British Airways Considers Selling Headquarters After Home Working Switch

0

British Airways says it’s considering selling headquarters building because of a switch to homeworking during the pandemic means it may no longer need so much office space.

The potential sale of the building, first reported by the Financial Times, could boost the airline’s finances which have been hammered by COVID-19.

The building was completed in 1998 at a cost of 200 million pounds ($279 million).

The shift to homeworking over the last year has already prompted some of Britain’s biggest companies to make changes to their office footprints. Banking giant Lloyds said it would cut office space by 20% within three years, with HSBC aiming for a 40% reduction.

The BA complex, Waterside, is near Heathrow Airport, west of London, and is also the headquarters of British Airways parent company, IAG.

British Airways said in a statement that many employees enjoyed working from home and its future policy would likely be a flexible mix of home and office working.

To survive the pandemic, British Airways has spent the last year cutting costs, including shedding over 10,000 employees, leaving it with about 30,000, most of whom don’t work in the office but are pilots, cabin crew, engineers or airport staff.

The airline has also sought to raise cash by selling famous works of art that formerly hung in its executive lounges.

Waterside’s long-term future was already hanging in the balance as it would need to be demolished if the proposed expansion of Heathrow goes ahead.

Volkswagen Announces To Increase Battery Cell Production For Electric Cars

0

World leading electric car manufacturers, Volkswagen present plan to produce batteries in-house.

The German carmaker said it will establish six battery factories with its partners in Europe by 2030.

Starting in Sweden and Germany, the company expects to secure the supply of batteries for its brands, and produce battery cells with an energy value of 240 gigawatt hours per year.

It also presented a plan to develop a new unified prismatic battery cell which is planned to be rolled out in 2023 and applied to as much as 80 percent of its electric vehicles in 2030.

Before Volkswagen made its move, Tesla announced its plan to reduce its reliance on outside suppliers for batteries.

Last September, the company said it had designed and was producing its own battery cells at a facility in Fremont.

Tesla also unveiled a plan to sharply reduce battery pack costs within three years.

In accordance with the plan, it agreed to acquire German ATW Automation, a supplier which assembles battery modules and packs, last October.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that within three years, the company can produce 25-thousand U.S. dollar full self-driving cars.

Another leading automaker, Ford also mentioned it looked into the possibility of making its own battery cells and packs last November.

Market observers say that electric car markers’ in-house production plans would put pressure on suppliers to lower prices, and therefore bring down overall battery costs.

Kunle Afolayan Concludes Filming Screen Adaptation Of Author Sefi Atta’s ‘Swallow’

Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has concluded the filming of the screen adaptation of Sefi Atta’s third novel ‘Swallow’ in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The movie follows the story of a naive bank secretary, Tolani Ajao, who, after a series of career woes, considers her roommate’s offer to work as a drug mule in mid-1980s Lagos.

However, Tolani faces a crisis of conscience, and as she questions her own morality in a repressive military regime, she finds herself flung into a journey of self-discovery.

It will also be the first screenwriting credit for the Nigerian novelist, who co-wrote the screen adaptation with Afolayan.

Books by the prize-winning Nigerian-American author have been translated into many languages and her stage plays have been performed internationally.

As is typical of the filmmaker, the cast is an interesting one comprising newbies, established actors, and Nigerian singer Eniola “Niyola” Akinbo in the lead role.

Other cast members are Chioma Akpotha, Deyemi Okanlawon, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Omotunde Adebowale, Eniola Badmus, Mercy Aigbe, Kelvin Ikeduba, Joke Muyiwa, BBNaija reality star Thin Tall Tony, and Olusegun Akinremi.

Oreofeoluwa Lawal of ‘mummy calm down’ fame also made his acting debut in the movie.

Afolayan gave the book a great spin while still maintaining the original storyline. Some scenes in the movie were also achieved with computer-generated imagery (CGI) and a green screen.

Speaking about the reasons he chose to adapt ‘Swallow’ into a screenplay, Afolayan said, ‘‘I read the book which is set in 1985/1986, it was a complicated story because it tells two parallel stories but the subject matter affects everyone globally. If we look at it from Nigeria’s point of view, drug peddling is a major issue here and no one really explored the themes in a Nigerian movie. It is peculiar to us and authentic to Africa. I also had to work with the writer to do the screenplay because the book is so good and I wanted to retain most of the contents of the book.”

Recall, Netflix recently announced that it had struck a partnership with Afolayan to produce and premiere three new diverse films.

‘Swallow’ is the first film on the lineup, the second is a folklore & fantasy story while the third is a film that deals with dementia, but with an African spiritual influence.

Diplomatic Spat: North Korea To Cut Relations With Malaysia

0

North Korea says it will cut diplomatic relations with Malaysia after a court there ruled that a North Korean man could be extradited to the United States over money laundering charges.

On March 9th, Malaysia’s top court ordered the extradition to the United States of a North Korean businessman.

In response, North Korea on Friday said it would cut diplomatic ties with Malaysia.

The foreign affairs ministry also warned Washington it would “pay a price” while saying Malaysia’s actions had entirely destroyed the foundation of the bilateral ties built on the respect for sovereignty.

A 56-year-old North Korean Mun Chol-myong had been arrested in 2019 after the U.S. accused him of money laundering and supplying prohibited luxury goods to North Korea.

He has rejected the charges, claiming the arrest was politically motivated. Pyeongyang also protested his innocence.

Hollywood Actor Armie Hammer Accused Of Rape

US actor Armie Hammer has been accused of raping a woman in Los Angeles in 2017.

The woman, a 24-year-old named only as Effie, made the allegations during a virtual news conference on Thursday.

Hammer, 34, denied the allegations. His lawyer said they were “outrageous” and Hammer “welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight”.

The accuser broke down while reading a prepared statement about the allegations against Hammer, known for films including The Social Network and Call Me By Your Name.

She spoke alongside high-profile women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred, alleging she first met Hammer on Facebook in 2016, when she was 20.

“I fell in love with him instantly,” she said.

The woman alleged that, as the relationship progressed, Hammer used “manipulation tactics in order to exert control over me”.

She said he would “test my devotion to him, finally removing and crossing my boundaries as he became increasingly more violent”.

The woman accused the actor of abusing her “mentally, emotionally and sexually”.

She said the alleged rape happened on 24 April, 2017.

She said: “Armie Hammer raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall, bruising my face.

“During those four hours, I tried to get away and he wouldn’t let me. I thought that he was going to kill me.

“He then left with no concern for my wellbeing. I was completely in shock and I couldn’t believe that someone I loved did that to me.”

She said she was left suicidal by the alleged rape, adding she felt “immense guilt” at not speaking out sooner.

In a statement, Hammer’s attorney refuted Effie’s claims as “outrageous,” saying all Hammer’s interactions with her and other partners “have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory.”
