U.S. President Biden, Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau Discuss Border Restrictions

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday he has spoken with U.S. President Joe Biden about how to lift pandemic-related border restrictions between the two countries but made clear no breakthrough has been achieved.

U.S. and Canadian business leaders have voiced increasing concern about the ban on non-essential travel in light of COVID-19 that was first imposed in March 2020 and renewed on a monthly basis since then.

The border measures do not affect trade flows.

The border restrictions have choked off tourism between the two countries.

Canadian businesses, especially airlines and those that depend on tourism, have been lobbying the Liberal government to relax the restrictions.

Eriksen Unlikely To Play Football Again, Cardiologist Says

0

Christian Eriksen is lucky to be alive but unlikely to play again after suffering an apparent cardiac arrest at the Euro 2020 tournament, according to a sports cardiologist.

In dramatic scenes in Copenhagen, the 29-year-old midfielder dropped to the ground at the Parken Stadium soon before half-time in Denmark’s match against Finland.

He was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital.

The first-round match was suspended with players from both sides in clear distress before resuming some two hours later after Eriksen was said to be in a stable condition.

Finland won 1-0.

Professor Sanjay Sharma, professor of sports cardiology at London’s St George’s University, said football bodies and medical practitioners were likely to be “very strict” about allowing Eriksen to play again.

Sharma, who worked with Eriksen at Tottenham Spurs, said: “Clearly something went terribly wrong. But they managed to get him back. The question is what happened? And why did it happen?”

“This guy had normal tests all the way up to 2019. So, how do you explain this cardiac arrest?” asked Sharma.

Sharma, who chairs the FA’s expert cardiac consensus group, said there were multiple reasons a cardiac arrest could have happened, such as high temperatures or an unidentified condition.

But he said reports after the match that Eriksen who is now with Italian side Inter Milan was awake in hospital were “a very good sign.”

“I’m very pleased. The fact he’s stable and awake, his outlook is going to be very good.

“I don’t know whether he’ll ever play football again. Without putting it too bluntly, he died today, albeit for a few minutes, but he did die. And would the medical professional allow him to die again? The answer is no.”

He added: “The good news is he will live, the bad news is he was coming to the end of his career. So, would he play another professional football game? That I can’t say. In the UK, he wouldn’t play. We’d be very strict about it.”

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand struggled to hold back the tears during his post-match press conference.

He revealed his side had the choice of finishing the Group B opener on the night or returning on Sunday.

“It was more unmanageable to have to restart tomorrow (Sunday). It was more unmanageable than going back out now and getting it all put behind us,” he said.

“I could not be more proud of this team, who take good care of each other.

“There are players in there who are completely finished emotionally. Players who on another day could not play this match. They are supporting each other. It was a traumatic experience.”

After Eriksen collapsed, his team-mates formed a shield around the 29-year-old while he received treatment and fans from both sets of countries chanted the name of the midfielder.

The football world has united to send messages of support to Eriksen and his family.

Sabrina Kvist Jensen, with whom Eriksen has two children, was consoled on the sideline by other Denmark players and team officials while the midfielder received treatment.

England, who get their Euro 2020 campaign under way Sunday against Croatia, had been due to hold a press conference on Saturday evening with captain Harry Kane alongside manager Gareth Southgate.

But the Football Association confirmed the media briefing had been cancelled.

Kane, who spent eight seasons with Eriksen at Tottenham, writing on Twitter: “Chris. I’m sending all my love to you and your family. Stay strong, mate.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: “Encouraging news about Christian Eriksen, we are all thinking about him and his family.

Well done to the medical team and (English referee) Anthony Taylor for their calm and swift action. W.”

Later in the evening, the Dane’s Inter Milan team-mate Romelu Lukaku dedicated his first goal in Belgium’s 3-0 win over Russia to Eriksen by saying into the pitchside cameras: “Chris, I love you.”

He later told beIN SPORTS: “It was difficult to play because my mind was with my team-mate. I hope he is healthy and I dedicate this performance to him. I cried a lot because I was scared, obviously.”

Meanwhile, the BBC has apologised following complaints that it continued to broadcast while Eriksen received emergency treatment.

“We apologise to anyone who was upset by the images broadcast,” the broadcaster said in a statement.

“In-stadium coverage is controlled by UEFA as the host broadcaster, and as soon as the match was suspended, we took our coverage off air as quickly as possible.”

Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker, who anchored the BBC’s studio coverage of the match, said: “In 25 years of doing this job, that was the most difficult, distressing and emotional broadcast I’ve ever been involved with.”

Lineker thanked his colleagues Alex Scott, Cesc Fabregas and Micah Richards, who were with him for their “professionalism, warmth and empathy.”

Of the host broadcaster’s coverage, Lineker said: “They should have stayed on a wide of the stadium. Apologies.”

Former Tottenham player and manager Glenn Hoddle, who suffered a cardiac arrest while working at the BT Sport studios in 2018, tweeted: “Thank God Christian is ok. And to those who did the CPR, it’s simple, you saved his life as I know so well.”

The Queen Reminds Me Of My Mother – Biden

0

U.S. President Joe Biden said Britain’s Queen Elizabeth reminded him of his mother and that she had asked about China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin as they had tea at Windsor Castle on Sunday.

Biden lavished praise on the 95-year-old British monarch after their private meeting which came at the conclusion of the Group of Seven leaders’ summit at which he called for concerted action on China and ahead of a meeting with Putin on Wednesday.

“I don’t think she’d be insulted but she reminded me of my mother, the look of her and just the generosity,” Biden, 78, told reporters shortly before departing London.

“She’s extremely gracious, that’s not surprising, but we had a great talk. She wanted to know what the two leaders that I — the one I’m about to meet with, Mr Putin, and she wanted to know about Xi Jinping, and we had a long talk.”

The monarch, attired in a bright pink floral outfit, had warmly greeted Biden and his wife Jill in the Quadrangle of the castle, home to the royal family for nearly 1,000 years, where they were treated to a taste of British pomp.

The president inspected a Guard of Honour formed of The Queen’s Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards, which gave a Royal Salute, and the U.S. National Anthem was played before they entered the castle for tea.

“I said I wish we could stay longer, maybe we could hold the cars up a minute, and stuff. Anyway, she was very gracious,” said the president who confirmed he had invited the monarch to the White House.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth stands in front of members of the Royal Guard ahead of her meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, at Windsor Castle in Windsor, Britain, June 13, 2021.

The queen had already met the Bidens on their visit to Britain. She hosted a reception for leaders of the Group of Seven rich nations and their spouses on Friday night in the southwestern English county of Cornwall where the three-day summit was held.

Ahead of that, Jill Biden said they had been looking forward to meeting the queen and that it was an exciting part of the visit for them.

The Bidens became the fourth president and first lady the queen has received at Windsor, following the Trumps in 2018, the Obamas in 2016, President George W. Bush and his wife in 2008 and the Reagans in 1982.

During her 69 years on the British throne, the longest reign of any English monarch, there have been 14 U.S. presidents, of which Elizabeth has met all bar Lyndon Johnson.

Despite the loss in April of Prince Philip, her 99-year-old husband of more than 70 years, and her age, the queen has shown her determination to carry on with her official duties as head of state during the high-profile G7 gathering.

After hosting the leaders on Friday where she cracked a joke during the official photocall, she provoked more laughter at another official engagement for a local project immediately afterwards when she cut a cake with a long ceremonial sword.

On Saturday, she was back in Windsor for a military parade to mark her official birthday, the first one she has marked without Philip.

G7 Chides China On Rights, Demands COVID Origins Investigation

0

Group of Seven leaders on Sunday scolded China over human rights in its Xinjiang region, and demanded a full and thorough investigation of the origins of the coronavirus in China.

After discussing how to come up with a unified position on China, leaders issued a final communique that delved into what are for China some of the most sensitive issues, including also Taiwan.

The re-emergence of China as a leading global power is considered to be one of the most significant geopolitical events of recent times, alongside the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union that ended the Cold War.

The G7 also called for a transparent, expert-led Phase 2 COVID-19 Origins study including in China, to be convened by the World Health Organization (WHO). Reuters earlier reported the finalised version of the draft communique.

Biden said it was not yet certain whether or not “a bat interfacing with animals and the environment… caused this COVID-19, or whether it was an experiment gone awry in a laboratory”.

Before the G7 criticism emerged, China pointedly cautioned G7 leaders that the days when “small” groups of countries decided the fate of the world were long gone.

The G7 also underscored “the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues”.

Netanyahu Out As New Israeli Government Approved

2

Benjamin Netanyahu has lost his 12-year hold on power in Israel after its parliament voted in a new coalition government with right-wing nationalist Naftali Bennett being sworn in as prime minister.

Bennet who will be prime minister until September 2023 as part of a power-sharing deal, will lead an unprecedented coalition of parties which was approved with a razor-thin majority of 60-59.

He will then hand power over to Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid, for a further two years.

Netanyahu – Israel’s longest-serving leader who has dominated its political landscape for years – will remain head of the right-wing Likud party and become leader of the opposition.

US President Joe Biden has already sent his congratulations to Mr Bennett, saying he looks forward to working with him.

Netanyahu served five terms, first from 1996 to 1999, then continuously from 2009 to 2021.

He called an election in April 2019 but failed to win enough support to form a new coalition government. Two more inconclusive elections followed.

After the third, he formed a government of national unity with then-opposition leader Benny Gantz, but the deal collapsed and Israel went back to the polls in March.

Likud emerged as the largest party, but after Mr Netanyahu was again unable to form a government, the task passed to Mr Lapid, whose party came second.

Opposition to Netanyahu staying in power had grown, not just among the left and centre but also among right-wing parties that are ordinarily ideologically aligned to Likud, including Yamina.

A Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) team has visited the Red/Blue Rail Line Projects being constructed by the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), and financed under the Real Sector Support Facility (RSSF) – Differentiated Cash Reserve Requirement (DCRR) of Central Bank of Nigeria’s Intervention Loan Facility.

The Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, who received the team on behalf of the State Government, explained that the project initially had some challenges, which included obtaining Right Of Way as well as payment of compensation to property owners, amongst others.

Akinajo, however, assured that the project has now fully commenced and is projected for completion by the end of Y2022.

Her words: “The implementation of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Redline Project will be executed in three phases. In Phase 1, the construction and operation of the rail system from Oyingbo to Agbado, sharing the track of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) standard gauge from Ebute Metta to Agbado; Phase 2, involves the extension of the Red Line Rail system and operation of the railway system from Oyingbo to Agbado through an elevated rail infrastructure across the Lagoon; Phase 3, entails the construction of independent rail systems and operation from Oyingbo to Marina”.

“The Blue Rail project, which is expected to run from Badagry to Marina, will have several platforms for passengers to buy tickets, embark and disembark from the platform”, the Managing Director”.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Debt Management Office (DMO), Mr. Olujimi Ige, said that the Lagos State Government plans to finance Phase 1 of the LRMT Red Rail Line project by way of RSSF – DCRR – CBN Intervention Loan Facility, which will be syndicated by three Deposit Money Banks/Financial Institutions.

He added that a portion of the Red Rail Line project will, however, be financed from the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) towards the end of the contract, stressing that the CBN-DCRR Intervention is to assist States in rapid infrastructure development through loans given at a reduced rate.

The CBN team, led by Mr. Gamma Kwaji, an Assistant Director, expressed satisfaction with the level of work done so far, stressing that he was optimistic that the project will be completed within the timeline projected.

Recall that the Lagos State Government embarked on the LRMT Rail project to improve movement and connectivity for more efficient travel time across the State.

Adesanya Beats Vettori To Defend Middleweight Title At UFC 263

0

Israel Adesanya dominated Vettori at UFC 263 Saturday night, earning a unanimous decision to remain undefeated in the middleweight division.

The crafty UFC middleweight star left no doubt in the rematch, pummeling Vettori with a flurry of kicks to the head and legs to defend his title.

Adesanya (21-1) kept out of reach from Vettori’s powerful punches most of the night and used his feet effectively, keeping the Italian fighter off balance.

The Nigeria-born New Zealander won 50-45 on all three judges’ scorecards in the third full-capacity UFC event.

Speaking during a post-fight press conference Adesanya said “I’m slowly starting to accept it as a great performance, but right now, I just wanted to punch him in the face more, but credit to him and his boxing coach, I’ll say they improved their boxing a bit, so I think they thought that would be enough but it wasn’t enough, it wasn’t enough,”

Alongside Cameroon’s Francis Ngannou shining in the Heavyweights, Israel Adesanya is just one of the many successes African nationals have had in the Octagon, with fellow Nigerian Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman also punching well above his weight.

UFC President Dana White said,”Adesanya is unbelievable and he seems to be getting better,”

Since 2019, Israel Adesanya has been undefeated as a Middleweight, losing only once in 22 fights to Poland’s Jan Błachowicz.

Chad’s MPS Appoints Kabadi As New Secretary General

0

On Saturday, Haroun Kabadi was appointed Secretary General of the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS) at the end of a congress under high tension in capital city N’Djamena.

Speaking after his appointment, Kabadi said the congressmen have just placed their trust in him by appointing him Secretary General of the Patriotic Salvation Movement.

A well known figure of Chadian politics, Kabadi, now president of the National Assembly, had already been the party’s secretary general, some twelve years ago.

A key political player during Idriss Déby Itno’s stay in power, Haroun Kabadi refused to step in as the interim president, when the Chadian leader died in last April.

A move that allowed for the creation of the Military Transition Council, which has ruled the country these last two months.

Haroun Kabadi will have to deal with the internal tensions within the Patriotic Salvation Movement, as the rule of Mahamat Idriss Déby remains heavily contested
