The announcement, made on Thursday via X, recognizes Lookman as one of football’s top talents. The Nigerian winger, who finished 14th in this year’s Ballon d’Or rankings, is the second African nominee, joining Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool forward.

Lookman’s inclusion follows in the footsteps of his compatriot, Victor Osimhen, who made the final shortlist for the award last year. Galatasaray Secures Sponsor for Victor Osimhen Transfer Amid Rival Interest

0

Galatasaray’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen from Napoli is gaining momentum after the Turkish champions secured a sponsor to cover 70% of the transfer fee. According to Turkish outlet Milliyet, the club is negotiating a reduction in the €75 million fee to €70 million due to prior payments made. After discussions with two major Turkish companies, one agreed to cover the bulk of the transfer cost, leaving Galatasaray to pay just 30%.

Napoli has requested €25 million upfront, with the remaining balance to be paid in two installments. As a result, Galatasaray is actively exploring financial solutions to finalize the deal.

The Turkish side moved quickly after rival Fenerbahçe expressed interest in Osimhen through their coach, José Mourinho. While initially reassured when Osimhen stated, “I am very happy here,” Fenerbahçe is now seeking ways to convince Napoli to part with the Nigerian striker. They have also engaged agent Mirsad Türkcan, who has been negotiating with sponsors and received a positive response.

Fenerbahçe, despite not meeting directly with Osimhen, hopes to leverage the club’s strong relationship with Napoli from previous transfers, including Eljif Elmas, to secure the deal. The competition for Osimhen’s signature is fierce, with both clubs aware of the substantial investment required. The striker, who currently earns €12 million annually, is expected to receive €36 million over three years if transferred.

Galatasaray’s president, Dursun Özbek, is leading the charge to bring Osimhen to the club with a dedicated team, including Kavukcu and Buruk. They plan to meet with Osimhen’s agent, George Gardi, in Italy to discuss the next steps.

Osimhen has made a significant impact since joining Galatasaray in September, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in just nine matches across all competitions.

0

As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification battle intensifies, 15 teams have already secured their spots in the tournament, with 24 teams set to participate. The road to the finals in Morocco, which will take place from December 2025 to January 2026, is rapidly narrowing, and the race for the remaining nine spots is heating up.

Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and runners-up Nigeria have both confirmed their qualifications in their respective groups. Other teams, including South Africa, Tunisia, and Uganda, also secured their places on Thursday, some benefiting from results in other matches.

Tunisia sealed their spot with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar, thanks to Ali El Abdi’s last-minute header, marking their 18th consecutive AFCON appearance. Meanwhile, Gabon qualified from Group B without even playing, as their closest rival, the Central African Republic, lost 1-0 to Lesotho. South Africa and Uganda also advanced without action, as Congo’s 3-2 defeat to South Sudan ensured they finished in the top two of Group K.

For Nigeria, a 1-0 win by Libya over Rwanda earlier in the day confirmed their top-two finish in Group D. Later, the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Benin, with Victor Osimhen’s late header saving Nigeria from a defeat.

In other developments, Ghana’s hopes of qualification were reignited following Sudan’s heavy 4-0 loss to Niger, which sets up a dramatic conclusion in Group F. Ghana must win their remaining two fixtures and rely on Sudan’s slip-up in their final match against Angola.

Meanwhile, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea, already qualified from Group E, played out a goalless draw in Malabo, with Algeria dropping their first points of the campaign.

So far, the following teams have secured their spots for AFCON 2025:

  • Morocco (Host, automatic qualification)
  • Burkina Faso (Group L)
  • Cameroon (Group J)
  • Algeria (Group E, leader)
  • DR Congo (Group H)
  • Senegal (Group L)
  • Egypt (Group C)
  • Angola (Group F, leader)
  • Equatorial Guinea (Group E)
  • Côte d’Ivoire (Group G)
  • Gabon (Group B)
  • Uganda (Group K)
  • South Africa (Group K)
  • Tunisia (Group A)
  • Nigeria (Group D)

With Friday’s qualifiers featuring 10 crucial matches across Africa, the battle for the final spots at AFCON 2025 continues. Teams like Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are in prime position to qualify with home victories, while others will fight to keep their dreams alive.

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Tops Group D with Draw Against Benin

0

Nigeria secured the top position in Group D of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification series after a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic on Thursday at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan, netted an 81st-minute header to equalize for Nigeria after the host team had taken the lead in the first half with a header of their own. This draw ensured Nigeria finished with an uncatchable 11 points in the group, having already qualified for the tournament in Morocco after Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda earlier on Thursday.

Nigeria had not conceded a goal until their encounter with Benin, but they were breached in the 16th minute when Mohamed Tijani scored for the hosts, heading in from a well-executed corner kick past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Osimhen had a chance to equalize before halftime but missed a header from a Bruno Onyemaechi cross. Despite their struggles, Nigeria managed to equalize in the second half thanks to Osimhen’s header, which was more challenging than the earlier miss.

Though it wasn’t a flawless performance, Nigeria’s point was enough to guarantee them the top spot in Group D. Benin Republic remains second with seven points, while Rwanda and Libya battle for the final qualification spot with five and four points, respectively.

In their final match, Nigeria will play for pride against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Monday. Benin will face Libya in the other crucial encounter as the battle for the final qualification spot intensifies.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced a substantial deployment of troops to support the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring a peaceful and orderly governorship election in Ondo State on November 16, 2024.

In a statement released on Thursday, Major General Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized that the presence of troops is intended to secure the election process, allowing citizens to vote freely without fear of intimidation. He added, “The deployment of troops is to ensure the safety of voters, prevent any form of harassment, and keep potential disruptors in check.” The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is also contributing by airlifting essential electoral materials to aid the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

General Edward also provided updates on various military operations across the northern regions, reporting that 88 terrorists were neutralized, and 228 suspects were detained in recent efforts to dismantle terrorist groups. “Our intensified operations in the North West and other areas aim to trap and dismantle terrorist networks across the country,” he stated.

Additionally, in the South-South region, troops disrupted oil theft activities, seizing stolen crude oil worth approximately N1 billion. They uncovered and destroyed 13 illegal refining ovens, 20 pits, 73 boats, 25 storage tanks, and 59 illicit refining sites. Other recovered items included three barges, seven speedboats, and over 940,000 liters of stolen crude oil.

During these operations, troops recovered 84 assorted weapons and more than 2,390 rounds of ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, Dane guns, revolver pistols, and various other arms, along with communication devices, vehicles, and motorcycles.

AFCON 2025: Troost-Ekong Confident Ahead of Benin Republic Clash

0

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong expressed confidence ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic, a match pivotal for securing Nigeria’s spot in the tournament in Morocco next year.

Nigeria has accumulated seven points in its last four games under coach Augustine Eguavoen, with three victories and one draw, including a win against Benin Republic in the first leg. Now, they are set to face Benin Republic again in the decisive second leg.

In a pre-game press conference, Troost-Ekong highlighted the team’s positive experiences at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, saying, “The last time we played Benin was in October, and we won at home. We know Benin is a strong team, and Gernot Rohr, who coached our national team for over five years, knows our style well.”

He added, “It’s going to be a challenging game. But here, especially in this stadium, we have fantastic memories from earlier this year. We’re feeling at home in Abidjan and fully prepared to win and secure our qualification tomorrow.”

Troost-Ekong believes that Nigeria’s confidence will be boosted by the familiarity of the Abidjan pitch, as they aim for a fourth victory in the qualifiers. However, Coach Eguavoen has reminded the Super Eagles to stay focused and avoid complacency against Benin.

GWR Confirms Nigerian Doctor’s World Record for Largest Drawing

0

Dr. Fola David-Tolaram, a Nigerian doctor and artist, has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting the Guinness World Record for the largest drawing created by an individual. Guinness World Records confirmed his accomplishment on Thursday.

The stunning artwork, which measures 1,004.7 m² (10,814.5 ft²)—about the size of 3.8 tennis courts—was crafted on the pitch at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. It stands as a tribute to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

David-Tolaram, 31, explained that his creation, titled The Unity of Diversity, is a symbolic map of Nigeria celebrating the nation’s many cultures. “Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation,” he said. “I wanted to create something that speaks to that and give people an avenue to celebrate their cultures.” The artwork features elements of Nigerian life, including food, clothing, festivals, and music, showcasing the beauty of the country’s varied traditions.

Before starting the record-breaking piece, David-Tolaram traveled across Nigeria to experience its different cultures firsthand, bringing these inspirations to his massive canvas. The project took six days to complete on a 1,360 m² canvas, using waterproof markers. Assembly of the canvases alone required two days.

Initially, he planned to work from the center outward in a circular pattern but adjusted his technique as the project progressed. Reflecting on the challenge, he recalled his initial hesitation, saying, “I remember standing in the center of this canvas, feeling apprehensive. For five minutes, I stood there preparing myself mentally.” Once he began, his confidence grew, saying, “The moment my marker touched the canvas, there was no going back.”

Throughout the project, spectators gathered in the 5,000-seat stadium to watch and support him. David-Tolaram described the atmosphere as “electrifying.” Now a Guinness World Record holder, he shared his pride and excitement, saying, “I grew up reading about world records and never imagined I would hold one. This accomplishment is truly an honor.”

Senegal Heads to the Polls Amid Economic Crisis and Political Tension

0

Senegal is set to hold legislative elections on Sunday, a pivotal vote that will shape the new president and government’s ability to secure a majority in the National Assembly and advance their reform agenda. These elections come with high stakes, heightening the potential for unrest after a recent period of calm, and following intense clashes leading up to the presidential election in March.

The heated campaign period has coincided with a deepening fiscal crisis that poses a significant challenge for the new government, potentially hindering its pledges to revitalize the economy and create jobs. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, known for his outspoken style, claimed this week that his supporters were under attack and called on them to “take revenge,” while cautioning that their restraint should not be mistaken for weakness.

“Let no one think we have changed to the point where anyone can act as they wish,” Sonko stated. “We had the power to act, but we chose restraint.”

For Senegalese voters, priorities remain focused on job creation and economic relief, as inflation continues to impact daily life and a burgeoning youth population seeks employment. On election day, more than seven million registered voters will choose from 41 parties and entities vying for 165 parliamentary seats, with polling stations open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

“We need affordable essentials—water, electricity, and transport—so we can live decently,” expressed Cheikh Diagne, a street vendor in Dakar.

Historically, Senegalese voters have tended to support the president’s party in legislative elections, noted Babacar Ndiaye, research director at the think tank WATHI. “When they elect a president, they usually grant them a legislative majority,” he observed.

Senegal’s looming debt crisis further amplifies the stakes, as the new administration recently revealed a much larger budget deficit than previously reported. As a result, a $1.9 billion IMF program is currently paused pending audit reviews. The ruling Pastef party faces significant opposition, with an unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the APR, led by former Prime Minister Macky Sall. Additionally, a coalition led by Dakar’s mayor, Barthelemy Dias, has clashed with Pastef supporters.

Mariam Wane Ly, a former parliamentarian and trailblazing figure for women in Senegalese politics, sees this election as an opportunity for parties to clarify their visions, expressing confidence in Pastef’s potential to secure a majority. “I believe this will help address much of the public discontent,” she said.
