‘Dune: Part Two’ Races to $97 Million at International Box Office

0

Director Denis Villeneuve’s otherworldly sequel has generated $97 million from 71 overseas markets, bringing its global tally to a promising $178.5 million. Those worldwide revenues include $81.5 million from North American theaters, where it landed the biggest domestic opening weekend of the year.

The movie, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, has been embraced in the U.S. and Canada. But the backers of “Dune 2” need overseas audiences to keep the ticket sales flowing as freely as spice on the desert planet of Arrakis. That’s because Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment spent $190 million to produce and roughly $100 million more to promote the film to global audiences. Those hefty fees mean the tentpole will require outsized admissions to turn a profit.

At this rate, though, the second “Dune” already looks well positioned in its box office run. It helps that the movie has been especially popular in Imax and other premium large formats, which cost more than the average ticket and accounted for 48% of initial sales.

In 2021, the original “Dune” was hobbled in North America because it debuted simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. But the film was granted a traditional run at the international box office. (Well, as traditional as it gets at a time when many countries still had capacity restrictions in place due to the pandemic). Even with those limitations, “Dune” powered to an impressive $324.8 million overseas and $402 million globally.

The sequel marks the largest opening weekend of Villeneuve’s career in all 71 markets, meaning it improved upon the first film in every territory. “Part Two” enjoyed the biggest international start in the United Kingdom with $11.8 million, followed by France ($9.6 million), Germany ($9.1 million), Korea ($6.9 million) and Australia ($6 million). It has yet to open in China or Japan, two major overseas markets.

Positive word-of-mouth and interest in all things Imax should keep the ticket sales flowing for “Dune: Part Two.” Based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s massive book, the story continues the mythic quest of Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who seeks safety in the desert after powerful royals betray his family. Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken join the sprawling cast of Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgård.

The Nigerian men’s team, led Quadri Aruna, also had Omotayo Olajide, Amadi Omeh and Taiwo Mati in their ranks.

For the women’s team event, Nigeria had a smooth ride to the final with a convincing 3-0 win over South Africa in the semis, while the Egyptian ladies, like their male counterparts, had a jolly ride to the final, where they will face an Offiong Edem-led Nigerian side.

In their last meeting at Rabat 2019, Egypt prevailed in the men’s event to dethrone Nigeria, while the Egyptians have dominated the women’s event in the last three editions of the continent’s showpiece sports spectacle.

Meanwhile, South Africa made history in the women’s event as the Danisha Patel-inspired side claimed their first ever medal at the African Games after settling for a bronze medal with an all-important quarter-final win over hosts Ghana.

The quarter-final win over Ghana was what Patel needed to become the first South African player to lead the female team to a medal at the African Games.

Leke Oyede’s side got off to a great start on Thursday with a draw against their recent fierce rivals Tanzania, but the third meeting between the two sides could not be concluded due to rain.

Meanwhile, Namibia are currently leading the group, one point ahead of Nigeria and Tanzania.

The 17th-placed side in the ICC rankings took a big scalp off the highest-ranked team in Africa, South Africa (5) by one run in DLS method.

The Namibians had posted 89 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs before the weather also threatened the game. In the second innings, South Africa had 29 runs for the loss of four wickets in six overs and they fell short in the application of the method designed to calculate the target score for the chasing team.

Cricket is being played at the African Games for the first time since the continental showpiece started in 1965.

The World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, has suspended the accreditation of South Africa’s Bloemfontein Anti-Doping Laboratory, the only accredited laboratory in Africa, for “multiple non-conformities” with international standards.

They announced it had suspended the accreditation of Africa’s only accredited anti-doping laboratory from March 1, due to “multiple non-compliances” to meet international standards. In a statement, WADA said it had suspended the accreditation of the South African Anti-Doping Laboratory in Bloemfontein for up to six months.

The Bloemfontein laboratory had already been placed under some restrictions in September last year, while other anti-doping activities were allowed to continue.

However, WADA said that experts had advised the agency to suspend the facility’s accreditation due to “multiple non-conformities with the International Standard for Laboratories”. WADA said the Bloemfontein laboratory had accepted the suspension, which came into effect on 1 March.

“The suspension … prohibits the laboratory from conducting any anti-doping activities, including the analysis of urine and blood samples, with the exception of analyses related to the haematology module of the Athlete Biological Passport,” WADA said in a statement.

They said the laboratory will be allowed to apply for reinstatement once it has demonstrated that all identified “non-conformities” have been addressed.

As a result, testing must be conducted at another accredited laboratory during the suspension period. Samples awaiting analysis, samples undergoing confirmation procedures, and any samples for which an Adverse Analytical Finding has been reported must be sent to another WADA-accredited laboratory for analysis.

Madrid draw Leipzig to reach Champions League quarters

0

Real Madrid scraped through into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 1-1 second-leg draw against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, progressing 2-1 on aggregate.

The record 14-time champions were far below their best but did just enough over the two legs of the last-16 clash to edge out their Bundesliga opponents.

Despite Leipzig shading the game, Vinicius Junior opened the scoring in the 65th minute after being set up well by Jude Bellingham.

Willi Orban quickly levelled for the visitors but they could not find a second goal to force extra-time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his team suffered and did not approach the game well mentally.

Ancelotti warned his players before the game they needed to be at their best to progress and showed his cautious side by playing four midfielders behind Bellingham and Vinicius.

The Italian brought Aurelien Tchouameni forward into defensive midfield, also deploying Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde and Toni Kroos, as he looked to protect the 1-0 first-leg lead.

However Ancelotti’s gameplan stunted Madrid’s own attacking game without completely stifling Leipzig’s.

“It was not our best day, but we have to be happy because the objective is complete,” Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez told Newsmen.

“When things don’t go as you want, you have to battle, to fight, to play games like today’s that make you grow and learn.”

The German side had the better of the first half, albeit without carving out clear chances until just before the break.

Eguavoen not Eagles interim coach – NFF

President of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, has denied reports that Austin Eguavoen has been appointed interim head coach of the Super Eagles following the exit of Jose Peseiro.

After guiding Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, Portuguese Peseiro confirmed his departure as coach of the Eagles after his contract officially expired last Thursday.

Immediately after Peseiro penned his farewell message, Eguaveon, the 58-year-old former Eagles coach, was immediately reported to have taken charge of the three-time African champions on an interim contract until the football governing body appointed a permanent coach for the team.

However, when the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau was asked if Eguavoen was handed the Eagles job, he replied, “No.”

Eguavoen had coached the team to a bronze medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, before serving in interim capacity in 2010, after the departure of Lars Lagerback.

He again took charge of the team in 2021 after German Gernot Rohr was relieved of his job, and took the squad to the last 16 of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, before stepping down from his position as interim coach after archrivals Ghana forced Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Abuja to qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup on the away goal rule.

African Games: 358 Athletes Represent Nigeria In 25 Sports In Ghana

0

World record holder in the 100m hurdles event, Tobiloba Amusan, is arguably the biggest name on the roster.

The stage is set for the 13th African Games which officially begins on Friday, 8 March, in Accra, Ghana.

As the Crème de la crème of African athletes converge on Ghana for what is fondly referred to as the continent’s version of the Olympic Games, Nigeria is ready to make its mark with a contingent of 358 athletes competing across 25 different sports.

According to the Public Relations Officer for the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC), Tony Nezianya, the athletes, officially accredited on Monday, will be spread across various venues in Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, all vying for glory on the continental stage.

Breakdown

Leading the charge with 50 athletes, Nigeria will be looking to dominate on the track and field. World record holder in the 100m hurdles event, Tobiloba Amusan, is arguably the biggest name on the roster as she will be looking to extend her unrivalled dominance on the continent.

Ruth Usoro, Favour Ofili and Ese Brume are all also among the athletes listed to represent Nigeria in Ghana.

Though just with the prospect of only two medals, the male and female football teams boast of the country’s second-largest contingent with 20 players each.

The Flying Eagles and Falconets will be representing Nigeria.

At the last African Games in Rabat, Morocco, Nigeria won gold in the female category while settling for silver in the male football category.

Indeed football is one of the sports where Nigeria is expected to be among the strong contenders.

Also, a sizeable contingent of 32 athletes will be representing Nigeria in the hockey event.

Other sports with a significant Nigerian presence include rugby (16 athletes) badminton (12 athletes), wrestling (14 athletes), and judo (10 athletes).

Meanwhile, Nigeria will be represented by just four players in the female 3X3 basketball event.

Though this variation of basketball requires three players on the court unlike the conventional basketball game that requires five players always on the court, Nigeria is featuring an extremely slim squad with just one extra player.

The quartet in Nigeria’s extremely slim 3X3 squad are Gbihi Cynthia, Onianwa Isioma, Agba Agatha and Donanu Lawrence.

From individual events like weightlifting and swimming to team sports like volleyball and rugby, Nigeria’s diverse participation across 25 sports highlights the nation’s commitment to challenging for glory in Ghana.

With a slightly slimmer contingent of 311 athletes at the last African Games held in Rabat, Morocco in 2019, Team Nigeria finished second on the final medals table with 127 medals (46 gold, 33 silver and 48 bronze).
