Positioning itself as a global leader in digital reform, Australia aims to implement one of the strictest social media age restrictions worldwide. “This is for parents everywhere. Social media is harming our kids, and it’s time to step up,” Albanese declared in a statement outside parliament.
The new legislation will first be reviewed by state and territory leaders before being introduced to parliament in late November. If approved, platforms would have one year to establish compliance measures. Albanese emphasized that the responsibility would rest solely on tech companies, not on parents or young users, to prevent underage access to these platforms.
Meta, Facebook, and Instagram’s parent company expressed a willingness to comply with any age restrictions the government may enforce. However, Meta’s head of safety, Antigone Davis, cautioned that such restrictions should be carefully crafted to avoid unintentional negative impacts on teens and their families.
Similarly, DIGI, an industry association, warned that banning access could limit teenagers’ ability to receive mental health support. A spokesperson for DIGI compared the proposal to banning swimming at beaches due to risk, instead of teaching water safety.
The recent passing of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, has left a notable void in the country’s military and national defense landscape. Known for his dedication to Nigeria’s security and his resolute leadership, Lagbaja played an instrumental role in confronting Nigeria’s complex security issues. His sudden death has been a profound loss to the Nigerian Army and the nation at large. This article looks into his life, career, contributions, and the legacy he leaves behind.
Early Life and Background
Lieutenant General Lagbaja was born and raised in Irepodun, Osun State. Growing up in a family that valued hard work and discipline, he displayed early signs of leadership and determination. His academic journey set the foundation for his future career in the military, and he soon joined the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he honed the skills and discipline that would later define his life and career. His commitment to service and his unyielding sense of duty were apparent even in his formative years, setting him on a path toward becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected military leaders.
Military Career and Key Roles
Lagbaja’s military career officially began in 1987 when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Throughout his nearly three-decade-long service, he rose steadily through the ranks, gaining valuable experience across a variety of combat and operational roles. His early years included participation in peacekeeping missions across Africa, particularly in the West African region, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to regional stability and international collaboration.
Over time, he became known for his strategic acumen, and his leadership was instrumental in counter-insurgency operations within Nigeria. His work in the northeastern and northwestern parts of Nigeria, particularly against Boko Haram and other insurgent groups, gained him widespread respect within the military. His approach combined tactical planning with a deep empathy for the troops under his command, inspiring loyalty and resilience among the men and women he led.
Appointment as Chief of Army Staff
In June 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff in recognition of his distinguished service and strategic leadership abilities. The appointment came at a critical time, as Nigeria faced escalating security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts. Lagbaja’s role demanded swift action, and he responded by initiating key reforms aimed at modernizing the army and improving operational efficiency.
One of his primary initiatives as Chief of Army Staff was the establishment of an aviation wing within the Nigerian Army, an innovation intended to enhance response times and logistical support in conflict zones. He also focused on troop welfare and maintained close ties with frontline soldiers, frequently visiting them to boost morale and offer direct support. His emphasis on professionalism, integrity, and responsiveness set the tone for his leadership, reflecting his vision for a stronger, more capable Nigerian Army.
Achievements and Legacy
Despite his brief tenure as Chief of Army Staff, Lagbaja made notable strides that have left a lasting impact on the military. Under his leadership, the army introduced several key initiatives aimed at addressing immediate security threats while also building a more resilient and adaptive force. He worked on improving military coordination, expanding the army’s strategic capabilities, and enhancing its logistical frameworks to meet Nigeria’s growing security demands.
Lagbaja’s legacy is also reflected in his leadership style. He was a principled leader, admired for his courage and integrity. His commitment to the well-being of his troops and his unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s sovereignty earned him a place of honor within the military. His work has strengthened Nigeria’s defense framework and inspired many in the military to uphold the values he championed: duty, courage, and patriotism.
Tributes and Reflections from the Nation
Following his death, tributes poured in from across Nigeria, underscoring the significant impact he had on the nation. President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow, noting Lagbaja’s courage and the void his absence would create. Senate Deputy President Jibrin Barau, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Minister of Defense Abubakar Badaru also shared their condolences, emphasizing his contributions to Nigeria’s defense and his dedication to national security.
Many Nigerians, both within the armed forces and the general public, expressed their sadness and appreciation for Lagbaja’s service. His life and career are seen as emblematic of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military, and his legacy is expected to inspire future generations of Nigerian soldiers.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja’s life was a testament to the dedication, valor, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s security. His leadership and vision continue to resonate within the Nigerian Army and across the country. His achievements, marked by strategic innovations and a genuine concern for his troops, reflect a legacy that will endure in Nigeria’s military history. As the nation mourns his passing, Lagbaja’s contributions serve as a reminder of the courage and resilience required to face the challenges of securing a nation. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he served and inspired.
The Federal Government has attributed the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid to a poor maintenance culture, aging infrastructure, and inadequate equipment, alongside other challenges. The government highlighted that these issues have led to multiple power outages, most recently on October 14 and 19, 2024, when high voltage levels exceeded equipment capacity and triggered nationwide blackouts.
Nafisatu Asabe Ali, Chair of the investigative committee assessing the grid failures, shared these findings at a report presentation at the ministry headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. The briefing followed yet another grid collapse on Tuesday, marking the tenth occurrence this year alone. Ali disclosed that the investigation team observed recurring issues across all stations involved in the power grid.
The report detailed the October incidents, linking them to lightning arrestor failures at the Jebba and Oshogbo transmission stations, and a current transformer explosion at Jebba. According to Ali, “The high voltage in Jebba—caused by the unavailability of a second reactor—caused lightning arrestors to shatter and resulted in multiple tripping of 330kV lines, eventually leading to a full grid collapse.”
Ali further explained that the aged infrastructure contributes significantly to these issues. For example, some equipment in Jebba, commissioned in 1968, remains in operation without sufficient maintenance, compromising the stability of the entire system.
The committee also cited factors such as vandalism, inadequate coordination of maintenance schedules, and limited technical capacity as contributing issues. In response, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu announced that the ministry would seek additional funds through the 2024 Supplementary Budget and the 2025 Appropriation Bill to address these critical infrastructure needs.
Adelabu voiced optimism that implementing the committee’s recommendations, which include regular equipment audits, maintenance improvements, installation of harmonics filters by distribution and generation companies, decentralization of TCN’s central store, and enforcing Free Governor Mode of Operation, will stabilize the grid and reduce the frequency of collapses. He emphasized that the reforms are essential to ensure the reliability of Nigeria’s power sector.
Muhammed Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare has announced that N45bn has been disbursed through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to Primary Healthcare Centres across the country.
This statement was made by Pate on Wednesday in Abuja at the ongoing three-day Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review, themed “It’s for all of us: Accelerating our health sector reforms together.”
He said, “The Basic Health Care Provision Fund 2.0 reform uses equity considerations in distributing financial and human resources to over 8,000 primary healthcare centers through direct facilities. N45bn has already been disbursed directly to the states to serve our population.”
“We have mobilised more than N3bn in complementary funding over the past three years, including N2.1bn that has been confirmed over time, which will complement the Federal Government’s efforts. In the last year, several facilities have already been revitalized, and 2,600 are currently in the late stages of being upgraded throughout the states. Additionally, two thousand more facilities will be revitalized as part of this effort.”
“As a demonstration of the President’s commitment to improving the health workforce, we have announced that 120,000 frontline health workers will be retrained. More than 40,000 have already undergone retraining, and we are on track to meet and exceed the target.”
He stressed that there has been significant progress in tackling infectious diseases, with a 40% reduction in diarrhoeal diseases, a 24% reduction in tuberculosis (TB), and a 12% reduction in HIV.
“With this political commitment, we can accelerate our efforts in the right direction. Seventeen states have already shown improved performance on modern contraceptives, and six have already doubled their efforts.” “Following the executive order signed by the President, at least 40 businesses have submitted business cases to invest in local manufacturing. We’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Afreximbank for a billion-dollar credit line.”
“Our health security is also making progress, and based on a survey we conducted, the perception of Nigerians has improved. About half of Nigerians have endorsed the trajectory of Nigeria’s health system under the President’s leadership, and more than half are confident in the government’s capacity to effectively manage health emergencies.”
In his remarks, Hope Uzodinma, the Governor of Imo State, who represented the Nigeria Governor’s Forum noted that despite efforts to reduce under-five and infant mortality rates, the figures remain unacceptably high.
“While we have seen some improvements in health indicators, particularly in reducing under-five and infant mortality rates, these figures remain unacceptably high. Moreover, we have seen worsening trends in neonatal mortality and malnutrition. These statistics highlight the urgency of our work.”
“We must continue to work together, recognising the unique challenges each state faces while maintaining our shared focus on achieving better health outcomes for all Nigerians. I would also like to commend the Minister of Health for his continued efforts to translate the compact into action.” “The series of engagements carried out across all 36 states have ensured that key stakeholders are aligned on the sector-wide groups and understand their roles in each process.”
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to the health sector compact and to improving the health sector.
Real Madrid is reportedly pursuing Ademola Lookman as a potential replacement for Vinicius Junior, should their Brazilian star depart for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, who are prepared to offer a record-breaking €300 million. The UEFA Champions League holders see Lookman, currently playing for Atalanta, as an ideal addition to bolster their forward line.
Since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022 for €9.35 million, Lookman has delivered impressive performances, tallying 39 goals and 23 assists in 90 matches. The 27-year-old Nigerian forward, who was close to a Paris Saint-Germain move in August, continues to attract attention across Europe due to his versatility and ability to thrive on both wings.
Lookman’s remarkable 2023 season, which included 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 games and a stunning hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, has solidified his reputation as a top talent. With 7 goals and 5 assists in just 12 appearances this season, his form shows no signs of waning, sparking speculation of a high-profile transfer.
Madrid’s interest in Lookman comes amid uncertainties surrounding Vinicius Junior’s future, as Al-Hilal seeks to make him their marquee signing and a possible replacement for Neymar. If the deal proceeds, Real Madrid views Lookman as a prime candidate to seamlessly integrate into their squad and strengthen Carlo Ancelotti’s attack.
Lookman’s market value, currently set at €60 million, poses no challenge to Madrid’s budget. Ranked as the 14th best player globally at the Ballon d’Or ceremony and a strong contender for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, Lookman’s career trajectory aligns well with the demands of a club of Madrid’s stature.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has issued a global emergency appeal, calling on donors to provide critical resources for Lebanon as the Israel-Hezbollah conflict continues to escalate. During a recent visit to Beirut, IFRC Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain urged all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of paramedics, who face significant risks as they respond to the growing humanitarian crisis.
The IFRC’s emergency appeal seeks to raise 100 million Swiss Francs (approximately $115.8 million) to support both Lebanon and the Lebanese Red Cross. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 people and injured more than 13,000 in Lebanon, while hundreds of thousands have been displaced and are now sheltering in community centers across the country. As winter approaches, the IFRC emphasizes the urgent need for hygiene kits, blankets, heaters, and other essential supplies to support those affected.
Chapagain highlighted the immense challenges the region faces, noting that, even if hostilities were to cease, it would take substantial time for normalcy to return. The IFRC’s emergency appeal is designed to provide sustained support over two years, acknowledging the prolonged impact of the conflict and Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis.
The conflict has also seen casualties in Israel, with 68 soldiers and 41 civilians reported dead since October 2023, along with the displacement of over 60,000 individuals. The escalation on September 23 brought intense airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as Beirut’s southern suburbs, displacing nearly 1.2 million people.
Globally, over 30 Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers have been killed this year, with many more injured, a toll that Chapagain described as unprecedented. Among those affected are 17 members of the Lebanese Red Cross, who have been wounded while carrying out rescue operations.
Reaffirming the importance of humanitarian protection, Chapagain emphasized that the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems are internationally recognized and protected symbols. He also appealed for a united global effort to address the longstanding political challenges in the region.
