NiMet Employees Strike: What It Means For Nigerians

0

Employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike, citing longstanding welfare grievances and unresolved financial issues.

Central to the dispute are allegations of “NiMet’s refusal to negotiate or implement agreed financial allowances and unresolved entitlements,” which include wage awards, peculiar allowances, and unpaid balances linked to the 2019 minimum wage.

Workers also claim that the agency’s management has been withholding critical documents, failed to address requests to include previously omitted staff in past payments, and prioritized executive retreats over vital staff training programs.

In a letter issued Monday and signed by the Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical, and Recreational Services Employees, the unions accused NiMet of failing to fulfill its commitments.

“As you are all aware, our unions have strived strenuously over the past few years to alleviate the exceedingly unjust remunerations conundrum that has visited extreme poverty and consequent untold hardship on NiMet workers,” the letter reads.

“These efforts have been largely without substantial results.”
With management allegedly ignoring the union’s demands, workers said they had no option but to begin an indefinite strike effective April 22.

“You are equally aware that the agreement between the management and our unions since 28th January 2025 towards partial amelioration of the above-stated condition has been honored largely only in the breach,” the union added.

“In the light of management’s inability to address our given grave concerns, and being that we can no longer continue to cope with present hardships (given the huge disparity in remunerations with our peers), and especially as the ultimatum given to the Management has expired, we have no choice than to resume the suspended strike.”

The union had initially issued a 14-day ultimatum to NiMet on January 22 over these unmet welfare demands. Following the strike threat, an agreement was reached and the agency had appealed for a delay in the action but the unions now say those promises were never fulfilled.

Impact Of NIMET Strike

Aviation Safety and Scheduling Disruptions

NiMet plays a key role in providing real-time weather forecasts and safety advisories for both local and international flights. The strike has already disrupted flight scheduling, causing delays and cancellations.

With the start of the strike, Nimet would be unable to provide Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF), meteorological trend forecast, meteorological and climate information data collected across 56 synoptic stations and meteorological information not disseminated according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommended practises, among others.

Increased safety risks for pilots who rely on up-to-date meteorological data for takeoff, landing, and in-flight navigation.

However, speaking on the development, Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Ado Sanusi, emphasised that it was the standard operational procedure for airlines to get weather reports for aircraft to either land or take off. He, however, could not confirm if there would be flight operations on Wednesday or not.

“It is a standard operational procedure that if there is no weather report, there is no way an aircraft can either land at an airport or take off, but I cannot confirm if there will be flight operations tomorrow or not; I can not answer that question”, he stated.

Air transport passengers at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Murtala Muhammed Airport are already jittery about what their fate will be in the coming days.

“My flight is billed for tomorrow (Wednesday); the government intervene to avert a likely disruption,” Ireti Idowu stated.

Another passenger, Isaiah Manuel, billed for a trip from Abuja to Lagos State, also expressed fears of a possible disruption to the flight.

Agricultural Setbacks

Farmers depend heavily on NiMet’s seasonal weather predictions for planning planting and harvesting cycles. The strike could lead to misinformed agricultural decisions, affecting food production.
Reduced crop yields, especially as Nigeria enters a critical planting season.

Disaster Preparedness Challenges

NiMet provides early warning systems for floods, droughts, and extreme weather events. With services halted communities are left vulnerable to natural disasters.

Government agencies may be caught off guard without timely data to coordinate emergency responses.

Economic Losses

Airlines, farmers, and logistics companies could face losses running into millions of naira due to lack of planning data.

The wider economy may also suffer as weather-sensitive industries experience interruptions.

Public Safety and Health Concerns

Weather updates are crucial for public safety, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall or heatwaves. The absence of accurate forecasts can lead to increased health risks such as heatstroke or flood-related diseases.
Travel hazards, especially in rural and flood-prone areas.

Why The Strike

LN247 spoke with a NIMET officer on the reasons for the NIMET indefinite strike and he said;

“Actually, the issue has been there for long. It has been a lingering issue, and we have written a letter to our management, and we have signed an agreement, and nothing has been done”

“If you remember when President Buhari approved thirty five thousand naira minimum wage for staff, as I was speaking to you, NIMET has not been paid. And even 2019 minimum wage, let me surprise you, even 2019, minimum wage, they are still owing federal government arrears. So, those are the demands. Currently the 2024 minimum wage has not been implemented in our agency”, he concluded.

Osimhen 30th Goal Fires Galatasaray into Turkish Cup Final

0

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen continued his remarkable scoring streak by netting his 30th goal of the season, helping Galatasaray cruise to a 5-1 victory over Konyaspor in the Turkish Cup semi-final on Tuesday.

Osimhen opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading home a pinpoint cross from former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens to give the Istanbul giants an early lead at the Konya Buyuksehir Arena.

The 25-year-old has now tallied 30 goals and six assists across all competitions this season, underscoring his status as a standout performer during his loan spell from Napoli.

Lucas Torreira doubled Galatasaray’s advantage just before halftime, and Robert Sallai added two more goals in the second half. Konyaspor managed a consolation through Pedrinho, but Yusuf Demir sealed the emphatic win with a fifth goal in stoppage time after replacing Osimhen in the 73rd minute.

Osimhen had already played a decisive role in Galatasaray’s quarter-final win over fierce rivals Fenerbahce, scoring both goals in a dramatic 2-1 win at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Despite finishing second to Konyaspor in Group C during the tournament’s group stage, Galatasaray demonstrated their dominance in the knockout rounds, with this latest win setting up a chance to lift their first Turkish Cup since 2016/17.

Currently sitting five points clear at the top of the Super Lig with six games left, Galatasaray are firmly on track for a domestic double.

Although Osimhen is expected to return to Napoli or move elsewhere this summer, he has expressed a strong desire to help Galatasaray finish the season with both league and cup titles.

FG Declares Tinubu Airport Minna as Alternative to Abuja

0

The Federal Government has now designated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport located in Minna, Niger State, as the official backup airport for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

This declaration was made by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, during the commencement ceremony of Overland Airways’ commercial flights operating out of the Minna airport.

While addressing the occasion, Keyamo pointed out the airport’s importance due to its modern infrastructure and its suitability to function as a key aviation center.

“The runway is an international runway; a 747 and a triple seven can use this runway. Why, over the years, this has been underutilised is still a puzzle,” the minister said.

He further noted that the airport aligns with global benchmarks both in design and operations, expressing his astonishment at how such a facility had remained underused for so long.

“Our eyes are on this airport. By the powers conferred on me, I declare Minna Airport as the alternative to Abuja Airport. NCAA, FAAN, take note,” Keyamo declared.

This development is anticipated to increase air travel activity in Minna and provide an essential fallback option for flights in the northern region, particularly in situations of emergency or overcrowding at the Abuja airport.

OpenAI Considers Google Chrome Acquisition

1

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has expressed potential interest in acquiring Chrome—currently the most widely used browser globally—should a situation arise where Google is compelled to sell it.

During a monopoly trial involving Google, OpenAI executive Nick Turley appeared in court representing the interests of the US government.

The US government is pushing for the dismantling of Google’s operations, claiming the tech powerhouse holds excessive control over the search engine space.

In response, Google has firmly stated that Chrome is not available for purchase and has urged the court to dismiss the antitrust case entirely.

Data from analytics firm Similarweb indicates that Chrome holds about 64% of the global browser market.

Trailing behind is Apple’s Safari, with approximately 21% user share.

Mr. Turley gave his testimony in Washington DC, where the case is being heard. This is one among several legal actions initiated by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) targeting tech giants with significant influence in areas like AI, internet searches, and social media.

In a ruling last year, the court determined that Google maintained a monopoly in the online search sector. Just recently, another judgment found the company guilty of holding an unlawful monopoly in digital advertising technology.

Google intends to challenge both rulings through the appeals process.

Lee-Anne Mulholland, who oversees regulatory issues at Google, stated in a blog post that the government’s strategies “would hurt America’s consumers, economy, and technological leadership”.

Addressing Google’s Market Power

The current proceedings aim to explore ways of limiting Google’s overwhelming presence in online search, especially at a time when the growth of generative AI tools like ChatGPT is reshaping the landscape.

These advanced AI tools now incorporate internet search capabilities to enhance accuracy and minimize false outputs—a persistent issue since the rise of chatbot technologies.

Mr. Turley also mentioned during his testimony that OpenAI had approached Google last year with a proposal to include Google search data in ChatGPT.

However, the proposal did not lead to any agreement.

“We have no partnership with Google today,” Mr Turley said.

OpenAI currently collaborates with Microsoft, the company behind Bing and the Edge browser.

At the same time, Google has rolled out its own generative AI services, including Gemini, which directly competes with ChatGPT.

The ongoing trial is scheduled to run for three weeks. Other leading tech firms such as Meta, Amazon, and Apple are expected to monitor the outcome closely, as they too face legal scrutiny from the DOJ over monopolistic practices.

In other developments, recent reports suggest OpenAI may be exploring the creation of a new social media platform.

The Verge stated the idea is “still in early stages,” though OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly been gathering private feedback regarding a potential alternative to X.

Sam Altman, who leads OpenAI, and Elon Musk, the CEO of X, were once collaborators but had a serious disagreement that led to the end of their professional relationship.

X now features its own generative AI system called Grok, which has been embedded into the platform.

Powerful 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Istanbul

0

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rocked the Sea of Marmara, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday. The quake, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 5.3. Despite the strong tremors, there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage. Many residents fled buildings in panic, and localized traffic congestion was reported, particularly in Istanbul’s densely populated Kucukcekmece district. Authorities, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, confirmed the absence of serious incidents and advised the public to stay away from buildings as a precaution.

Turkey is situated on two major fault lines and frequently experiences earthquakes. The event comes in the context of heightened seismic concerns following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes that killed over 53,000 in Turkey and 6,000 in neighboring Syria. In response to ongoing seismic risks, Turkish authorities have embarked on urban reconstruction and building reinforcement initiatives in Istanbul to mitigate potential future damage.

Experts have long warned of the potential for a significant earthquake in Istanbul. Prof. Dr. Haluk Selim noted that the North Anatolian Fault has two unbroken segments, posing a threat to the Marmara and Eastern Anatolia regions. He emphasized the importance of urban transformation projects, highlighting that buildings on the Anatolian side of Istanbul carry a risk of 40%, while those on the European side have a risk of 60%.

In anticipation of such events, the Turkish government has implemented a four-phase plan to enhance Istanbul’s preparedness for high-magnitude earthquakes. This includes ongoing urban transformation work, the determination of reserve housing areas, citizen-assisted demolition and rebuilding campaigns, and the “On-Site Transformation Project” to provide grants and financial support for reconstruction in quake-ravaged areas.

The April 23 earthquake serves as a reminder of Istanbul’s vulnerability to seismic activity and underscores the importance of continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of potential future quakes.

Student Loan Disbursements: Matters Arising

0

The recent commencement of student loan disbursements under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has sparked conversations across campuses and social platforms. While the initiative promises financial relief for many students, there are still grey areas and concerns worth exploring.

Here’s what’s bubbling beneath the surface:

Disbursement Delays & Uncertainty

Many students are still in the dark about when exactly funds will hit their accounts. While NELFUND has shared timelines, delays tied to verification processes and institutional bottlenecks have raised anxiety levels on campuses.

Eligibility Concerns

Some students feel left out. The criteria around family income, academic performance, and institutional cooperation have sparked debate over who truly qualifies — and who doesn’t.

School Participation Gap

Not all institutions are on board yet. Some schools are still finalizing backend processes, while others have not been fully integrated into the system. This has left some students confused and excluded.

Repayment Anxiety

While loans are meant to be repaid post-graduation, there’s concern over how realistic that is in today’s job market. Will repayment terms be flexible? What happens to unemployed graduates?

The Big Picture

Beyond the money, this scheme could redefine access to higher education in Nigeria — but only if the system works smoothly, transparently, and inclusively.

Earth Day 2025: What is it all about?

0

This year marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day’s inception.

It began in the United States back in 1970 and has since become a global observance, embraced by millions across different nations.

The day serves as a moment to celebrate the accomplishments of the environmental movement while also drawing attention to the ongoing need to safeguard our planet.

Earth Day is observed each year on 22 April.

What is Earth Day and how did it start?

Earth Day is an annual worldwide initiative observed on 22 April.

The very first Earth Day took place in 1970 in the US, where 20 million individuals rallied to voice their concerns over pressing environmental problems such as oil spills, contaminated waterways, and air quality issues.

Following that historic day, the US government created the Environmental Protection Agency and introduced or enhanced several laws focused on environmental protection.

In 1990, the event extended its reach globally. Organisers report that more than one billion people now participate in Earth Day events across hundreds of countries.

What is the theme for Earth Day 2025?

Each Earth Day features a unique focus.

The 2025 theme is ‘Our power, Our planet’, highlighting the importance of clean energy.

Organisers are advocating for a worldwide increase in renewable energy production—specifically, a threefold boost by the year 2030.

They’re also motivating individuals to get involved in eco-friendly efforts through activities like signing petitions and planning demonstrations.

In earlier years, Earth Day themes have revolved around issues like plastic waste and wildlife conservation.

What Does Pope Francis’s Will Say?

25

The world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully following a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible cardiac arrest. As tributes pour in from across the globe, the Vatican confirmed the details surrounding his final moments and preparations for his burial.

Cause of Death: A Sudden Cerebral Stroke

According to Vatican officials, Pope Francis suffered a cerebral stroke which left him in a coma. Despite medical efforts, the condition led to irreversible cardiac arrest. He passed away at the age of 88 at Domus Santa Marta, his residence in Vatican City.

Now Pope Francis put out a will written on his place of burial. But what does the will say?

What’s in Pope Francis’s Will?

Pope Francis has made it clear in his will that he wishes to be laid to rest in a modest grave beneath the Basilica of St Mary Major.

The document outlines that he desires to be buried “in the ground, without particular decoration” and that the only marking on his resting place should be his papal title in Latin: Franciscus.

Instead of the traditional burial site at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, which has been the final resting place for many popes before him, Francis indicated his preference to remain in Rome.

In addition to revealing the content of the will, the Vatican disclosed that the pope had passed away due to a cerebral stroke, which resulted in a coma and ultimately led to irreversible cardiac arrest.

They also noted that a donor, whose identity remains confidential, had been designated by the pope to finance the burial arrangements.

The full version of his testament was shared publicly on the official website of the Holy See. It reads:

“In the Name of the Most Holy Trinity. Amen.
“Feeling that the sunset of my earthly life is approaching and with lively hope in Eternal Life, I wish to express my testamentary will only with regard to the place of my burial.
“I have always entrusted my life and my priestly and episcopal ministry to the Mother of Our Lord, Mary Most Holy. Therefore, I ask that my mortal remains rest awaiting the day of resurrection in the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major.
“I wish that my last earthly journey conclude precisely in this ancient Marian sanctuary where I went for prayer at the beginning and end of each Apostolic journey to confidently entrust my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and thank Her for her docile and maternal care.
“I ask that my tomb be prepared in the niche of the side nave between the Pauline Chapel, Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani, and the Sforza Chapel of the aforementioned Papal Basilica as indicated in the enclosed attachment.
“The tomb must be in the earth; simple, without particular decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus.
“The expenses for the preparation of my burial will be covered by the sum of the benefactor that I have arranged, to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and of which I have provided appropriate instructions to Rolandas Makrickas (a Catholic cardinal) Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Chapter.
“May the Lord give the deserved reward to those who have loved me and will continue to pray for me. The suffering that has become present in the last part of my life I have offered to the Lord for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples.”

Plans are already underway to transport the late pope’s body from the Domus Santa Marta chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the public will be invited to pay their last respects.

World Mourns as Vatican Sets Funeral Date for Pope Francis

0

The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that Pope Francis’s funeral has been scheduled for Saturday. Leaders across the globe, including US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, have announced their plans to attend the ceremony in respect of the late Catholic head.

At the age of 88, the Argentine pope passed away on Monday after suffering a stroke. This occurred just weeks after he was discharged from the hospital where he had spent over a month being treated for severe pneumonia in both lungs.

The funeral is set for 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday and will be held in the open area in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, where large crowds are anticipated.

As per his instructions, Pope Francis will be laid in a coffin made of wood and zinc. The casket will first be placed inside the basilica before being moved to the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome for interment.

This timeline was confirmed during the initial “general congregation” of cardinals held Tuesday morning — the first formal step in the traditional process of selecting a new pope, which must be completed within three weeks.

Nigeria Has the Potential to Export Herbal Medicine Within a Year – NNMDA Boss

0

Professor Martins Emeje, the Director-General of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency, has stated that Nigeria could become an international supplier of traditional medicine products in as little as one year.

He made this known while receiving members of the House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Compliance during their visit to the agency’s office in Lagos. According to him, with the proper structure and adequate support from the government, the country’s natural medicine sector could surpass oil in economic value.

Emeje emphasized that the agency is equipped with the knowledge and capacity to produce natural remedies that meet international standards, provided they receive both the manpower and funding required.

“The next thing is for our lawmakers to put life into the resolution on natural medicine—that is, provide financial and human support. I need at least 15,000 staff to get this country to turn around, and nobody will be looking for oil money.

If they give me 15,000 staff, we will deploy 20 to each local government, and in 12 months, this country will be a net exporter of medicinal plants and natural medicines—both in their raw form, processed and standardised, and as medical products for intervention.

And people will now have what we call 100 per cent access to medicine and healthcare—universal health coverage, using our own natural medicine,” Emeje said.

In response, Hon. Badau Ahmed, who leads the Committee on Legislative Compliance, said the initiative would strengthen healthcare in the country.

He pointed out that proper execution of the plan could also cut down Nigeria’s reliance on imported drugs.

Ahmed assured the agency of the lawmakers’ readiness to assist in its mission to grow the natural medicine sector.

He explained that the initiative would not only improve public health but also open up new employment opportunities nationwide.

“This move by the NNMDA to develop and promote traditional medicine is encouraging. It will reduce costs and dependence on foreign medicine.

So, at the same time, this plan will help our teeming youths by creating job opportunities in our communities across the country.”

The motion backing this development was presented by Mr. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, who represents the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State.

While providing an overview of the motion, Ukpong-Udo pointed out that the global healthcare landscape is steadily embracing nature-based treatments.

“And this is without exception to any known human ailment.”

“Natural medicine is the most accessible and preferred healthcare delivery system in most communities in Nigeria today.

We are worried that the country could not make the necessary achievements by making traditional medicine subservient to imported medicine,” he argued.

Following the approval of the motion, the House directed the Committees on Healthcare Services and Science and Technology to collaborate with the agency and key industry players.

They were also instructed to “strategise with stakeholders and the Natural Medicine Development Agency” and to “connect the possibilities of natural medicine, reorient Nigerians, and look inwards for solutions to health challenges.”
