Belgium Begins Process To Returning Looted Congolese Art Works

Belgium’s Africa museum, once a celebration of the country’s colonial rule, will begin a multi-year process of returning stolen art to Democratic Republic of Congo, the Belgian government has said.

From the late 19th century to 1960, thousands of art works including wooden statues, elephant ivory masks, manuscripts and musical instruments were likely taken by Belgian and other European collectors, scientists, explorers and soldiers.

Following a 66-million-euro ($78 million) overhaul of the Africa museum to take a more critical view of Belgium’s colonial past, the government is ready to meet DRC calls for restitution.

Millions of Congolese are estimated to have died from the late 19th century when Congo was first a personal fiefdom of king Leopold II, before becoming a colony of the Belgian state.

Belgium will transfer legal ownership of the artefacts to DRC but it will not immediately ship art works to the country from the museum in Tervuren, just outside Brussels, unless they are specifically requested by DRC authorities.

That is partly because the museum, which has proved popular since its renovation and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors before the pandemic, wants to keep artefacts on display. One option is to pay a loan fee to DRC.

Belgium says the Congolese authorities are conscious of the bigger audience in Belgium compared to DRC; it has few cultural centres or storage facilities.

“The museum believes it will be able to cooperate with the Congolese authorities, as is common among international institutions, to keep the objects in Belgium via loan agreements,” said museum director Guido Gryseels.

Steven Gerrard’s men will begin the defence of the league title against Livinston on Saturday, July 31.

People Of Syria With Tongue Of Jesus Prepare For Returning Pilgrims

In the ancient Syrian village of Maalula, whose inhabitants still speak the language of Jesus; volunteers razed stones and rubbed graffiti to prepare for the return of Christian pilgrims after years of war

Nestled among towering cliffs in the mountains north of Damascus, Maalula is one of the world’s oldest Christian settlements.

Before Syria’s war, it drew in thousands of visitors a year — including former US president Jimmy Carter and late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez — to visit its churches and monasteries and to hear its inhabitants speak Aramaic.

But from 2011 onwards, a devastating conflict largely kept pilgrims away from the village, whose name in Aramaic means “entrance”, after the narrow passage between its limestone cliffs.

Legend has it that in the first century Saint Taqla, a young woman, escaped an arranged marriage to a pagan and ran away from her home to lead a Christian life.

With Roman soldiers in hot pursuit, she reached a dead end in the mountains, but when she prayed, a passage opened in the rock face, leading into a cave.

She lived there for the rest of her life, curing the sick with water from a sacred spring, near the site of today’s Saint Taqla Greek Orthodox convent.

In the narrow pass at the foot of the canyon, men have been working in the summer heat to prepare the site for visitors in time for Assumption on August 15.

Nearby, on the side of the winding 500-metre canyon leading to the Saint Taqla convent, the Arabic word “message” and a heart were still visible, both in red paint.

Rebels and jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda seized Maalula in the autumn of 2013, forcing most of its Christian inhabitants to flee.

Syria’s then-Al-Qaeda affiliate kidnapped 13 nuns from the Saint Taqla convent but they were released in a prisoner swap with the Damascus authorities in March 2014. Regime forces recaptured Maalula the following month.

Christiano Ronaldo’s New Hotel Complex Described As Cosmopolitan

0

Cristiano Ronaldo has launched his latest hotel complex which is located in New York on Times Square.

The Portugal and Juventus superstar has previously launched hotels in Madeira, Lisbon and Madrid, with the latter opening up last month.

Ronaldo took to social media on Wednesday to reveal the Pestana CR7 hotel in midtown Manhattan, his first outside of Europe.

Cristiano Ronaldo wrote on Twitter:
What a magical date – 07.07 to introduce you to my new hotel @PestanaCR7 Times Square, in New York.

Ronaldo’s new complex is described as a cosmopolitan hotel which is ‘faithful to a sophisticated, vibrant and ever-connected sporty lifestyle’.

Pestana’s website says it is ‘the ideal starting point for those who don’t want to miss out on the action of the city’.

Ronaldo has taken some inspiration from home, as the guest rooms are influenced by the colours and art of Portugal.

The hotel has a bar and serves up international dishes as well as Portuguese snacks

The website says Ronaldo has taken inspiration from the colours and art of his home country
All rooms are equipped with Espresso makers, refrigerators, USB ports, HD-TV and Wi-Fi.

The restaurant offers international dishes and Portuguese snacks, while there are also multiple screens to watch sports on.

There is also a fitness centre and event rooms for business meetings to take place in.

The 36-year-old has been pumping up his hotel portfolio in recent times, first opening two hotels in Portugal and then one in Madrid.

He also planned to open up a luxury hotel in Manchester near Piccadilly Gardens in 2023.

It comes as no surprise with Ronaldo opening up hotels in Lisbon and Madrid, where he had spells in both cities for Sporting Lisbon and Real Madrid.

Ronaldo left Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for Manchester United and spent six years there before leaving to join Real Madrid for a then world record £80m transfer fee.

Samuel Bill Secondary School Sets To Reopen After 33 Years Closure

Plans have been concluded to reopen Samuel Bill Secondary School, Abak in Akwa Ibom State for academic exercise 33 years after it was shut down as a result of students’ unrest.

President of the Alumni Association, Churchill Udoh, who disclosed this, said the school would throw its gates open again during the next academic session beginning from September 2021.

The Qua Iboe Church-owned school was shut down in 1989 after students’ demonstration and since then its doors have remained under keys and lock

Speaking at the 12th annual alumni reunion at the weekend, Udoh recounted that the school operated for only ten years from 1979, before the sad incident, explaining that due to the quality of learning they received, many graduates of the school are today in various leadership positions in government, business, professional practice and church administration.

Speaking separately, the churches’ leaders assured the alumni of their unalloyed support to the school.

During the reunion ceremony, Reverend Samuel Udeme Ebukiba, the Conference Chairman of the United Evangelical Church was inducted as honorary member, Samuel Bill Old Boys Association (SOBA), and the awardee was decorated by Reverend Ekpedeme Effanga, Conference Chairman, Qua Iboe Church, who is also an honorary member of the association earlier inducted in 2017.

The honorary membership award is the highest honor given to a non-student and the award is given in recognition of the contributions and commitment to the mission of the Late Samuel Alexander Bill.

Liberian Among Top Experts To Conduct Governance Review At School Board In Canada

The president of the Liberian Association of Canada, Leo Nupolu Johnson, has been appointed as one of four consultants to conduct a comprehensive governance review of the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board’s policies and governance practices to elevate equity, diversity and inclusion in an effort to confront systemic barriers through anti-racism, anti-oppression and anti-colonial lenses.

The project team will update policy frameworks, revise the HWDSB Board of Trustees Bylaws and Handbook and provide training and related professional development opportunities for Trustees under the banner of a local consulting firm, Wentworth Strategy Group.

This review will be the first of its kind in the Education sector in Canada.

The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board is already engaged with the Ministry of Education in supporting other school boards through this innovative approach to governance reform resulting from recommendations from a code of conduct report released in February 2021, which validated allegations of discrimination and racism against a former student trustee.

Other consultants include Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh (United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Development), Catherine Raso (Expert on Board Governance) and Troy Hill (Expert on Indigenous Cultural Competency).

The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board is the public-school board in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and operates 97 schools in 103 neighborhoods across the city.

It has an annual budget of $726.7 million and enrolment of 50,000 students.

Three South Sudan States Beat War Odds to Rank Highly in Primary Examinations

The National Examination Council in South Sudan says three states most affected by conflict have posted the best performance in the national primary examinations.

The three states: Jonglei, Unity and Warrap, are known for skirmishes such as inter-communal violence and cattle raids.

The three states which have had to endure flash floods and famine beat the odds to produce the best candidates in the national examinations.

In the recent Performance Index report released by South Sudan’s National Examination Council over the weekend, Unity State, where 1,922 candidates sat for the exams, was ranked top with 77.92 percent in performance.

The conflict-ridden, flood-enduring, troubled Jonglei State came second with 75.17 percent, posted by 2,256 candidates. Warrap State, where 6,030 candidates registered, scored 72.29 percent, coming third.

Out of the top ten best students, seven were girls, with Noami Nyiel Deng, a student from St. Andrew Primary School from Jonglei, emerging as the top 2020 student.

JCC Hai Negil, Kings Academy and St. Andrew primary schools topped the country with 88.42, 87.83 and 87.31 respectively.

Shockingly, no public school made it to the top 20 best primary schools.

Some 62,362 candidates out of the registered 64,138 sat for the national examinations, with 35,853 boys and 26,509 girls having registered.

Baked Chicken Drumsticks

0

We don’t often get to eat or cook chicken drumsticks except we get to order from fast foods. We forget to cook them on their own sometimes, but with this simple baked recipe, we’re about to start! After a quick marinade, these drumsticks bake in the oven in no time and stay extremely tender and juicy. The high heat helps the skin get nice and crispy for a perfectly baked drumstick that only takes about 20 minutes to bake!

Flavoring options

Don’t be afraid to mix up the marinade on these drumsticks. Skip the soy sauce and add a little extra salt and taco seasoning or go for a sweet bbq profile with bbq sauce, honey, and a little olive oil to thin it out. Add a little heat with sriracha, chili garlic paste, or your favorite hot sauce.

Prep tips

The joy of a marinade is that you can prep the chicken whenever you have the chance and then when you are ready to cook the chicken. You can even make the marinade the night before and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. Bring the chicken out about 30 minutes before you are ready to bake it so it has a little time to come to room temperature. Cooked drumsticks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 to 5 days. Reheat in the oven to help re-crisp the skin.

For an even easier cleanup line your baking sheet with aluminum foil

INGREDIENTS

1/4 c. low-sodium soy sauce

1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

Juice of 1 lemon

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Pinch crushed red pepper flakes

8 chicken drumsticks (about 3 lbs.)

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, oil, garlic, and lemon juice. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Add drumsticks and toss to coat. Refrigerate and let marinate at least 30 minutes and up to overnight.

Preheat oven to 450°. Place chicken on a large baking sheet and bake until golden and internal temperature reaches 165°, 20 to 25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
