Ondo Poll: INEC Records 72% PVC Collection

0

Ahead of the Ondo State governorship election on November 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled a peace accord signing for November 8, with all candidates agreeing to commit to a violence-free election. The National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, will oversee the ceremony to promote a peaceful electoral process.

In a recent consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu announced a significant milestone in voter engagement, with nearly 72% of registered voters having collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). He further noted that a mock accreditation exercise is set for November 6 in select polling units to ensure smooth uploads to the results viewing portal.

To bolster election security, INEC is conducting a final assessment of logistical arrangements and has coordinated with security agencies to address any potential hotspots. Prof. Yakubu emphasized INEC’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment throughout the election period and acknowledged the vital role of civil society in encouraging peaceful elections.

He also urged CSOs who observed the recent Edo State election to submit their reports promptly, highlighting the commission’s ongoing engagement with officials, stakeholders, and security agencies as part of their readiness review for the Ondo election.

Senators Pledge Support for Distribution of 10 Billion Copies of Rhapsody of Realities for National Growth

0

In a notable show of support, senators have endorsed the initiative to distribute 10 billion copies of Rhapsody of Realities, a monthly devotional by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy Church. This ambitious project aims to inspire positive attitudinal changes that will contribute to growth and national development.

On Thursday, the senators voiced their commitment during the “Reach Out World Day with Rhapsody of Realities” launch held at the National Assembly Complex.

Senator Omueya Dafinone (APC/Delta) highlighted Rhapsody of Realities as a transformative guide offering daily reflections on God’s word to help readers worldwide lead better lives.

Senator Thomas Joel-Onowakpo (PDP/Delta) acknowledged the financial requirements for this extensive distribution, encouraging faith in the project’s funding.

Pastor Obi Chiemeka, Director of the Christ Embassy Ministry Centre in Abuja, shared that the devotional has already been translated into over 8,000 languages, including Braille for visually impaired readers. With ongoing translations in new dialects, the total language count is expected to reach 12,000, facilitating its monthly distribution globally.

Dr. Chris Iyam, Executive Director of CYPA-Africa, added that if lawmakers began their day by engaging with Rhapsody of Realities, they could be positively influenced in their legislative work. The launch at the National Assembly was strategic, reflecting the belief that the nation’s future rests significantly in the hands of its lawmakers.

This global distribution event is set for December 2, marking an unprecedented step in spreading the publication worldwide.

FG Secures N2.8 Billion Google Grant to Drive AI Talent and Innovation in Nigeria

0

The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured a N2.8 billion grant from Google to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) talent development nationwide. This collaboration aims to bridge skill gaps and position Nigeria as a leader in AI innovation across Africa.

At a press briefing in Abuja, Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced that the Google grant will support initiatives to train young Nigerians and boost AI startups. This strategic move is expected to enhance job creation and strengthen Nigeria’s economic resilience.

“This support from Google reaffirms our commitment to establishing Nigeria as a hub for AI innovation,” said Tijani. “Through Google’s resources and expertise, we’re equipping Nigerians with essential skills to excel in the global digital economy, marking a significant milestone toward an inclusive and innovative future for the country.”

The grant forms part of Google’s $5.8 million investment in digital skills across sub-Saharan Africa, and follows Nigeria’s recent N100 million AI fund launched in collaboration with Google. Tijani highlighted the program’s focus on key areas like healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance, with selected AI startups tackling local challenges to promote sustainable economic growth.

He emphasized that achieving meaningful development requires a strong ecosystem and partnerships: “The transformation we seek in Nigeria can’t be achieved by the government alone. Our role is to set the agenda, while collaborations like Google’s help build the economy we envision.”

Matt Brittin, Google’s EMEA President, added that the grant will fuel Nigeria’s “3 Million Technical Talents” (3MTT) initiative, aimed at cultivating AI expertise for 20,000 Nigerians over four years. The 3MTT program, launched on October 13, focuses on expanding Nigeria’s technical talent pool and positioning the nation as a major contributor of digital skills globally.

Through this initiative, Google plans to train 125,000 educators and empower 10 Nigerian AI startups with N100 million in funding, $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, and mentorship from Google engineers. “Our commitment of N2.8 billion to the Data Scientists Network Foundation aligns with the Minister’s vision for advancing AI skills and opportunities across Nigeria,” Brittin said.

West Ham Eyes Star Striker Ademola Lookman

0

West Ham United is leading the competition to secure Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, aiming to outpace Premier League rivals Manchester United and Arsenal, as well as PSG, for his signature.

According to GIVEMESPORT, the London club considers the 2024 Ballon d’Or nominee a prime target to strengthen Julen Lopetegui’s attack after a challenging start to the season.

Lookman had an outstanding 2023/24 season with Atalanta, recording 17 goals and 10 assists in all competitions. His season highlight included a memorable hat-trick in the Europa League final, which clinched the Italian club’s first European trophy.

His impressive form earned him a 14th-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings, surpassing notable Premier League talents like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Cole Palmer.

The versatile 27-year-old, who transitioned from winger to striker during his time in Italy, could be available for approximately €25 million, despite being under contract with Atalanta until 2026. Reports from Italy suggest that Lookman may seek a new challenge and could depart from Serie A as early as January.

This season, Lookman has maintained his strong performance, contributing five goals and five assists in just 10 appearances. West Ham views him as an ideal addition to their attack, which includes Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, and Lucas Paqueta. The Hammers are eager to address their striker needs, given Michail Antonio’s advancing age and summer signing Niclas Fullkrug’s struggles to find form.

Four Premier League Clubs Eye Samuel Chukwueze from AC Milan

0

Four English Premier League clubs—Fulham, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and West Ham United—are reportedly interested in signing Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze from AC Milan in the upcoming January transfer window. Sources from Caught Offside suggest that Milan may consider allowing Chukwueze to depart if they can secure Manchester United’s Brazilian winger Antony this winter.

Aston Villa currently lead the race for the 25-year-old, largely due to manager Unai Emery’s past relationship with Chukwueze from their time together at Villarreal, where they won the Europa League and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Since joining AC Milan on a five-year deal in July 2023, Chukwueze has struggled for consistent game time. In the 2023/24 season, he started in only 14 of his 33 appearances, contributing three goals and three assists. This season, he has made just four starts in 11 matches, though he recently showcased his skills with a decisive goal against Udinese and an assist in Milan’s 3-1 Champions League win over Club Brugge.

Chukwueze played the full 90 minutes in Milan’s recent 2-0 loss to Napoli, although he was unable to leave a significant mark on the match. As January approaches, his future at Milan may hinge on his upcoming performances under manager Paulo Fonseca, as the club weighs potential additions to bolster their offensive lineup.

FCCPC Unveils Market Cartels Fueling Price Inflation Across Nigeria

0

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has raised alarms over market cartels that are artificially inflating prices of goods and services across Nigeria, undermining government stabilization initiatives.

During a one-day stakeholder engagement in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, FCCPC CEO Mr. Tunji Bello revealed concerning findings from the Commission’s investigations in key cities. In particular, he highlighted issues within the poultry sector, where influential companies manipulate prices to the detriment of smaller producers. “Previously, small poultry farmers sold day-old chicks for between N480 and N590 with reasonable profits,” Bello noted. “But the entry of two major players drastically altered this dynamic,” he added, refraining from naming these companies.

These companies, he explained, injected significant capital and now control 80 to 90 percent of the poultry market, effectively setting prices by commandeering the local farmers’ association. “They mandated that day-old chicks be priced at N1,350, defying the natural economic trend where larger production usually lowers costs,” Bello continued.

This price manipulation, according to Bello, has kept prices high even as the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security continues to support poultry farmers through various interventions like feed, broilers, vitamins, and financial aid across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Bello also highlighted exploitative pricing in the packaging industry, where a cartel of five major importers tightly controls the supply of packaging materials. “They operate like a mafia. If you attempt to negotiate with one, the others are immediately informed, ensuring price consistency,” Bello remarked.

Addressing enforcement, Bello explained that the FCCPC initially prioritizes dialogue with businesses in the spirit of democracy, reserving harsher penalties for severe infractions. He encouraged Akwa Ibom’s business community to collaborate with the FCCPC in curbing exploitative practices.

To alleviate the financial burden on consumers, Bello noted President Bola Tinubu’s introduction of relief measures, such as the elimination of tariffs on food imports, VAT exemptions on pharmaceuticals and medical devices, tax breaks for certain businesses and public transport, and facilitating credit for converting vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG).

“It is only fair that our business sector reflects these benefits in consumer prices,” Bello emphasized.

Several speakers voiced their concerns over the rising costs of doing business in Nigeria, including high interest rates, multiple taxation, and escalating electricity tariffs.

Dr. Abdullahi Adamu, FCCPC’s Executive Commissioner for Operations, invited attendees to propose strategies to combat cartel behavior and improve market conditions.

Kenya High Court Approves Kithure Kindiki’s Appointment as Deputy President

0

Kenya’s High Court has cleared the path for Kithure Kindiki to be sworn in as deputy president, following the impeachment of his predecessor. This decision lifts a previous court order that delayed Kindiki’s inauguration. Rigathi Gachagua, the former deputy president, was removed from office two weeks prior when parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of his impeachment.

Immediately after the impeachment, President William Ruto nominated Kindiki, who is also the interior minister, to succeed Gachagua. However, Gachagua contested his ousting in court, calling it a politically driven move. Although parliament had approved Kindiki’s appointment, a court initially halted his swearing-in, pending Gachagua’s legal challenge.

On Thursday, a three-judge panel rescinded this delay, ruling that leaving the deputy president’s office vacant for too long was “untenable” and emphasizing the need for continuity in the role. Gachagua’s legal team has vowed to appeal the court’s decision, though the judges permitted ongoing legal proceedings to challenge Gachagua’s impeachment.

The impeachment itself included accusations against Gachagua of inciting ethnic divisions and violating his oath of office, charges that were upheld by lawmakers. Gachagua, who was in the hospital during the impeachment, contends he was denied a fair hearing and insists the charges lack evidence. Known as “Riggy G” among supporters, Gachagua is a prominent businessman from the influential Mount Kenya region, a key supporter base for Ruto in the 2022 elections.

At 59, Gachagua is the first deputy president to be impeached under Kenya’s 2010 constitution. Kindiki, 52, a former law professor and also from Mount Kenya, had been a leading candidate for the position. Gachagua’s removal caps a bitter rift with Ruto, which intensified after violent protests erupted in June over tax hikes, exposing divisions within the ruling party.

China Celebrates Success as its Youngest Astronauts Reach space

0

China celebrated a significant achievement as its youngest astronauts reached space aboard the Shenzhou 19 spacecraft, carrying a three-person crew that includes China’s first female space engineer. After a six-hour journey, the spacecraft successfully docked with China’s Tiangong space station, where the crew will remain for six months to conduct experiments and perform spacewalks. This mission is a crucial step in China’s long-term goal of landing astronauts on the Moon by 2030.

The launch of Shenzhou 19 was deemed a “complete success” and is part of a record-breaking year for China’s space program, with over 100 launches planned to solidify its status as a global space power, in competition with the United States. The launch was a spectacle, with flames and thunderous noise lighting up the Gobi Desert, while crowds gathered to cheer on the “taikonauts,” China’s term for astronauts.

At the Tiangong space station, the Shenzhou 19 crew joined three other astronauts from the Shenzhou 18 mission, who are set to return to Earth on November 4. China’s rapid space advancements align with President Xi Jinping’s vision of establishing China as a dominant force in space exploration, a vision he described as an “eternal dream.”

In the U.S., some view China’s accelerated progress as a strategic challenge. Earlier this year, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson described the two countries as being in an implicit “race” to the Moon, with concerns that China may aim to stake territorial claims on the lunar surface, blending its civilian and military ambitions in space.

Fubara Appeals Court Ruling Stopping Rivers Allocations

0

The Rivers State Government has appealed a recent Federal High Court ruling from Abuja that bars the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from disbursing federation allocations to the state. Governor Siminalayi Fubara also celebrated overcoming an impeachment attempt by the state House of Assembly faction led by Martin Amaewhule, who is reportedly aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, confirmed the appeal, expressing confidence that the Appeal Court would reverse the Federal High Court’s decision. He noted procedural irregularities in the initial judgment, citing refusals to admit council chairmen as co-defendants, change state representation, or address jurisdiction concerns.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, rebuked Governor Fubara’s 2024 budget presentation, which was approved by a four-member House of Assembly faction and labeled a constitutional violation. Justice Abdulmalik argued that the absence of a lawful appropriation bill undermines fiscal accountability, resulting in her order to restrict access to state funds held by Zenith Bank and Access Bank.

The Rivers government fears the ruling could impede civil service operations, including local government salaries and development projects, if upheld by the Appeal Court.

Kenya Secures $606 Million IMF Loan

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $606 million loan for Kenya to support the nation as it tackles mounting debt and revenue challenges following recent financial setbacks.

Kenya recognized as an economic leader in East Africa, is currently burdened with around $80 billion in both external and domestic debt, with interest payments consuming two-thirds of its annual revenue—exceeding the country’s healthcare and education expenditures.

This IMF loan approval follows delayed reviews due to widespread protests triggered by a proposed finance bill, which aimed to generate approximately $2 billion through new taxes across various sectors.

The unrest, fueled by ongoing inflation and corruption scandals, resulted in over 60 fatalities and led to President William Ruto ultimately withdrawing the bill.

Despite socio-economic pressures, “Kenya’s economy remains resilient, with growth above the regional average, decreasing inflation, and external inflows that are strengthening the shilling and external reserves,” remarked Gita Gopinath, IMF’s first deputy managing director. However, Gopinath emphasized the need for improved revenue and export performance, given the setbacks from the abandoned finance bill.

She highlighted the necessity of transparent communication regarding the benefits of future reforms and stressed the importance of bolstering Kenya’s banking sector, as well as addressing governance and corruption issues.

Earlier this month, Kenya requested an IMF-led audit on governance, aligning with recommendations from Western creditors to enhance the nation’s financial transparency and reputation after recent corruption scandals and the violent suppression of protests.
