Boniface, Ndidi Near Full Fitness

0

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has revealed that Victor Boniface is edging closer to returning after an injury that has kept him out of action for three months.

Boniface has been outstanding for Bayer Leverkusen since he joined from Belgian club Royale Union SG last summer.

Following his injury, he had to undergo surgery, and that has kept him out of action since the turn of the year. Since his surgery, Boniface has frequently shared pictures of himself during physiotherapy sessions.

Similarly, Leicester City’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has revealed that Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, is nearing full fitness after picking up an injury in December,

“Wilf is still out and that is all. He has already started to do some sessions with us, but part of the session, not all. Hopefully next week he can complete the session with us, which means he starts to be available. Hopefully, we can have Wilf back because, as you know, he is an important player for us,” the Italian manager said.

Dangote Advocates Knowledge-Based Economy In Nigeria

0

Africa’s billionaire, Aliko Dangote has advocated the need for Nigeria to transition from resource-based economy to knowledge-based economy in order to join industrialised nations.

The President of Dangote Conglomerate and Kano born Industrialist made the call while delivering a paper titled “Role of the private sector in building a sustainable knowledge economy in Nigeria” at the 38th Convocation lecture of the Bayero University Kano, North West Nigeria.

Represented by Engr. Mansir Ahmed, Dangote said, countries like South Korea, India, China and the Asian tigers who institutionalised knowledge economy are now reaping the benefits of such initiatives.

According to him, “Given the tremendous benefits that knowledge economy offers, it is vital that Nigeria makes the transition from a resource – based economy to knowledge – base economy.

Dangote noted that, “the World Bank states that for Nigeria to make the transition to knowledge economy, it must pay attention to the business environment, education and skills, innovation systems and information communication infrastructure.

“A major challenge in transitioning to knowledge economy for Nigeria is the quality of the Nigerian worker. The quality of human assets matters a lot in the operations of a firm. Our educational system which produces most of the human assets working  in various firms in Nigeria needs to be modified to yield the desired results.

The system as presently constituted produces graduates who may have excellent qualifications but lack the necessary skills to perform optimally. We have thousand of graduates on a yearly basis but selecting those with the required skills is often a tough task. The educational system should incorporate findings from the research institutions in their programmes as well as relevant management skills that would equip students for excellence after studies.

“Our universities in partnership with private sector players, and necessary support from government should establish innovation or technology hubs. BUK for instance, can collaborate with private sector (KAPEDI) with the full support of the Kano State government to upgrade and formalise the informal telephone market at the farm centre in Kano into a real technology entrepreneurship hub – as the Lagos State Government is reported to be doing with the Ikeja computer village.”

Aliko Dangote said, as part of his contribution to the growth of knowledge economy in Nigeria, Dangote Group  established the Aliko Dangote Foundation with an endowment of $1.25 billion to contribute to socio-economic development especially in the areas of education, health and empowerment, and currently working on a partnership arrangement with the Kano State government to upgrade and equip the state owned Aliko Dangote Modern Skills acquisition centre to train youths in various vocations while plans were underway to establish a state of art of the university of technology as well as a specialist hospital.

The Vice Chancellor Bayero University Kano BUK, Prof. Sagir Abbas said, the establishment of Dangote school in the institution has added a lot of value to BUK as it has produced thousands of Post Graduate.

PH-Aba Train Services To Begin Operation In March

0

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Saturday says the train services on Port Harcourt to Aba route will start operation by the end of March.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Port Harcourt-Aba rail project is part of the larger Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railroad project initiated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhiria disclosed this in Port Harcourt after leading a delegation to test-run the reconstruction of the Eastern Narrow Gauge Rail Line.

He said workers were currently putting finishing touches on the tracks to ensure that full train operation could begin within the month.

“I am impressed with what I saw today, especially being able to ride the locomotive and waggon on the tracks.

“Last time we visited, we could not use the train because the contractor said it was not proper to run on the train due to imbalance of the tracks.

“The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, has directed that the Port Harcourt route be connected to rail as well as initiate the linkage of Onne Port,” he said.

Okhiria expressed confidence that the contractor would complete the ‘tampering’ of the railroad within two weeks, preceding the targeted three weeks for the train services to resume.

Abuja-Kaduna train services to resume November – FG

“We are pushing the contractor to make the track safe by deploying semi-automatic signalling of the machine points rather than manual operation.

“Despite resource challenges, the contractors are doing their best, and our goal is to achieve this within the next two weeks.

“With this, we aim to commence passenger train services, hopefully within March, and fully resume transporting people from Port Harcourt to Aba by the end of March,” he assured.

The managing director said the project design team had started designing a rail track to connect the Port Harcourt-Aba railroad line to the Onne seaport.

He stated that NRC had begun collaborating with the port’s terminal manager and leading engineers to ensure a smooth project delivery.

“The initial design has been done and handed over to us. We look at it, make corrections, and seek approval. Once approved, work will commence,” he added.

Regarding transport fares, Okhiria mentioned that due to the current high cost of diesel, commuters might have to pay higher fares than what was obtainable before.

He said if NRC could not cover 100 per cent fuel costs, the corporation would aim to generate at least 50 per cent from passengers to sustain operations.

“Additionally, we will assess the conditions of the roads with the intent to cover at least 50 per cent of the road costs.

“The government is working with relevant security agencies to ensure adequate security of the rain line and the linkage of security devices from the trains to the control room.

“Communities should protect what the government is putting in place for us. We are striving to ensure that people who come on the train are safe,” he said.

Okhiria cautioned traders against conducting business on the rail lines, as the trains would no longer slow down for them to remove their goods before passing.

He said that the trains were scheduled to run according to fixed times across all railroads in the country.

3-Week Repair Work On Long Bridge Begins Monday- FG

0

The federal ministry of works has announced that, starting from Monday, March 4, 2024, repair work will commence on the damage expansion joints on the Long Bridge along Lagos-Sagamu Expressway.

The repair work which is planned to last for 21 days-March 4-25, 2024- will be done simultaneously on the two carriageways of the bridge, that is, in and out bounds.

Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Seeking An End To Long-Time Gridlock

The federal controller of works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha who gave this notice in a statement on Saturday, said that as a result of this development, “traffic leaving and entering Lagos through the Long Bridge would be narrowed to two lanes on both sides of the Bridge.”

This, she explained, was to enable the contractor handling the repair work to commence work on the other two lanes of the carriageways.

This means that motorists who commute to Lagos or Ibadan on that route have to brace up for hard times that will involve longer travel times and unpleasant driving experience in and out of Lagos.

However, Kesha has advised motorists on that route to be patient and adhere to lane discipline on both approaches to the bridge and around its narrowed sections, assuring that the earth road beside the Shagamu-bound carriageway will be made motorable to serve as a complementary road.

“Other road users are advised to use alternative routes,” she said, pleading with them to cooperate with the traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic and ensure hitch-free movements to minimize discomfort during the repair period.

Kesha thanked the motoring public for their continued cooperation and understanding in these days of frequent movement disruptions on federal highways, pleading with the affected road users to note that all inconveniences are highly regretted.

The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has summoned the Chief Executive of Binance Holding Limited, Richard Teng, over alleged terrorism financing and money laundering.

chairman of the Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, on Friday, at a panel, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the management of Binance Holdings LTD., to appear before the committee on or before March 4, 2024.

Binance, an online exchange where users trade cryptocurrencies, has been flagged by the Central Bank of Nigeria to have been involved in money laundering amongst other things.

SEC Declares Binance illegal, says Nigerians Investing at own Risks

Onwusibe, however, warned that the committee will be forced to invoke the constitutional powers vested in the committee to take appropriate measures if Binance Holdings fails to heed the summon.

He decried the refusal of the Chief Executive of Binance Holding Limited, Teng, to appear after a series of invitations to brief the committee relating to the total disregard for extant laws governing business and financial operations in the country.

The committee had summoned the Managing Director of Binance, in a letter dated December 12 2023 and signed by its chairman, Onwusibe requesting a hearing on December 18, 2023.

Onwusibe, while restating the resolve of the committee to fight financial crimes maintained that “the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has empowered us to protect Nigerians from financial crimes, especially by foreign companies.

“We also have to protect and defend the country’s finances, especially now that the country is nose-diving into recession. The allegations of terrorism financing, money laundering and tax evasion amongst others leveled against Binance are damning enough.

“At this material time, we need all the tax dollars and to block the leaks and channels to financing terror.”

He added, “It is also our duty to do everything in our power to protect Nigerian investors from predatory firms, and no distraction and manipulation can stop us.

“You cannot run a company with over 10 million Nigerians on your platform without paying tax and having a physical office where Nigerians can lodge their complaints when they experience any challenge with your service. The era of exploitation is over and all culprits must be held accountable.”

If Netherlands Don’t Call Me, I Will Play For Nigeria – In-Form Bologna Forward Joshua Zirkzee Declares

0

In-form Bologna forward, Joshua Zirkzee is a hot commodity in Europe at the moment with top clubs jostling for his signature, and so has a decision to make.

Same decision awaits at International level, as he is eligible to represent Netherlands and Nigeria. In a recent interview that has sparked discussions, the forward declared he will choose Nigeria only if Netherland aren’t calling.

Joshua Zirkzee said: “It’s not easy to say. If the Netherlands aren’t calling, then I’ll choose Nigeria. Are they even calling? Maybe. Nigeria is not a country that you just choose because you cannot play for your homeland.

” The competition there for attackers is perhaps just as great as in the Dutch team. Nigeria has Boniface from Leverkusen and Osimhen from Napoli. And they have many more attackers,” the 22-year-old added.

A brief yet decorated club career has seen Joshua Zirkzee win the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, DFB Pokal, and the DFL Super Cup.

Zirkzee, aged 22, rose to prominence in the German Bundesliga during the 2019/2020 season with Bayern Munich, where he achieved the treble under the guidance of Hansi Flick. Since then, he has been loaned out to Parma and Anderlecht before securing a permanent transfer to Bologna in the summer of 2022.

His stellar form this season has sparked discussions about his potential inclusion in Ronald Koeman’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. Zirkzee has been a standout performer for Bologna, contributing nine goals and four assists.

Born on May 22, 2001, Zirkzee has a Nigerian mother and a Dutch father. Although he has represented the Netherlands from the U-15 to the U-21 level, he is yet to make an appearance for the senior team.

Zirkzee has expressed his preference for the Dutch national team, stating that playing in the Euro 2024 tournament with Ronald Koeman’s squad would fulfill a lifelong dream.

“My dream has always been the Dutch national team. However, the European Championships is not necessarily a crossroad. If that doesn’t happen then, I’ll look further. I’d be grateful if it did happen and if not, I have to make sure they call me. You hope to be there one day,” the former Bayern Munich man said.

As Bologna currently sits in 4th place in the Italian Serie A table, Zirkzee and his teammates are focused on securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, with only two points separating them from 5th-placed Atalanta.
