will showcase a diverse pool of vendors, including travel and tour service providers, vetted and trained drivers, tour guides, translators, and even local experience buddies.

It will curate from existing service providers as well as onboard and train new providers. It will also recruit freelancers and train them to provide quality customer service.

0

The increase rate of poverty in Gombe state has reinforced the chain between malnutrition and the socio-economic development of people.

The Secretary to Gombe State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, said when a delegation from the Accelerating Nutrition Result in Nigeria (ARiN), project, led by Omotayo Adeyemi, the Director of Social Development, Federal Ministry of Finance and Budget Planning paid him a courtesy visit in Gombe, that the high rate of poverty is fuelling malnutrition in Gombe state.

However, the SSG noted that the Gombe State government is working assiduously to get a sustainable partnership to address the challenge.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Budget, Planning and Donor Coordination, Ishiyaku Mohammed, said ARiN is working across all sectors.

The production of 30,000 complimentary foods for moderately malnourished children by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation is the first of its kind in the country.

Omotayo Adeyemi revealed that, the ARiN project is a five-year initiative aimed at improving nutrition in Nigeria, noting that Gombe is one of the implementing states.

The project is being piloted across Nafada, Balanga, and Yalmatu Deba in Gombe.

ARiN came in as an intervention project and Gombe happens to be one of the states for its implementation and the only state in the North East.

“We have been to the ministries of Education, Finance, the State House of Assembly to solicit for their support in the appropriation of nutrition budget line. The State House of Assembly has also promised to create a new committee on nutrition,” he added

Students And Teachers Defy Separatists School Lockdown – Cameroon

Authorities in Cameroon said at least 70,000 schoolchildren and their teachers have returned to classrooms this year in the troubled western regions.

The schools had been abandoned due to threats from English-speaking rebels, who see them as an arm of the French-speaking-majority’s rule.

Fourteen-year-old Clementine Fua said this year, she braved threats from separatists and successfully went to school in her hometown Njinikom, in the English-speaking Northwest region. Fua said separatists deprived her of education for three years.

Cameroon’s ministries of basic and secondary education said Fua is one of 70,000 students who returned to more than 400 re-opened schools this year in the Northwest and Southwest regions.

government official in charge of basic education in the Northwest, Wilfred Wambeng Ndong, said the number of children who took their First School Leaving exams this year increased dramatically.

Ndong said in 2020, 12,786 candidates sat for the First School Leaving and Common Entrance while in 2021 had 27,128 candidates sitting for the exams which meant the number almost doubled.

Ngwang Roland Yuven who is in charge of secondary education in the Northwest region, said the number of kids taking secondary school exams also increased.

Yuven said the success recorded this year might motivate parents to send their children back to school, despite continued threats from separatist militants.

The separatists attacked or set fire to more than 200 schools between 2017 and 2019, and nearly all schools in the North and Southwest regions shut down, as teachers left their jobs due to insecurity.

An education secretary of schools owned by the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Nji Samuel Kale, said everyone involved — students, parents, teachers and security forces — has shown great commitment to making sure the schools stay open.
