FIFA Denies Rumors Of Blue Card Introduction In Football

0

In response to widespread speculation, FIFA has issued a statement refuting rumors of the introduction of blue cards into elite football competitions.

The governing body clarified that there are no plans to implement such a disciplinary measure, labeling the reports as “incorrect and premature.”

The concept of a blue card, which has garnered significant attention within the football community, was believed to introduce a new disciplinary system potentially affecting player conduct during matches.

However, FIFA’s statement dismisses these notions, highlighting a notable disparity between public discourse and the organization’s official position on the matter.

FIFA emphasized that any potential trials of the blue card system would be conducted cautiously and limited to lower levels of competition. This indicates a cautious approach to experimenting with new disciplinary mechanisms, prioritizing the integrity and flow of the game, especially at elite levels.

The organization intends to provide further clarification on this topic at the upcoming International Football Association Board (IFAB) Annual General Meeting scheduled for March 2.

This meeting serves as a crucial platform for discussing and deciding on football laws, and FIFA’s stance on the blue card issue is expected to be addressed definitively.

FIFA’s prompt response underscores its commitment to maintaining existing disciplinary frameworks while remaining open to innovation in a controlled manner.

The organization aims to strike a balance between preserving football’s traditional values and exploring ways to enhance fairness and sportsmanship.

As the football community awaits further details at the IFAB meeting, stakeholders will be eager to hear FIFA’s stance not only on the blue card but also on other potential regulatory amendments and innovations in the sport.

Defeat To Nigeria Difficult For South Africa’s Coach, Broos To Take

0

South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos feels his side played better against Nigeria in their semi-finals encounter which they lost 4-2 on penalties in the  Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

The Bafana Bafana came back from a goal down to take the game to penalties but ended up losing.

Reacting to their defeat, Broos explained his side played much better and deserved to win the game.

“Football can be hard sometimes, when you see the performance of my team today, and then there is penalties, and then you lose the penalties and you are not in the finals, it’s hard to accept that because we play very good game today.

“I think we were the best team in the first half, we got the best chances, Nigeria didn’t have any chance. Second half they have few chances which resulted in a goal and we changed something tactically, and we could comeback,” he said.

He added,” We created more chances which means if we had scored, we would have been in the final and not Nigeria.

The Belgian tactician hailed his team for what has been a great tournament for them.

“It’s a big disappointment for everyone, we believe we played a very good game, not just today but throughout the tournament.  I’m proud of my players, the disappointment is this but the proudness is that,” he concluded.

South Africa will now face D.R Congo in the third place playoff on Saturday, February 10

Nwabali Praises Team Instead of Self After MOM Performance Against South Africa

Nigeria’s penalty shootout hero Stanley Nwabali was quick to deflect personal praise onto his teammates after steering the Super Eagles to reach the AFCON final.

Nwabali saved two crucial spotkicks and earned the Man of the Match award as Nigeria edged South Africa 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Bouake on Wednesday night.

Despite earning rave reviews for his shootout excellence, the humble keeper highlighted Nigeria’s team ethic.

“It has been a good team performance throughout this tournament. I really appreciate the management and coaches,” said Nwabali.

The Chippa United stopper praised head coach Jose Peseiro in particular. Nwabali was delighted when Peseiro visited him in South Africa prior to AFCON, calling it a huge motivational factor.

“When the coach informed me he was coming to visit, for me it was one of the biggest things. A coach to come visit was a motivation. When he said he was coming I was really pleased,” Nwabali remarked.

This humility and modesty has endeared Nwabali to Nigerian fans during a fairytale tournament.

His penalty heroics against South Africa will be remembered for generations, etching his name into Nigerian folklore.

Yet for Nwabali, it is all about the team. As Nigeria prepare for the final against Cote d”Ivoire or DR Congo, their unwavering spirit could prove the difference.

Nwabali embodies this spirit, deflecting praise and driving standards higher. “These guys have really guided me a lot throughout this tournament, and I feel so happy,” he said.

Nigeria Versus Cote d’Ivoire: Again Two Opponents At Group Stage Meet In The Final

0

Cote d’Ivoire beat Congo DR 1-0 to get to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations. They will now meet Nigeria  in the final match on Sunday.  Both teams had met in the group stages. It will be the fourth time Nigeria will be facing a team they met at the group stage in the final.

It happened in 1988 when they drew 1-1 with Cameroon in Group B at Rabat and then face the same team in the final match

They played Algeria in the group match in 1990 and again in the final.

They did the same in 2013 when they faced Burkina Faso at the group stage and then in the final match.

For Cote d’Ivoire, they become the second team after Nigeria to lose by a four goal margin at the group stage and then get to the title match.

Nigeria lost 5-1 to Algeria at the group stage and then navigated to the final to play Algeria again. Cote d’Ivoire lost 4-0 at the group stage and are now in the final.

Cote d’Ivoire will face Nigeria in the final match of the 2023 AFCON after a 1-0 semi-final win over DR Congo on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.

Cote d’Ivoire clinched a spot in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations following a hard-fought 1-0 win against DR  Congo.

Their triumph sets the stage for an exciting final showdown against Nigeria, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

This final match between Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria carries additional significance as both teams previously clashed during the group stages of the tournament.

Remarkably, this will mark the fourth occasion in history that Nigeria will face a team they encountered in the group stage in the final match of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The first instance occurred in 1988 when Nigeria drew 1-1 with Cameroon in Group B at Rabat before facing the same team in the final match.

This pattern repeated in 1990 when Nigeria faced Algeria in the group stage and subsequently met them again in the final. The trend continued in 2013 when Nigeria encountered Burkina Faso during the group stage and later squared off against them in the final match.

Additionally, Cote d’Ivoire has made history by becoming the second team after Nigeria to advance to the title match despite suffering a four-goal deficit in the group stage.

Nigeria experienced a similar scenario in 1990 when they lost 5-1 to Algeria in the group stage but managed to reach the final to face Algeria once more.

Similarly, Cote d’Ivoire faced a 4-0 defeat in the group stage but has successfully progressed to the final.

Jose Peseiro On Course For 1st Ever Career Silverware

Portuguese coach, Peseiro Vitor dos Santos Peseiro exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations as he has now guided Nigeria to the title match of the Africa Cup of Nations.

His antecedents did not suggest this would happen as Nigeria will now face Cote d’Ivoire in the final match on Sunday.

Prior to now, the Super Eagles under him had been on a steady loss in relevance as the once most fancied team in Africa could not hold assert itself even in contest with far lower teams like Lesotho and Zimbabwe among others.

The pedigree of Peseiro did not support a dream of his leading Nigeria to glory in Afcon.

He had only previously handled two lowly-rated national teams – Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Peseiro’s other jobs were being assistant to other coaches and handling clubs in the fourth-tier Portuguese league.

As a player, he was a second-tier striker in Portugal. As he said in an interview on UK’s Sky Sport: “I did not play at a high level.”

His coaching career took a turn after promotion to the top flight with Nacional. A job offer set him on a different trajectory.

Legendary Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz  made him his assistant at Real Madrid in 2003. That was Jose Peseiro’s biggest moment.

Peseiro was taking sessions with Raul, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, with Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo. “Until then, I was afraid. Never before had I shared a dressing room with big players. But it was not difficult because they are so smart. It was fantastic.” The experience lasted only one season.

In his playing career, he never won any silverware. So also had been in his coaching career that started in 1992 with União de Santarém in Portugal.

Nigeria defeated South Africa 4-2 on penalties to reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. SportsRation reports.

Regulation and extr-time ended 1-1 with both teams converting spot-kicks to go all the way in Boauake.

Nigeria took the lead in the 65th minute when skipper William Troost-Ekong scored from the spot after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the box.

Nigeria started the game as favourites to win the AFCON semi-final in Boauke but found the opening exchanges tight with Bafana Bafana posing a serious threat on the counter-attack.

The best chance of the first half fell to South Africa but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was alert to push a way a goal-bound effort to keep the Eagles level.

First half ended goalless with Hugo Broos tutored Bafana Bafana the most comfortable with the score.

In the second-half, Nigeria resumed pressure and got due reward when Victor Osimhen powered his way into the penalty area only to be brought down by a South African defender.

William Troost-Ekong took responsibility for the spot-kick and fired past penalty specialist Ronwen Williams, who agonisingly saw the ball pass under his body into the net in the 65th minute.

That goal looked like it was taking the Eagles to the AFCON final until a stoppage time penalty kick was awarded to South Africa following a foulby substitute Alhassan Yusuf. Mokoena beat Nwabali from the spot to send the game to extra-time.

After extra-time failed to produce a goal, the match was taken to penalties with Nigeria’s goalkeeper the hero with two saves to inspire a 4-2 shootout win for the Eagles.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the second semi-final game between tournament hosts, Ivory Coast and Dr Congo in the final on Sunday.

The Eagles are eyeing a fourth Africa Cup of  Nations title.

Egypt Name Record Scorer Hossam Hassan As New Coach

0

Egypt named Hossam Hassan as their new coach on Tuesday, with the team’s all-time leading scorer finally landing his dream job following the sacking of Portuguese Rui Vitoria.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) made the announcement in a brief statement, saying Hassan’s twin brother, Ibrahim Hassan, had also been appointed as Egypt’s team director.

Although the EFA initially said they were considering foreign candidates for the role, they swiftly brought in Hassan as a replacement for Vitoria, who was dismissed on Sunday after the Pharaohs exited the Africa Cup of Nations at the last-16 stage.

Hassan has made no secret of his desire to take up the job on numerous occasions, complaining that he was often overlooked despite being sufficiently qualified.

Critics have cited his fiery temper as a reason for him previously failing to land the job, as he has had various disciplinary problems.

In 2016, he was briefly remanded in custody for running after and attacking a photographer following the end of a local league game while in charge of Al Masry. Most recently, he was fined for breaking the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) monitor during a league game in early 2023.

Although Hassan’s managerial stints have not yielded any trophies, he was often credited with helping unfancied teams punch above their weight. He has guided a handful of Egyptian clubs, including Cairo giants Zamalek, since beginning his coaching career in 2008, several months after he hung up his boots.

The 57-year-old enjoyed a decorated playing career, in which he won numerous titles with Cairo clubs Al Ahly and Zamalek. At international level, he won three Cup of Nations titles with Egypt and spearheaded their attack at the 1990 World Cup.

He is Egypt’s all-time leading scorer with 68 goals, 14 ahead of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.

Day Of Reckoning As Football Rivalry Is Reignited With Nigeria-South Africa Clash

0

When the Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana clash on Wednesday in Bouake in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations, one of the major football rivalries in the continent will be revived.

As Nigeria and South Africa get at each other’s jugular it will be a frenetic Africa Cup of Nations semi-final attrition. The Super Eagles are aiming at getting their fourth title after last winning 11 years ago in South Africa just as Bafana Bafana crave for a second, the 24th anniversary of their solitary win being about this time.

Nigeria won the African title in 1980, 1994 and 2013, while South Africa won when they hosted in 1996. Wednesday’s clash is the first of a trilogy that fate had instituted for both sides as they are also in the same World Cup qualifying pool and thus have two others clashes.

Fixtures of both have always been tension soaked, although the pendulum more than often swings in Nigeria’s favour. In 14 past clashes, Nigeria won seven and lost only twice to South Africa. The first loss being a friendly match to celebrate the legendary Nelson Mandela in November 2004 and the second being in Uyo

when the Super Eagles fielded a half-strength side in their 2-0 home loss in 2017 but still came top in the qualifying series for the 2019 edition.

It is a rarity for Nigeria end an Africa Cup of Nations finals empty –handed as they had been to the semifinals in 15 of their previous 19 outings. This is just the first time South Africa are getting to that stage in 24 years and overall, this year is just the fourth time they are getting to the semi-finals.
