Francophone University Agency: Egypt Wins Membership Of Board Of Directors

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar says Egypt has won membership of the newly-formed board of directors of the Francophone University Agency (AUF).

He said that the decision was endorsed by the Permanent Council of La Francophonie after his ministry nominated Cairo for the membership.

Abdel Ghaffar hailed efforts exerted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to guarantee a seat for Egypt in the AUF new board of directors.

In a statement by the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry, Abdel Ghaffar pointed out that this move crowns the cooperation efforts launched by his ministry which resulted in signing a framework with the agency in May.

This agreement was followed by a deal for establishing a branch for the agency in Cairo to offer all forms of support to the Egyptian universities, the minister said.

This is the first time for Egypt to be a member in the AUF board of directors since its establishment in 1961, he added.

Health Agency insists Nigeria’s Wild Polio Virus-Free Status Not under Threat

0

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) says Nigeria’s Wild Polio Virus-free status is not under threat.

The Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib who gave the assurances in a statement issued in Abuja stressed that since the verification and certification, there have been no cases of WPV isolated anywhere in the country.

“Nigeria and the African region were certified WPV-free on August 2020 and therefore, the polio-free status of the country is not in any way under threat. The attention of NPHCDA has been drawn to reports in some sections of the media claiming that there is an outbreak of a new polio variant in some states. This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts. For the avoidance of doubt, no case of WPV has been reported anywhere in the country since the last case in 2016.”

He further explained that “What is being misconstrued for an outbreak of WPV is the detection, through our robust disease surveillance system of 22 cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis, spread across seven (7) States (Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara). These non-wild polio viruses originated as a result of normal changes in the reproduction of viruses. These viruses are not as virulent as WPV and are also being reported in other countries. Working with our donors and development partners, Nigeria has already acquired new tools and resources to ensure these viruses are contained.”

The NPHCDA boss however assured Nigerians that the Agency and partners would continue to conduct surveillance and vaccination campaigns in order to prevent and contain any possible importation of the Wild Polio Virus.

It would be recalled that Nigeria was the last country in African to be certified Wild Polio Virus (WPV)-free in 2020, following a rigorous verification and certification process by the African Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (ARCC) which spanned 3 years of no detection of WPV.

The survivor who made a pelage to enrol patients into the NHIS with the proceeds of the launch also said, “later on I plan creating a Sickle Cell hub where patients can have access to psychologists and counsellors to discuss their worries and fears. 400,000 enrols into Contributory Health Management Scheme in Kaduna State

0

A total of 400, 000 Kaduna citizens from across the 23 Local Government Areas have been enrolled into the Kaduna Contributory Health Management Authority (KADCHMA) scheme.

Dr Juliana Dauda B, Head Operations Department, (KADCHMA) said in an interview that, about 46,000 vulnerable people have also been enrolled into the scheme from across the 23 LGAs.

The scheme was passed into law in 2018 by the Kaduna State government to provide health care services to the residents at very subsidized rates and qualitative manner.

It led to the establishment of KADCHMA, with the mandate of delivering and operating the contributory health scheme itself.

“Right from the inception, since it was established, we’ve followed through on our key mandate and have been able to enrol a total of over 400,000 currently released to the scheme from the formal sectors, informal and vulnerable components of the population of Kaduna state,” Juliana said.

“Currently every Ward in each LGA of the state has at least one facility providing services for the enrollee which met service provision of equitable access for service provisions for citizens.

Dr. Juliana called on residents of the state to avail themselves of the scheme for the huge benefits they stand to achieve.

People are excited about the scheme but some have reservations about the scheme in terms of newness, people are skeptical in joining the scheme on sustainability, the premium goes by the economic status of most people.

The premium for an individual is N10, 650 per annum, and for the family plan, a family of 6 is N57, 950 per annum. So one of the challenges or the constraint to the take-up of these two by the informal sector is the premium itself.

US States Sue Google Over App Store Monopoly

0

Dozens of US states joined forces in a lawsuit accusing Google of abusing its power when it comes to getting apps for Android-powered mobile devices.

The litigation aimed at the Play Store online shop for apps and other digital content for Android smartphones comes as the power of Big Tech firms is facing increasing pressure from regulators and lawsuits.

New York attorney general Letitia James, a leader of the litigation said they are filing this lawsuit to end Google’s illegal monopoly power and finally give voice to millions of consumers and business owners.

James said the company has ensured that hundreds of millions of Android users turn to Google, and only Google, for the millions of applications they may choose to download to their phones and tablets.

The lawsuit backed by 37 attorneys general accuses Google of using anti-competitive tactics to discourage Android apps from being distributed at shops other than its Play store, where its payment system collects commissions on transactions.

The lawsuit contends that Google has inserted itself as “the middleman” between app developers and consumers.

Meanwhile, a verdict is being awaited in a federal suit in which Fortnite maker Epic Games accused Apple of abusing monopoly power at it App Store.

However, Google rejected accusations in the suit as meritless, detailing ways that the Play Store has helped app makers thrive while providing security for Android device users.

The actions come amid growing concerns over the power of major tech firms, which have increasingly dominated key economic sectors and have seen steady growth during the pandemic.

Illegal Migrants Avoid Prosecution As CPS Targets Smugglers

0

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) says migrants entering Britain illegally will no longer face prosecution, as it vowed to go after the smugglers instead.

It comes as record numbers of migrants continue to cross the Channel, with 6,000 already this year, double the numbers in 2020, itself a record year.

Prosecutors have been advised not to seek to charge passengers reaching the UK in either small boats or lorries as they often had no choice in how they travelled or were victims of exploitation by traffickers.

However, smugglers, repeat offenders and those who had previously been deported should be targeted for prosecution.

The agreement struck between police, prosecutors, the National Crime Agency, Border Force and the Home Office over cases involving “illegal entry” will also apply to those arriving by lorry.

Fresh guidance published on Thursday also sets out the circumstances when criminal charges may be considered for those bringing migrants to the UK while posing a risk to their lives.

The CPS said the guidance, published on Thursday, confirmed that “individuals who have played a significant role in people-smuggling, including those who organise and pilot dangerous boat crossings across the English Channel, can expect to face prosecution where this is supported by the evidence.

The setting out of the advice not to prosecute in such stark terms could prove embarrassing for the Home Office which this week unveiled its Borders and Nationality Bill increasing the penalty for illegally entering Britain from a maximum six months in jail to four years.

US President Biden Sets Aug. 31 For Military Exit From Afghanistan

0

US President Joe Biden says the military operation in Afghanistan will end on Aug. 31, delivering an impassioned argument for exiting the nearly 20-year war without sacrificing more American lives.

Biden acknowledged there will be no “mission accomplished” moment to celebrate but also noted that it remains unlikely the government would control all of Afghanistan after the U.S. leaves.

He urged the Afghan government and Taliban, which he said remains as formidable as it did before the start of the war, to come to a peace agreement.

The administration in recent days has sought to frame ending the conflict as a decision that Biden made after concluding it’s an “unwinnable war” and one that “does not have a military solution.

On Thursday he amplified the justification of his decision even as the Taliban make rapid advances in significant swaths of the country.

The new withdrawal date comes after former President Donald Trump’s administration negotiated a deal with the Taliban to end the U.S. military mission by May 1.

Biden after taking office announced U.S. troops would be out by by the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack, which al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden plotted from Afghanistan, where he had been given refuge by the Taliban.

With U.S. and NATO ally forces rapidly drawing down in the past week, there was growing speculation that U.S. combat operations have already effectively ended.
