Mentholated Ointment, Camphor may trigger Jaundice in Babies says Paediatrician

0

A paediatrician with the University College Teaching Hospital Ibadan, Dr. Ifeoma Ude said, mentholated ointment and camphor could trigger jaundice in newborn babies.

According to her, jaundice happens when there is too much bilirubin, a chemical that red blood cells release during their normal breakdown process builds up in the blood.

Jaundice ordinarily appears 2 to 3 days after an infant is born,

In addition to the normal causes, storing a baby’s clothes in camphor causes the breakdown of red blood cells. Some mothers feel their child may be having catarrh and apply mentholated ointment. Such things trigger jaundice in newborn babies,” the paediatrician saidtion

Some of the commonest causes of jaundice in children are mothers with type O or Rh-negative blood, and babies born premature. She cautioned parents against using herbal mixtures or paw-paw water for the treatment of jaundice in newborns, urging them to promptly seek medical intervention whenever they notice the condition in their babies.

“The level of jaundice in a baby rises by the hour if you do not seek medical intervention. That is why I am stressing that prompt intervention is necessary,” she emphasized.

Untreated jaundice has serious consequences, noting that if left untreated, jaundice could lead to brain damage, inability to walk and convulsion in little children.

How to achieve a Balance Diet

A balanced diet gives your body the nutrients it needs to function correctly. To get the nutrition you need, most of your daily calories should come from: Fresh fruits, Fresh vegetables, Whole grains, Legumes, Nuts, Lean proteins.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans explain how much of each nutrient you should consume daily.

What you need to know about calories

The number of calories in a food refers to the amount of energy stored in that food. Your body uses calories from food for walking, thinking, breathing, and other important functions.

The average person needs about 2,000 calories every day to maintain their weight, but the amount will depend on their age, sex, and physical activity level.

Males tend to need more calories than females, and people who exercise need more calories than people who don’t.

Current guidelines list the following calorie intakes for males and females of different ages:

Person  Calorie requirements

Sedentary children: 2–8 years                    1,000–1,400

Active children: 2–8 years                            1,000–2,000

Females: 9–13 years                                       1,400–2,200

Males: 9–13 years                                            1,600–2,600

Active females: 14–30 years                        2,400

Sedentary females: 14–30 years                     1,800–2,000

Active males: 14–30 years                            2,800–3,200

Sedentary males: 14–30 years                    2,000–2,600

Active people: 30 years and over              2,000–3,000

Sedentary people: 30 years and over      1,600–2,400

The sources of your daily calories are also important. Foods that provide mainly calories and very little nutrition are known as “empty calories.”

Examples of foods that provide empty calories include:

Cakes, cookies, and donuts

Processed meats

Energy drinks and sodas

Fruit drinks with added sugar

Ice cream

Chips and fries

Pizza

Sodas

However, it’s not only the type of food but the ingredients that make it nutritious. A homemade pizza with a whole meal base and plenty of fresh veggies on top may be a healthy choice. In contrast, premade pizzas and other highly processed foods often contain empty calories.

To maintain good health, limit your consumption of empty calories and instead try to get your calories from foods that are rich in other nutrients.

Why a balanced diet is important

A balanced diet supplies the nutrients your body needs to work effectively. Without balanced nutrition, your body is more prone to disease, infection, fatigue, and low performance.

Children who don’t get enough healthy foods may face growth and developmental problems, poor academic performance, and frequent infections.

They can also develop unhealthy eating habits that may persist into adulthood.

Without exercise, they’ll also have a higher risk of obesity and various diseases that make up metabolic syndrome, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, 4 of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States are directly linked to diet.

These are:

Heart disease

Cancer

Stroke

Type 2 diabetes

What to eat for a balanced diet

A healthy, balanced diet will usually include the following nutrients:

Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants

Carbohydrates, including starches and fiber

Protein

Healthy fats

A balanced diet will include a variety of foods from the following groups:

Fruits

Vegetables

Grains

Dairy

Protein foods

Examples of protein foods include meat, eggs, fish, beans, nuts, and legumes.

People who follow a vegan diet will focus entirely on plant-based foods. They won’t eat meat, fish, or dairy, but their diet will include other items that provide similar nutrients.

Tofu and beans, for example, are plant-based sources of protein. Some people are intolerant of dairy but can still build a balanced diet by choosing a variety of nutrient-rich replacements.

Foods to avoid

Foods to avoid or limit on a healthy diet include:

Highly processed foods

Refined grains

Added sugar and salt

Red and processed meat

Alcohol

Trans fats

What’s healthy for one person may not be suitable for another.

Whole wheat flour can be a healthy ingredient for many people but isn’t suitable for those with a gluten intolerance, for example.

Fruits

Fruits are nutritious, they make a tasty snack or dessert, and they can satisfy a sweet tooth.

Local fruits that are in season are fresher and provide more nutrients than imported fruits.

Fruits are high in sugar, but this sugar is natural. Unlike candies and many sweet desserts, fruits also provide fiber and other nutrients. This means they’re less likely to cause a sugar spike and they’ll boost the body’s supply of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

If you have diabetes, your doctor or dietitian can advise you on which fruits to choose, how much to eat, and when.

Vegetables

Vegetables are a key source of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Eat a variety of vegetables with different colors for a full range of nutrients.

Dark, leafy greens are an excellent source of many nutrients. They include:

Spinach

Kale

Green beans

Broccoli

Collard greens

Swiss chard

Local, seasonal vegetables are often reasonable in price and easy to prepare. You can use them in the following ways:

As a side dish

Roasted in a tray with a splash of olive oil

As the base in soups, stews, and pasta dishes

As a salad

In purées

In juices and smoothies

Grains

Refined white flour is featured in many types of bread and baked goods, but it has limited nutritional value. This is because much of the goodness is in the hull of the grain, or outer shell, which manufacturers remove during processing.

Whole grain products include the entire grain, including the hull. They provide additional vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Many people also find that whole grains add flavor and texture to a dish. Try switching from white breads, pastas, and rice to whole grain options.

Proteins

Meats and beans are primary sources of protein, which is essential for wound healing and muscle maintenance and development, among other functions.

Animal protein

Healthy animal-based options include:

Red meats, such as beef and mutton

Poultry, such as chicken and turkey

Fish, including salmon, sardines, and other oily fish

Processed meats and red meats may increase the risk of cancer and other diseases, according to some research.

Some processed meats also contain a lot of added preservatives and salt. Fresh, unprocessed meat is the best option.

Plant-based protein

Nuts, beans, and soy products are good sources of protein, fiber, and other nutrients. Examples include: Lentils, Beans, Peas, Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts, Tofu, Tempeh, and other soy-based products are excellent sources of protein and are healthy alternatives to meat.

Dairy

Dairy products provide essential nutrients, including: Protein, Calcium, Vitamin D and they also contain fat. If you’re seeking to limit your fat intake, reduced fat options might be best. Your doctor can help you decide.

For those following a vegan diet, many dairy-free milks and other dairy alternatives are now available, made from: Flax seed, Almonds and Cashews, Soy, Oats, Coconut, Tiger nuts, just to mention a few.

These are often fortified with calcium and other nutrients, making them excellent alternatives to dairy from cows. It is worthy of note that is better to extract these milk by yourself and not to rely on processed ones bought in stores.

Fats and oils

Fat is essential for energy and cell health, but too much fat can increase calories above what the body needs and may lead to weight gain.

In the past, guidelines have recommended avoiding saturated fats, due to concerns that they would raise cholesterol levels.

More recent research suggests that partially replacing with unsaturated fats lowers cardiovascular disease risk and that some saturated fat should remain in the diet — about 10 percent or less of calories. Trans fats, however, should still be avoided.

Recommendations on fats can sometimes be hard to follow, but one scientist has proposed the following guideline:

Fats to love: vegetable oils and fish oils

Fats to limit: butter, cheese, and heavy cream

Fats to lose: Trans fats, used in many processed and premade foods, such as donuts

Most experts consider olive oil to be a healthy fat and especially extra virgin olive oil, which is the least processed type.

Deep fried foods are often high in calories but low in nutritional value, so you should eat them sparingly.

Putting it all together

A healthy diet will combine all the nutrients and foods groups mentioned above, but you need to balance them, too.

A handy way to remember how much of each food group to eat is the plate method. The United States Department of Agriculturee USDA’s “ChooseMyPlate” initiative recommends:

Filling half your plate with fruits and vegetables

Filling just over one quarter with grains

Filling just under one quarter with protein foods

Adding dairy on the side (or a nondairy replacement)

But individual needs will vary, so the USDA also provides an interactive tool, “MyPlate Plan” where you can enter your own details to find out your personal needs.

Blasphemy Charges: Pakistan Overturns Death Sentences For Christian Couple

0

Pakistan’s Lahore High Court has released a 26-page judgment acquitting a Catholic mother and her partially paralyzed husband who were on death row for seven years after a lower court convicted them of sending blasphemous text messages.

Weeks after overturning the session court’s death sentence for the couple, Shagufta Masih and her husband, Shafqat Emmanuel, who was the watchman of a school in Gojra area of Toba Tek Singh district in Pakistan’s Punjab Province, the high court released the judgment last week, expressing displeasure over the conduct of the trial, The News International reported.

The Catholic couple was arrested in July 2013 under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and the session court sentenced them to death by hanging in 2014.

“We are dismayed that the learned additional sessions judge has decided the case in a slipshod manner … The appellants are acquitted of the charge,” reads the judgment.

“This case highlights the abuse of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws,” said Tehmina Arora, director of Advocacy, Asia, for ADF International, which is supporting the couple.

The acquittal, Arora said, “is a great step forward for religious freedom in Pakistan.”

“We hope it will set a precedent by showing how evidence must be evaluated in blasphemy cases,” she added.

“Shagufta and Shafqat are incredibly relieved to have finally been acquitted of these unfounded blasphemy charges,” the couple’s lawyer, Saif Ul Malook, said.

“The many delays to the hearing of their appeal caused them a lot of suffering. These cases are very difficult to litigate, due to the concern for security. There is a very real threat to the life of the clients and the lawyers,” he added.

Masih was held in the same prison as Asia Bibi, another woman who was accused of blasphemy and held on death row for eight years until she was acquitted in 2018.

The couple’s appeal was admitted and heard after the European Parliament passed an April 29 resolution calling “on the Pakistani authorities to release Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta [Masih] immediately and unconditionally and to overturn their death sentence.”

The couple was accused by a local imam of committing blasphemy by sending him an offensive text message in 2013.

Maulvi Mohammed Hussain, a leader at a local mosque, claimed that Emmanuel used his wife’s cellphone to send an anti-Islamic text message. He later claimed other messages followed. Hussain said he was praying when he received the offensive text message from an unknown number.

The Muslim cleric reportedly showed the text message to two other imams before approaching his counsel for legal proceedings. He and his lawyer later claimed they both received subsequent blasphemous messages.

Masih’s brother, Joseph, previously told the BBC that his brother-in-law had been tortured and forced to make a false confession.

The text messages were also alleged to have been written in English. Aside from being illiterate, Shafqat and Shagufta are not familiar with the English language — written or spoken.

The couple’s lawyer, who also assisted in the appeal of Asia Bibi’s blasphemy case, said previously that the charges against Masih and Emmanuel were “deeply flawed” and “weaker” than those levied against Bibi.

Cleaning ear with cotton bud could damage eardrum, surgeon warns

A medical expert, Dr. Julius Idowu, warned against the unnecessary insertion of a cotton bud and other objects into the ear to avoid damage to the eardrum.

Idowu gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria during a medical outreach at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ikate, Lagos.

The Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon at the Federal Medical Centre Ebute-Meta said that the functions of the ears included earring and balancing.

He said that unhealthy objects, such as cotton buds and feathers, among others, could be associated with medical health problems like damage to the eardrum.

Idowu said that such items could damage the ear skin lining within the auditory meatus and a canal within the inner ear, leading to bacterial infection.

According to him, the use of cotton buds can cause damage due to the sweetening sensation which may lead to ear impairment.

“Any ENT surgeon will always discourage the use of cotton bud because ear wax is produced naturally by our ears and the ears are self-cleaning.

“If you want to insert anything at all, insert your elbow, meaning that nothing should be inserted into the ear.

“Using cotton bud has also proven to disrupt the normal mechanism to which ears can cleanse itself and further compress the wax, thus causing it to be impacted,” he said.

The physician further disclosed that the practice could cause the cotton wool on the bud to get trapped in the ear, thereby becoming a foreign body, leading to discomfort and pain.

Idowu added said listening to loud music could also cause ear damage and loss of balance.

He said that the World Health Organisation estimated that more than five per cent of the world’s population were suffering from disabling earring loss.

“Of these, about 3.3 per cent are children, while the majority are in the sub-Saharan country, including Nigeria,” he said.

The medical expert further stated that the major causes of ear impairment could be congenital and acquired, such as a newborn due to drugs or chromosomal used during pregnancy.

He added that direct blows or slaps to the ear, head injury, and chronic ear discharge could also affect the ear.

Idowu also said that listening to loud music could cause ear damage and affect balance.

He also advised against acoustic trauma, noise and noise-induced earring loss due to exposure to noise for a long period, age and tumour.

The surgeon warned against prolonged use of an earpiece, with high volume not exceeding the normal decibel.

“There is a standard duration and level of decibel that is harmful to the ear.

“The standard unit of sound, called decibel is 80 decibels, 40 hours per week (eight hours per day for five days); any decibel from 90 is dangerous to the ear,” he said.

He advised youths and `those involved in noisy jobs and careers’ to ensure regular ear examinations and also guard against avoidable trauma (slap), which could rupture the eardrum.

Idowu also advised that a yearly visit to the ENT clinic could ensure healthy ears, nose and mouth.

NAN reports that an ENT surgeon, also called an otolaryngologist, is a medical specialist concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the head and neck, including, ear, nose and throat.

Teachers Service Commission: Kenyan Teachers Protest Recruitment Policy

Protests over alleged favoritism have rocked the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) recruitment of 9,000 teachers in Kenya.

Unemployed teachers and those working in private schools seeking employment by TSC have protested what they claimed was a skewed scoring method that disadvantages them while favoring interns serving under the commission.

TSC has increased the marks awarded to the teacher interns from 10 to 30 percent, sparking the protests.

The commission has also reduced the marks awarded for length of stay after graduating, which used to give priority to older unemployed graduates.

For teachers who graduated in 2012, the maximum score used to be 50 percent but this has now been reduced to 25 percent.

The most affected are teachers working in private schools who despite possessing considerable experience, may lose out to newer graduates who are under the internship programme.

The recruitment is expected to be intense as there are more than 350,000 registered teachers who are jobless.

Julia Roberts Shares Rare Photo With Husband Daniel Moder For 19th Anniversary: ‘Just Getting Started’

Julia Roberts is giving fans a rare glimpse into her continuing romance with Daniel Moder, her husband of nearly 20 years.

The “Pretty Woman” performer, 53, shared a sweet selfie snap to Instagram on Sunday as the pair rang in their 19th wedding anniversary from the sandy confines of a beach.

“19 years. Just getting started!” Roberts wrote in the caption of the post in which she dons an orange bird-logo cap pulled low over her signature blonde locks, a floral-print blouse and oversized shades.

Moder, 52, met Roberts in 2001 on the set of Brad Pitt’s film, “The Mexican” while Moder was working as a cinematographer.

The couple later tied the knot at Roberts’ ranch in Taos, New Mexico on July 4, 2002, and have since welcomed three children.

In 2018, Roberts raved about the love she shares with Moder to Extra and called him an “awesome human being” while adding that the pair “have so much fun.”

Twitter Loses Immunity Over User-Generated Content In India

Twitter Inc no more enjoys liability protection against user-generated content in India as the U.S. microblogging giant has failed to comply with new IT rules, the Indian government said in a court filing.

The statement is the first time Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration has officially said Twitter has lost its immunity after repeatedly criticising the company for non-compliance.

The dispute and the public spat has raised concern that American firms will find it difficult to do business amid a more stringent regulatory environment.

India’s IT ministry told the High Court in New Delhi that Twitter’s non-compliance amounted to a breach of the provisions of the IT Act, causing the U.S. firm to lose its immunity, according to the filing dated July 5.

The filing came in a case filed by a Twitter user who wanted to complain about some allegedly defamatory tweets on the platform, and said the company was not complying with the new law that requires appointment of certain new executives.

Twitter declined to comment. The company has previously said it was making all efforts to comply.

India’s new IT rules which became effective end-May are aimed at regulating content on social media firms and making them more accountable to legal requests for swift removal of posts and sharing details on the originators of messages.

Technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has slammed Twitter for deliberately defying the law and said all social media firms must abide by the new rules.

In recent weeks, as acrimony grew between New Delhi and Twitter, Indian police have filed at least five cases against the company or its officials, including some related to child pornography and a controversial map of India on its career page.

Police in two Indian states have named Twitter India chief Manish Maheshwari in complaints. Separately, the state of Uttar Pradesh has challenged in the Supreme Court a bar on police action against Maheshwari, after a lower court protected him against arrest over an accusation that the platform was used to spread hate.

Air Taxi Startup Volocopter Gains Key Production Certification

German flying taxi startup Volocopter said on Tuesday it was acquiring long-time partner DG Flugzeugbau, in a step that secures its compliance with the European Union air safety regulator’s production standards.

The acquisition, the terms of which were not disclosed, means that Bruchsal-based Volocopter now has production organisation approval in compliance with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in addition to existing EASA design approval.

“Volocopter is now the first and only electric vertical take-off and landing company holding both the required design and production organisation approvals to advance its aircraft towards commercial launch,” it said in a statement.

Volocopter hopes to bring its two-seater flying taxi, which looks like an oversized drone, into regular service in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. It is also developing a similar cargo-lift drone.
