Tariff Hike: Labour Plans Nationwide Protest

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on February 4, 2025, against the proposed 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In a communiqué signed by its National President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC condemned the increase as insensitive and unjustifiable, warning that failure to reverse the decision could lead to a mass boycott of telecommunication services.

The resolution was reached during the NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting on January 29, where the union reaffirmed its commitment to resisting policies that further burden Nigerians.

Civil Society Groups Join the Protest

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including the Civil Society Legislative and Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), and Take It Back Movement, have pledged their support for the protest. They condemned the tariff hike, arguing that it worsens economic hardship for Nigerians already grappling with rising inflation, high fuel costs, and increased electricity tariffs.

Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC, criticized the telecom tariff increase, stating that multinational corporations and their government collaborators are exploiting Nigerians. He assured that CISLAC would support any action that reduces the financial burden on citizens.

Similarly, Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilization for the Take It Back Movement, confirmed the group’s participation, stressing that the hike should not just be reduced but completely reversed.

Labour Calls for Nationwide Mobilization

The NLC has directed all affiliates and state councils to begin full-scale mobilization for the protest. Ajaero emphasized that the demonstration would serve as a warning to the government, adding that Nigerian workers must resist policies that prioritize corporate profits over public welfare.

“The minimum wage is only N70,000, yet Nigerians are being forced to pay higher prices for fuel, food, electricity, and now telecom services. This is economic suffocation,” Ajaero stated.

He urged the Federal Government, NCC, and National Assembly to immediately suspend the tariff hike and engage stakeholders in discussions. Failure to do so, he warned, could escalate into a mass boycott of telecom services and additional nationwide actions.

Telecom Operators Push Back

Meanwhile, telecommunications companies have criticized the planned protest, arguing that they have absorbed financial pressures for years without passing the burden to consumers.

Tony Emoekpere, Chairman of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), questioned why NLC is targeting telecom operators while similar price hikes in transport, food, and energy sectors have gone unchallenged.

“When the prices of tomatoes, onions, or bread increased, did we see any protests? No one took to the streets when transport fares rose due to increasing fuel costs,” he remarked.

With tensions rising, the February 4 protest is set to be a defining moment in Nigeria’s economic landscape, as labour unions, civil society groups, and citizens push back against policies they deem oppressive.

Meta To Pay Trump $25m For Account Ban Settlement

0

Meta has reached a $25 million settlement with former U.S. President Donald Trump over a lawsuit he filed in 2021, claiming wrongful censorship by Facebook and Instagram following the U.S. Capitol riot. The agreement, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, marks a significant legal victory for Trump.

According to sources familiar with the deal, $22 million of the settlement will go toward funding Trump’s future presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees and payments to other plaintiffs involved in the case. Despite the payout, Meta has not admitted any wrongdoing regarding the suspension of Trump’s accounts.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the settlement to AFP.

Trump had previously criticized social media platforms for banning his accounts in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, insurrection, arguing that they silenced his voice. However, he has recently sought to mend ties with key tech figures, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk, both of whom attended his recent presidential inauguration in Washington.

Zuckerberg has expressed support for Trump and made policy adjustments at Meta to ease content restrictions across its platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp. Earlier this month, he announced a rollback of fact-checking operations, stating that Meta was committed to “restoring free expression on our platforms.” Reports also suggest Zuckerberg and Trump dined together at Trump’s Florida estate in November.

This settlement is part of a broader trend of media corporations preparing for a potential second Trump presidency. In December, ABC News paid a $15 million settlement to resolve a defamation lawsuit brought by Trump over comments made by a top anchor.

Meanwhile, Meta reported a strong financial performance on Wednesday, revealing a 59% surge in net income to $62.36 billion for the full year.

Why PDP Key Members Clashed At Board Of Trustees Meeting

0

Tension erupted on Wednesday, 29th of January at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat in the capital, Abuja leading to clashes, following the arrival of Sunday Ude-Okoye, the second claimant to the National Secretary position.

The Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting was ongoing with Ambassador Iliya Damagum, Acting National Chairman, and Anyanwu seated before the arrival of Ude-Okoye at exactly 12:02pm.

The moment Udu-Okoye got into the hall, Senator Adolphus Wabara, BoT Chairman, was delivering a speech.

Despite the apparent tension his sudden presence caused, Ude-Okoye remained calm as he took a seat at the far end of the high table.

Udu-Okoye waited for the BoT Chairman to finish his speech before going round to greet those on the high table, excluding his rival, Anyanwu.

Udu-Okoye was eventually forced out of the meeting by suspected thugs, which led to an altercation.

Around this time, journalists were asked to leave for a closed-door session.

As he was being removed, Udu-Okoye was seen shouting, urging his supporters to prevent his ejection.

He later made his way to the gate, protesting the injustice, as Anyanwu’s supporters were allowed into the Secretariat while his own were denied access.

It remains unclear whether Ude-Okoye was invited by the BOT Chairman, who appeared dissatisfied with the ongoing situation.

Trump’s Immigration Clampdown: What it Means for Nigerians with “Japa” Syndrome

0

US visa has taken a more strict tunnel. Applicants now have to prove, often in detail, that they aren’t intending to overstay or work illegally once they arrive. It’s no doubt that Nigeria faces significant challenges ranging from high unemployment, insecurity, political instability, and a lack of adequate infrastructure.

For many young Nigerians, leaving the country for greener pastures seems like the only option. “Japa” is seen as a solution to the frustrations of living in a country where opportunities are scarce and personal advancement feels out of reach. For so many years, the United States has been one of the most sought-after destinations for Nigerians looking to start over, whether by studying, working, or pursuing other opportunities.

But with Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, the door to America is becoming increasingly difficult to enter.

How Trump Imigration Clampdown may affect Japa Syndrome.

The US is tightening its immigration policies, making it more challenging for people from countries like Nigeria to enter and stay. While the intent behind these policies was often framed around protecting American jobs and national security, the result was a more hostile environment for those hoping to migrate.

One of the major consequences of Trump’s administration was the introduction of more stringent visa rules.
The process of securing a visa it much harder for Nigerians to navigate the visa application process, especially for non-immigrant visas like student visa.

The clampdown will extend to work-based visa. As a result, Nigerians with specialized skills or professional qualifications will find it much harder to secure work in the US, even if there is a clear demand for their expertise.

For many Nigerians already in the US, the Trump immigration policies has created an atmosphere of uncertainty. Immigrants are anxious about their visa renewals, the future of their status, and the possibility of facing deportation or being denied citizenship. For others hoping to migrate, the rules has become a roadblock to their dreams.

“Japa Syndrome”, So what Next?

While the Trump era may have introduced many roadblocks for Nigerians hoping to migrate, the future of migration remains an open question. With the new leadership in the White House, there is a possibility that some of Trump’s policies may be reversed or amended, allowing for a more favorable environment for potential immigrants.

However, even with a change in political leadership, the realities of migrating from Nigeria are unlikely to change overnight. The reasons behind the “Japa” remains economic instability, lack of opportunity, and a desire for better living conditions—are unlikely to go away anytime soon. So, while the US may not be as accessible as it once was, many Nigerians may turn to other countries, like Canada or the UK, where immigration policies are more welcoming and where there are still opportunities to start anew.

What Can Nigerians Do?

Stay Informed: Changes in immigration policies can happen quickly, so staying informed about the latest developments in US and international immigration laws is essential.

Explore Other Destinations: While the US has long been a top destination, other countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia offer more accessible pathways for skilled professionals, students, and families. With policies shifting in favor of high-skilled migrants, exploring these countries may present new opportunities.

Prepare for Longer Waits: Those still looking to migrate should be prepared for a potentially longer journey. Securing a visa might take more time and effort, and applicants will need to be patient as they navigate the evolving landscape of global immigration policies.

For many Nigerians, the dream of a better life abroad, captured in the popular “Japa” syndrome, has faced a serious setback in recent years due to the Trump administration’s immigration clampdown. The tightening of US immigration policies makes it harder for Nigerians to enter the country, whether for work, study, or family reunification.

However, the desire to seek better opportunities remains strong, and while the US may be more challenging to access, other destinations still offer hope for those determined to escape economic hardship. As policies evolve and the world changes, Nigerians will continue to find ways to build their futures—whether in America or beyond.

Court Dismisses Defamation Suit Against Farotimi

0

The Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti has dismissed the defamation lawsuit filed by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, against activist lawyer, Dele Farotimi, over allegations of cybercrime. The case, which stemmed from comments Farotimi made about his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, especially regarding Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, was formally withdrawn in court.

At the hearing, the complainant’s counsel, Samson Osobu, informed the court that a notice of discontinuance had been filed. “The matter is slated for hearing today, but we have filed a notice of discontinuance dated January 29, 2025, and filed this morning,” Osobu explained.

He cited Section 108(1)(2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 as the legal basis for the withdrawal, adding that the decision to discontinue the case was influenced by the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians and a request from Afe Babalola himself. Counsel for the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), did not object to the withdrawal.

Justice Babs Kuewumi subsequently struck out the case, stating, “This case is hereby struck out.”

After the ruling, Olumide-Fusika confirmed the case had been concluded in Ado Ekiti but refrained from commenting on other ongoing legal matters across Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti. He also advised Farotimi against discussing the issue in the media.

The withdrawal came after the intervention of prominent traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. Additionally, on Monday, Afe Babalola announced that he would direct his legal team to withdraw the defamation charges against Farotimi.

FG Prepares to Receive Deported Nigerians From United States

0

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that the Federal Government is ready to receive Nigerians who may be deported from the United States.

Speaking on Tuesday evening, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading efforts to handle the situation.

He further revealed that an inter-agency committee has been established to manage the process should mass deportations occur. The committee includes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Despite these preparations, Balogun clarified that NiDCOM has no knowledge of any immediate deportation orders against Nigerians in the US.

Recent reports indicate that about 3,690 Nigerians could face deportation following the US government’s intensified crackdown on undocumented immigrants. A document from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reviewed on Tuesday categorizes deportation cases by nationality, listing Nigeria among affected countries.

As of November 24, 2024, ICE records show that 1,445,549 non-citizens remain on the agency’s non-detained docket with final removal orders. The report also highlights Mexico and El Salvador as the most affected nations, with 252,044 and 203,822 individuals, respectively, facing deportation.

ICE, responsible for combating illegal immigration and cross-border crimes, has ramped up enforcement operations. Last Thursday, hundreds of undocumented migrants were detained, while others were deported via military aircraft as part of the US government’s mass deportation efforts.

The development raises concerns that undocumented Nigerians and other African immigrants could be the next targets of the ongoing crackdown.

Champions League: Who Will Qualify for the Knockout Stages?

0

The UEFA Champions League group stage is reaching its climax, with all 16 matches set to be played simultaneously at 20:00 GMT on Wednesday. With everything on the line, this is set to be a night of high drama.

Manchester City are in serious danger of elimination after last week’s 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Meanwhile, Liverpool have already secured qualification, Arsenal are on the verge of progressing, and Aston Villa and Celtic—who face each other—find themselves in a tight battle for survival.

This season marks the first edition of the Champions League’s revamped format, replacing the traditional four-team groups. Unlike previous years, where some final group games had little significance, every match now carries weight.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher took to social media to praise the new system, calling it “brilliant” and a welcome change from the “borefest” that previous seasons’ final matchdays sometimes became.

Who Has the Best Chance of Qualifying?

A mix of favorites and underdogs are fighting for their place in the knockout stages. Here’s a breakdown of the top contenders and their prospects:

Liverpool – The Reds have been dominant, boasting a perfect record so far. They are fully expected to continue their winning run and finish in the top eight.

Real Madrid – The Spanish giants hold a significant advantage, especially with their home fixture against Salzburg. Their qualification seems a near certainty.

Bayern Munich – Known for their attacking prowess, Bayern should have little trouble dispatching Feyenoord and securing a place in the last 16.

Arsenal – The Gunners are strong favorites against Dinamo Zagreb, making their progression highly probable.

Barcelona – Although facing a challenging test against Benfica, Barcelona’s experience and squad depth, led by Hansi Flick, give them an edge.

Manchester City – Pep Guardiola’s side faces a must-win match against PSG. Their qualification hangs in the balance, but their quality still gives them a fighting chance.

Juventus – Fresh off a victory over Man City, Juventus will look to capitalize on their momentum, especially with the home advantage against Club Brugge.

According to Opta’s advanced modeling software, teams’ qualification chances are calculated based on current form, opposition strength, and potential seedings. One notable takeaway: Celtic are given a 100% probability of finishing in the play-offs, as they are unlikely to beat Aston Villa by the necessary goal difference.

ECOWAS Maintains Open Borders for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that despite the formal withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc on Wednesday, citizens and businesses from these nations will continue to enjoy key membership benefits to uphold regional stability.

In an official statement released on January 29, 2025, ECOWAS confirmed that passports and identity cards bearing its logo will remain valid for travel within the region. Additionally, trade and economic activities will proceed under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, allowing goods and services from the three countries to move freely.

According to the statement, citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will retain visa-free access and rights to residence and establishment across ECOWAS member states.

“In the spirit of regional solidarity and in the interest of the people, as well as the ECOWAS Authority’s decision to keep its doors open, all relevant authorities within and outside the bloc are required to:

  • Recognize national passports and identity cards featuring the ECOWAS logo from citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.
  • Continue treating goods and services from these countries under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme and investment policies.
  • Maintain visa-free movement, residence, and establishment rights for citizens of the three nations in line with ECOWAS protocols.
  • Provide full support and cooperation to ECOWAS officials from these countries in carrying out their duties for the Community.”

To ensure a smooth transition and prevent disruptions affecting millions who rely on cross-border movement and trade, ECOWAS has established a special committee to negotiate future relations with the three nations.

The statement further emphasized that these arrangements will remain in effect until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities for future engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
