US Officially Removes Sudan From State Sponsors Of Terrorism List

0

According to U.S embassy in Khartoum, Sudan has been officially removed from a list of state sponsors of terror.

In a statement posted by the US embassy on social media, it read in parts “The congressional notification period of 45 days has lapsed and the Secretary of State has signed a notification stating rescission of Sudan’s State Sponsor of Terrorism designation is effective as of today (December 14), to be published in the Federal Register.”

US President Donald Trump had in October said Sudan will come off the list after it pays compensation of $335m (£259m) to victims and families of al-Qaeda’s 1998 bombing of US embassies in Africa.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had responded by saying the funds had been transferred.

Sudan was listed in 1993 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden lived there as a guest of the government. It was along with Iran, North Korea and Syria.

Kenya Hosts Leader Of Self-Declared Republic Of Somaliland

0

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Monday hold talks with the President of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, amid frosty relations with neighbouring Somalia.

Somalia had last month expelled Kenya’s ambassador to Mogadishu and recalled its envoy from Nairobi. It accused Kenya of alleged interference in its internal and political affairs.

Kenya’s foreign affairs ministry said the talks between President Kenyatta and President Bihi will be on “mutual interests”.

In a message posted on social media by the ministry, it said “Somaliland is an important partner in the Horn of Africa region in the fight against terrorism and particularly al-Shabab,” adding that this is the second visit by a Somaliland leader following a similar one by President Kahin Riyale Kahin in 2006.

Somaliland declared independence in 1991 but is not officially recognised by the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) or any country.

Communal Clashes: Olu of Warri Decries attacks

0

The Olu of Warri, His Majesty, Ogiame Ikenwoli, has bemoaned the prevailing bloodbath at settling communal disputes just as he reiterated his commitment to peace and cooperation among the various ethnic nationalities in Delta State.

The frontline traditional ruler made the assertions at his Ajamimorha Royal Palace on Saturday on the occasion of the celebration of his fifth coronation anniversary which he described as “a significant milestone”.

The monarch specifically called for peaceful coexistence between the Itsekiri and their neighours in Delta declaring that “no human needs, wants, demands or ambition is worth the blood of any of our people”.

He also urged the youths under the umbrella body of Itsekiri National Youth Council to sheathe swords and embrace unity for the organisation to thrive.

The monarch said, “We, however, must point out that whatever grievances they (the people) have should be pursued in a way that will continue to engender peaceful peaceful coexistence and discourage violence and bloodshed. No human needs, wants, demands or ambition is worth the blood of any of our people.

“We, therefore, stand ready and prepared to do all that we can to continue to promote peace and contribute to the security of lives and national assets in our kingdom within the three Warri local government areas.”

Abducted Students: Outrage as Katsina Gov says 333 still missing

0

Prominent groups and Nigerians from different walks of life, on Sunday, took a swipe at the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over Friday’s abduction of students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.

Most of those who reacted said Buhari had failed and said they were shocked that the President had not visited the school despite the fact that he is in Katsina State on a weeklong vacation.

Those, who commented on the abduction of the students and Buhari’s inaction, included the Coalition of Northern Groups; the Middle Belt Forum; the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin; the Pan Niger Delta Forum; and the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Also, on Sunday, several Nigerians took to the social media to lambast the President for failing to visit the school.

However, the Presidency, through the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said its focus was how to quickly resolve the issue thrown up by the abduction of the students, and not politics.

Shehu said this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, who sought to know from him when Buhari was planning to visit the school.

In responding, the presidential aide said, “As I speak to you, the Minister of Defence and the nation’s service chiefs just left the place.”

When told that Nigerians were already faulting the President for sending a delegation, while he is currently in the state, Shehu said, “Our focus is about resolving the issue. Leave us out of politics.”

Buhari criticised for failing to visit school

Several Nigerians took to the social media to criticise the President for failing to visit the school and wondered why he would ask the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, to travel to Katsina State from Abuja, when he (Buhari) was currently in the same state on vacation.

One @SodiqTade tweeted, “My problem right now is Buhari sending delegates to Katsina from Abuja while he is currently in the same state. It takes minutes to get to the school but no let’s waste resources.

“Those who asked Goodluck Jonathan to travel miles from Kano down to the incident site in Borno on same day are now making ‘long distance’ excuse for Buhari. Even though the incident site is Katsina and Buhari is in the same Katsina. They said 150 minutes road journey is much for him.”

@EhiOziegbe tweeted, “Buhari should resign if he is not well. How can he be in Katsina and a delegation is going there? There is something that is not adding up with all the nonsense happening in the North.”

Similarly, one @Boufdadi tweeted, “Where is Buhari? Why isn’t he showing his face? Why can’t he go and commiserate with the parents of the abducted children? There are things we are not being told. Time will tell us these things.”

Another tweep, @maojawo, described the visit by the delegation as a waste of public resources.

“Wastage seems to be the only thing this government know how to do. Buhari in Katsina cannot pay condolence to the people, he sent people from Abuja to do it for him. The time, energy, and resources for it are wasted,” he tweeted.

“Is the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria not in Katsina State? Only God knows how much fund will go down into this visit,” @aladeniyi_ asked.

In his contribution, @DanielBalogun wondered why Buhari could not cut short his vacation to visit the school and commiserate with families of the victims.

“This does not add up. Ordinarily, the sitting President will cut short his private visit to attend to issue in his state. He should be seen with Masari to find the 333/600 students remaining. Another lesser delegation? Really? Is Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo also incapacitated?” he tweeted.

Be a man of honour, resign, M’Belt Forum tells Buhari

The Middle Belt Forum, on Sunday, asked the President to resign from his position having failed to tackle the security challenges facing the country.

Speaking with one of our correspondents in Jos, the National President of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr Bitrus Porgu, lamented the incident and wondered why Buhari, who promised to bring insurgency to an end within three months of assuming office, would continue to remain in power for more than six years without solving the problem.

Porgu said, “As far as we are concerned, in a civilised society, he would have resigned as an honourable person, because he has not been able to fulfil his promise to Nigerians.

“Unfortunately, in our clime, that has not happened, because people are not people of honour. The abduction in Kastina is just one too many. Those who abducted the young students will go and initiate them forcefully into terrorism and this is an unfortunate development.

“As the students were abducted, just yesterday (Saturday), a village south of Chibok in Borno State was attacked by terrorists, and from the information I gathered, two soldiers were killed along with one civilian, while the soldiers were able to bring down two of the insurgents.”

On his part, Odumakin said the nation had become virtually ungoverned under the President.

“The position of the President has become untenable and it is a wasteful venture calling for his resignation. The country under him is virtually ungoverned and practically ungovernable,” he stated.

While sympathising with the families of the abducted students, PANDEF described the action as condemnable and unacceptable, especially as it happened in the President’s home state.

It, however, said calls for the resignation of Buhari over the prevailing insecurity in the country was misplaced.

The spokesman for PANDEF, Ken Robinson, who stated this in a chat with one of our correspondents, said there were constitutional provisions to fall back on if the President was failing in his responsibilities.

He stated, “The fact remains that this administration of Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians and has failed to secure and protect the lives and property of Nigerians across the country.”

On its part, Ohanaeze Ndigbo said calling for the resignation of the President because of the pervading insecurity in the country would not solve the problem.

Ohanaeze’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke to one of our correspondents, asked: “If he resigns, who solves the problem?

“You can consider that in a sane clime, but we have not yet built sanity in our polity. Those that may be genuinely asking him to resign will become attack dogs if you tell them. Our real solution is restructuring our polity.”

Self-defence only option left for northerners – CNG

But the Coalition of Northern Group said the call for the resignation of the President, would not be out of place.

According to the CNG, the only option left for northerners in the current face of insecurity, is self defence.

The CNG’s Spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman told one of our correspondents in Kaduna on Sunday that the organisation was pained by the renewed onslaught of attacks on Northerners by bandits.

Brexit Trade Talks Sees New Push To Reach Agreement

0

Negotiators from the UK and EU are to begin a new push to reach agreement on post-Brexit trade after both sides agreed “to go the extra mile”.

A UK source said the “process still has some legs” but Boris Johnson has warned a no-deal is the “most likely” outcome.

A deadline to finish talks had been set for Sunday, but the prime minister and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen agreed to an extension.

The pair discussed “major unresolved topics” during a “constructive” call.

They agreed to tell negotiators to carry on talks in Brussels “to see whether an agreement can even at this late stage be reached”.

They did not say how long these latest talks would continue, but the ultimate deadline is 31 December, and time must be allowed for the UK and European Parliaments to vote on any deal that emerges before then.

The major stumbling blocks in negotiations have been over fishing rights, a level playing field for businesses to operate and on how any agreement should be policed.

The UK and EU have been carrying out negotiations for a post-Brexit trade deal since March and are attempting to secure one before the so-called transition period ends on 31 December – when the two sides would move to trading on World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

White House confirms cyberattack report on U.S. Treasury by foreign government

1

The U.S. government has acknowledged reports that hackers backed by a foreign government have breached the U.S. Treasury Department and an agency within the Commerce Department.

“The United States government is aware of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation,” National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot told FOX Business in a statement.

According to Reuters, the elaborate cyber hack was launched on the Treasury Department as well as the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration, or NTIA, a U.S. agency that is tasked with crafting internet and telecommunications policy. Sources told the outlet that the hack was so serious it led to a National Security Council meeting on Saturday.

Hackers reportedly used the organization’s Microsoft Office 365 platform to monitor staff members emails for months.

A Treasury Deparment spokesperson deferred comment to the NSC. A spokesperson for the Commerce Department confirmed the breach, adding that it has “asked CISA and the FBI to investigate” but declining to comment any further. A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment to FOX Business.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA, said in a statement that the agency has been working closely with its partners regarding “recently discovered activity on government networks.”

“CISA is providing technical assistance to affected entities as they work to identify and mitigate any potential compromises,” the spokesperson added.

An FBI spokesperson said it can “neither confirm nor deny details related to any ongoing investigation,” citing the agency’s standard practice.

U.S President Trump Rejects Plan For Early Vaccines At White House

0

President of the United States Donald Trump has reversed a plan for White House officials to receive the coronavirus vaccine in the coming days.

Officials had said senior members of the Trump administration would be among the first people to be given the Pfizer/BioNTech jab.

But President Trump said he had asked for an “adjustment” to be made to the plans.

The vaccine was deemed safe by US regulators on Friday and will begin to be rolled out in the country on Monday.

It alleges to offers up to 95% protection against Covid-19.

The first three million doses of the vaccine are currently being distributed to dozens of locations in all 50 states across the US.

The first shipment of those doses left a facility in Michigan on Sunday, with health workers and the elderly in line to receive the first shots.

Common possible reasons why you have swollen fingers and hands

0

Are your fingers beginning to look like a fresh sausage? Fear not! Fingers swell for a lot of reasons, and many of them harmless. But sometimes the puffiness, medically known as dactylitis, points to more serious health conditions. Here are some of the common causes of swollen fingers, and when you should call your doctor.

1. It’s really hot outside

Heat causes blood vessels to expand, which allows more heat to escape through your skin so you can keep cool. As the vessels stretch, some of their fluid can leak into your soft tissues and cause puffiness.

This type of swelling tends to go away as you use your hands and continue your regular activity. But if you notice swelling only in your hands and fingers (and not your legs), accompanied by pain or a weak grip, that could be a sign it’s not just the heat and you need to consult your doctor.

2. You’re eating too much salt

Chicken, lots of chips, or anything fried could be the cause behind your swollen fingers. Your body likes to keep a consistent salt-to-water balance, so when you down extra sodium, it compensates by retaining more water.

Typically, mild swelling brought on by salty foods goes away on its own within a day but it can last longer depending on how much extra salt is in your system. If you cut back on salt and the swelling persists, see your doctor.

3. You may have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis

If it’s the bony finger joints themselves that are enlarged (say, you can’t get rings over your knuckles), osteoarthritis may be to blame, especially if your swollen fingers appear in the morning. This age-related form of arthritis is caused by the wearing down of the cushioning tissues at the end of your joints. Osteoarthritis is often, but not always, accompanied by pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that attacks the lining of the joints, can also cause swelling. Unlike osteoarthritis, RA isn’t age-related and can happen to anyone at any age. Swelling in people with RA often happen in the wrists and finger joints.

4. An infection or injury could be to blame

Infections in your fingers, known as felons, cause your fingers (particularly around the tip, pad, or nail) to fill up with pus. Infections can form in different ways, but dishwashing without gloves, manicures, ingrown nails, hangnails, and biting your nails can all transfer bacteria to your fingers and lead to swelling, redness, and throbbing pain. Minor traumas and injuries, like cuts, puncture wounds, and splinters can also have similar effects.

When caught early, infections can be treated with warm water or saline soaks and antibiotic ointment, but if you’re in serious pain, have trouble using your finger, or notice any oozing pus, see your doctor ASAP, who can drain excess fluid and prescribe oral antibiotics if needed.

5. It could be a side effect of your tough workout

During exercise, your fingers and hands might swell because the blood vessels in your body are responding to the increased energy demands on your muscles.

6…or your medication

Certain medications can also cause swelling in the fingers and hands. High blood pressure drugs, OTC pain meds, diabetes medications, steroids, and birth control pills can all cause puffiness as a general side effect.

7. Pregnancy could be messing with your body

Some swelling is typical for expectant moms. But swelling in the hands and face—especially if pressing your thumb into your skin leaves a noticeable indentation—can be a red flag for preeclampsia, a complication characterized by high blood pressure.

If preeclampsia goes untreated, it can lead to organ damage, including the liver and kidneys. In addition to swelling, signs of preeclampsia include blurry vision, high protein in your urine, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. The risk of preeclampsia is highest in pregnant women older than 40 or those having their first child. It’s also common in women carrying twins or triplets, and those who are obese.

Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed Pays First Visit to Tigray Capital since Military Offensive

0

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, has visited Mekelle, the capital of Tigray for the first time since he ordered a military offensive against the region.

The prime minister attended the first meeting of a new regional council.

He’d earlier hosted talks with the prime minister of Sudan, to where 50,000 Tigrayan refugees have fled.

A Sudanese official said Abdalla Hamdok was prepared to mediate in the conflict but a statement by Abiy made no mention of any such offer – though it said the Sudanese delegation had backed his actions in Tigray.

Reports say Hamdok has returned home early from what Ethiopia said would be a two-day trip.

South Africa’s Chief Justice Defends ‘Devil Covid-19 Vaccine’ Prayer

0

South Africa’s chief justice has said he “doesn’t care” about the backlash over his prayer against a Covid-19 vaccine “that was of the devil”.

He was filmed last week praying fervently against vaccines “meant to corrupt people’s DNA”, drawing public criticism.

But Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng over the weekend said he was not a scientist but a “prayer warrior” who was concerned about the safety of vaccines.

He said people must be free to express themselves regardless of the position they hold in society.

He was quoted as saying “I don’t care about the consequences. We’ve been quiet for far too long, toeing the line,” while questioning the imposition of a vaccine on people.
