US Senate Rejects Resolutions Aimed To Block Sale Of F-35s To UAE

0

The US Senate on Wednesday rejected two resolutions aimed to block the Trump administration’s F-35 sale to the United Arab Emirates.

The votes were 50-46 and 49-47 on a procedural motion that stopped the effort to pass a resolution disapproving of the sale.

Three US senators introduced different resolutions aimed at halting the sale of advanced arms to the United Arab Emirates, saying that the administration did not follow procedures in the sales process.

The administration of President Donald Trump formally notified Congress last month of its intention to sell the F-35 stealth jet in a deal worth over $23 billion, as well as other state-of-the-art systems.

US senators Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) announced that they are introducing four separate Joint Resolutions of Disapproval, “rejecting the Trump administration’s effort to provide the United Arab Emirates with a precedent-setting aircraft and myriad other weapons systems.”

Trump Announces Israel And Morocco To Establish Full Official Relations

0

Israel and Morocco have agreed to reestablish diplomatic relations, US President Donald Trump announced Thursday, marking the fourth Arab-Israel agreement in four months.

As part of the deal, the US will recognize Morocco’s claim over the disputed Western Sahara region.

As his time in office winds down, Trump said Israel and Morocco would restore diplomatic and other relations, including the immediate opening of liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv and the eventual opening of embassies. US officials said it would also include joint overflight rights for airlines.

srael and Morocco established low-level diplomatic relations during the 1990s following Israel’s interim peace accords with the Palestinians, but those ties were suspended after the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising in 2000. Since then, however, the informal ties have continued, and an estimated 50,000 Israelis travel to Morocco each year on trips, learning about the Jewish community and retracing family histories.

The White House said Trump and Morocco’s King Mohammed VI had agreed in a conversation that Morocco would “resume diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel and expand economic and cultural cooperation to advance regional stability.”

Smallholder farmers are crucial to food security – NEPAD boss

0

NEPAD has stated that smallholder farmers’ capacity must be enhanced and strengthened to end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.

Ms Gloria Akobundu, National Coordinator, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), has stated that to end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030, smallholder farmers’ capacity must be enhanced and strengthened.

She made this statement in Abuja at a stakeholders forum, tagged: “Strengthening Smallholder Farmers Capacities Towards Productive Land Restoration Amid COVID-19 in Nigeria.”

According to a news report by NAN, the National Coordinator of NEPAD said the forum is concerned with accelerating food security in Nigeria and cushioning the effect of COVID-19 towards building long-term resilience for sustainable economic growth and development.

According to her, government needs to take more proactive steps to improve nutrition and food supply. She, therefore, called on the Federal Government to effectively address the issue of hunger and food insecurity by actively involving smallholder farmers across the country.

She explained that this would not only help in winning the war against hunger and the widespread food insecurity in the country, but would go a long way to boost food production and strengthen economic resilience, in a bid to stimulate and enhance sustainable economic growth and development.

In this vein, Akobundu added that if the various intervention programmes were implemented, new jobs would be created, poverty reduced, while more youths would be engaged more positively.

Again, Israel To Normalize Relations With Arabian Country

The nation of Israel is set to normalize bilateral relations with Morocco, a north African (Arab) country.

The United States president Donald Trump disclosed this in a tweet on Thursday.

According to Trump, the U.S. government will back Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara.

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco have agreed to full diplomatic relations – a massive breakthrough for peace in the Middle East!

“Today, I signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara. Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal is the ONLY basis for a just and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity!” he tweeted.

The development is coming after Israel had normalized relations with three Arabian countries – United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

Just In: Nigeria to get COVID-19 vaccine January 2021, says Okonjo-Iweala

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has assured Nigeria and other African countries of access to COVID-19 vaccines from the end of January through the first quarter of 2021, a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

The statement quoted Okonjo-Iweala as disclosing this after a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja.

“As long as one person has it in the world, no one is safe. And that is why poorer countries, lower-middle-income countries like Nigeria, need to get it as quickly as possible,” she was quoted as saying.

Okonjo-Iweala is currently the African Union Special Envoy on mobilising international economic support for the continental fight against COVID-19 and Nigeria’s candidate for the Office of the Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

She disclosed that the international initiative involved the World Health Organisation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, GAVI, and the international community, to get vaccines delivered to developing and poorer countries, in an affordable manner and quickly.

According to her, the Pfizer vaccine and the AstraZeneca were presently being negotiated so that poor countries don’t have to stand in a queue behind rich countries.

The former finance minister described Africans as blessed, for not having the same incidence rate of COVID-19 as other continents, but warned African nations against complacency.

Okonjo-Iweala recalled that a platform called the COVAX facility had been developed with 186 countries on board, saying that the side interested in serving the poor countries had 92 countries, for which resources have been raised to try and get the vaccines to them quickly.

“So, the Pfizer vaccine, the AstraZeneca, those are being negotiated now so that poor countries don’t have to stand in line behind rich countries.

“So, we hope they are starting by the end of January. We will be able to reach these countries, including most of the African countries, Nigeria included, will be able to get access to some of these vaccines.

“Initially, it will be for frontline health workers, followed by some other target groups – older people, those with underlying conditions, and then, from there, the rest of the population. I think the COVAX facility can cover maybe 20-23 per cent of the population by the end of next year,” Okonjo-Iweala said

Domestic Violence: Stuck On Stockholm?

When you hear words like, “he will change”, ‘he won’t do it again”, he said I’m sorry”, know for a fact that you are no longer needed at the scene.

Less than a week ago Nigerians were screaming bloody murder over the so-called wife beater, Pius Angbo, a Channels Tv reporter, but alas the story has changed.

Dr. Mrs Ifeyinwa Angbo, wife of Angbo, has given the public the boot as she warned everyone to mind their business.

In her words; “Mind your business and leave my family alone. I have reconciled with my husband. Going forward, I want to make my marriage work. All we need now is your prayers.”

This is not surprising at all. It’s been a very common phenomenon, not just in our clime, but in other parts of the world.

In my previous article I mentioned the Stockholm syndrome and what it means. It is now very pertinent to go a bit further into the origin of the concept. Stockholm syndrome is a condition in which hostages develop a psychological alliance with their captors during captivity. The concept became popular in 1973 when two men held four people hostage for 6 days after a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. After the hostages were released, they refused to testify against their captors and even began raising money for their defense. (Source- Healthline)

After that, psychologists and mental health experts assigned the term “Stockholm syndrome” to the condition that occurs when hostages develop an emotional or psychological connection to the people who held them in captivity.

Apart from the strong societal lashes an abuse victim could get, such a person ultimately has the major role to play in achieving total emancipation from her abuser. No matter what advocates of “leave the abusive environment” tell a victim, no matter how many times she lands in the emergency room, if such a person doesn’t come to terms with the need to step out from such a bubble, there’s no breaking the cycle.

The sanctity of marriage is enshrined in the Bible and custom, it really shouldn’t be toyed with. Then the question that needs to be answered is, how sanctimonious is a union cemented by daily blows?

Let’s see some globally authenticated statistics. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), violence against women – particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence – is a major public health problem and a violation of women’s human rights.

Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Most of this violence is intimate partner violence. Worldwide, almost one third (30%) of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner in their lifetime.

Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by a male intimate partner.

It is also true that most abused women will remain in the marriage and eventually die from the violence. Some questions; do victims know they can die from the abuse? Do they in the first place know that they are being abused?

In my next article I will focus on a special class of special victims in an abusive environment that are usually overlooked -children.

Export-Bound Goods Worth N868b Stuck In Seaports

Export-Bound goods worth about N868 billion might be wasted at seaports, unless the Federal Government tackles obstacles inhibiting export trade. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had directed exporters to register with the Nigeria Export Proceeds (NXP) agency before exporting their goods. Some of them have failed to meet deadlines for registration and had their cargoes stuck at seaports.

Exporters have consistently appealed to CBN and other government agencies to liberalise the process to encourage struggling entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to embark on a three-day warning strike from today, December 9, over deplorable state of access roads to seaports in Lagos State.

The Shippers Association Lagos State (SALS) has appealed to the union to shelve the planned action considering the volume of export cargoes trapped in the ports.

House Of Reps. Pushes 70% Aviation Investments For Nigerian Airport Infrastructure

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Aviation, yesterday, directed the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to channel at least 70 per cent of its aviation investments at improving airports’ critical infrastructure nationwide.

The committee on a tour of the aviation agencies in Lagos said improved attention at aeronautical and non-aeronautical facilities were most critical to security and safety.

This is coming as FAAN gave an account of its 2020 earnings, disclosing that it earned, at least, N30 billion between January and September, with only N2 billion remitted into the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) account.

Chairman of the Committee, Nnolim Nnaji, said paying strategic attention to airport infrastructure and driving investment were most critical at this period of a global pandemic and economic downturn.

The lawmakers hinted that provisions of the new aviation industry bill, currently before the house, would be friendly to staff of the agencies, airline operators, and the industry at large when passed into law.

They also pledged to support the industry with the necessary legislation. Among these is the push for the retention of 25 per cent of FAAN’s generated revenue, “to enable the Authority put in place a 10-year development plan and use the funds to build critical infrastructure for the aviation industry”.

Managing Director of FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, told the lawmakers that as at September 30, 2020, FAAN generated a total of N30, 084, 235, 670, during the nine months target, out of which N27, 967, 455, 341 was the actual collection.

He called on the lawmakers to give accelerated attention to the agency’s budget, and expedite action on legislation that would help the agency fast track its operations across the airports.
