Joe Biden wins U.S. election after record turnout

0

Democrat’s Joe Biden has won the presidency of the United States in a record turnout election.

Biden reached 290 electoral votes on Friday, after Pennsylvania and Nevada were called in his favour on Saturday. Biden won both the electoral college and the popular vote, and is the first presidential candidate in history to surpass 70 million votes.

Biden’s electoral college vote count includes Biden winning Arizona, which other major news networks had yet to declare as they await the results from about 450,000 outstanding ballots.

Trump’s loss adds his name to a short list of one-term presidents. The last incumbent president to lose his re-election bid was Republican George H. W. Bush in 1992.

The win also marks a milestone in American politics as California Senator Kamala Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, is set to become the first female U.S. vice-president.

The declaration of a winner comes after several tense days of ballot counting that saw an early Trump lead give way to Biden in a number of key swing states once mail-in ballots began to be tallied.

As electoral maps started shifting from red to blue, Trump made repeated, claims the election was being “stolen” through widespread voter fraud.

The president offered no evidence to support his accusations as he tried to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the ballot-counting process and launched multiple lawsuits in several states, including Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania. He also vowed to push for a recount in Wisconsin, where Biden was declared the winner on Wednesday.

The race was a nail-biter in large part due to an unprecedented number of mail-in ballots, many of which have taken days to count. In Pennsylvania, for example, mail-in ballots could not legally be opened and counted until election day.

The surge in mail-in ballots was driven, in large part, by the COVID-19 pandemic, which persuaded many voters to cast their votes from afar to avoid large crowds on election day. These mailed ballots largely favoured Biden after Trump had spent the months leading up to the election urging his supporters against voting by mail.

In addition to its impact on mail-in ballots, the pandemic coloured other aspects of the campaign. Biden consistently attacked Trump’s record on the crisis, accusing Trump of a failure of leadership that cost hundreds of thousands of American lives. Meanwhile, Trump accused Biden of not having a plan to handle the crisis and of wanting to shut down the entire economy to control the spread, a claim Biden repeatedly denied.

Even after Trump, his wife Melania, and numerous other members of his inner circle contracted the virus in early October, the president continued to downplay the severity of the global pandemic.

The federal government’s response to the health emergency as well as Trump’s insistence on holding large rallies for his supporters throughout the campaign drew sharp criticism from the country’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who became more outspoken in his opposition to the president’s handling of the pandemic in the latter days of the election.

Biden, conversely, shunned in-person rallies and held online and drive-in events for his supporters. He also expressed support for Fauci throughout the campaign and promised to listen to the nation’s top health experts for advice on curbing the spread of COVID-19 should he be elected.

Along with promising to “shut down the virus,” and not the the economy as Trump accused throughout the campaign, Biden campaigned on a message to “build back better.” He promised to restore decency to the White House while also prioritizing issues such as climate change and racial justice.

On the racial justice front, Biden depended on a strong turnout among Black voters in cities such as Philadelphia, Detroit, and Milwaukee, to bolster his support in key states.

While Trump has been accused of racist remarks and inflaming racial divides across the U.S., Biden has faced his own share of criticism for his past record on Black rights, including his treatment of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court confirmation hearing in 1991 and his support for a crime bill in 1994 that has been blamed for putting a generation of Black men in prison.

During the campaign, however, Biden prioritized racial justice issues, expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement and acknowledging that systemic racism exists and should be addressed.

On climate change and environmental issues, Biden and Trump offered wildly different plans for the future. Trump has described climate change as a “hoax,” and removed the U.S. from the 2015 Paris Agreement – a global pact aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to curb Earth’s rising temperatures.

Biden, on the other hand, has promised to have the U.S. rejoin the Paris Agreement in addition to reinstating Obama-era emissions rules. He has also vowed to invest in clean energy and environmental research to address what he has described as a “climate emergency.”

In addition to an expected reversal on climate policies, the shift in power will undoubtedly shake up the United States’ relationship with its closest trading partner: Canada. Trump repeatedly targeted Canada with tariffs on steel and aluminum amid negotiations on the new NAFTA.

Trump also personally attacked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him two-faced in the wake of a video of Trudeau speaking candidly to other world leaders about the president.

African Migrants In South Africa Deported Following Protests

South Africa’s government says they have started deporting 20 refugees and asylum seekers who were part of a months-long sit-in protest against xenophobia.

South Africa’s Home Affairs department said in a statement that the migrants are mostly from African countries and were demanding to be resettled outside South Africa.

Their sit-in began outside the offices of the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) in Cape Town in October 2019 with Hundreds of people taking part in the protest campaign which lasted five months.

At the time the migrants said they did not feel safe because of xenophobic attacks in South Africa’s townships, and that they were treated poorly and discriminated against.

No names or destination countries of the 20 people being deported have been mentioned but the Department of Home Affairs said it had followed due process and that the affected foreign nationals have already been transferred to Lindela Repatriation Centre for deportation purposes.

Since 2008, there have been numerous outbreaks of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals from the rest of the continent in townships across the country.

Anthony Joshua tells Tyson Fury: I’m serious about your WBC belt

0

Anthony Joshua has warned “I’m keen on getting my hands on” Tyson Fury’s WBC belt to become undisputed heavyweight champion.  IBF, WBA and WBO title holder Joshua plans two fights with Fury in 2021 with every major divisional title at stake

“It’s always been my wish,”  “Not just the WBC but competing with the toughest challenges that the heavyweight division has to offer.

Joshua and Fury hold every major belt

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury not fighting at least once in the UK would be ‘a shame’, says promoter Eddie Hearn

“That’s the only way to get better, right? You have a tough night, you go back again, you improve whether you win or lose.

“Fighting for the WBC would be an honour. It’s a prestigious belt, it’s one that I’m keen on getting my hands on.

“When the time is right, the opportunity will present itself.”

Joshua had previously responded to a tweet from former WBC champion Deontay Wilder by insisting his rival “admitted the truth” about their failure to agree a fight.

Wilder sent a tweet to Fury saying: “You know I was offered more money to fight Joshua than I was getting to fight you. Again being a man of my word, I fought you.”

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn sarcastically reacted: “I thought AJ ducked you?”

Joshua has now said: “New information has surfaced to say that we had a big interest in competing for that title.

“When the WBC talk comes around? Hopefully people understand that: ‘Joshua is serious’. Which I am.”

Joshua vs Pulev, December 12, live on Sky Sports Box Office
Pulev has beaten Chisora and Hughie Fury

Joshua must first defend his titles against Kubrat Pulev on December 12, live on Sky Sports Box Office, a week after Fury plans his UK homecoming.

Pulev has only ever lost to Wladimir Klitschko and has since beaten Derek Chisora and Hughie Fury.

“He’s not a social media famous boxer – that’s where a lot of people get their credibility in this day and age,” Joshua said.

“In terms of what he stands for? What he represents? He has been around a long time. He knows his way around the ring.

“He possesses a challenge. He wants the titles and he wants to beat me.

“That’s what he possesses – hunger and motivation. I’ve got to take away that motivation and suppress that confidence.

“That’s how you beat somebody, by breaking their soul.”

Naira continues to decline at black market despite huge dollar supply

0

At the black market where forex is traded unofficially, the Naira depreciated against the dollar to close at N465/$1 on Thursday.

Forex turnover improved significantly by 536.7% as Nigeria’s exchange rate at the NAFEX window maintained its stability against the dollar to close at N386/$1 during intra-day trading on Thursday, November 5.

Also, the naira depreciated further against the dollar, closing at N465/$1 at the parallel market on Thursday, November 5, 2020, as BDCs get another round of dollar supply from CBN.

This is also as businesses that were shut down due to the outbreak of violence in Lagos and some parts of the country during the protests against the special anti-robbery unit (SARS) and police brutality by the Nigerian youths get back to full activity.

Parallel market: According to information from Abokifx – a prominent FX tracking website, at the black market where forex is traded unofficially, the Naira depreciated against the dollar to close at N465/$1 on Thursday. This represents a N1 drop when compared to the N464/$1 that it exchanged for on Wednesday, November 4.

  • The local currency had strengthened by about 7.8% within the one week in September at the black market, as the CBN introduced some measures targeted at exporters and importers, in order to try to boost the supply of dollars in the foreign exchange market, and reduce the high demand for forex by traders.
  • The CBN has sold over $500 million to BDCs since they resumed forex sales on Monday, September 7, 2020. This was expected to inject more liquidity to the retail end of the foreign exchange market and discourage hoarding and speculation.
  • However, the exchange rate against the dollar has remained volatile after the initial gains made, following the CBN’s resumption of sales of dollars to the BDCs.
  • The President of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Aminu Gwadebe, said he expects the impact of the extra liquidity in the market to be gradual.
  • Despite the drop in speculative buying of foreign exchange, the huge demand backlog by manufacturers and foreign investors still puts pressure and creates a volatile situation in the foreign exchange market.

NAFEX: The Naira remained stable against the dollar at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window on Thursday, closing at N386/$1.

  • This was the same rate that it exchanged for on Wednesday, November 4.
  • The opening indicative rate was N385.94 to a dollar on Thursday. This represents an 11 kobo gain when compared to the N386.05 that was recorded on Wednesday.
  • The N393.51 to a dollar was the highest rate during intraday trading before it closed at N386 to a dollar. It also sold for as low as N380/$1 during intraday trading.
  • Forex turnover: Forex turnover at the Investor and Exporters (I&E) window rose sharply by 536.7% on Thursday, November 5, 2020.
  • According to the data tracked by Nairametrics from FMDQ, forex turnover rose from $23.56 million on Wednesday, November 5, 2020, to $150.02 million on Thursday, November 5, 2020.
  • The CBN is still struggling to clear the backlog of foreign exchange demand, especially by foreign investors wishing to repatriate their funds.
  • The sharp increase in dollar supply after the previous trading day’s drop reinforces the volatility of the foreign exchange market. The supply of dollars has been on a decline for months due to low oil prices and the absence of foreign capital inflow into the country.
  • As part of the measures to check forex abuse and illegal transactions, the CBN last month directed the freezing of accounts of about 38 companies.
  • The average daily forex sale for last week was about $169.93 million, which represents a huge increase from the $34.5 million that was recorded the previous week.
  • Total forex trading at the NAFEX window in the month of September was about $1.98 billion, compared to $843.97 million in August.
  • The exchange rate is still being affected by low oil prices, dollar scarcity, a backlog of forex demand, and a shaky economy that has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Huawei Appeals Against Sweden’s Ban On 5G Network Ban

0

Sweden has banned Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei and peer ZTE from its 5G network, joining other European nations in restricting Chinese suppliers on security grounds.

According to the Swedish telecoms regulator PTS on Friday, Huawei has appealed against the decision to ban the company from 5G networks.

The ban came in line with new legislation in January 2020, after examination by Swedish armed forces and security service to make sure the use of radio equipment in these bands does not cause harm to Sweden’s security.

However, Kenneth Fredriksen, Huawei’s Executive Vice President, Central East Europe, and Nordic Region said the decision taken is not good for customers nor for Sweden in general.

European governments have been tightening controls on Chinese companies building 5G networks following diplomatic pressure from Washington.

Belarus Leader Lukashenko And Son Put On EU Sanctions Blacklist

It doesn’t look too good for Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and his son who have both been officially put on the EU sanctions blacklist along with 13 other officials due to post-election crackdown.

The decision was made October 12 at a meeting of EU foreign ministers because of their responsibility for the violent repression by the state apparatus before and after the 2020 presidential elections.

The EU also held Lukashenko responsible for the exclusion of major opposition candidates in the election, arbitrary arrests and the ill-treatment of peaceful demonstrators,.

The sanctions prevent them from getting visas for the European Union as well as freeze their assets in the EU.

The EU has since rejected the results of the August 9 election stating that it does not regard Lukashenko as the legitimate president.

UN Passes Anti-Israel Resolution To Refer Temple Mount Only By Muslim Name

0

The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution, referring to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem by its Muslim name of al-Haram al-Sharif.

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, told the General Assembly that the resolution completely ignores any link between the Jewish people and the Temple Mount – the holiest site.

Calling it a disgrace, Erdan noted that the attempt to rewrite history will not change the indisputable fact that the Jewish connection to the city of Jerusalem dates back thousands of years.

The resolution is one of resolution, one of seven passed by the 138 out of the193 member Nations which all singled out Israel.

Eight countries, including Australia, Canada, Guatemala, Hungary, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and the United States, joined Israel in voting against the resolution.

Meanwhile, 16 countries abstained from voting.
