Another Day Of Reckoning For Under-Performing Super Eagles

0

Draw specialists, Super Eagles of Nigeria have another opportunity to get their World Cup qualification back on course as they face the Cheetahs of Benin at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

This is part of the Match Day 4 series of the World Cup qualifying duels in Africa. The Super Eagles are yet to win any match so far.

It is the first time in 64 years that a Nigerian team had gone through three  World Cup qualifying matches without winning any.

Will they extend their no-win streak to four this Monday as they face Gernot Rohr’s trained Benin Republic team. Rohr, a Franco-German coach was previously with Nigeria and was the coach when Nigeria knocked out Benin in the qualifying sereis for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Now his allegiance has taken a new turn. He is now working to further complicate the precarious situations the under-performing Super Eagles have found themselves.

Rohr’s Knowledge Of Super Eagles Will Confuse Him, Says Ndidi

Acting skipper of the Super Eagles, Wilfred Ndidi is positive of his team getting a good result in the World Cup qualifying match with Benin Republic this Monday evening in Abidjan.

In an audio clip of the interview he had with the team’s new media officer, Promise Efoghe, Ndidi remarked that himself and the rest of the squad knew why they are in Abidjan and that they will achieve their objective.

The Super Eagles face the Cheetahs of Benin at 5pm Nigerian time. The Benin team is being handled by Gernot Rohr who managed the Super Eagles for five years – the longest single spell any coach ever had with the team.

It is therefore expected that he have inside information about the Super Eagles. Ndidi has dispelled the notion that that will offer Benin an advantage.

“Yes, he coached us for five years and we know he is a good coach. Facing him is a motivation for us”, remarked the acting skipper.

“We know he will plan to win based on his information about us, but we are approaching the game with a winning mentality mindset. We are in very high spirit”, the mid-fielder remarked.

Super Eagles Focused On Benin, Says Finidi

Super Eagles head coach Finidi George says they have put behind them Friday’s 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana of South Africa, and focusing on their next opponent Republic of Benin.

Looking for their first win of the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Nigeria could only limp to a lame 1-1 draw against the visiting Bafana Bafana.

He said during the post-match interview: “We started sloppy in the first half, we took over the game immediately we scored in the second half. We missed chances; overall it was not a bad second half for us. The players reacted well in the second half, but it was not the best result we wanted, we have to get our heads up and work for the next game (Benin Republic). I am not happy about the point.”

Nigeria will next trade tackles with the Benin Republic on Monday, in what is a reunion with former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.

Rohr’s Benin boast four points from three games, one better than Nigeria’s tally from the same number of matches.

In a game of two contrasting halves, South Africa dominated the opening 45 minutes and were unlucky to head to the halftime break with only Themba Zwane’s excellent strike to show for their industry and invention.

The Super Eagles, however, flew out of the blocks after the break and equalized in the 46th minute through Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who was making

Olympic Day Celebrations Hold June 29, Says NOC Scribe

1

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), on Sunday, said the annual Olympic Day celebration would be held on June 29 across the country.

The Olympic Day is a global event that commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Movement, founded by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894.

Secretary-General of the NOC, Babatunde Popoola, said this year’s celebration holds special significance as it precedes the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

”It’s where Nigerian athletes will compete and inspire the world with their achievements.

”Olympic Day is a chance for people of all ages and abilities to experience the magic of the Olympic Games in their own communities.

”It’s an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activity and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect,” Popoola said.

Popoola said that NOC had received positive responses from various states and stakeholders, and preparations were well underway for the nationwide celebration.

He added that no fewer than 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory have indicated their plans to organise activities for the event.

The states are: Abia; Anambra; Bayelsa; Delta; Edo; Enugu; Ebonyi; Lagos; Kogi; Gombe; Jigawa; Kebbi; Kano; Kwara; Taraba; Imo; Ondo; Plateau; Rivers; Nasarawa; and Osun

Also speaking, the Chairman of the NOC Sport For All Commission, Abdul Ibrahim, said that Olympic Day was a special day to come together, move together, and learn about the Olympic values.

”We encourage everyone to participate and experience the joy that only sport can bring,” he said.

According to him, a series of activities have been lined up in Lagos, with fitness clubs at the National Stadium Complex and the general public gearing up to take part in the global event.

”The celebration will conclude with the presentation of diplomas signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.

”The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel and other dignitaries will officially flag off the event in Abuja,” he added.

Ibrahim said that the NOC also encouraged corporate and philanthropic individuals to support the celebration through financial or product donations, as it would provide valuable exposure for their companies.

IPOB Threatens to Sue If Labelled As Terrorist Group

0

The lead counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, on Friday warned the Presidency, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, and Nigerians to desist from referring to the group as a terrorist organization.

Ejimakor warned that such a defamatory and prejudicial label attached to IPOB would be “met and countervailed with muscular litigation and other lawful measures.”

He based this warning on a subsisting judgment of a High Court in Nigeria, which ruled that the proscription/declaration of IPOB as a terrorist group by the past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari is illegal, discriminatory, and unconstitutional.

IPOB attacks Army base in Imo

In a statement he signed, Ejimakor said: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Team is under firm instructions from our client to issue this final warning to all persons and institutions still referring to IPOB as a terrorist organization.

“Henceforth, any further reference to IPOB as a terrorist organization will be met and countervailed with muscular litigation and other lawful measures, regardless of the entity involved. This is because there is a subsisting judgment of a competent High Court in Nigeria (attached herewith) which ruled that IPOB’s proscription/declaration as a terrorist group by Buhari is illegal, discriminatory, and unconstitutional. Compliance with this judgment strictly demands that IPOB should no longer be referred to as a terrorist organization.

“Additionally, those labeling IPOB as a terrorist organization have not provided any evidence that IPOB has engaged in any terrorist activity. This is underscored by the fact that since the so-called proscription of IPOB in 2017, no single alleged IPOB member has been convicted of any terrorist act, despite thousands of arrests, abductions, torture, false flags, and extrajudicial killings levied against its alleged members.

“Accordingly, we hereby demand that the general public, the Presidency, the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police, and any erring media houses should forthwith cease and desist from attaching such defamatory and prejudicial labels to IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

MultiChoice Nigeria has rejected the ruling of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter.

The CCPT had on Friday fined MultiChoice N150 million for disobeying its order on subscription rates hike for DStv and Gotv packages.

The tribunal, sitting in Abuja, also ordered the PayTv operator to give a one-month free subscription to all its Nigerian subscribers on the DStv and Gotv platforms, for flouting its order.

Multichoice Raises DStv, GOtv Subscription Prices

The three-member tribunal chaired by Thomas Okosun in a ruling, found Multichoice culpable of contempt, by flouting its earlier order restraining the PayTv operator from implementing hike in its subscription rates for DStv and GOtv.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) had, on April 29, restrained MultiChoice from increasing its tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on May 1.

The tribunal gave the interim order following an ex-parte motion moved by Ejiro Awaritoma, counsel for the applicant, Festus Onifade.

But MultiChoice, in a statement on Friday disagreed with the ruling, saying it would file an appeal against the ruling.

“MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter.

“We disagree with the ruling and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling. As the matter is currently sub Judice, we are restrained from making further comments,” the company said.

Labour Rejects Fg’s Fresh N60,000 Minimum Wage Offer, Insists On N494,000

“We are almost there because are just about to sign the dot and there will be a complete closure. Every other thing will follow.”

“The committee has worked so hard, and the committee has reached an agreement. The tripartite committee is made up of three parties -the government, the Organised Private Sector (OPS) and the organised labour.

“In the wisdom of the committee, it has put together a recommendation that will be forwarded to Mr President for further action.

“The organised private sector and the Federal Government have agreed on N62, 000 while the organised labour is asking for N250, 000.

“At the end of the day what is important is that we are talking. There is no hostility anymore. And the national anxiety is going to be relaxed as soon as this is made public,” he added.

Speaking, Chairman of the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage, Goni Aji said the recommendation that they had was as a result of a deep dialogue and consensus reached at the Tripartite level.

According to him, the situation that “we are recommending to Mr President, somehow, is repeating itself because it happened in the 2018 exercise.

“In 2018, it was the other way. The organised private sector and the organised labour recommended N30, 000 as minimum wage while the government side recommended N24, 000.

“Two figures were recommended to the then President for his consideration and onward transmission to the National Assembly for it to become a law. That is exactly where we are,” he said.

He added that the mandate of the tripartite committee is to recommend and “has no powers to approve but to recommend.”

Aji said that the recommendation reached came as a result of deeper understanding and studies of all the economic indices and current inflation, state of the economy.

“At the end of the day what is important is that we are still talking,” he noted.

This comes after the organized labour dropped its demand from N494,000 to N250,000.

TINUBU’S ONE YEAR IN OFFICE: POLITICS IN VIEW

0

President Bola Tinubu was sworn in as the 16th president of Nigeria on the 29th of May, 2023. Tinubu, who contested under the All Progressive Party, pulled 8.79 million votes to defeat the other 17 candidates who contested for the seat on February 25, 2023

Within one year in office, several policies have been enacted by the president and members of his cabinet which have directly impacted Nigerians.

In he’s inaugural speech, President Tinubu highlighted key priority areas: Security, Economy, Jobs, Agriculture, Infrastructure, Monetary Policy and Foreign Policy. One of he’s notable policy was the removal of fuel subsidy.

The announcement of the removal of subsidy was met with mixed reactions with major backlash coming Opposition parties.

LP condemned the president’s action, saying it was a unilateral decision taken without any form of consultation with Organised Labour and other relevant stakeholders.

The PDP in statement noted that Atiku as President would have been briefed by experts on the ground and would strategically staggered the process and this would entail less suffering to Nigerians.

The Nigerian Organised Labour will later go on to hold a nationwide protest

In a bid to address concerns on how he’s administration would cushion the effect of Subsidy removal President Tinubu announced on 31st of July that N1tn was saved. He further announced programmes to be funded with N500 billion approved from an $800 million World Bank loan.

Some of the programmes ranged from:

1. Manufacturing: with a N75 billion allocation to boost the manufacturing sector,

2. MSMEs: N125 billion fund to earmarked to support businesses across the country.

3. Others in Agriculture

4. Cost-Efficient Mass Transit. According to president Tinubu, provision had been made “to invest N100 billion to acquire 3000 units of 20-seater CNG-fueled buses”.

5. Lastly, the president harped on Salary Review

Also the federal government announced a N5 billion palliative for each state of the federation, including the (FCT), to cushion the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy.

Asides from efforts to tackling Economic Hardship, when President Tinubu assumed office, he had meetings with security services chiefs. He will later go on to relieve them of their duties and appoint new service chiefs and Nuhu Ribadu as he’s National Security Adviser.

Another major highlight of Tinbu’s Politics played out during the race to elect leadership positions at the 10th Senate and House of Assembly. The tussle over the choice of principal officers lingered for days. Religion and region from which the leaders would emerge, would play a key role on who emerged as both President Tinubu and he’s Vice Shettima were Muslims.

Eventually, with the APC in majority of both chambers of the national assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio was elected as president of the Senate, and Senator Barau Jubrin as deputy Senate president.

At the lower chamber, Tajudeen Abbass, was elected Speaker of the House and Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker. A feat which will go on to facilitate a smooth relationship between the executive arm and legislative branch of government, which led to speedy approval of bills sent to the National Assembly.

Following the election of the national assembly leadership. Much speculations persisted over who will serve as a minister in Tinubu’s administration. On the 16th of August, President Bola Tinubu unveiled the portfolios for the 45 confirmed ministerial nominees. Mixed reactions followed, with many decrying the number of the ministers and worry over managing the cost of governance.

After Senate screening and confirmation by the senate, Minister Designates were inaugurated. During the inaugural Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Tinubu’s ministers unveiled the 8-point agenda to revive the country’s ailing economy, they are food security; ending poverty, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, particularly consumer credit, inclusivity in all its dimensions, particularly as regards youths and women, improving security, improving the playing field on which people and particularly companies operate, rule of law, and of course and fighting corruption.

Another worthy mention in the overview of Politics under the Tinubu’s one year in office is the Presidential Election tussle saga. It all began when Opposition presidential candidates of the People’s Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi sought redress at the lower and high court of appeal.

After coming out victorious at the appeal court, on 6th September, the Supreme Court ruled that Nigeria’s main opposition parties failed to prove claims of electoral malpractice against the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in February’s disputed elections.

With a new year in sight after securing legitimacy of presidency, President Bola Tinubu forwarded the 2024 appropriation bill before the National Assembly which scaled through both the Upper and lower chambers.

On the first of January, President signed the N28.7 trillion 2024 appropriation bill into law. While the budget was without controversies, Senator Ningi alleged that N3.7 trillion, representing more than 10% of the N28.78 trillion budget was padded.

As President Tinubu marks one year in office, recent policies and initiatives ranging from Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway construction, Floating of the Naira, Increase in electricity tariff have exacerbated economic hardship. With three more years to go, President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda is still far from being fully realized.

Senate Recalls Ningi From Three Months Suspension

0

The Senate on Tuesday, May 28, recalled Senator Abdul Ningi from a three-month suspension.

Ningi representing Bauchi Central on the platform of the peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  (PDP) was on March 12, suspended for three months by the Senate for claiming during a BBC Hausa Service interview that the National Assembly passed two 2024 Appropriation Bills.

He also alleged that the 2024 budget was padded to the tune of N3.7 trillion.

The Senate had rejected the allegations, saying the amount was meant for statutory transfers to federal government institutions on first-line charge.

Ningi had through his counsel, Femi Falana SAN, wrote to the Senate president and gave him seven days ultimatum to recall him or face legal action.

Akpabio in his reaction to the ultimatum said the suspension of Ningi was not a unilateral action by him but the collective decision of the Senate.

However, the suspension was lifted on Tuesday following the consideration and adoption of a motion titled: “Motion for the unconditional recall of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, sponsored by the Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP – Benue South).

Moro said that the minority leadership of the Senate has taken full responsibility for Ningi’s action and apologised to the Senate on his behalf.

Moro in his lead debate said to the Senate: “Notes that on Tuesday 12th March 2024, this very revered loth Senate in plenary suspended the former Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum, Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi of Bauchi Central Senatorial District for three months following a media interview he granted the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa Service on March 9, 2024, in which he alleged that about 3.7 trillion Naira representing over 10% of the 2024 budget was illegally inserted into the 2024 National Budget.

“Notes further that Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi was asked to address his allegation of budget padding against the National Assembly, following a motion of urgent national importance moved by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, the chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriations.

“And failing to address the allegation, the Senate resolved to suspend Senator Abdul Ahmed Ning for three months for violating legislative rules, misconduct, and unethical behaviour for the interview he granted on BBC Media on the 2024 Appropriation Act, legislation which process he was part of.

“Aware that the said Senator Abdul Ahmed Ninigi, being under suspension, has spent over two months outside the precincts of the National Assembly Complex and needs to return to continue with his legislative activities as the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District;

“Flowing from the above the Senate Minority Leadership takes full responsibility for the actions of our colleague Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi and apologizes on his behalf.”

He urged the Senate to reconsider the additional resolution of the Senate of the Votes and Proceedings of Wednesday 13th March, 2024, to recall Senator Abdul Ahmad Ning to the Senate as senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

Senators approved the prayer of the motion when it was put to voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary.
