Opposition Wins by a Landslide in Mauritius Election

0

In a major rejection of the current government, Mauritius’ opposition coalition has won the country’s election by a landslide, taking all seats in the country’s parliament.

Throughout Monday, the results released at various constituencies across the country showed that the governing coalition led by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth failed to get any of the 62 seats available for voters to directly decide on.

Before the final results announcement, Jagnauth conceded defeat saying his Militant Socialist Movement coalition was headed for a huge defeat as it became clear that the opposition was winning in all of the country’s 21 constituencies.

Navin Ramgoolam will return as the country’s prime minister after the Alliance for Change coalition’s victory. Navin served as prime minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014.

Jugnauth had been seeking another five-year term in the Indian Ocean island nation, after being in office since 2017 but his government faced corruption allegations after recordings of politicians and business people were leaked online.

“The population has decided to choose another team. I wish good luck to the country,” Jugnauth said on Monday.

Official results that will include two seats from Rodrigues Island are expected to be released Tuesday, but the opposition has already won all 60 seats that have been announced.

The Electoral Supervisory Council will nominate another eight lawmakers to make it a total of 70 parliamentary seats.

On Sunday, at least 1 million people were registered to vote in the 12th election since Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.

Mauritius, which sits about 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) off Africa’s east coast, is recognized as one of the continent’s most stable democracies and has developed a successful economy underpinned by its finance, tourism, and agricultural sectors since gaining independence.

Archaeologists Uncover Surprising Discoveries at Ancient Egyptian Church

0

A team of archaeologists has made a remarkable discovery at an ancient Egyptian church site, shedding new light on early Christian practices. During an excavation of the ancient city of Trimithis, also called Amheida, located near the Dakhla Oasis in Egypt’s western desert, researchers unearthed the remains of a mid-fourth-century church. The find includes 17 human burials, revealing unique insights about the individuals laid to rest there.

The excavation, led by New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, resumed in 2023 after a seven-year pause, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The site of Trimithis, once a Roman-era settlement from 30 B.C. until the Muslim conquest in 641 A.D., has been the focus of ongoing research exploring ancient buildings, inscriptions, and public facilities, such as bathhouses. The church, however, has proven to be among the most fascinating discoveries.

David Ratzan, Project Director and head of the ISAW library, emphasized the significance of the church’s design, which aligns with Roman basilica-style architecture. This public building style, originally used for administration and law, became associated with worship as Christians gained more freedom to gather openly under the rule of Emperor Constantine. “It’s striking to see Christians in this early period embracing such public spaces,” Ratzan noted.

What truly surprised researchers, though, was the finding of 17 bodies within the church’s walls. Twelve of these remains were interred beneath what would have been the altar and adjacent service rooms, known as the pastophoria. Among the remains, seven were identified as female, and eight were children or adolescents, including infants—a surprising concentration in the context of Roman Egypt’s patriarchal society.

“Although women played key roles in early Christianity, it was unexpected to find so many women and young individuals buried here,” Ratzan commented. This finding has raised questions about whether the deceased were related to the church clergy or benefactors of the Christian community in Trimithis.

The excavation team is now focused on understanding the relationships and roles of those buried. “Are these burials typical of other churches from this period, or unique to the oasis setting?” Ratzan mused. Currently, DNA analysis remains on hold, as additional church sites in Trimithis may yet hold clues.

Ratzan expressed excitement about the impact of this discovery on early Christian studies, noting, “This find has significant implications for the history of early Christianity, and we’re preparing a volume on the smaller artifacts and forensic study of the remains.”

INEC announced on its X (formerly Twitter) handle: “Sensitive materials for the Ondo State Governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024, have arrived in Akure and have been received by Central Bank of Nigeria officials.”

In a parallel effort to ensure a credible election, the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retired), hosted a pre-election dialogue. The event, organized by the Kukah Centre and supported by the European Union, brought together key stakeholders, including senior security officials, community leaders, religious figures, media representatives, civil society organizations, and political party candidates.

Discussions during the session focused on promoting adherence to the Ondo State Peace Accord, increasing collaboration among security agencies, and reducing vote-buying and electoral malpractice. Stakeholders also addressed the need to counter misinformation during and after the election.

Anthony Joshua Surpasses $200 Million in Career Earnings

0

Anthony Joshua has now exceeded $200 million in career earnings, establishing himself as one of boxing’s top earners and surpassing heavyweight rival Tyson Fury and rising star Gervonta Davis.

The former two-time heavyweight champion brought in $75 million from his fights in 2024 alone, ranking him second in yearly earnings, just behind Canelo Alvarez. While Alvarez’s in-ring earnings matched Joshua’s, he edged out the British star by $2 million in non-fight revenue.

In 2024, Fury, 36, added $50 million to his total, bringing his career earnings to $150 million—still considerably behind Joshua’s impressive total.

Meanwhile, Davis, 30, has accumulated $50 million since his pro debut, with recent bouts against Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin contributing nearly $20 million to his income. Garcia himself has emerged as a pay-per-view sensation, amassing over $40 million in his career so far.

Joshua’s financial rise gained momentum after his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr. in Saudi Arabia, where he earned $65 million. His next two fights with Oleksandr Usyk added another $40 million to his total earnings.

The Watford-born star further boosted his fortune with a $50 million payday from his high-profile showdown against Francis Ngannou last year. Additional big-money fights include $12 million purses for bouts with Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, as well as substantial earnings from six sell-out events at Wembley and Principality Stadium.

Currently recovering from injuries sustained in his recent loss to Daniel Dubois, the 35-year-old Joshua is eyeing a potential future clash with Fury. The two-time champion is awaiting the outcome of the upcoming Usyk vs. Fury rematch before planning his next steps.

With one fight left on his Riyadh Season contract, it’s anticipated that His Excellency Turki Alalshikh will offer a substantial sum to set up an all-British showdown, should the opportunity arise.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently confirmed that Joshua won’t return to the ring until at least May 2024, ruling out an immediate rematch with current IBF world heavyweight champion Dubois.

“We have one final chapter in his career that we need to get 100% right,” Hearn shared with Boxing News. “When he comes back in May or June, or whenever it may be, he has to be physically and mentally 100% prepared.”

Obaseki Hands Over to Okpebholo, Pardons 10 Inmates

0

Edo State’s outgoing Governor, Godwin Obaseki, will officially hand over power to incoming Governor Monday Okpebholo today, concluding his tenure. On the eve of his departure, Obaseki granted a pardon to 10 inmates with less than a year remaining on their sentences in various correctional facilities across the state.

The list of pardoned inmates includes Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah. The clemency was granted upon the recommendation of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by Justice P.O. Isibor (retd.), and was endorsed by Obaseki’s Office of the Special Adviser, Media, headed by Crusoe Osagie.

Okpebholo’s succession follows his victory in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, where he defeated his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party.

Today’s inauguration ceremony for Okpebholo will be held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, marking his official start as the fifth governor of Edo State since the Fourth Republic began in 1999. Dignitaries from across the country, including all APC governors, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, are expected to attend the event in support of Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa.

The city’s streets, especially near the stadium and Airport Road, have been spruced up for the occasion, with supporters and high-ranking party members arriving in Benin as early as Monday.

However, Obaseki, who noted he was not formally invited to the ceremony, is expected to skip the event. A member of the inauguration committee remarked that the occasion will proceed regardless of Obaseki’s attendance.

NNPCL Stops Fuel Imports, Buys From Dangote Refinery

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has officially ended its reliance on imported petroleum products, now sourcing refined fuel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other domestic refineries. This strategic shift was highlighted by NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, during the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists’ (NAPE) annual conference in Lagos, themed Resolving the Nigerian Energy Trilemma: Energy Security, Sustainable Growth, and Affordability.

This transition comes as some independent petroleum marketers indicate plans to import fuel at prices lower than those of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery. In August, President Bola Tinubu stated that Nigeria was spending around N2 trillion monthly on fuel imports, totaling an annual expenditure of N24 trillion. He highlighted that the introduction of compressed natural gas could save the country a significant portion of these funds, redirecting resources to healthcare and education.

Historically, despite being an oil-rich nation, Nigeria has imported much of its fuel due to insufficient refining capacity. Kyari confirmed that NNPC now sources its products exclusively from local refineries, ending its fuel importation activities. Previously, NNPC held exclusive off-taker rights for fuel from the Dangote refinery, though the government recently permitted other marketers to lift directly from the facility.

Kyari addressed speculations that NNPC was undermining the Dangote refinery by withholding support, emphasizing NNPC’s commitment to supplying crude oil to domestic refineries, including Dangote. He highlighted Nigeria’s “Lamborghini crude,” known for its high quality, as a premium product that commands higher prices globally but suggested a balanced approach to refining domestically to maximize value while considering cost implications.

He also clarified that NNPC is open to selling crude to domestic refineries in naira, contrary to claims that it aimed to hinder the Dangote refinery’s operations. Kyari explained that selling in naira could stabilize foreign exchange pressures by reducing the need for FX in petroleum imports.

Kyari further stressed the importance of energy security, noting that a significant portion of Nigeria’s population lacks access to electricity and clean fuel. He assured that NNPC remains committed to addressing these gaps by supporting energy availability in the domestic market.

Opposition Leader Leads Polls in Ghana’s Presidential Race

0

According to new polls released Monday, Ghana’s main opposition leader and former president, John Dramani Mahama, is leading the race to win the upcoming presidential election in December. Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress, is running against Vice-President Muhamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

A total of 13 candidates are vying to succeed outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who will step down in January after completing the maximum two terms. Facing Ghana’s most severe economic crisis in decades, both Mahama and Bawumia are centering their campaigns on pledges to revive the economy and enhance citizens’ well-being.

In 2022, Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, defaulted on most of its $30 billion external debt due to years of high borrowing. Notably, no political party in Ghana’s democratic history has won more than two consecutive terms.
