Biden urges U.S. Congress to approve police reform by the anniversary of George Floyd’s death

0

U.S. President, Joe Biden, has urged Congress to approve a police reform bill by the end of May, which will mark one year since the death of George Floyd at the hands of a former Minneapolis police officer.

In his first address to a joint session of Congress, Biden emphasized the need for accountability for law enforcement officials who abuse authority when engaging with the public. He specifically pointed to the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

“We have to come together to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the people they serve, herd out systemic racism in our criminal justice system and enact police reform in George Floyd’s name,” Biden said. “Let’s get it done next month on the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death.”

The bill named after Floyd was introduced last year by Reps. Karen Bass, D-Calif., and Rep Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and then-Sen. Kamala Harris.

Floyd, a Black man, died last May after former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, knelt on his neck for nine minutes while arresting Floyd. Chauvin was found guilty on three counts of murder and manslaughter this month after a highly publicized court trial.

The bill proposes a host of reforms to community policing, including bans on discriminatory profiling based on race or religion, mandated use of dashboard cameras and bans on chokeholds, like the one used on Floyd. It passed on the House last month and is pending a Senate vote.

“We’ve all seen the knee of injustice on the neck of Black Americans. Now is our opportunity to make some real progress,” Biden said. “The vast majority of men and women wearing a uniform and a badge serve our communities and they serve them honorably. I know they want to help meet this moment, as well.”

The bill faces pushback from some Republicans with alternate suggestions on policing reforms. But Rep. Joyce Beatty, chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said there’s room for compromise on the measure in the Senate, noting efforts by Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina to work with lawmakers.

“I am of the belief that we will do some negotiations and that we’ll be able to move the needle,’’ she said.

Scott, the Senate’s only Black Republican, introduced a bill last summer that contained some of the reforms outlined in the George Floyd act, but it was blocked by House Democrats for not going far enough. Scott recently said language on compromised legislation could be finalized by early May.

“The country supports this reform and Congress should act,” Biden said during his speech. “We have a giant opportunity to bend the act of the moral universe toward justice — real justice.”

Insecurity: Fr Mbaka calls for Buhari’s impeachment

0

Nigerian Catholic Priest, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has called for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over the alarming spate of insecurity in the country.

Mbaka said Buhari has failed Nigeria woefully and that he should resign now.

Speaking at the Adoration Ministry in Enugu, he wondered how Buhari will maintain grave silence despite the incessant killings in the country.

Mbaka explained that Nigerians are crying because they don’t have a Sheperd and Buhari should resign or be impeached.

He also warned those who will attack him to desist, if not, they will face God’s wrath.

“Let me tell you; if it is in a civilized country, by now, President Buhari would have resigned with what is happening.”

“Nigerians are crying because there’s no security in the country, the House of Representatives should impeach the president if he doesn’t want to resign.”

Mbaka warned the lawmakers that should they fail to impeach the president and begin to attack him, something worse than what they can never imagine ”will happen to the members of the Senate and House of Representatives.”

He emphasized that the nation cannot continue like this and prayed to God to change its leaders.

Mbaka also frowned at the activities of herdsmen that destroy the farmland of people without any repercussion.

He warned church leaders and Nigerians not to come after him because he supported Buhari earlier.

”A good coach cannot watch his players to be defeated when he has players sitting down on the bench. It is either Buhari resigns by himself or he will be impeached.

”This statement is too mysterious and supernatural, I know many people will begin to fight it, saying did you not pray for Buhari? Did Samuel not anoint Saul? Am I the creator of Buhari? God created him, Nigerians supported him because he did well sometime. But now, how can people be dying and the chief security officer of the country will be sitting down without making any comment? Gunmen attacking people everywhere.”

“I pray that the church leadership will understand me as a messenger of God and not begin to attack me because the danger is going to affect the church.

“When gunmen begin to strike inside the church, they will begin to kill one man of God or the other or even members of the church. Who will go to church again? The priests will lose their job, the Bishops will lose their jobs. So you better keep quiet or support what I’m saying,” Mbaka added.

Novak Djokovic: Defending Champion To Miss Madrid Open

0

World number one Novak Djokovic will not defend his Madrid Open title after pulling out of next month’s event.

The Serb, 33, said he was sorry he would not be able to travel to Madrid for the Masters 1000 event which starts on Sunday, four weeks before the French Open

“It’s been two years already, quite a long time,” he added. “Hope to see you all next year.”

Last year’s Madrid event was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Djokovic was stunned last weekend by Russian world number 28 Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open and earlier this month lost to Britain’s Dan Evans in Monte Carlo.

The Serb won his 18th Grand Slam title in February with victory at the Australian Open.

He is expected to play in Rome and Belgrade next month as part of his preparations for the French Open, which starts on 30 May.

Lagos Withdraws N25m Donation To Amputee Trader Over False Claims

0

Her story induced sympathy and before long, cash began to roll in. At the last count, she was said to have raked in N25 million. The Lagos State government was also planning to gift her N25 million. Days later, however, Mary Daniel, the Oshodi amputee, has turned out a liar with huge gaps found in her story. The state government has withdrawn its donation to her.

Miss Daniel became a sensation weeks ago after pictures of her selling water in sachet at Oshodi surfaced on the social media. She claimed she lost a leg in an accident that killed all other passengers, including her parents when she was a teenager.  It has now been found that she did not lose her leg in an accident and neither is her father dead.

She also claimed to be fending for a baby and an aged grandmother. She said she had to drop out of school and hit the streets to make ends meet.

The Lagos State government, which sheltered her to prevent criminals from taking advantage of her sudden fortune, also threw her a birthday party. But, the ‘honeymoon’ ended yesterday when the state government discovered that her father was alive and she was amputated from birth.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, The Nation learnt, handed her over to officials of the social welfare unit for investigation. She was handed her over to officials of welfare in the presence of the police and some Kogi elders, who attested that her father was alive.

Miss Daniel, it was gathered, was receiving strange calls from those who staged her story with threats to reveal the truth unless she gave them their share of the money.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Hakeem Odumosu clarified that the young woman was in the custody of social welfare and not the police.

“The police were there but she was not handed over to us. She was handed over to the Social Welfare. There were irregularities and lies in the account of her life she gave. It was discovered that contrary to her claim that her parents died during an accident that left her amputated, her father is very much alive and that she was amputated from birth.

“It was also discovered that her presence in Oshodi was staged. Those working with her played on the intelligence of Nigerians to get donations for her. It came to light when the people started threatening her. She promised some N500,000, others different amounts and was planning to return to her home state when the information leaked.

“I had to attach some policemen to her to prevent any attack on her when she went to the bank. We suspected those people might follow her but everything went well as they were not seen.

“Presently, the state government is preventing her from accessing the money. The government does not want a situation where it will become a trend for people to cook up stories, manipulate the people to get donations,” Odumosu said.

Nigeria Can’t Afford Another Civil War, Osinbajo Warns

  • Ooni, Sultan caution against secession calls
  • Abaribe: govt creating room for disintegration

Nigeria cannot afford another civil war despite the increasing agitation and security challenges, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo warned on Wednesday.

He urged the political elite to rise up in defence of national unity and speak up against calls for disintegration.

The Vice President’s position was supported by two major traditional rulers – the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

The royal fathers cautioned against calls for secession by individuals and groups.

Also on Wednesday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed optimism that the security challenge would end soon.

However, Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe said the Federal Government was pushing the country towards disintegration as a result of its “nepotism and sectionalism”.

Osinbajo, who spoke during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Anambra State, said the silence of the elite on the spate of attacks in the Southeast and other parts of the country has grave implications.

At the session organised by Anambra APC patriots, led by Dozie Ikedife, the Vice President said Nigeria should avoid “a war without end.”

He warned: “Everyone who thinks they have some monies stored up somewhere, will eventually run out of money. Everyone who thinks they can go and hide somewhere, won`t even find a place to hide. In the end, everyone will suffer.

“Even if you don’t suffer, your parents, children, young and old people and your relations will suffer. We cannot afford a war in this country, we can`t afford it.”

The Vice President maintained that the failure of the elite to act now will expose the country to danger.

He said: “I pray that our country will never know conflict, but I know that every conflict is as a result of elite failure to speak up the truth and tell the truth to their communities.”

“If we don`t speak up against disunity, if we keep quiet and remain under the radar, the enemies of peace and those who want to promote disunity will have their way. And when this happens, we will find ourselves running helter shelter.”

Osinbajo spoke on the APC governorship primary slated for June 26, assuring aspirants of a level playing field.

He charged them to work in unity and support whoever emerged as the standard bearer for the November 6 election. He also urged the would-be candidate to avoid the winner-takes-all syndrome.

Ikedife said the interface was organised to bring the aspirants together to interact in an atmosphere of concord.

He appealed to the leadership of the party to ensure a free, fair and transparent shadow poll.

Chukwueze Battles Messi For La Liga Award

0

Samuel Chukwueze has been shortlisted for the Spanish top flight’s Player of the Month for April prize alongside the Real Madrid and Barcelona stars.

The Nigeria international will compete with Barcelona captain Lionel Messi, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, and Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa for the individual accolade. Other contestants are Sevilla’s Fernando, Real Betis’ Claudio Bravo and Fernando Pacheco of Deportivo Alaves.

Chukwueze was in terrific for the Yellow Submarine; scoring three goals in five Spanish elite division matches, while the 33-year-old Argentine superstar found the net on four occasions from the same number of outings.

Meanwhile, Chukwueze has been listed in the Top 20 Player Ranking of the UEFA Europa League and he has now revealed winning the competition is his immediate target with Villarreal CF.

“I would like you to tell me that I am going to win the UEFA Europa League, just tell me!” he implored Livescore Challenge.

“I want to win the UEFA Europa League, thank you!”

‘Samu’ is ranked 15th   in the official Player Ranking of the Europa League with 4780 points.

However, his La Liga club will have to first eliminate Arsenal, the club he came close to joining five years ago, to reach the Europa League final.

It is also the former team of Villarreal manager Unai Emery, who led Sevilla to three Europa League triumphs and has ensured his current club are unbeaten in 12 matches in this competition.

Villarreal welcome the London Gunners today  with the return leg in England on May 6. Arsenal, in the meantime,  have been handed a major triple injury boost ahead of their crucial semi-final first leg against Villarreal.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Spain, Mikel Arteta confirmed that all of his current injury absentees are now back in contention for the showdown with Villarreal.

That means Arsenal could welcome key trio Kieran Tierney, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette back into the squad while David Luiz is also expected to be available for the Europa League clash.

Turkish Grand Prix To Replace Canadian Grand Prix On 2021 F1 Calendar

0

The Canadian Grand Prix has been cancelled and will be replaced on its 11-13 June date by a race at Turkey’s Istanbul Park track.

It is the second successive year the Montreal event has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Travel restrictions made it impossible to enter Canada without a mandatory 14-day quarantine, said an F1 statement.

Meanwhile the contract for a race on Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been extended by two years to 2031.

Canada is experiencing a rise in cases, with Ontario – neighbouring province to Quebec – particularly badly affected.

Turkey returns for a second successive year as a stand-in race because of disruption caused by the pandemic.

Last year, it returned to the calendar for the first time since 2011, and was the event at which Lewis Hamilton clinched his record-equalling seventh world drivers’ title.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: “While it is disappointing we cannot be in Canada this season, we are excited to confirm that Turkey will host a grand prix in 2021 after an amazing race last season.

“I want to thank the promoter and authorities in Canada for all of their efforts in recent weeks but the travel situation made our plans impossible.”

How is it looking for other races?

Last season’s calendar was almost entirely based in Europe, apart from a brief trip to the Middle East at the end of the year.

This year, F1 has planned a record 23-race schedule with all the usual events, and the addition of a new event in Saudi Arabia, but the abandonment of Canada raises further questions about other long-haul races later in the season.

These fall into two broad categories – events in countries where the virus is under relative control but the government is using immigration restrictions as part of its model to keep it so; and nations that are struggling to contain the virus, or where it is running out of control.

Singapore, Japan and Australia all fall into the first category, with the added complication that the Japanese government has imposed emergency restrictions in the capital Tokyo and second city Osaka as a result of a spike in cases.

These restrictions are raising questions about the viability of holding this summer’s Olympics, which have already been delayed from 2020.

Singapore and Japan’s races are scheduled for consecutive weekends on 1 and 8 October.

The Australian Grand Prix has been postponed from its season-opening slot in March until 21 November, but the country would probably have to waive its strict immigration restrictions, at least for F1 personnel, if it was to hold a race.

Of the countries struggling to contain the virus, Brazil is the one whose race is most at risk, and its destiny may hang on whether the UK government keeps it on its red list of countries, meaning travellers have to quarantine in hotels for 14 days on their return to Britain. Eight of the 10 F1 teams are based in the UK so under those conditions the grand prix would probably be untenable.

Wimbledon To Become 14-Day Event From 2022

0

The Wimbledon Championships will become a 14-day tournament from 2022, with matches set to be played on Middle Sunday, traditionally a day off at the grasscourt Grand Slam, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said on Tuesday (April 27).

The first Sunday of Wimbledon is normally a rest day, on which tournament organisers work to get the courts back into top shape for the latter rounds, resulting in a packed “Manic Monday” schedule.

“From 2022, to coincide with the centenary of centre court, Middle Sunday will become a permanent part of the tournament schedule, turning the Championships into a 14-day event,” AELTC chairman Ian Hewitt said.

“Thanks to improved grass court technology and maintenance over the past five years… we are comfortable that we are able to look after the courts, most particularly centre court, without a full day of rest.”

Middle Sunday is also known as People’s Sunday because, on some occasions in the past, tickets have been made available on general sale on that day when rain delays have resulted in matches being postponed.

In another massive change, Wimbledon village bars and restaurants, which host the world’s best players once a year, will be out-of-pocket as organisers have, in a break with long-held tradition, banned players from renting private houses near the grounds.

“The minimised risk environment we created for the players is a requirement from the government to bring athletes without them going into quarantine upon entry into the UK,” AELTC chief executive Sally Bolton said.

“Players enjoy private housing and we hope to bring it back next year but it’s just not possible this year.”

The rule applies even to British players such as Andy Murray, who lives near the grounds, and instead will have to stay on site this year.

The government has allowed 25 per cent capacity at sports arenas and AELTC hope that will be increased closer to the Championships, before ticket sales and distribution are finalised.

Ticket prices will be the same as last year when the tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and organisers said they would wait until June before deciding on the prize pot.

Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam cancelled last year  and Hewitt said the tournament had collected an insurance payout of £180 million (S$331.8 million), of which £36 million went to the Lawn Tennis Association.

“We’ll Not Lower Guard, Despite Away Goal Advantage”, Says Tuchel Ahead Of Chelsea’s Home Leg With Real Madrid

0

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says his side will have to “fight for every centimetre” when they host Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final second leg next week.

The Blues secured a potentially important away goal as they drew 1-1 in Madrid  in the first leg.’

But Tuchel knows there is plenty more work to do if they are to reach a first final since winning in 2012.

“Even if we had won here, everything is possible,” he said.

“It’s half-time and we’ll have to fight for every centimetre and every advantage that we want to have and we need to fight and deserve it.”

Christian Pulisic had put Chelsea ahead on Tuesday before Karim Benzema equalised in a thrilling first half.

The second period failed to live up to the excitement of the first, and Tuchel felt his side should have made more of their superiority in the early stages of the game.

“I have a feeling we should have won the first half and that we deserved to win the first half,” he added.

“We could have perhaps decided this game in the first half an hour when we were playing so strong.”

Timo Werner failed to take a glorious chance to score before Pulisic’s opener as his shot from four yards out was saved.

Werner, who has 11 goals in all competitions for Chelsea this season, scored the winner against West Ham in the Premier League at the weekend but also missed a big chance in that game.

“He missed a big one at West Ham and he missed a big one here but it is nothing to cry about,” Tuchel said.

“This is the best thing about sport, nobody cares tomorrow. He is maybe angry.”

Real Madrid are 13-time winners of the Champions League but boss Zinedine Zidane accepts his side will have to work hard if they are to keep alive their chances of a 14th title.

The Spanish giants travel to Stamford Bridge for the second leg on Wednesday, 5 May (20:00 BST).

“We’re alive and we’re going to the second leg with the idea of winning,” said Zidane. “In general, we’re happy.

“We know they’re good in the opposition half, that they’re a competitive side and they don’t concede many. They’re in the semis for a reason.”

Mahrez Grabs Winner As Man City Come From Behind To Beat 10-Man Psg In Champions League

0

Riyad Mahrez curled in a free-kick as a much-improved second half performance saw Manchester City come from behind to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the first leg of their blockbuster Champions League semi-final on Wednesday (April 28).

Marquinhos had powered in a header to give PSG an early lead and the deserved advantage at half-time at the Parc des Princes

However, City skipper Kevin De Bruyne’s cross dropped in to pull City level just after the hour mark and Mahrez then beat Keylor Navas from a 71st-minute free-kick to complete the turnaround and give Pep Guardiola’s side the advantage going into next Tuesday’s return in Manchester.

After starting so well, PSG lost their way after half-time and had Idrissa Gana Gueye sent off in the 77th minute as a shocking tackle on Ilkay Gundogan earned the midfielder a straight red card.

Having already failed to win at home to Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern in this season’s Champions League, the Parisians now face an uphill struggle in England if they are to reach the final for the second year running.

It is, then, first blood to Emirati-backed City against Qatar-owned PSG in a tie that is also a battle of competing Gulf nations.

After all the money pumped in by their owners from Abu Dhai, City are eyeing a first ever Champions League final, and this was their first appearance in the semi-finals since 2016, when they defeated PSG in the last eight before losing to Real Madrid.

However, PSG can still be optimistic about their prospects after sensational away performances against Barcelona and Bayern in the last two rounds.

PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino is hoping to once again get the better of Guardiola, just as he did when his Tottenham Hotspur side beat City in the quarter-finals in 2019.

Game of two halves

The first leg started so well for the French club too, with Neymar in the mood and Angel Di Maria and Gueye especially impressive early on.

They went ahead in the 15th minute as Marquinhos broke away from the attentions of Gundogan to attack Di Maria’s right-wing delivery at the near post and head in.

The PSG captain was making his first appearance since coming off in the first leg of their quarter-final defeat of Bayern, a game in which he also scored.

Indeed for all the importance of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to the Parisians, the Brazilian defender has now scored in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League in back-to-back seasons.

It was not until the 42nd minute that the visitors really had a chance, Bernardo Silva teeing up Phil Foden for the shot that Navas saved.

PSG could have doubled their lead early in the second half, but the stretching Marco Verratti was just unable to connect with Mbappe’s low ball across the face of goal.

By then the pendulum was swinging towards City, as De Bruyne sent a powerful overhead kick just over the bar.

The equaliser arrived in the 64th minute. When a corner from the right was played short, the ball came all the way to De Bruyne, in line with the left edge of the box.

The Belgian looked up and bent in a cross which missed everyone including Navas as it nestled in the far corner.

The visitors had the momentum and won a free-kick 25 metres from goal with 20 minutes left when Gueye fouled Foden.

Mahrez, born and brought up in the Paris suburbs, curled a low strike from 25 metres through the wall and beyond the reach of Navas.

Things got worse for the home side soon after as Gueye was dismissed by German referee Felix Brych for a nasty challenge that caught Gundogan on the Achilles.

City saw out the game against the 10 men to take the advantage into the return.

A first Champions League final is in sight for Guardiola’s side, who could also wrap up the Premier League title this weekend.
