Russia Launches Into Space New Batch Of UK Telecom Satellites

0

A Soyuz rocket blasted off from the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East on Monday carrying 36 UK telecommunications and internet satellites, the Roscosmos space agency said.

OneWeb, a London-headquartered company, is working to complete the construction of a constellation of low earth orbit satellites providing enhanced broadband and other services to countries around the world.

The company is competing against billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in the race to provide fast internet via satellites for the world’s remote areas.

Images released by Russia’s space agency Roscosmos showed the Soyuz rocket taking off against hazy skies Monday morning at 7:14 am local time (2214 GMT).

“All satellites have been successfully placed in target orbits and have been taken under customer control,” Roscosmos said in a statement.

“Mission success!” OneWeb wrote on Twitter.

The UK company plans for its global commercial internet service to be operational by next year, supported by some 650 satellites.

Monday’s launch was the third batch of its satellites placed into orbit from Russia, with earlier launches from the Vostochny cosmodrome of 36 satellites each taking place last month and in December.

OneWeb’s first six satellites were also launched by a Russian-made Soyuz rocket, taking off from the space centre in Kourou in French Guiana in February 2019.

The company launched 68 more from the Baikanour launch site in Kazakhstan last year.

The Vostochny launch site is one of Russia’s most important space projects, designed to reduce reliance on the Baikonur space centre Moscow currently rents from Kazakhstan

The project has been consistently behind schedule, with its construction marred for years by multiple controversies including corruption.

Ethiopia To Enter Revamped Telecoms Sector, Gets Two Bids

0

Ethiopia announced Monday it had received two bids for licenses that would end the government’s monopoly over its stunted telecoms sector, one of the last closed markets in the world.

The shake-up of the potentially lucrative sector — currently dominated by state-owned Ethio Telecom — is a cornerstone of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic reform agenda.

The bids came from South Africa’s MTN and a consortium including Kenya’s Safaricom, Vodafone and Vodacom, according to a statement from the Ethiopian Communications Authority, the government regulator.

Several other firms that had earlier expressed interest — including France’s Orange and the UAE’s Etisalat — did not submit bids.

But Brook Taye, senior adviser at the finance ministry, told AFP he was “very content” with how the process had played out so far.

“Our aim was always quality over quantity, so we would have loved to have so many other companies to participate but at the end of the day all of them have their own reasons,” he said.

Some companies might have been put off by a central bank directive preventing foreign-owned firms from providing mobile financial services, while others might have chafed at restrictions on developing independent infrastructure, Brook said.

Ethiopia also has a reputation for extended internet shutdowns during periods of social unrest and more innocuous events like national exams.

While Abiy’s government has said it will award two telecoms licenses, Brook said there was no guarantee the bids received Monday would be successful.

Officials will now begin reviewing the technical and financial specifics of the bids, and Brook predicted a final decision would be announced within two weeks.

The licenses are expected to bring an infusion of cash, jobs and infrastructure investment.

Ethiopia’s telecoms reforms also include a plan to sell a stake in Ethio Telecom, a move they hope will make the firm more efficient.

“Hopefully in about a year, no more dropped calls in the middle of an important conversation, or messages from your telecom operator saying… the person you called is not in the coverage area and whatnot,” Brook said.

JAMB Registers Over 300,000 For UTME; 8,000 For Direct Entry

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has, so far, registered more than 300,000 candidates for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the board’s weekly bulletin obtained from the board’s website, JAMB has also registered more than 8, 000 Direct Entry (DE) candidates.

“Total profile code generated so far is 497,528.
“Total UTME pin vended is 344, 115, while total pin vended for DE is 10, 848. Total registered candidates for UTME, 316, 132 and total registered candidates for DE is 8, 490.

“Total candidates who have indicated interest in sitting for the mock UTME are 126, 402,’’ it said.

According to the bulletin, candidates can send their National Identity Number  (NIN) from any SIM of their choice provided the SIM has not been used by another candidate to register for UTME/DE in the past.

JAMB said that this was contrary to its earlier statement that only the SIM that was linked to a candidate’s NIN could be used to send their NIN to 55019.

The board had on Sunday said that candidates could only generate their profiles by sending their details to 55019 on the SIM linked to their NIN.

It, however, advised them to follow the right process to be successfully registered.

“The right process is to send the word `NIN’, allow one space in between, and then insert the eleven digits NIN number and send to 55019.

“Any other process is wrong and would not generate the profile code for the candidate.’’

The mock UTME earlier scheduled to hold on April 30, is now to take place on May 20, while the examination will take place from June 5 to June 19.

Registration for UTME/DE which began on April 8, will end on May 15.

Russia Orders Navalny Group To Suspend Activities

0

Russian prosecutors have suspended activities of Alexei Navalny’s regional offices, a move which his Team says would essentially shut down the jailed opposition figure’s movement.

FBK’s director Ivan Zhdanov wrote on Twitter, attaching screenshots of a prosecutor’s decision said that activities of Navalny’s offices and FBK were immediately suspended, and

Moscow City Court also confirmed that activities of the group’s regional network were suspended, but clarified that prosecutors had the power to make the decision.

The court also said a final decision designating the group as extremist was due.

The latest development comes after Navalny, President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken critic, ended a hunger strike last week he started to demand proper medical treatment in prison.

A court in Moscow on Monday began proceedings into designating Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and its regional offices as extremist.

Meanwhile, Navalny’s office in Moscow said in a statement the group will not be able to work as usual saying would be too dangerous for employees and for our supporters.

The team however promised to continue fighting corruption, the ruling United Russia party and President Vladimir Putin “in a personal capacity”.

Meanwhile, Germany condemned the order, stating that using the instruments of fighting terror against politically undesirable opinions does not reflect the principles of the rule of law.

Chad’s Transitional Govt Says Won’t Negotiate With Rebels

0

Chad’s new military transitional government said it will not be negotiating with the rebels blamed for killing the country’s president Idriss Deby.

Speaking in a televised statement, military spokesman, Gen. Azem Bermandoa Agouma, said the rebels were seeking to collaborate with several groups of jihadists and traffickers who served as mercenaries in Libya.’

He added that this was not the time for mediation or negotiation with outlaws which would further endanger Chad and the stability of the entire sub-region.

The rebel group known by their French acronym FACT said on Sunday it was joining other armed groups, who oppose Deby’s son Mahamat Idriss Deby taking control of the country for 18 months ahead of new elections.

Security forces had launched after them and with the support of the air force located the enemy scattered in small groups regrouping in Niger territory,` far from the Chadian capital.

In the meantime, Opposition groups have called his son’s appointment a coup-d’etat and have called for a demonstration on Tuesday.

The former colonial power, France, has been careful not to criticize the military’s actions, and French President Emmanuel Macron attended Deby’s funeral last week.

Chad is home to a French military base where counterterrorism operations for the region are headquartered. Chad also has supplied critical troops to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in northern Mali.

Calm Returns To Somalia After Heavy Fighting

0

Calm returned on to the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Monday morning after heavy fighting between pro-opposition armed loyalist and the government security forces.

According to privately-owned Radio Risala, the situation in hot spot areas was calm and people were seen walking to their work places while others came out to assess the situation.

Earlier on Sunday, Heavy Gunfire erupted in Somalia’s capital between soldiers loyal to the government and others angry at the country’s leader President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and his extended stay in power.

There were no reports of casualties, but the gunfire heard across much of the city highlighted earlier warnings that the election standoff could increase instability in the Horn of Africa nation.

Somalia’s president is facing growing opposition in the country and abroad after the lower house of parliament approved a two-year extension of his mandate and that of the federal government.

The African Union was the latest to condemn the actions.

Somalia’s election, meant for early February, has been delayed amid disputes between the federal government and the states of Puntland and Jubbaland along with the opposition.

The soldiers were believed to have entered the city from military bases outside Mogadishu with most of them belonging to the clan of former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

Both have vowed to forcefully dislodge the president if he does not return to negotiations over the election delay or resign.

The San Fermin festival in Spain is one festival that draws thrill-seekers from all over the world. They come in their numbers to run through the streets with fighting bulls but for the second year in a row, the festival has been cancelled.

It was announced by the mayor of Pamplona, Mayor Enrique Maya. In his words, “To my very despair, I’m forced to officially suspend the festival of San Fermin in 2021”.

In February, regional president Maria Chivite had said the festival would not hold this year, but at the time Maya had refused to call it off yet and insisted he had the final say.

The mayor said the city council will use the cash due to be spent on the July festival to pay for activities during all the summer.

The San Fermin festival gained international fame from Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises”.The last time it did not celebrate the festival two years in a row was during the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War.

5 Possible reasons why you’re always tired

0

Do you always feel tired? You’re not alone. Between work, family and friends, and all the other commitments you’re juggling, it’s easy to blame constant fatigue on a busy lifestyle and lack of adequate sleep.

But if you’ve made some simple lifestyle changes—like going to bed earlier and managing stress and you’re still feeling the symptoms of fatigue, you might need professional help.

The reason? Excess exhaustion could be a sign of a more serious medical condition. Here are five sneaky health conditions that could explain your sluggishness.

Medical reasons you’re tired all the time

Anemia

The fatigue caused by anaemia is the result of a lack of red blood cells, which bring oxygen from your lungs to your tissues and cells. You may feel weak and short of breath. Anaemia may be caused by an iron or vitamin deficiency, blood loss, internal bleeding, or a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or kidney failure.

Women of childbearing age are especially susceptible to iron deficiency anemia because of blood loss during menstruation and the body’s need for extra iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The symptoms: Feeling tired all the time is a major one. Others include extreme weakness, difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration, rapid heartbeat, chest pains, and headache. Simple exercise, such as climbing the stairs or walking short distances, can wipe you out.

The tests: A thorough evaluation for anemia includes a physical exam and blood tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), to check the levels of your red blood cells and the hemoglobin in your blood. It’s also standard to check the stool for blood loss.

The treatments: Anemia isn’t a disease; it’s a symptom that something else is going on in your body that needs to be resolved. So, treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause of anemia. It may be as simple as eating more iron-rich foods, but talk to your doctor about the right treatment for you.

Type 2 diabetes

Sugar, also called glucose, is the fuel that keeps your body going. And that means trouble for people with type 2 diabetes who can’t use glucose properly, causing it to build up in the blood. Without enough energy to keep the body running smoothly, people with diabetes often notice fatigue as one of the first warning signs.

The symptoms: Aside from feeling tired all the time, other signs of diabetes include excessive thirst, frequent urination, hunger, weight loss, irritability, yeast infections, and blurred vision.

The tests: There are two major tests for diabetes. The A1C test, which is most common, shows your average blood sugar level over the course of a few months. The fasting plasma glucose test measures your blood glucose level after fasting for 8 hours.

The treatments: Your doctor will advise you on how to control your symptoms through diet changes, oral medications, and/or insulin.

Depression

More than “the blues,” depression is a major illness that affects the way we sleep, eat, and feel about ourselves and others. Without treatment, the symptoms of depression may last for weeks, months, or even years.

The symptoms: We don’t all experience depression in the same way. But commonly, depression can cause decreased energy, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, problems with memory and concentration, and feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and negativity.

The tests: There’s no blood test for depression, but your doctor may be able to identify it by asking you a series of questions. If you experience five or more of these symptoms below for more than two weeks, or if they interfere with your life, see your doctor or mental health professional: fatigue or loss of energy; sleeping too little or too much; a persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; reduced appetite and weight loss; increased appetite and weight gain; loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed; restlessness or irritability; persistent physical symptoms that don’t respond to treatment, such as headaches, chronic pain, or constipation and other digestive disorders; difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions; feeling guilty, hopeless, or worthless; thoughts of death or suicide.

The treatments: Most people who struggle with depression are able to thrive through a combination of talk therapy and medication.

Chronic fatigue

This baffling condition causes a strong fatigue that comes on quickly. People who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS, feel too tired to carry on with their normal activities and are easily exhausted with little exertion.

The symptoms: Other signs include headache, muscle and joint pain, weakness, tender lymph nodes, and an inability to concentrate. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, remains puzzling, because it has no known cause.

The tests: There is none. Your doctor must rule out other conditions with similar symptoms, such as lupus and multiple sclerosis, before making the diagnosis.

The treatments: Sadly, there is no approved medicinal cure for chronic fatigue. Self-care, antidepressants, talk therapy, or joining a support group may help.

Sleep apnea

You could have this sleep-disrupting problem if you wake up feeling tired no matter how much rest you think you got. Sleep apnea symptoms include brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. In the most common type, obstructive sleep apnea, your upper airway actually closes or collapses for 10 seconds or more, which prevents your brain from going into deeper stages of sleep like the REM stage. Someone with obstructive sleep apnea may stop breathing dozens or even hundreds of times a night.

The symptoms: Sleep apnea is often signaled by snoring and is generally followed by tiredness the next day. Because sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke, it’s important to be tested.

The tests: Your doctor may refer you to a sleep specialist who may want to perform a sleep study either at home or in a lab. This involves an overnight stay at a sleep clinic, where you’ll undergo a polysomnogram, which is a painless test that will monitor your sleep patterns, breathing changes, and brain activity.

The treatments: If you’re diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may be prescribed a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device, a mask that fits over your nose and/or mouth and blows air into your airways while you sleep.
