Tsunami warnings remain in effect in New Zealand and Chile following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia’s Far East in the early hours of Wednesday.

Authorities in New Zealand have warned that tsunami activity rebounding from South America could result in strong and unusual sea currents persisting for up to 24 more hours.

In Chile, a country highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis, officials have declared a state of caution. Citizens have been advised to stay away from coastal areas, beaches, and to refrain from any maritime activities. Interior Minister Álvaro Elizalde confirmed that waves reached heights of up to 1.1 meters in several locations, with one area experiencing a surge as high as 2.5 meters.

Elsewhere in the region, tsunami alerts have been lifted in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

While the earthquake resulted in several injuries, no serious harm or significant structural damage has been reported. However, in Japan, a woman tragically lost her life when her vehicle plunged off a cliff during an evacuation to higher ground.

Adding to the geological activity, lava flows were observed from the erupting Klyuchevskoy volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula amid the ongoing tsunami warnings..

FG obtains €275m For NEWMAP, Unveils Flood Insurance Scheme

The Federal Government has obtained a €275 million funding deal to fast-track the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) and support broader environmental sustainability programs aimed at tackling climate change and restoring degraded land nationwide.

‎Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal disclosed the development during a Government–Citizens Engagement forum in Kaduna, hosted by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation under the theme “Evaluating Campaign Promises: Strengthening Citizen–Government Dialogue for National Cohesion.”
‎
‎Lawal explained that €175 million of the package is earmarked specifically for advancing NEWMAP initiatives, while the rest will be allocated to complementary green projects.
‎
‎He also revealed that the government has concluded arrangements to introduce a National Flood Insurance Policy and increase the National Sovereign Green Bond to ₦250 billion to support climate-resilient infrastructure and development.
‎
‎The Minister emphasized that his ministry is intensifying efforts to safeguard the environment and bolster food production, particularly across Nigeria’s northern states.
‎
‎“We are advancing efforts to deploy Forest Rangers across the 19 northern states and the FCT to secure our forests and eliminate criminal activities,” he stated.
‎
‎He underscored the government’s dedication to tackling desertification and expanding forest cover by planting more than 5.5 million trees under the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative.

‎In preparation for the 2025 planting season, the Forest Research Institute of Nigeria is producing 10 million drought-tolerant seedlings.

‎As part of broader reforestation plans, five million date palm and 3.85 million neem seedlings are being raised for distribution across the 11 frontline states affected by desert encroachment.

‎Lawal further revealed that there have been major upgrades to the country’s flood and erosion early warning infrastructure. “Our flood alert system now covers 258 communities with 90 percent accuracy, reducing loss of life and property,” he said.

‎He added that a total of 198 flood and erosion mitigation projects have been completed across the country, including the Jibia River Bank Protection covering 1,812 hectares, the desilting of 182,780 hectares along the Hadejia River, and the restoration of 29,622 hectares in the Nguru Wetlands.

‎The Minister announced that ₦12 billion has been allocated to 9,648 beneficiaries across 16 northern states through agricultural value chain programmes aimed at boosting rural livelihoods.

‎As part of efforts to embrace a circular economy, Lawal said the implementation of the Circular Economy Roadmap has created more than two million new jobs nationwide.

“I started seeing water coming in after an hour of the rain. I immediately took my children and wife to a safe area,” he said.

‎Although the Borno State Police Command reported no casualties, it confirmed that the floodwaters caused the collapse of eight structures—mostly older residential buildings and informal housing.

What occurred in 2024 Maduguri floods

‎The 2025 floods follow a catastrophic event in September 2024, when the collapse of the Alau Dam, located in Konduga Local Government Area, inundated Maiduguri and Jere, displacing over 400,000 people and affecting more than one million.

‎The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 70% of Maiduguri was submerged, with at least 150 deaths recorded, though local estimates suggested higher casualties.
‎
‎The flooding, described as the worst in 30 years, destroyed critical infrastructure, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the state secretariat, and major bridges like Gwange and Lagos Street.
‎
‎The 2024 disaster was triggered by heavy rainfall and structural damage to the Alau Dam, which had previously collapsed in 1994 and 2012. The flooding also led to a prison break, with 270 inmates, including suspected Boko Haram members, escaping from a medium-security facility.

‎Additionally, 80% of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo perished, and dangerous animals, including crocodiles, escaped, posing further risks to residents.

Government  Response to the incident

Rasmus Højlund gave manager Ruben Amorim a timely reminder of his quality by scoring in Manchester United’s commanding 4–1 victory over Bournemouth at Soldier Field, continuing their unbeaten preseason tour in the United States.

The Danish striker opened the scoring with a deft header just eight minutes into the match, capitalizing on an excellent cross from Patrick Dorgu. Nollywood-Focused Streaming Service, Kava, Set For August Launch

A new chapter is opening for African cinema as kava, a dedicated Nollywood streaming platform, prepares to launch globally in August 2025.

According to a statement released on Thursday, kava is backed by Nollywood powerhouses inkblot productions and filmhouse group and is positioned to take Nigerian storytelling to audiences far beyond its borders.

The platform will debut with more than 30 premium Nollywood titles, a mix of exclusive post-theatrical releases and timeless favourites, with plans to roll out new weekly content across genres from drama to thrillers.

According to kava’s management, the platform seeks to serve viewers and filmmakers, offering a fair and transparent model for creators.

On the kava launch, Chinaza Onuzo, CEO of kava, said the platform will serve as a stage for “cultural storytelling” that reflects Africans’ identities.

Mr Onuzo said, “Kava is where cutting-edge technology meets cultural storytelling. We’ve built a world-class digital platform tailored to showcase the richness of Nollywood.”

While commenting on the revived streaming platform, Kene Okwuosa, another executive chief of kava, stated that the platform will serve as a representative of Africa on the global stage.

“This is more than a platform – an ecosystem for African content, focusing on underserved global demand. Kava exists to serve audiences and also represents both a cultural leap and a commercial opportunity.”

He added, “We’re not just streaming films – we’re building the digital infrastructure for the future of African cinema. We want our audiences to feel the joy of seeing their language, humour, struggles, and triumphs on screen. To feel seen, and like they’re part of something bigger.”

The management noted that the streaming platform, kava, is backed by the extensive networks and expertise of filmhouse and inkblot, founded in 2012 and 2010 respectively, pioneers of cinema exhibition, content production, and global distribution.

The cinema and the studio strategically positioned kava to fill the demand for authentic African content, particularly among the diaspora.

Sadiq In Negotiations With Alavés As Almería Eyes Return Move

Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq is in discussions with Deportivo Alavés over a potential summer move, even as his former club Almería have also renewed their interest in bringing him back ahead of the new season.

According to Onda Vasca, the 27-year-old is currently in contact with Alaves as the Basque club look to bolster their attacking options following the departure of Joaquín Panichelli to Strasbourg for €16.5m.

With only Asier Villalibre and Toni Martínez available to coach Eduardo Coudet, the club’s technical director Sergio Fernandez has made signing a new striker a priority.

Sadiq is in conversations with the Vitoria-Gasteiz side, affirming Alavés’ intent to pursue the Nigerian, despite Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay recently suggesting the player could still remain at the San Sebastian-based club.

Sadiq, who joined Real Sociedad in 2022 from Almería for €20m, has struggled to settle following a long injury layoff after an anterior cruciate ligament tear in September of that year.

A six-month loan spell at Valencia earlier this year helped him regain form, as he scored six goals to help the club avoid relegation.

Abbas Urges Youths To Lead Nigeria’s Political Transformation

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has called on Nigerian youths to take an active role in shaping the nation’s political future.

Speaking in Abuja at the unveiling of the Take Action Campaign themed “Awakening a Generation, Youthful Leadership for a New Nigeria, Abbas represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Youth in Parliament emphasized that young Nigerians must begin to assert their numbers and influence in governance.

“Youths are not just the future they are the present. Their presence must be felt in leadership,” he said.

The Take Action Campaign, launched by the Youth in Parliament Forum, is a national initiative focused on empowering young Nigerians to take on leadership roles in politics and public service. Abbas expressed concern that despite making up over 60% of the population, youth participation in decision-making remains low.

Citing legislative reforms like the Not Too Young to Run Act, Abbas noted that efforts to open political space are already yielding results. He highlighted Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed of Kebbi State, elected at age 26, as a testament to what’s possible when the system becomes inclusive.

He also challenged the youth to look beyond emigration as a solution, urging them instead to stay, engage, and take charge of building the country. “Even with a blue passport, you remain a second-class citizen abroad. This is your land, your mission, your identity,” he said. “Don’t just criticize online get involved, ask questions, make your voice heard. We have no other country.”

Director General of the Youth in Parliament Forum, Tony Nwulu, described the campaign as a movement to awaken political consciousness among young people and inspire them to run for office and take control of their future.

“This marks the start of a journey towards a youth-led political renaissance driven by innovation, legislation, and leadership,” Nwulu stated.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, praised the campaign as a natural extension of the Not Too Young to Run movement. Represented by the state’s Director General of Research and Development, Moses Okezie-Okafor, Ododo emphasized the importance of action over rhetoric, citing Kogi’s model of gender and youth inclusion—where all local government deputy chairpersons and key state officials are women.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, also aligned with the campaign’s goals. Represented by Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Chika Abazu, he revealed that over 40% of the state cabinet consists of youths, including himself, a beneficiary of the Not Too Young to Run law.

“We’re building a new Nigeria, and this movement only becomes impactful when those who rise to leadership hold the door open for others to follow,” he concluded.

Actors Guild Suspends Actress Shirley Igwe Indefinitely

Nigeria’s Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has suspended actress Shirley Igwe indefinitely over the alleged assault of a crew member on a film set in Lagos.

AGN disclosed this in a letter signed by its National President, Emeka Rollas, representing filmmaking regulatory bodies, the Office of the Inspector General of Police, and the Lagos State Governor.

According to the letter, Shirley—who once served as Principal Protocol Officer to former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha—physically assaulted a crew member during a production, leading to an altercation in which she allegedly slapped the individual.

The actress is best known for her role as “Adaora” in the popular 2012 film Mercy The Bus Driver. Since her debut in the early 2010s, she has featured in titles such as The King’s Search (2017), Stormy Hearts (2017), Love And Shadows (2019), and Blackout (2025).

AGN stated that its decision followed a preliminary investigation that left the council with no choice but to impose the indefinite suspension.

“Following our preliminary investigations into the allegation of violence levelled against actress Shirley Igwe on a film set in Lagos, the National Executive Council (NEC) has resolved to place her on indefinite suspension,” the letter read.

The guild further explained that Igwe’s actions violated the body’s professional standards.
