Armed attackers have fatally shot the mayor of San Mateo Piñas, marking another violent assault on public officials in Mexico.

Eyewitness accounts state that “four armed men arrived on motorcycles, stormed the village hall and opened fire on the mayor, Lilia Gema García Soto, and a local official who was in a meeting with her, Eli García Ramírez.”

Two members of the municipal police force sustained injuries during the incident.

Authorities are still working to determine why the mayor was targeted, but in Mexico, local government leaders often become targets for criminal organizations when they resist their influence.

This tragic killing makes García Soto the second sitting mayor in Oaxaca state to lose their life this year. “In May, the mayor of Santiago Amoltepec was shot dead in an ambush along with two other people who were in the car with him at the time of the attack.”

The governor of the state publicly denounced the murder and promised that justice would be served.

At present, security personnel are actively pursuing the four suspects, who managed to flee the scene after the shooting.

According to the state prosecutor’s office, federal security teams have been sent to the region to support the manhunt.

Acts of violence aimed at political leaders and electoral candidates have significantly increased across Mexico over the past few years, reaching alarming levels during last year’s national election season.

While such violent acts mostly occur in rural areas where crime syndicates hold considerable sway, “last month two top aides of the mayor of Mexico City were shot dead in the capital in an escalation of violence which shocked the country.”

A man aged 57 has been taken into custody in Minnesota under suspicion of fatally shooting a Democratic state legislator and her spouse.

The suspect was captured on Sunday evening, ending an intensive two-day search triggered by the killings of Melissa Hortman, a Democratic figure from Minnesota, and her husband, Mark. The state’s governor, Tim Walz, referred to the incident as a “politically motivated assassination”.

Authorities confirmed that Vance Luther Boelter, who was armed during his apprehension in a rural area west of Minneapolis, surrendered without resistance when confronted.

He is also believed to have opened fire on Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, both of whom survived the ordeal and are conscious in the hospital.

Mrs Hoffman remarked on Sunday that she and her husband felt “incredibly lucky to be alive” after suffering a combined total of 17 bullet wounds.

Expressing their grief, she said they were “gutted and devastated” by the tragic loss of the Hortmans, adding: “We have no words. There is never a place for this kind of political hate.”

Charges against Boelter include two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder. He is expected to appear in court in Minneapolis at 13:30 local time (14:30 EDT; 18:30 GMT) on Monday.

The accused once held a political appointment and was formerly a part of the same state workforce development board as John Hoffman, though it remains uncertain whether they had any personal connection.

Investigators have yet to reveal any motive for the killings, but State Senator Amy Klobuchar, alongside Governor Walz, has implied that political factors may have driven the attack.

On Sunday, officials announced that Boelter was captured after a vehicle he reportedly used was located in Sibley County, approximately 50 miles (80km) from where the murders took place in Brooklyn Park.

Law enforcement deployed helicopters and tactical units to secure the arrest, in what has been described as the most extensive manhunt in the state’s recent memory.

No injuries to law enforcement personnel occurred during the operation. Investigators confirmed they are not pursuing additional suspects. Earlier, Boelter’s wife was detained during a traffic stop but released after assisting authorities with their inquiries.

During a Sunday evening press briefing with other local officials, Governor Walz condemned the act as an “unspeakable act” that had “altered the state of Minnesota”.

“This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences,” Walz stated.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey applauded the law enforcement teams for their “skill and bravery” in securing the suspect, emphasizing that “Political violence is abhorrent.”

Boelter is accused of pretending to be a police officer to carry out the shootings on Saturday, subsequently exchanging gunfire with officers before escaping the suburban area.

Melissa Hortman had dedicated 20 years to serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she held the position of speaker from 2019 until 2025.

Beyond political circles, Boelter has worked as a security consultant and religious missionary with experience in Africa and the Middle East, as reflected in his online profile. Photos on social media show him preaching in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a pastor.

Investigators reportedly uncovered a list labeled “targets” inside the vehicle believed to have been used during the shootings.

Drew Evans, the head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, informed reporters that the notebook discovered in the car was not a “manifesto” because it lacked “a treatise on all kinds of ideology and writings”.

Reports indicate that the list included Governor Walz, congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison.

During the press conference, Evans declined to disclose specific names but said authorities in neighboring states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, and Iowa had been alerted to notify individuals mentioned on the list.

Mrs Hoffman provided an update on her husband’s recovery on Sunday. “John is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods,” she wrote.

The shooting spree reportedly began when the Hoffmans were attacked at their residence in Champlin around 2:00 AM local time on Saturday.

A social media post, supposedly from Mrs Hoffman’s nephew, described how she shielded her daughter during the assault, “using her body as a shield to save her life”.

Shortly after the Champlin incident, the Hortmans were killed at their home in Brooklyn Park, approximately eight miles away.

Neighbors expressed disbelief at the violence. Taha Abuisnaineh, who lives opposite the Hortmans, said he and his wife had known the family for over two decades.

“They were very nice neighbours in a very quiet neighbourhood,” he shared. “You don’t see police activity in this neighbourhood. We are very shocked.”

Another local resident recounted receiving an annual Christmas card from the Hortmans.

“What a big loss for Minnesota,” she said.

Authorities have successfully located the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) from the wreckage of the ill-fated Air India flight — a critical breakthrough in efforts to determine the reason behind last week’s fatal disaster.

The CVR, an essential device in aircraft investigations, captures all sounds inside the cockpit — including crew conversations, warning signals, and environmental noises.

The flight data recorder (FDR), responsible for storing technical flight details such as speed, altitude, and engine status, was found earlier amid the scattered debris on Friday.

These two devices together — the CVR and FDR — make up what is known as the aircraft’s “black box.” Despite the misleading name, both devices are coated in bright orange with reflective markings to aid their discovery in crash sites. They are specifically engineered to withstand extreme conditions during accidents.

The investigation into the cause of the tragedy is being spearheaded by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), with collaborative support from experts from the United States and the United Kingdom.

On Sunday, representatives from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) examined the crash location.

“The AAIB has launched a detailed investigation, and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel probe under international protocols, since the aircraft is American-made,” a statement released on Sunday said.

Reports from Indian sources indicate that personnel from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have also inspected the crash area.

Additionally, a special committee established by the Indian government is set to hold its initial meeting on Monday to discuss potential causes of the crash.

According to All India Radio, this panel plans to deliver an initial report within three months and will likely recommend updated standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent such disasters in the future.

Meanwhile, families of the victims continue to struggle with grief and uncertainty as they await closure.

Mistry Jignesh, who has been anxiously awaiting news about his niece outside the hospital, shared his frustration on Saturday. He was informed that the release of his niece’s remains might take longer than the initially promised timeframe of 72 hours, due to ongoing search and recovery efforts.

“When people are still missing, how can they complete the DNA process by tomorrow? What if my niece’s remains haven’t even been found? The wait is killing us,” he said.

US President Donald Trump has instructed federal authorities to expand operations for detaining and deporting migrants nationwide, even as demonstrations against his immigration agenda intensify.

Through a post shared on Truth Social, Trump urged government agencies to “do all in their power” to carry out “the single largest mass deportation programme in history”, specifically highlighting Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York as focus areas.

On 14 June, the “No Kings” movement organized rallies in various cities spanning from Los Angeles to New York. These events happened to coincide with a military parade held in Washington DC to celebrate 250 years of the US Army, which also marked the president’s 79th birthday.

During a “No Kings” demonstration in Salt Lake City, Utah, one person was fatally shot.

Trump has also instructed immigration authorities to prioritize action in sanctuary cities—localities that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement—a move that has heightened friction between state and federal officials during the ongoing protests.

Local leaders in these sanctuary cities continue to assert their right to safeguard undocumented immigrants.

This directive to increase deportations is in line with Trump’s campaign pledge to carry out the “largest deportation programme of criminals in the history of America”.

Surveys ahead of the 2024 election indicated broad public approval for this plan. However, since the initiative’s expansion, opposition demonstrations have become more frequent.
