EPL: Haaland Shines, Iwobi Nets His 23rd As Arsenal Gain Ground

0

There were 20 goals in eight matches on Saturday, with City’s hitman Haaland grabbing his first hattrick of the season and Iwobi’s first goal giving Fulham their first win

Saturday’s matchday 2 in the 2024/25 EPL season delivered a flurry of goals as last season’s top two teams made strong statements, showing they are once again serious title contenders. From the Etihad, where champions Manchester City showcased their dominance, to Villa Park, where Arsenal avenged last season’s defeats that cost them the EPL title.

Erling Haaland, the EPL’s top scorer for the past two seasons, has hit the ground running, already netting four goals in the first two weeks of the 2024/25 season. The extraordinary Norwegian recorded his 23rd career hat-trick, bringing his tally to 67 goals in 68 EPL appearances.

Ipswich’s first visit to the Etihad started brightly, with Sammie Szmodics opening the scoring in the seventh minute, but the defending champions quickly responded with three goals in four minutes, aided by a mistake from Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

Earlier in the day, Brighton secured their second win of the season thanks to a late goal from João Pedro. Former United striker Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, marking his 100th EPL goal, but United equalised through Amad Diallo on the hour. United thought they had taken the lead with a goal from Alejandro Garnacho 10 minutes later, but it was disallowed due to Joshua Zirkzee’s interference. Zirkzee was offside.

Pedro’s free header in the 95th minute sealed the three points, keeping Brighton joint-top with City.

On the banks of the Thames, Alex Iwobi scored his first goal of the season, leading Fulham to a 2-1 victory over a struggling Leicester City side featuring Wilfred Ndidi. New signing Emile Smith Rowe marked his official debut with an 18th-minute goal, but Leicester equalised just before halftime with a header from Wout Faes. Fulham secured the win with a counter-attacking goal from Iwobi in the 70th minute, earning their first season victory.

Iwobi, who now has 23 EPL goals in his 254th league appearance, will aim to surpass last season’s five goals. His Super Eagles teammate Calvin Bassey also played the full 90 minutes.

Joe Aribo’s Southampton continue to struggle after their promotion, falling 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest. Aribo lost possession on the edge of the box, leading to Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal after a clearance fell to him. The Saints have lost two games despite playing well but have yet to earn any points. For Forest, Ola Aina started as the left-back, while Taiwo Awoniyi replaced Chris Wood in the 76th minute.

Arsenal’s title credentials were rigorously tested at Villa Park, but they emerged with all three points. Mikel Arteta will be grateful for both luck and goalkeeper David Raya.

Ollie Watkins missed two golden opportunities to give Villa the lead—first in the first half when he side-footed wide in a one-on-one with Raya, and then in the second half when Raya made an incredible save to keep the scoreline level.

Substitute Leandro Trossard broke the deadlock, and Thomas Partey added a second in the 77th minute, securing some revenge against the only team to defeat the Gunners twice in the league last season.

Elsewhere, Everton, another relegation candidate, suffered a 4-0 defeat at Tottenham, with Son Heung-Min scoring twice, bringing Everton’s total to seven goals conceded in their first two games. West Ham, meanwhile, earned their first points of the season with a 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace.

Naira Strengthens to N1570.14 Against the Dollar

0

The Nigerian Naira showed significant strength against the US dollar during Friday’s trading session. According to FMDQ data, the Naira appreciated to N1570.14/$, an improvement from N1586.1/$ recorded on Thursday. This represents a notable N16 gain against the US dollar compared to the previous day’s rate in Nigeria’s FX Market.

On the black market, the Naira also saw an increase in value, rising from N1620/$ to N1615/$ on Friday. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ramped up efforts this month to reduce the volatility of the Naira’s exchange rate.

These measures, coupled with the US dollar index hitting new lows this year due to a more dovish Fed statement, have contributed to the Naira’s gradual strengthening against the dollar.

The Naira began its upward trend after hitting a low of N1,912/$ in late February. It fell below N1,000/$ in April and is now hovering around N1,585/$. Despite the current gains, a recent survey conducted by the CBN reveals that Nigerian businesses expect the Naira to weaken further before seeing a more robust recovery in late 2024 or early 2025.

The CBN Business Expectations Survey, which involved over 1,600 Nigerian businesses, indicated that while there is concern about the Naira’s immediate future, the majority of businesses remain optimistic.

The survey also noted that despite the CBN injecting millions into the forex market, many businesses still anticipate the Naira to weaken in July and August, as well as over the next three months.

While the Naira has shown strength against the dollar in recent sessions, the outlook for the currency remains mixed, with expectations of both short-term challenges and long-term resilience.

Mpox Poses A Major Risk To People Living With HIV – NACA

0

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS has urged the public to take preventive measures against the growing threat of Mpox, in line with its dedication to ensuring the health and safety of Nigerians, particularly those living with HIV.

The Director General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori, said this in a statement signed by the agency’s Head of Public Relations & Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe.

Ilori emphasized the heightened risk faced by people living with HIV, stating, “While anyone can contract Mpox, individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those living with HIV, may experience more severe symptoms.

She further added that NACA is actively monitoring the situation and collaborating with public health authorities to ensure that adequate information and resources are accessible.

She said, “Our priority remains the health and well-being of Nigerians, especially those who are most vulnerable. We are committed to providing the necessary support to help people living with HIV navigate this added challenge.”

Dr. Ilori advised the public to remain vigilant and informed, underscoring the importance of early detection and treatment.

Mpox is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease occurring in several African countries, including the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. Although the precise source of the virus is still unknown, rodents, squirrels, and monkeys are thought to be involved in its spread.  The Mpox virus can spread from animal to human and from human to human.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention advised the public to avoid people exhibiting symptoms, especially those with rashes or skin lesions, to stop the spread of the mpox virus.

Additionally, it urged the public to practice good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

New Study Reveals More UK Schools Removing LGBTQ+ Books After Complaints From Parents

0

A recent survey found that over half of UK school librarians have been asked to remove books, many of which are LGBTQ+ titles, with parents being the main source of these requests.

A six-month investigation carried out by the Index on Censorship revealed that 28 out of 53 librarians surveyed – 53% – reported being asked to remove books. In over half of these cases, the books were taken off the shelves.

One school librarian who took part in the study was allegedly instructed to remove all books with LGBTQ+ themes following a single complaint from one parent about a specific book.

Notable titles that have faced complaints include “This Book Is Gay” by Juno Dawson, “Julián is a Mermaid” by Jessica Love, and “ABC Pride” by Louie Stowell, Elly Barnes, and Amy Phelps.

Several schools faced challenges to books, including various “Heartstopper” titles by Alice Oseman, which were criticised for homophobic language, swearing, and discussions of self-harm.

More than half of the requests for book removals came from parents.

The UK bans may be influenced by similarly intensifying book censorship trends in the US, which reached record highs last year.

Harvey Weinstein To Remain In New York Prison While Awaiting Rape Retrial

0

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein will remain in custody in New York while awaiting retrial on rape and sexual assault charges in Manhattan, prosecutors have confirmed.

Weinstein made a brief court appearance related to California’s request to extradite him there.

After the New York case is complete, he will return to California to serve his pending 16-year sentence for a separate rape conviction there first, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement.

“Today, defendant Harvey Weinstein was formally arraigned on a governor’s warrant issued by Governor Kathy Hochul, who exercised her authority for him to remain in New York State until his case in New York County is adjudicated,” Katz said. “He will serve the California sentence first, as it is now his primary sentence.”

Weinstein, who has denied that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone, was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 while already serving a 23-year sentence in New York.

His 2020 conviction in Manhattan was thrown out this spring by the state’s top court, which ruled that the judge in the original trial unfairly allowed testimony against Weinstein based on allegations that weren’t part of the case.

The retrial in Manhattan is tentatively scheduled for November.

The 72-year-old Weinstein, with one hand cuffed to his wheelchair and another grasping a book and a magazine, appeared in Queens criminal court for less than five minutes yesterday as his lawyers agreed that he will remain at the nearby Rikers Island jail complex. Weinstein has returned there after being hospitalized last month for health problems.

The extradition matter has been taking place in Queens, rather than Manhattan, court due to its proximity to Rikers Island.

Prosecutors in Manhattan said last month that they aim to bring new sexual assault charges against Weinstein but haven’t given more details, nor a timeline for bringing the potential new charges.

Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala suggested at the time that prosecutors’ talk of new accusers raised questions about the strength of their current case.

Two 18-year-olds Charged With Murder Of Former ‘General Hospital’ Actor Johnny Wactor

0

Two 18-year-old men have been charged with murder in the killing of former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor.

Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada were each charged Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, District Attorney George Gasón said at a news conference.

“The loss of this talented young actor, who was in the prime of his life and had so much to offer the world, is deeply felt by all of us,” Gascón said.

The men and two co-defendants, all of whom were arrested Thursday, were set to be arraigned on Monday afternoon. It is not clear whether any have yet retained lawyers. An email to the county public defender’s office seeking comment on the case was not immediately answered.

Wactor was shot and killed when he interrupted three thieves stealing the catalytic converter from his car on May 25. Police said the 37-year-old had left work at a downtown LA rooftop bar with a coworker when he saw three men who had hoisted his car. Police said one of them fired at him without provocation and killed him.

Barceleau and Estrada were also both charged with grand theft and attempted robbery.
Barceleau’s charges include special circumstances, including murder during an attempted robbery and personal use of a firearm, that after a conviction could lead to a life sentence without possibility of parole. Estrada’s charges have a maximum sentence of life in prison.

A third man who authorities allege were with them, Leonel Gutierrez, was charged with grand theft and attempted robbery. A fourth, Frank Olano, was charged with being an accessory after the fact.

Wactor’s death has become a rallying point for some in the city pushing for a more hardline approach to fighting crime.

A group consisting of family and friends calling itself “Justice for Johnny” held a rally last week calling for more urgency in the investigation, and another Monday morning calling for aggressive prosecution.

Somerset House Fire: Relief As Art Gallery Reopens

0

The Courtauld Gallery at Somerset House has reopened to the public after a fire in the building, but the rest of the landmark remains closed “until further notice”.

About 125 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze as smoke billowed across central London on Saturday.

Visitors queued outside the gallery before it opened at 10:00 BST on Sunday, with one person saying he was “sad” to see the fire but “relieved” the art was safe.

The fire was in an area of the building that was not housing any valuable art and no injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

A fire broke out in the west wing of the building, which is mostly used for offices and storage, at about midday on Saturday.

The director of Somerset House Trust, Jonathan Reekie, said there were “no valuable artefacts or artworks” in that part of the building.
