N. Korea Policy: Security Chiefs To Finalise Consultations On Washington’s new strategy

A trilateral meeting among the national security advisors of the U.S., South Korea and Japan held on Friday will play a pivotal role in finalizing the Biden administration’s new policy on North Korea.

That’s according to a senior U.S. official on the eve of the three-way security talks set to take place at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The security chiefs are expected to have final consultations on Washington’s new strategy toward North Korea before it’s unveiled to the rest of the world.

Adopting the format of a background press call, the official said the primary goal of Friday’s “private” talks is to ensure that the allies have a deep shared understanding of the circumstances taking place in North Korea.

The tone will be collaborative, he added, as Washington is open and prepared to take its Asian allies’ feedback on its North Korean policy formation process.

He also noted that the security chiefs’ meeting this week will not be the last but the first of many as the U.S. plans to work constantly with South Korea and Japan on shared goals of denuclearization and reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, on Thursday arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State to coordinate the ongoing search and rescue mission for the missing Alpha Jet which was lost during the Boko Haram combat mission in the North-East.

“The air chief arrived in Maiduguri on Thursday morning, where he was briefed on ongoing search and rescue efforts in connection with the missing Alpha Jet aircraft,” the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, stated in an update.

He urged the pilots, engineers and technicians to remain undeterred and resolute in their commitment to ensuring that peace returns to the North-East.

SaharaReporters had reported that the fighter jet went missing on Wednesdayaround 5pm, amidst fears that it might have been captured or shot down by the Boko Haram terrorists – who are now being aided by a more deadly faction, the Islamic State West African Province fighters.

The NAF also in a release confirmed the missing Alpha Jet, noting that the details of the whereabouts of the aircraft were still sketchy.

“A NAF Alpha-Jet has lost contact with radar in Borno State, while on interdiction mission in support of ground troops. The mission was part of the ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North East. The loss of radar contact occurred at about 5:08 pm on 31 March 2021.

“Details of the whereabouts of the aircraft or likely cause of contact loss are still sketchy but will be relayed to the general public as soon as they become clear. Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts are ongoing,” Gabkwet has stated.

The Alpha Jet, a light attack jet and advanced jet trainer aircraft, has played a significant role in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East theatre of operation.

It was acquired by NAF in 2014 from the United States of America air force.

It will be recalled that in February 2021, a NAF Beechcraft King Air 350i Surveillance Aircraft crashed in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The outcome of NAF’s supposed investigations into the crash had yet to be made public.

NEXIM Bank Launches N10 Billion Support For Exporters

The Nigerian Export and Import Bank (NEXIM) has launched a N10 billion Women and Youth Export Facility (WAYEF) to boost the non-oil exports.

The facility would be disbursed to small and medium entrepreneurs at a five per cent interest rate in the first year of the programme and a nine per cent interest rate in the subsequent years.

WAYEF aims to, among others, increase funding to indigenous women and youths towards broadening the export basket and facilitating regional industrialisation for value-addition.

The Executive Director Business Development Nexim Bank, Stella Okotete, during the official launch of WAYEF in Abuja noted that the aim is to support women and youths towards upscaling and expanding export capacities.

On how to access the fund, Okotete said applicants are expected to pay a non-refundable N20, 000 application fee.

She highlighted some of the requirements to include an application letter, relevant incorporation letter, valid export contract or Local Purchase Orders (LPOs), audited account statement, cash flow projections and evidence of previous export performance.

Global Travel, Tourism Sector Loses $4.5tn To Pandemic

The Economic Impact Report (EIR) of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) for 2020, released recently, shows Global travel and tourism sector has recorded an excess of $4.5 trillion revenue loss for Year 2020, which translates to about 50 per cent decline of its yearly turnover.

links the loss to the devastating impact of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State government has granted N1 billion worth of loans to tourism and hospitality practitioners in the state. The loans were meant to be seed capital to help drive new growth in the sector in the state.

Operators nationwide have estimated billions of naira loss to pandemic lockdown and slow restart of businesses in the COVID-19 era.

EIR showed that the sector’s contribution to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dropped a staggering 49.1 per cent, compared to the overall global economy that dropped by just 3.7 per cent last year.

Vast losses run-up during 2020 paint the first full picture of a sector struggling to survive in the face of crippling travel restrictions and unnecessary quarantines, which continue to threaten the urgent recovery of the world economy.

Altogether, the sector’s contribution to global GDP plummeted to $4.7 trillion in 2020 (5.5 per cent of the global economy), from nearly $9.2 trillion the previous year (10.4 per cent).

No Plans To Lift Ban On New SIM Card Registration Soon – FG

Telecom subscribers who are interested in getting new SIM cards may have to wait longer as the Federal Government on Thursday said it has no plans to lift the ban placed on new registration.

The government had in December 2020 imposed the ban as part of an audit exercise “to verify and ensure compliance by Mobile Network Operators with the set quality standards and requirements of SIM Card registration as issued by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Commission”.

The Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) were directed to “immediately suspend the sale, registration and activation of new SIM cards until the audit exercise is concluded, and the government has conveyed the new direction”.

But when the government lifted the suspension order on the replacement of SIM cards in January, it was silent on sale of new SIMs.

Speaking at the sixth edition of the ministerial briefing by the Presidential Media Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Isa Pantami said the government has no plans to lift the ban.
