Financial Responsibility: What It Means To The Average Woman In Nigeria

Financial responsibility, especially with the current fluctuating state of the world’s economies is one thing many people wish they had learned in school.
According to readyratios.com, “Financial responsibility refers to the process of managing money and other similar assets in a way that is considered productive.” Financial responsibility is always in the best interest of the individual.


For women in Nigeria, we have come a long way from the times when women were not expected to be financially independent or self-sufficient. Female children were, once upon a time not allowed to contribute opinions when serious family issues were being discussed because the only time they contributed financially (In some cultures) to said family, was when they were given out in marriage.


“This affected how my mother was treated by her in-laws,” my 86 year old grandmother recounted, “because, by the time she was 15 years in marriage, things were not as smooth as they had been before. She was now expected to contribute to the family without any source of income or financial intelligence.” All my great grandmother had, were homemaking skills, the one they told her would make her a good wife.
Discussing money with my grandmother, I asked how that affected how she controlled her finances. She said she went to school to be a teacher.

Secret Stashes.
For women today, being in my great grandmother’s shoes is not an option. Many women have jobs that are just as important as anybodys. It is also not uncommon to see women who earn just as much or even more than their spouses. But earning capacity is not the same as financial responsibility for the women that took to social media to comment on the idea of secret stashes.
The idea that women, earning or not, find ways to hide money and properties from their spouses and loved ones took the men who saw the post and read the comments by extreme surprise. The ones who were not surprised expressed discontent on the basis that it was dishonest.

But is the aim of secret stashes really to be dishonest?
In 2020, most women do not agree with being completely dependent on another adult or not being able to provide support in their homes. In a relationship where both parties know everything there is to know about each other, most people feel powerful when they have little things to themselves, including money. Many times these secret stashes have saved families and come in handy in times of dire need.

Unfortunately, there will always be the need for women to have money they can depend on as many victims of Gender-Based Violence stayed in abusive situations because they could not care for themselves outside those relationships. Many parents are teaching their children multiple streams of income and advising daughters to buy up properties with their monies and hide them if their husbands do not permit.
The list of realities that confront the average Nigerian woman includes an extravagant husband who is profligate and has no savings. He is also well aware of what his wife earns and as the husband, is “entitled” to it, under the guise of providing for the family. In this case, the stash is more of a security blanket than a mere desire to be deceitful.

Depending on your spouse or your situation, a stash may not be secret, just as it may also not be a wad of physical cash. A secret stash could be property or investment, anything that can serve as a security blanket or “vex money.” Having this, for the most part, is being financially responsible to the Nigerian woman.

Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, has said, Nigeria’s investments in the 44 free trade zones across the country currently stand at over $27 billion, the Managing Director, Nigeria Export Promotion Zone Authority (NEPZA).

Adesugba,said the investments are expected to further spur economic diversification and job creation for the youths, adding that but for the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dangote Refinery would have commenced operations and opened up the economy quicker and better.

The Committee is to work out modalities on how best to promote investments in the agriculture, mining and tourism sectors with a view to creating employment, and increasing internally-generated revenues for the state in particular and Nigeria in general.

Studies show that interruptions may have calming effects on the mind but may stress the body

A Swiss study finds that being interrupted while we work produces a paradoxical effect. When you work in an office, you have to remain productive despite continual interruptions. After a while, responding to questions, texts, calls, and emails becomes less annoying as you develop the habit of calmly picking up where you left off.

However, new research from Switzerland finds that this calm is only superficial.

Continual interruptions at work lead to an unconscious increase in the stress hormone cortisol. The study finds that although we may think continual interruptions do not bother us, they affect us on a physiological level.

A recent study by Stiftung Gesundheitsförderung Schweiz, Job Stress Index 2020, reveals that almost a third of Swiss office workers experience workplace stress.

Concerned about the health effects of chronic stress — which may include exhaustion alongside other adverse outcomes — a multidisciplinary team from the Mobiliar Lab for Analytics at ETH Zurich embarked on a mission to find ways to detect and remediate workplace stress. The team hopes to develop a machine learning-based tool that can detect stressors before they become a chronic problem.

“Our first step was to find out how to measure the effects of social pressure and interruptions — two of the most common causes of stress in the workplace,” says psychologist Jasmine Kerr. The other team members are mathematician Mara Nägelin and computer scientist Raphael Weibel. All three are doctoral candidates at ETH Zuric.

A DAY AT THE OFFICE

Kerr, Nägelin, and Weibel recruited 90 individuals — 44 females and 46 males between 18–40 years of age — willing to participate in experiments lasting just under 2 hours. The research team paid each participant 75 Swiss francs for taking part.

Setting the stage for these tests, the researchers converted the ETH Zurich Decision Science Laboratory into three simulated office spaces, each with multiple workstation rows. Every workstation had a computer, monitor, chair, and a kit with which the “worker” could collect saliva samples for the researchers. The samples were analyzed to assess individuals’ levels of cortisol.

In each session, 10 individuals were placed in one of the offices at a fictional insurance company, with the three groups exposed to three different levels of stress. All participants took part in typical office tasks, including typing up handwritten documents and arranging client appointments. During the sessions, they were questioned six different times regarding their mood. Portable devices measured their heartbeats as the researchers tracked cortisol levels in their saliva samples.

STRESS ARRIVES

During the experiment, actors portraying company HR personnel were introduced to each office group. For the first group, the control group, the HR personnel presented a sales pitch dialog. The two other groups were exposed to stress. They were informed that the HR personnel were seeking candidates for promotion.

The workers in the first of these groups continued to go about their work uninterrupted, except to provide saliva samples. The second group was interrupted by chat messages from superiors with urgent requests for information. Both of the stress groups reported that their sessions were challenging.

According to Nägelin, “participants in the second stress group released almost twice the level of cortisol as those in the first stress group.

”Surprisingly, individuals in the second group did not feel particularly stressed, even though their increased cortisol levels told a different story. In fact, individuals from the continually interrupted group reported feeling less stressed and being in better spirits than the first, uninterrupted stress group.

The researchers hypothesize, according to the study, that “psychological stress response seemed to be blunted by work interruptions.” Therefore, the study paradoxically suggests that while interruptions negatively affect us physiologically, they may actually help psychologically by providing brief respites from workload stress

The Trump administration has formally informed the United States Congress of its intention to sell dozens of F-35 advanced fighter jets and other military hardware to the United Arab Emirates, the Washington Post reported Monday.

The deal for the UAE to acquire the stealth F-35s has raised concerns in Israel that it would erode the country’s regional military edge, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drawing criticism for allegedly authorizing it in the context of Israel’s normalization with Abu Dhabi.

The package will include 50 F-35 jets, as well as 18 Reaper drones and thousands of bombs and missiles, according to the report.

If US lawmakers oppose the deal they have 30 days to produce a resolution to block the sale, though two-thirds of Congress would be needed to override a presidential veto.

Adariko Michael, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigating officer, says the sum of N2.2 billion was spent by Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA), and Aminu Baba-Kusa, a former general manager of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), on prayers to defeat Boko Haram.

Dasuki, Baba-Kusa, Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited are alleged to have been involved in the diversion of over $2 billion meant for purchase of arms to fight insurgency in the north-east.

The anti-graft agency had preferred a 32-count charge against the defendants bordering on misappropriation and criminal breach of trust among others.

Testifying before Husseini Baba-Yusuf, a judge of the Abuja federal high court, on Tuesday, Michael said on different occasions, funds were sent from a special account of the NSA to the other defendants.

The EFCC official said N750 million was sent to Reliance Referral Hospital and N650 million was sent to Acacia Holdings.

He said Acacia Holdings later received separate sums of N600 million and N200 million, respectively.

Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said Nigeria is targeting to realize up to $10 billion from the Blockchain technology by 2030,

Abdullahi, who disclosed this in Abuja at the Stakeholder Engagement for the Review of the National Blockchain Adoption Strategy, said that the government wants to harness the potential in Blockchain, and has seen the need to position the country to capture value from the value chain.

He noted that a recent publication by PwC showed that in the next 10 years blockchain is going to contribute $1.76trillion to the global gross domestic product (GDP).

He added the Agency we want Nigeria to be strategically placed to capture value for this economic potential of Blockchain and that is why we are doing what we do today, to get all the stakeholders in one room, brainstorm and come up with a strategy, Nigeria benefit from the technology.”

During the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden, Chris Wallace of Fox News asked Biden if he would “pledge not to declare victory until the election is independently certified,” to which the former vice president answered, “yes.”

“Will you urge your supporters to stay calm while the vote is counted, and will you pledge not to declare victory until the election is independently certified?” asked Wallace of Biden at the first presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Yes,” answered Biden.

Biden, however, has done nothing of the sort, as he has since carried on as if he is president-elect, promising that “we’re going to get right to work,” as he seemingly ignores the fact that the 2020 presidential election has not yet been independently certified.

The former vice president has also since urged all Americans to “wear a mask,” insisting that the “election is over.”

“The election is over,” Biden claimed. “I won’t be president until January 20, but my message today is to everyone — it doesn’t matter who you voted… we can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone would just wear a mask for the next few months.”

Biden ended up delivering his victory speech on Saturday night, four days after the election.

Meanwhile, the 2020 presidential election has yet to be certified, as members of President Trump’s administration maintain that the president may actually be reelected.

Federal Government of Nigeria mandatory NHIS for NYSC corps members

Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed it has been directed by Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, to enlist corps members in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). According to the NYSC leadership, arrangement has been concluded to implement the presidential directive.

“Furthermore, the scheme has concluded arrangement with the NHIS for the enrolment of corps members into the NHIS in line with a presidential directive. We have also expended huge resources on critical health needs of corps members, including footing of medical bills,” said Director-General of NYSC, Shuaibu Ibrahim.

Experts described the presidential directive as geared towards improving and expanding public adoption of health insurance in Nigeria which has been unable to attract impressive and extensive voluntary interest among the general public.
The significant proportion of enrolees under the NHIS scheme in Nigeria has been workers in the public service sector who were compulsorily signed up for the scheme by the government and dues being deducted monthly from their salaries.

For the NYSC corps members, this implies that they would be automatically registered under NHIS while the management of the organisation will work out modalities with the NHIS on how dues will be paid, if the corps members will be required to pay.

In a related development, NYSC has also expressed its readiness to resume activities at its orientation camps. To achieve this safely in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYSC is working with the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

“They will all participate in the Orientation exercise, which has been planned to take place in three streams for ease of compliance with the COVlD-19 protocols,” Ibrahim said. Following the ease of the COVlD-19 lockdown and the green light from the Presidential Task Force for NYSC to make preparations for safe resumption of our Orientation Course, the Scheme has been working in liaison with the NCDC to achieve the desired outcomes,” he added.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF DONALD TRUMP AND THE NEW AMERICAN ERA

It always amuses me when Nigerian Americans assume they know best about events in America. Let me assure them that there are many learned Nigerians, especially those who have also experienced the US, that  know as much as you do.

In my own case, I know America well, but I am both a British and Nigerian Citizen.  I am fully aware of American History, Politics and Government. American History was one of my best subjects in school, as were British and West African history, but I chose to finally settle in the UK.

Now, let me predict the events that are going to happen in America, before and after Trump is sworn in, in January 2021.

First, note that States have not signed off the elections, and until they do so in all States, the Media and Biden claims to be President-Elect is only a confidence trick, designed to put pressure on Trump to back down. If you know anything about Trump, you would know that is like waving a red flag to a Bull.

The cases launched by Rudi Gulliani, Trump’ lawyer, at the Supreme Court will expose the massive irregularities and outright polling frauds perpetrated by the Democrats.

Some votes that cannot be accounted for will be cancelled. Some that were late will also be cancelled and/or recounted, and those will mostly be from Biden. Trump will win those States.  In States were evidence has been destroyed, fresh elections will be ordered in specific counties or across the entire State. Trump will win outright.

Now there is something you may not realise or may have forgotten about America. It is encapsulated in my language of Igbo: “Ana enwe Obodo enwe.” In other words, there are those who truly own the land. When they flex their muscles, you will truly know who owns the land.

The true owners of America, whether morally right or wrong are the WASPs – White Anglo-Saxon America. In their minds, whether right or wrong, their grand parents captured and tamed America.  This election that has tried to destroy for them, the dream of recovering their land and values, will be for them, the straw that broke the Camel’s back.

In their eyes, whether morally right or wrong, they have shared their land with strangers, they have given them rights, and now they want to take back their lands and reinstate the values they cherish – a Christian land that upholds family values, rejects abortion, homosexual supremacy and the joy of calling Christmas by its name, but these strangers poke fingers in their eyes, mock them, call them deplorable and want to rob them of their electoral victory. You may argue all you want about American Indians being the original owners, but that would be like water of a duck’s back.

There is a saying amongst my people, the Igbo: “Onye akpakwana agu aka n’odu”,  which means, “Do not touch the tail of the leopard”.  White America is the silent majority and White America is angry. Donald Trump is furious at the massive insult he has received all across the world.

For Donald Trump and White America, the true conquerors of the land in the days of Might is Right, all bets are off; all pretences are off and now we shall all see raw racism and the true meaning of Might is Right.

A little diversion to illustrate.

In 1966, a group of young military men in Nigeria, led mainly by Igbo officers and a Yoruba Office, carried out a coup that killed the Sardauna of Sokoto. Then some Igbos in the North mocked them with the song “Ewu n’ebe akwa”, meaning the goat is crying. It was a mockery of the entire Muslim Northern Nigeria that they were crying like goats. Whether right or wrong, they decided to show that they were owners of the land. First 300 Igbo soldiers were killed, then 30,000 Igbos were slaughtered in the North, then they followed the Igbos into Biafra and slaughtered 3 million more.

What will be coming from White America, tge Wsps will Not be genocide but still, a a social and political Tsunami.  Never underrate the power of mockery. On the day Joe Biden declared himself President, they danced on the grave of a leopard that was not yet dead. They touched its tail and mocked him and White America and called them Supremacists and deplorables and laughed at them. I laugh too – at their whimsical foolishness.

There is yet another proverb that says, “He who laughs last, laughs best.”  Nancy Pelosi, foolishly said, “We have won the war. ” So all those skirmishes, the Russian Hoax, the lies of CNN, the fake news, the false impeachment, the derailing of a COVID package, were never about the welfare of the American people.  It was all just about winning a partisan war at the detriment of the American people. The staged battles of Black Lives Matter and Antifa have suddenly turned into street parties of mocking, manic mendacity. Unfortunately, Nancy Pelossi was wrong. The celebrants are wrong. They have not won the war, because the real war has just begun and their will be many casualties.

Donald Trump and White America, the WASPs, the Christian Majority are silently furious at the attempted removal of Donald Trump by a crooked ballot coup and now all gloves are off. They will start baying for blood, and they will not stop for many years to come till they fully assert their rights over the land, so that strangers will know that they are strangers and not landlords.

First the Supreme Courts: votes will be counted, new elections will take place and Donald Trump will be fully vindicated as the fraud is exposed. He will simply continue as POTUS.

Then the retributions. First the Heads of FBI and CIA will go for failing to act on a number of glaring criminal cases in loyalty to the Obama, Biden era. All those that participated in criminal electoral heists will be arrested.

Antifa and Black Lives Matter will rise in protest and this time the National Guards will be released to beat them into line. Violence will erupt but they will be subdued.

Then the Big Fish will follow. Hunter Biden, Hilary Clinton will be brought before Justice on criminal charges. Finally, Joe Biden himself after he has been shown to be fully involved in his son’s business and colluded with Ukraine and China to undermine American interests. Barrack Obama, who knew what was going on but turned a blind eye, will be spared as a for President.

Next, the big oligarchies and globalist brands will be broken up. Facebook, Twitter, Google  YouTube, etc would either become fully neutral platforms or true publishers that can be sued for content.

Next the Publishers. New laws against fake news and to ensure that the News Media will never ever be partisan again will come into place. All foreign investment in American media will be removed to ensure that foreigners, especially Arabs can never stake any ownership of shares of News media.

Media houses will be broken up and organisations that investigate or counter fake news will be on the rise, backed by law. News media and publishers will be broken up to be owned by American citizens and purely for the purpose of news and not propaganda or partisan commentary.

Immigration will become tighter and a lot of illegals who are not yet settled will be thrown out of the country. Greater immigration will be permitted for WASP countries and not for those people that naturally support the Democrats. Immigrants that naturally support Democrats will find it more difficult .

Within 2 years the House of Representatives will be mercilessly assaulted as they take over the majority in the Senate and in the House.

The economic war against China will escalate and China will pay a heavy price for the COVID Plandemic as countries world-wide will be forced to choose between trading with China or the US.

Finally America will be declared a Christian and Democratic nation and both Communism and Radical Islamism will be openly declared enemy ideologies and fought with the same resolute ruthlessness employed by Reagan in the defeat of Communism.

Donald Trump will be very successful with the economy, will finally defeat COVID and emerge at the other end with his status grown and his enemies vanquished.

By the time Donald Trump is through with America and the World, he would have the same respect given to great leaders like Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy and Reagan. Leaders who took their countries through extraordinary times; black America and the working class would be fully behind him.

There would be the new economic ideology of Trumpism that seeks to unite the interests of the entrepreneur and the worker, rather than divide them; that encourages a new rise of enterprise amongst all ethnic groups with the return of manufacturing; that confronts, expels and destroys totalitarian ideologies such as communism and radical Islamism, whilst upholding democracy and human rights; and which defends religious freedom and family values globally.

These crises, battles and war, manufactured by the Democrats were, at first, confusing to Donald Trump, but with this election fiasco, having been burnt in its political fire, he will transform from ordinary to extraordinary; from President to historical icon.

I have been looking for words to explain what is about to happen and I stumbled on this masterpiece by Agha Egwu.
