  • Jose Mourinho was sacked on Monday as Tottenham manager after 17 months
  • His side were struggling for form, though do have a EFL Cup final on Sunday
  • Now, reports are suggesting Mourinho held over four hours of talks with his team
  • The players were told some ‘home truths’ about their recent performances

Jose Mourinho stayed at Tottenham‘s training ground for four hours after he was sacked on Monday as he told some ‘home truths’ to the squad, according to reports.

The Portuguese was sacked after 17 months in charge, amid a difficult period where a poor run of results saw Spurs exit the Europa League, FA Cup and drop out of the battle for the top-four.

When Mourinho was collecting his belongings after being dismissed on Monday, he told some home truths to his players in discussions with the first-team that lasted over four hours.

The report details that Mourinho offered to leave immediately or pack up his office, after being sacked following two-hour talks with the board about his position.

The 58-year-old was changed and ready to take training before he learned of the decision that would cost him his job.

It is understood that his relationship with some players hit ‘rock bottom’ after their shock Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb last month, where they let a two-goal first-leg lead slip.

Mourinho had fallen out with some players during his time, most notably left back Danny Rose in a series of conversations which were aired as part of the club’s All or Nothing documentary on Amazon Prime.

He also froze out playmaker Dele Alli this season, who has barely played in the Premier League after being hauled off at half-time during their opening-day defeat against Everton.

However, with Ryan Mason now in charge on a caretaker basis until the end of the season, the players now have a clean slate.

They responded to the new man in charge well on Wednesday as they came from behind to beat Southampton in the Premier League.

Spurs have their chance to win a trophy for the first time in 13 years when they take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley.

5 Common workout mistakes you might be making

0

Without knowing it, a lot of people are making some of the biggest workout mistakes.

Everybody wants to be his own personal trainer. You feel like nobody knows your body better than you do, so who better to figure out how to make it bigger, stronger, and leaner? The problem is that you are your own worst enemy, and your own ego, imagination, and preconceived notions of what it takes to change your body can hold back your progress. But eventually, we all want to take the reins of our own training, so if you’re going to do so, or already have, at least know the pitfalls to avoid.

Doing Way Too Much

This is easily the most prevalent and destructive problem among beginners and experts. Sometimes you just can’t imagine doing fewer than five sets for an exercise, when in reality two or three is usually enough.

Through magazines, other media, and pop culture, we’re led to believe that if we want bigger arms, we need to do four different types of curls as a bodybuilder would do, using drop sets, taking each set to failure with a five-second negative, or some other advanced technique.

The truth is, thankfully, building muscle is not that complicated. Doing more work than necessary can lead to overtraining and injury, not to mention time-consuming workouts. As with medicine, you want to find the minimum effective dose that nets results. Train hard and you’ll see that you don’t need to train for too long.

Doing Too Much Of One Thing, Not Enough Of The Other

Whenever we set a goal, we tend to gear our training toward only that one thing, and forget about all the other little things that aren’t a priority. The only trouble is that those “little things” count.

Remember this line, which in the fitness world is akin to the golden rule: “Whatever you do on one side of a joint, you need to do an equal amount on the other side.” While a certain amount of imbalanced training is helpful for bringing up a lagging muscle group, most of the time, including when you’re a beginner, you’ll make faster progress when you keep things even.

If you’re going to do 20 sets for chest on chest day, do at least that many for back on back day.

Balance is especially important for chest training because of the action the shoulders take. Pressing motions draw the arms in front of the body, lengthening the muscles on the back of the shoulders and tightening the front delts and pecs. Without rowing movements to counteract this motion, over time, you’ll develop a tight chest and rounded shoulders, setting you up for shoulder injury in addition to bad posture.

Ignoring The Little Things

This is an extension of the last tip but warrants its own entry. While all you may want out of training is a big chest, ripped abs, or a stronger bench press, you have to pay attention to the small details that make them possible.

Every workout, no matter what kind, needs to begin with a warmup. Part of that warmup should include foam rolling and stretching to promote blood flow and loosen tight muscle groups.

You should also work stretches and exercises that specifically target muscle imbalances into your training from time to time. Get used to the idea that not every exercise you do will be glamorous, fun, or immediately evident as a step that brings you closer to your goal.

A good program strikes a balance between what you want to do—so you’ll stay motivated to train and enjoy the process—and what you need to do, so you can keep training pain-free years into the future.

Not Understanding Anatomy

Another misconception that bodybuilding culture has injected into mainstream thinking is that the body is just a collection of disparate parts. Many people think that if they squat on Monday they can still do a full back workout on Tuesday, complete with back extensions or, incredibly, even deadlifts. As if the lower back isn’t getting enough work from squatting.

This kind of thinking shows a lack of understanding of how these exercises work, and while your training doesn’t need to be ultra-scientific to be effective, it does have to respect some rules.

Rule #1: Never train shoulders the day after a chest session

Rule #2: Limit your direct lower-back training to days you squat and/or deadlift.

Rule #3: Don’t superset exercises that demand a lot of your grip, such as rows and chinups.

Rule #4: Unless you’re dead-set on body-part training, consider breaking up your workouts according to movement patterns.

Second Guessing Yourself And Getting Bored

Hopefully, this article hasn’t thrown you into a panic, making you second-guess everything you do in the gym. Because more important than doing things correctly is that you actually do something consistently.

Thanks to the Internet, there’s more fitness information available today—right now—than there ever has been in history. With that much to look at, it’s no wonder you’re confused about what to do. The solution is to pick one thing and block the rest out of your mind, at least for a few months. You’ll never make progress if you doubt what you’re doing or continually hop aboard the latest trend.

Former MMA Star Ronda Rousey Expecting First Child

Ronda Rousey, who followed Olympic judo bronze with a stellar mixed martial arts career, is expecting her first child with husband Travis Browne.

Rousey revealed in a video on Wednesday that she’s four months pregnant.

The video, which is very sweet, features several clips of Rousey and Browne from the past four months. They’re shown just moments after they learned the pregnancy test was positive, and we get to see Baby Rousey-Browne in ultrasounds and sonograms.

In the video, 34-year-old Rousey said that there’s more to their pregnancy story than what was shown, but she and Browne are planning to share it at a later date.

It was part of a video that clips of the 34-year-old attending doctor appointments with Browne.

Rousey won judo bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before becoming the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight champion.

She won 13 straight bouts and helped establish UFC as a global brand before fellow American Holly Holm knocked her out in 2015.

Rousey has also tried her hand at WWE wrestling and appeared in action movies, including “Expendables 3” and “Furious 7”.

Rousey, a UFC Hall of Famer, has spent the last several years focusing on a wrestling career with the WWE. She won her first championship in 2018 and held it for a then-record 231 days.

Her championship reign ended at WrestleMania 35, where she faced Becky Lynch and lost her first-ever match.

After WrestleMania 35, Rousey took a planned hiatus. She and Browne, also a former UFC fighter, had married in 2017 and wanted to start a family, which she made clear on social media back in 2019.

Rousey and Browne didn’t reveal the gender of the baby just yet but said they’ll be doing a gender reveal soon.

4,000 To Attend Brit Awards As UK Eases Restrictions

Around 4,000 guests will be allowed to attend next month’s Brit Awards ceremony as part of the government’s pilot scheme easing coronavirus restrictions for live events, organisers said Thursday.

Audience members at London’s O2 Arena will not need to socially distance or wear face coverings once seated, but will need to produce a negative test result.

The annual ceremony, which normally takes place in February, was postponed by three months because of safety and logistical concerns.

For the first time, best album at UK pop’s biggest annual event has four women nominated on a five-act shortlist.

Excitement Heightens In Icelandic Fishing Town Vying For Oscars

The tiny Icelandic town of Husavik, which was propelled to global fame by a hit Netflix comedy, has rolled out a red carpet on its main street in anticipation of even greater glory on Oscars night.

The power ballad “Husavik (My Hometown)”, which featured as the climactic moment in the movie about a couple bumbling their way through the Eurovision Song Contest, is nominated for Best Original Song, and residents are fired up.

The Oscar nomination came after a locally produced video extolling the song, presented by fictional Husavik resident Oskar Oskarsson, went viral, adding to the small fishing town’s emotional investment in the song’s success.

Local schools and shops will remain closed on Monday, the morning after the Oscars, to give residents a chance to watch the awards show live. The ceremony will be broadcast from Hollywood on Sunday, which will be late at night in Iceland.

Husavik Mayor Kristjan Thor Magnusson said local schoolchildren were very proud and excited, and could be heard singing the song daily in the town.

“The grassroots campaign for an Oscar for Husavik has really blown up,” he told Reuters. “We are certainly hoping that this attention will strengthen our tourism here.”

Husavik, which counts only 2,300 residents, usually relies on tourists attracted to its geothermal spas and whale-watching spots, but with international travel hammered by the COVID-19 pandemic it has seen few foreign visitors these past 12 months.

The town is preparing to open a Eurovision-themed museum in late May showcasing costumes, movie props and other memorabilia, which it hopes will attract fans of the contest.

Russian Authorities Arrests Over 1,400 At Rallies For Hunger-striking Navalny

Police rounded up more than 1,400 protesters on Wednesday as Russians in dozens of cities took part in rallies organised by allies of hunger-striking Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny over his failing health in jail.

His spokeswoman was jailed for 10 days, and another close ally detained, on the same day that President Vladimir Putin delivered a state-of-the-nation speech warning the West not to cross Russia’s “red lines” and pointedly made no mention of Navalny. read more

“This is one of the last gasps of a free Russia, as many are saying. We came out for Alexei … against a war in Ukraine and the wild propaganda,” said Marina, a student at the Moscow protest.

OVD-Info, a group that monitors protests and detentions, said 1,496 people had been arrested, including 662 in St. Petersburg and 95 in the Urals city of Ufa.

Protesters in central Moscow chanted, “Freedom to Navalny!” and “Let the doctors in!”. Navalny’s wife Yulia joined the rally in the capital, where demonstrators chanted her name.

The opposition had hoped the rallies would be the biggest in modern Russian history, and presented them as an attempt to save Navalny’s life by persuading the authorities to allow his own doctors to treat him.

But turnout looked smaller than during protests earlier this year before Navalny was jailed for 2-1/2 years for parole violations related to what he said were politically motivated charges of embezzlement.

Police said 6,000 people protested illegally in Moscow, while Navalny’s YouTube channel said turnout in the capital was up to 10 times higher.

The 44-year-old, who last year survived a nerve agent attack that Russian authorities denied carrying out, is thin and weak after starving himself for three weeks, and his allies say he risks kidney failure or cardiac arrest. The United States has warned Russia it will face “consequences” if he dies.

Taking A Knee, Raising A Fist To Be Punished At Tokyo Games – IOC

0

Taking a knee during the Tokyo Olympics or lifting a fist in support of racial equality will be punished as the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday maintained its ban on athletes’ protests inside stadiums, at ceremonies and on podiums.

The IOC’s Rule 50 forbids any kind of “demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda” in venues and any other Olympic area and the Games body concluded the rule should be maintained following an athlete consultation.

Against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter movement protesting racial injustice, calls have increased in recent months for a change to that rule that would allow athletes to protest.

Some international federation chiefs, including World Athletics’ President Sebastian Coe, have said that athletes should have the right to make gestures of political protest during the Games.

The IOC’s Athletes’ Commission chief Kirsty Coventry, who led a review of the rule, said the majority of athletes consulted were against any protests within the fields of play or the podiums.

“I would not want something to distract from my competition and take away from that. That is how I still feel today,” Coventry, a former Olympic swimming champion for Zimbabwe, said in a online presentation of the Rule 50 consultation results.

Coventry said there were a series of recommendations approved by the IOC’s Executive Board on Wednesday, including providing clarity on sanctions, more information about Rule 50, a change of wording of the Olympic Oath with messages on inclusion, and producing athlete apparel with inclusive messaging.

When asked, however, if athletes would be punished in Tokyo for making political statements such as taking a knee on the podium in support of racial equality, Coventry said: “Yes that is correct.”

“That is also because of the majority of athletes we spoke to. That is what they are requesting for,” Coventry said.

The IOC’s recommendations are the result of a consultation process that started in June 2020 and involved over 3,500 athletes.

Coventry said some 70% of those athletes did not want protests on podiums, ceremonies and fields of play.

Ohio Officials Probe Police Shooting Of Black Teenage Girl

Ohio State University students hold a sit-in at the Ohio Union to demand that OSU sever ties with Columbus Police Department in the wake of the killing of 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant in Columbus, Ohio, U.S., April 21, 2021.

State investigators in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday were probing the fatal police shooting of a Black teenager in a confrontation caught on body-camera video that appeared to show her holding a knife and lunging at two people.

The girl, identified by police as 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant, was shot on Tuesday around the same time a Minneapolis jury convicted a white former police officer of murdering George Floyd last year by kneeling on his neck.

Her shooting triggered immediate protests in Columbus, Ohio’s biggest city and the state capital, just as the announcement of the guilty verdict in the Floyd case brought relief and jubilation to the Minnesota city.

Interim Police Chief Michael Woods identified the officer who shot Bryant as Nicholas Reardon, who was hired in December 2019. It appears from the video is white and that he fired four shots at Bryant. Woods said Reardon “would be taken off the street” pending an investigation.

A spokeswoman for Franklin County Children Services said Bryant was a foster child in the agency’s care.

Bryant’s aunt, Hazel Bryant, told the Columbus Dispatch newspaper that the teenager had become involved in an altercation with someone at her foster residence.

“She was a good kid, she was loving,” the aunt told reporters on Tuesday, according to a video posted to Twitter. “She didn’t deserve to die like a dog on the street.”

Hazel Bryant could not immediately be reached on Wednesday.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the “tragic” shooting.

“She was a child. We’re thinking of her friends and family and the communities that are hurting and grieving her loss,” Psaki said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has opened an inquiry into the incident, which began when officers responded at 4:44 p.m. ET (2044 GMT) to a 911 emergency call from someone who reported an attempted stabbing at a home on the city’s southeast side, Woods said.

In a rare move by a law enforcement agency, Columbus police quickly released Reardon’s body-camera video of the incident, which shows Bryant apparently trying to stab two women.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther told reporters on Wednesday that the city did so in the interest of transparency and would release more videos of the event in the days and weeks ahead.

“It’s very important to be as transparent and responsive as possible,” Ginther said. “The public deserves to know what happens.”

Lakers Forward Davis Expects To Return Against Mavericks

0

Los Angeles Lakers star forward Anthony Davis expects to make his NBA return on Thursday after a nine-week injury absence.

Davis told reporters in a virtual press conference that he felt “100%” after recovering from a right calf strain and tendinosis.

As long as he continued to feel fine after practice on Wednesday, Davis said, he was ready to return.

Davis, an eight-time All-Star who teamed with LeBron James to lead the Lakers to the NBA title last season, was averaging 22.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 23 games this season before he was sidelined in February.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel, who had announced last week that Davis had been cleared for “full on-court activity,” said Davis would return as a starter playing limited minutes.

Davis said it was a frightening moment when he was hurt.

“I never tore an Achilles, but I kind of felt like sharp pain, like it was ripping, which I had never felt before,” he said. “So I knew it was something serious. It wasn’t as serious as it could have been, but it was still a pretty significant injury.”

The Lakers are 14-16 since Davis was sidelined, dropping from second to fifth in the Western Conference.

For part of that time, James has also been sidelined with a right ankle sprain.

Davis estimated Wednesday that James was probably “a couple of weeks” away from returning.
