UN Chief Urges De-Escalation As Ethiopia Sends Army To Tigray Region

0

UN Chief Antonio Guterres called on Friday for the immediate de-escalation of tensions in northern Ethiopia where fighting has erupted between federal forces and troops in the Tigray region.

Long-running tensions erupted into armed conflict this week between Addis Ababa and the Tigray region, whose leaders effectively ruled the country for three decades until Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power.

“I’m deeply alarmed over the situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The stability of Ethiopia is important for the entire Horn of Africa region,” Guterres wrote on Twitter.

“I call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and a peaceful resolution to the dispute.”

Abiy, the winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, announced Wednesday that he had ordered military operations in Tigray in response to an “attack” by the region’s ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), on a military camp there.

Abiy, the winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, announced Wednesday that he had ordered military operations in Tigray in response to an “attack” by the region’s ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), on a military camp there.

The TPLF denies the attack occurred and accuses Abiy of concocting the story to justify deploying the military against the party.

The US Postal Service (USPS) said about 1,700 ballots had been identified in Pennsylvania at processing facilities during two sweeps Thursday and were in the process of being delivered to election officials.

In a court filing early Friday, USPS said about 1,070 ballots, had been found at the USPS Philadelphia Processing and Distribution Center. About 300 were found at the Pittsburgh processing center, 266 at a Lehigh Valley facility and others found at other Pennsylvania processing centers.

Ballots must be received by Friday evening in Pennsylvania in order to be counted. The vote for the US president remains extremely close and Pennsylvania is one of the states that remains undecided.

Earlier on Thursday, supporters of both US President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden held rallies in Philadelphia as election staffers slowly counted thousands of mail-in ballots that could decide Pennsylvania’s crucial 20 Electoral College votes.

ISRAEL SET TO RECEIVE NEW WARSHIP TO DEFEND GAS RIGS FROM MISSILE ATTACK

The Israeli Navy is slated next week to receive the first of four new German-made Sa’ar-6-class corvettes, stuffed to the gills with sensors, weapons and defensive systems to aid them in their task of protecting Israel’s natural gas rigs and trade routes.

As Israel tapped into the natural gas reserves located in its territorial waters just over a decade ago, the government officially designated them a strategic national asset and tasked the navy with defending them. This was no small feat for the navy, which until then was primarily concerned with protecting Israel’s coast.

The arrival of the Sa’ar-6, planned for Wednesday, is expected to significantly boost Israel’s ability to protect the country’s two operational gas rigs from missiles and other types of attacks.

UN FOURTH COMMITTEE 12 DRAFT RESOLUTIONS APPROVAL ON ISRAEL STIR REACTIONS

United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee On Wednesday narrowly approved a draft titled “Work of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories”

The Committee went on to approve — by a recorded vote of 142 in favour to 7 against (Canada, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, United States,), with 14 abstentions — a draft titled “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan”.

This move, like every other resolution has generated a lot of reactions.

On December 6 2018, a majority of UN Member States voted in favour of a General Assembly resolution put forward by the United States condemning the activities of Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza, The result of the vote was 87 in favour, 57 against and 33 abstentions, But Surprisingly, The Resolution failed to be adopted at UN Headquarters in New York.

The then General Assembly President María Fernanda Espinosa said, “Resolution A/73/L.42 failed to obtain two-thirds majority.

Speaking before the vote, Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley emphasised “the United Nations has never passed a resolution condemning Hamas. Never. Over 700 resolutions condemning Israel, and not one single resolution condemning Hamas.

The resolution condemned Hamas for “repeatedly firing rockets into Israel and for inciting violence, thereby putting civilians at risk”, and for its use of resources in Gaza to construct military infrastructure “including tunnels to infiltrate Israel and equipment to launch rockets into civilian areas”.

However, UN Watch, a Geneva-based nonprofit monitoring the UN’s alleged anti-Israel bias, released a long statement decrying the resolutions passed Wednesday. 12 Draft Resolutions On Israeli Territorial Occupation

“The UN’s assault on Israel with a torrent of one-sided resolutions is surreal,” said Hillel Neuer, the group’s executive director.

“Just two weeks after the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group assaulted Israeli civilians with a barrage of rockets from Gaza — while the UN’s General Assembly and Human Rights Council stayed silent — the world body now adds insult to injury by adopting seven lopsided resolutions, whose only purpose is to demonize the Jewish state.
