Suspended South Korean President Yoon Now Detained

0

Suspended South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol was detained on Wednesday for briefly imposing martial law in December.

Police officers and staff from South Korea’s anti-corruption office escorted Yoon from his residence on Wednesday morning to take him to the public prosecutor’s office in their second attempt to do so, the official Yonhap news agency reports.

The operation appeared to be peaceful despite the serious security concerns.

The agency cited the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), as saying that the detention warrant was executed at 10:33 am.

It marked the first time in the country’s history that a sitting president of South Korea had been arrested.

Yoon was seen entering the CIO headquarters for questioning.

According to Yonhap, investigators would seek a warrant to arrest the president formally within 48 hours.

“Although it is an illegal investigation, I decided to agree to appear at the CIO in order to prevent ugly bloodshed,’’ Yoon said in a recorded video message released after his arrest.”

The Constitutional Court had on Tuesday, postponed the first hearing in the impeachment proceedings against Yoon because he was not present.

The 64-year-old, through his lawyer, stated that he did not attend due to security concerns.

On Dec. 3, Yoon briefly declared martial law during a budget dispute with the opposition.

In mid-December, lawmakers removed him from office until further notice on charges of abuse of power and sedition, with the Constitutional Court currently reviewing the decision.

Yoon defended his decision by saying that he had declared martial law to protect the nation from anti-state forces, meaning his political opponents.

For the time being, the former finance minister and deputy prime minister, Choi Sang Mok is in charge of state affairs.

Equity Market Sees Largest 2025 Decline As NGX Loses N1.06trn

0

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) recorded a significant decline Tuesday as market capitalization dropped by ₦1.06 trillion, driven by selloffs in 41 stocks.

The All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 1,745.16 points, representing a 1.66% decline, to close at 103,622.09 points, while market capitalization settled at ₦63.188 trillion.

The downturn was attributed to price depreciation in major stocks, including Dangote Cement, Julius Berger, MTN Nigeria, Nigerian Exchange Group, and Ikeja Hotels.

Analysts expect mixed market sentiment to persist, with investors capitalizing on profits from previous gainers while exploring bargain opportunities.

Market sentiment, measured by market breadth, remained negative as 23 stocks gained, while 41 lost. However, analysts project mild gains in the coming sessions as bargain hunting creates room for recovery.

Trading activity saw the total volume traded rise by 1.1% to 511.157 million units, valued at ₦12.759 billion, across 13,052 deals. Shares of Guaranty Trust Holding Company led with 54.352 million shares worth ₦3.152 billion, followed by Nigerian Breweries and Universal Insurance.

The market remains poised for mixed trading sessions as investors balance profit-taking and the search for undervalued stocks.

TCN Requires N2.8trn to Execute 149 Projects— Power Minister

0

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has disclosed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, needs about N2.8 trillion to execute 149 projects to improve electricity transmission across the country.

A statement by the Ministry  said Adelabu made this disclosure in separate appearances before power sector committees in the National Assembly to defend the Ministry of Power’s 2025 budget proposal.

The Minister also disclosed that, as part of efforts to improve power supply, the Federal Government has approved the commencement of the second phase of the Siemens power project under the Presidential Power Initiative with 95 percent completion of the pilot stage in 2024.

He said: “”For the TCN alone, we will need about N2.779 trillion to enable us to execute about 149 projects we are currently engaged in all over the country. Our total budget as a ministry is not even up to this but as the saying goes that half bread is better than none.

“I’m telling you so that you can be aware of the kind of money that is needed in the ministry for us to address our electricity challenges. We need your cooperation and collaboration in achieving the mandate of Mr. President in electricity supply to Nigerians”, the Minister said.

Speaking further on the Siemens project, Adelabu said, the substations to be built across the country, would address the nation’s fragile power infrastructure, occasioned by obsolete and outdated equipment.

“The Federal Government is fully determined to address these challenges and issues that have been blocking our progress in our effort to provide electricity to Nigerians and our consumers. Of particular note is the grid collapse, which has to do with the obsolete and outdated equipment around our power stations.

“To practically address this, the Siemens project will come on board in the first quarter of this year. We have almost concluded the take off of the project and it will involve building five substations across the country. This will energise our supply so that the issue of grid collapse will be a thing of the past. By next week, we will begin the contracts for the substations to come on board”.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: How Nigeria Lost Over 5000 Soldiers in 5 Years

0

Every year, on January 15, Nigeria observes Armed Forces Remembrance Day to honor the brave men and women of the military who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. This solemn day, dedicated to the fallen soldiers, also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Nigerian Armed Forces in securing the country’s peace and stability.

The remembrance focuses on soldiers lost in combat, while also honoring those who served in peacekeeping missions and national security operations. Over the years, numerous soldiers, including high-ranking generals, have lost their lives, and this article will examine these sacrifices in detail.

The Total Number of Nigerian Soldiers Lost in Combat

Nigeria’s military has faced numerous challenges over the decades, resulting in significant losses. The nation’s military engagements have spanned from regional conflicts to international peacekeeping missions, each of which has come at a high cost.

The Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War) – 1967 to 1970

The Nigerian Civil War remains one of the deadliest conflicts in the nation’s history. It was a fight for secession led by the Eastern Region, which declared independence as Biafra. The Nigerian government, led by the military, fought to maintain national unity. It is estimated that around 100,000 soldiers from the Nigerian Armed Forces lost their lives in the Biafran War, with many more injured or permanently disabled. This war left a deep scar on the country’s military history.

The Boko Haram Insurgency – 2009 to Present

One of the most challenging conflicts faced by the Nigerian military in recent years is the ongoing fight against Boko Haram, a militant group that has terrorized the northeastern part of the country. Thousands of Nigerian soldiers have lost their lives in this prolonged struggle. Reports suggest that over 5,000 soldiers have died in combat, with many more wounded or missing. The insurgency has seen several high-profile attacks on military formations, ambushes, and suicide bombings, resulting in heavy casualties.

Other Conflicts and Peacekeeping Missions

The Nigerian military has also been involved in peacekeeping operations abroad, such as in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali, where soldiers have given their lives to maintain regional peace. The exact number of soldiers lost in these operations is not always fully documented, but estimates suggest that several hundred Nigerian peacekeepers have died while on missions in West Africa. Additionally, various national security operations aimed at combating banditry, militancy, and other criminal activities have also led to casualties.

Key Military Campaigns and Conflicts Leading to Loss of Life

Over the years, Nigeria has faced several major conflicts that have claimed the lives of many soldiers:

The Boko Haram Insurgency (2009–present)

The Boko Haram insurgency has led to severe losses within the Nigerian military. Soldiers are regularly deployed in counter-insurgency operations against the militant group. This has involved intense battles in difficult terrain, leading to many fatalities. The insurgency has also taken an emotional toll on Nigerian soldiers, who face daily attacks, including bombings, ambushes, and brutal assaults. Despite these losses, the Nigerian military has remained committed to defeating Boko Haram, though the group’s presence continues to destabilize parts of the northeastern region.

High-Ranking Generals Lost in Combat

The loss of high-ranking officers in combat operations has been especially poignant. These generals represent the leadership and sacrifice of the entire military, and their deaths often have far-reaching effects on morale and the operational direction of the armed forces.

General Murtala Mohammed (1976)

While not in active combat, the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed in 1976 stands out as a significant military loss. General Mohammed, who was Nigeria’s Head of State, was killed in an attempted coup. His death, though political rather than a combat casualty, shocked the military and the entire nation. He was seen as a transformative leader who sought to implement sweeping reforms, and his untimely death marked a pivotal moment in Nigerian military history.

General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (1966)

Another significant loss in Nigeria’s military history was that of General Aguiyi-Ironsi, the first military Head of State. General Aguiyi-Ironsi was overthrown and assassinated in a counter-coup, a tragic event that further polarized the country and marked the beginning of the Nigerian Civil War.

General Mohammed Shuwa (1990)

General Mohammed Shuwa, a prominent military officer who played a key role in the Nigerian Civil War, was also assassinated. In 1990, he was killed by unknown gunmen during an attack, marking another painful loss for the Nigerian military.

Other Senior Military Leaders in the War on Terror

In more recent times, the fight against Boko Haram has claimed the lives of several high-ranking military officers. For example, Brigadier General Murtala Mohammed was killed in a Boko Haram attack in 2015. His death was a significant blow to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and a stark reminder of the dangers faced by military leaders in the frontline.

Memorials and Tributes for Fallen Soldiers

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a time when the nation pays tribute to these fallen soldiers. Memorials, ceremonies, and wreath-laying events are held across the country to honor the bravery and sacrifices of those who died in combat. The National War Memorial in Abuja stands as a central point for remembrance, while various military formations across the country also hold events to commemorate their fallen comrades.

The Continuing Sacrifice and Need for Support

As Nigeria continues to battle security challenges both within its borders and in peacekeeping efforts abroad, the sacrifices of its military personnel remain immeasurable. Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of these sacrifices and offers a moment for the nation to reflect on the cost of freedom and peace.

It is essential for Nigerians to continue to support the families of fallen soldiers and ensure that the memories of these heroes are never forgotten. The bravery and dedication of the Nigerian Armed Forces will continue to inspire future generations, as the nation remains committed to protecting its sovereignty, peace, and security.

The sacrifices made by these soldiers should always be honored, not just on Armed Forces Remembrance Day, but every day, as their legacy remains a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of Nigeria.

CBN Fines 9 Banks N1.35bn Over ATMs Cash Scarcity

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria has sanctioned nine Deposit Money Banks with fines totaling N1.35bn for failing to ensure cash availability via Automated Teller Machines during the festive season.

Each of the banks was fined N150m following spot checks that revealed non-compliance with the apex bank’s cash distribution guidelines.

The affected banks include Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Providus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc.

The fines will be directly debited from the banks’ accounts with the CBN.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, the acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Hakama Sidi, emphasised the regulator’s commitment to ensuring seamless cash availability.

The statement read, “In a clear message of zero tolerance for cash flow disruptions, the Central Bank of Nigeria has sanctioned Deposit Money Banks for failing to make Naira notes available through automated teller machines, during the yuletide season.

“Each bank was fined N150m for non-compliance, in line with the CBN’s cash distribution guidelines, following spot checks on their branches. The enforcement action follows repeated warnings from the CBN to financial institutions to guarantee seamless cash availability, particularly during periods of high demand.

“The affected banks include Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Providus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc.”

Sidi-Ali noted that CBN will not hesitate to impose further sanctions on any institution violating its cash circulation guidelines.

The enforcement action highlights the CBN’s zero-tolerance approach towards cash flow disruptions, especially during high-demand periods. The apex bank had previously warned banks to comply with cash distribution policies.

The CBN has pledged to intensify monitoring of cash hoarding and rationing at bank branches and Point-of-Sale terminals.

The regulator is collaborating with security agencies to address illegal cash sales and ensure compliance with the daily withdrawal limit of N1.2m for POS operators.

Last September, the CBN announced plans to penalise banks failing to dispense cash via ATMs as part of efforts to ensure adequate cash circulation.

In November, the bank urged customers to report ATM and branch cash withdrawal issues starting December 1, 2024, through designated state-specific phone numbers and email addresses.

Inflation hits 34.80% in December

0

Nigeria’s Headline inflation rate climbed to 34.80% in December 2024, according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.

The headline inflation is slightly higher than the 34.60% recorded in November. The 0.20% increase was attributed to heightened demand for goods and services during the festive season.

Compared to December 2023, the NBS said the inflation rate rose by 5.87 percentage points from 28.92%, highlighting a significant year-on-year rise in price levels.

Inflation_

From the report. despite the annual increase, the month-on-month inflation rate showed a slight decrease, falling to 2.44% in December 2024 from 2.64% in November.

According to the report, the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the twelve months ending December 2024 increased by 33.24%, reflecting an 8.58 percentage point rise from the 24.66% recorded during the corresponding period in 2023.

The NBS said urban areas experienced an inflation rate of 37.29% in December 2024, marking a year-on-year increase of 6.30 percentage points from 31.00% in December 2023.

Similarly, it added that rural inflation reached 32.47% during the same period, a 5.37 percentage point rise compared to the previous year’s 27.10%.

The festive period’s high demand for goods and services drove the overall increase in prices, but the marginal month-on-month decline suggests some easing in inflationary momentum.

However, the year-on-year figures underscore the persistent economic challenges facing Nigeria, with rising living costs affecting both urban and rural households.

Analysts say the inflation trends highlight the need for robust monetary and fiscal measures to stabilise prices and address the underlying factors driving inflation in the country.

FG Strengthens Efforts To Tackle Food Export Challenges

0

The Federal Government has taken steps to address challenges in food export regulations through a partnership between the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The collaboration also aims to unlock the healthcare value chain for transformative growth.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, highlighted this development during a meeting in Abuja with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammad Pate, who led a delegation on a courtesy visit.

Accompanying the health minister was Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The session focused on resolving irregularities in food exportation, advancing healthcare initiatives, and enhancing cross-border trade regulations.

Dr. Pate emphasized the importance of tackling long-standing regulatory issues affecting food exports and healthcare advancements. “This collaboration connects two sectors that typically operate separately but have crucial overlapping interests,” he stated. Key concerns included food export regulation, NAFDAC’s role in trade facilitation, and healthcare value chain development.

Dr. Oduwole assured that both ministries would prioritize efforts to unlock healthcare opportunities and address trade bottlenecks. “We are reviewing policies around local manufacturing of syringes and needles, which align with President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda,” she noted.

Prof. Adeyeye stressed the need for effective regulation to curb international rejections of Nigerian exports, calling for a mindset shift regarding compliance standards.

Technical Aide to the Trade Ministry, Mr. Temiloluwa Oluokun, pointed out the need to denominate permit fees in Naira to protect exporters from exchange rate fluctuations and streamline certificate processing timelines.

The Director of the Federal Produce Inspectorate Service, Mr. Dafang Sule, appealed for enhanced officer training to address pesticide residue issues in sesame seed exports.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a task force dedicated to resolving the identified challenges and ensuring swift progress in key areas.

The continental football body revealed on Tuesday that the tournament will now be held in August 2025, although a specific date is yet to be confirmed.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe extended his appreciation to the presidents of the host countries: William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, for their leadership and efforts in upgrading key infrastructure such as stadiums, training grounds, hotels, and medical facilities.

EPL: Predictions For Matchday 21

0

Get ready for an intense Premier League weekend! Here’s a breakdown of the key fixtures, player insights, and bold score predictions.

Brentford vs. Manchester City

brentford has always provided a scare to Manchester City ever since they promoted. Brentford has scored first in four out of the last five encounters against City. And these matches were against an in-form city side. If we can bank on anything it is the fact that this match means a lot to Manchester City’s resurgence this season.

Brentford have lost more Premier League games having scored the first goal than any other side this season (five)
Key Players: Doku will play a very vital role in attack for Manchester City
Brentford Pair of Wissa and Mbuemo are the only attacking duo with double digits goals this season and they will be key to this fixture.

Scoreline: 1-2

West Ham United vs. Fulham

West Ham have already welcomed new manager Graham Potter with a 2-1 FA CUP defeat to Aston Villa and even more damning is the hamstring injury to Fulkru which saw him subbed off. He joins an illustrious injury list that has Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio. All hopes now fall to Danny Ings who has started only four league games since 2023.
Fulham on the other hand are on a 9 game unbeaten streak in all competitions and they have shown they can score goals this season scoring in 20 out of their last 21 matches. They will look to spoil Potter’s record of never losing his first home league game in charge of a club.

Key Players: Lucas Paquetá scored West Ham’s goal against Villa with his fourth strike in all competitions this term, three of which were his side’s opening goal of the game. In-form Raúl Jiménez has scored four goals across Fulham’s last three games, the last three of which arrived after half-time.

scoreline: 0-2

Chelsea vs. Bournemouth

Chelsea had a miserable December that they’ll like to forget and while that hunts them, they have started in similar fashion with their draw against Crystal Palace last match day. Only three points separate Chelsea and Bournemouth and a win for Andoni Iraola’s side could see them leapfrog Chelsea. Chelsea have two stats going for them though, first off 4 wins in the last 5 meetings against Bournemouth and the fact that Chelsea are unbeaten in the league when they play on a Tuesday since January 2002 with 10 wins and 4 draws.

Bournemouth on the other hand are on an impressive 9 game unbeaten run which includes ins against Man Utd and Tottenham.
Key Players: Cole Palmer has really been at the heart of Chelsea’s creativity and he’ll be key if they’re to turn things around.
Antione Semenyo has been a nightmare for defenders and if they catch Chelsea napping on a Fastbreak then expect Semenyo to be on hand to nail Chelsea’s coffin.
Scoreline: 2-2

Nottingham vs Liverpool

When Arne Slot’s Liverpool side lost to Forrest last September we all thought that was a shock result but from the way they have gone about their business this season it sure isn’t a shocker anymore, something even Slot himself admitted to on Monday.
Forest have won each of their last six Premier League games, while a win over Liverpool would equal their longest ever winning run. They are currently equal on points with hotly-tipped Arsenal. And they have registered more wins than any other team except leaders Liverpool. They now return to the City Ground, which they’ve turned into one of the most difficult places to visit recently, winning six of their last seven home games (L1), five of which came ‘to nil’.

If Liverpool play like they did against united, they may end up getting real punishment. Prior to winning this fixture 1-0 last season, Liverpool hadn’t won any of their previous 13 league matches away to Forest (D7, L6).

Key Player: Chris Wood’s stellar performance in attack this season saw him make the mid-season EPL XI. He will be crucial to Forrests hopes for a league double over Liverpool.
Mo Salah will undoubtedly be a deciding factor for the reds. His form this season has him sitting pretty atop the race for Golden boot.
Scoreline: 1-3

Everton Vs Aston Villa

David Moyes is back in the dugout for Everton for his second spell as club manager. His first spell was remarkable as he led Everton to 2009 FA Cup Final and also four European Campaigns. The new manager bounce is the only thing going for Everton right now and we can only hope it comes in handy against an Aston Villa side who are finding their form again, with just one loss in their last 5 games (W3, D1). They have also dominated the H2Hs between these two of late, avoiding defeat in each of the past 11 league meetings between the pair (W8, D3) and keeping a clean sheet on their last three visits to Goodison Park. Though Villa come into this game at the back of five successive away league defeats and without a league clean sheet on the road in 11 outings.

Key Players: Everton will look to Beto to step up with forwards Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti all potentially unavailable due to injury. His goal against Peterborough meant he’s scored in two of his past three starts for club and country.
Former Toffee Ross Barkley has lost just one of his nine H2Hs (W4, D4) against his former club, while he assisted Villa’s winning goal in September’s reverse H2H (3-2).

Scoreline: 1-2

LEICESTER VS CRYSTAL PALACE

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will hope that a 6-2 FA Cup win over second-tier QPR injects some confidence into his dressing room as the Foxes look to stave off an immediate return to the Championship. That victory came on the back of a five-match losing streak in the Premier League to leave them two points adrift of safety. Crystal Palace also enjoyed a winning outing in the FA Cup third round, though they were made to work much harder for their victory as they squeezed past third-tier Stockport 1-0 at Selhurst Park. That result at least extended their unbeaten run to four matches across all competitions (W2, D2) as manager Oliver Glasner looks to move his side further away from the relegation zone.

Key Players: Buonanotte will be key to the midfield battle in this game which will go a long way to determine who gets the lion share of possession and hopefully convert that spell into goals.
Jean-Philippe Mateta for Crystal is starting to find consistency to his form and he enjoys playing against Leicester and scoring against them with 3 career goals against leceister being his second most against any club.

scoreline: 1-1

Newcastle vs Wolves

Newcastle return to league action looking to continue their scintillating run of form. Five of their current run of eight straight wins came in the league and represent as many victories as they had put together across the opening 15 rounds (W5, D5, L5), meaning that the top-four hopefuls can now post a sixth straight league win for the first time since 2022.
Alexander Isak won the player of the month for December and he has been backing all that up with scintillating performances. He didn’t feature in Newcastle FA cup tie to ive him enough time to rest for Wolves.
Wolves on the other hand just completed the signing of Emmanuel Agbadou to bolster their defence line. While the return of Matheus Cunha will be very much welcomed by new boss Vitor Pereira whos racing against time to save Wolverhampton Wanderers from relegation.

Key Player: Isak for obvious reason, will be very key to Eddie Howe side’s success.
Matheus Cunha on the other hand will be cementing his claim as the creative spark in attack for Wolves if they’re to win this one considering their recent results.

Scoreline: 4-2

Arsenal vs Tottenham

The 211th installment of the North London derby is another vital opportunity to remain within striking distance of league leaders Liverpool whilst also heaping more misery on fierce rivals Tottenham. The 16-point gap between the two sides is just as compelling as recent head-to-head history, which has seen Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta win six of his last eight clashes with Spurs (D1, L1). Arsenal remain the only Premier League club yet to lose at home this season (W6, D3). Arsenal well placed to continue an unbeaten run at home to Spurs in this competition that spans more than one decade (W8, D5), especially as they already have the psychological advantage of winning the reverse fixture 1-0.

Tottenham continue to at least attempt to pursue success in every competition, illustrated by their wins in both the EFL and FA Cups since losing 2-1 at home to Newcastle in their last Premier League outing. Things are beginning to look a little more positive for manager Ange Postecoglou, who is hopeful that Richarlison will make his long awaited return here despite the boss’ intent to “be really careful” with his recovery.

Key Players: Odegaard is the sole source of creativity for Arsenal and this fixture will rely on him largely if Arsenal’s set piece routine fails to bail them out.
Kulusevski has been the standout Spurs player for me this season and he will be largely called upon to inject his infectious energy into the team in the hopes of saving Ange’s job.
