The Queen Elizabeth Quay Bridge is a pedestrian and cycling suspension bridge which is located over the Swan River in the central core of the capital and largest city of the State of Western Australia, Perth, within the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Since Elizabeth Quay started receiving great attention from the visitors coming to this grandiose city, the Quay is considered to be a tourist attraction with the efforts from the West Australian Government to revitalize the central part of the city.
Nowadays, this should not be missed whenever here, especially with its other numerous attractions.
This unique and quite amazing bridge is part of the recreational route along the Swan River where it provides a connecting link between the promenades, the island and Barrack Street Jetty.
Officially unveiled to the general public on 29 January 2016, this amazing structure is 120 meters (394 feet) long, 5 meters (16 feet) wide and with height of about 22 meters (72 feet) high, offering 360 degrees views across the gorgeous Swan River.
There are two 45 meters (148 feet) spans that connect in the middle, and its uniquely designed arches are sweeping gracefully towards the river while resting on concrete piers.
Designed by Arup Associates with very careful thoughts on how to balance everything, and the result is actually mesmerizing, having in mind that the bridge allows for continuous movement of pedestrians and cyclists around the Elizabeth Quay, and it also is like a mirror of each of its sides.
All in all, Queen Elizabeth Quay Bridge is certainly one of the greatest architectural landmarks of Perth which changed the way locals and visitors enjoyed this part of Western Australia’s capital city.
The Design
Arup was the design lead consultant for the Elizabeth Quay pedestrian and cyclist bridge and delivered a lot more than just structural engineering for the feature arch and suspension bridge.
The bridge spans from the western Williams Landing and the new island in the east, providing increased opportunities for people to interact with the Swan River.
It is 22m high, 5m wide and suspended over the inlet with a 5.2m current mean clearance.
Two 45m spans connect in the middle, with the bridge’s arches sweeping down towards the water to rest on concrete piers supported on piles socketed into the rock bed.
Arup’s engineers and architects worked together to calculate everything from how to balance the dramatic impact of the bridge’s leaning arches with its structural function, to how to minimise wind vibration.
Using parametric modelling, Arup optimised the geometry of the pedestrian pathway to overcome design constraints, including the range of different heights required at different sections of the walkway.

Remember when we travelled to ibadan, nigeria’s south west from lagos through the standard guage line? That was 2022. It was such a thrilling experience sitting by the window; seeing when you’ve been to on foot or car.
Now today on space.com, let’s see some train journeys around the world in 2023.
Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train, Indonesia
Indonesia’s first high-speed railway opened in 2023, two years later than planned, slashing journey times from Jakarta to the central Javan city of Bandung from over three hours to just 36 minutes.
The $5.1 billion railway will revolutionize connections between two huge metropolitan regions – Greater Jakarta with around 32 million citizens and Bandung, which now has more than eight million inhabitants.
Developed by PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China, a joint venture of four Indonesian state-owned companies, and China Railway International, a subsidiary of China Railway Group (CREC) on the same principles as China’s astonishing high-speed rail network, the 142.3-kilometer-long standard gauge line has a maximum operating speed of 350 kilometers (217 miles) per hour.
Almost 83 kilometers (50 miles) of the route is elevated on viaducts above urban areas and farmland.
Approximately 11 CR400AF Fuxing high-speed trains with room for 555 second class, 28 first class and 18 “VIP class” passengers have also been supplied by China.
Up to 44,000 passengers are expected to travel on the trains during the first year of operation.
European Sleeper
With demand for overnight trains predicted to explode in Europe in the second half of the 2020s, several start-ups have unveiled plans to introduce exciting new routes. But the Belgian-Dutch cooperative European Sleeper is closest to hitting the rails.
The company is set to launch its Brussels-Amsterdam-Berlin-Prague route in 2023, assuming it can secure and refurbish suitable carriages in time.
European Sleeper is partnering with RegioJet, a highly successful private travel company from the Czech Republic already running daytime and overnight trains across central and eastern Europe, to provide the service.
Linking four of Europe’s most-visited tourist hotspots, seats and berths on the train will be in high demand, especially in the peak summer months for Interrail/Eurail backpackers.
Its renovated and modernized carriages, aimed at travelers on different budgets, are to feature sleeping compartments, couchette beds and reclining seats with modern features such as charging points and Wi-Fi aimed at travelers on different budgets.
European Sleeper is also working with holiday company Sunweb to run new overnight trains from the Netherlands and Belgium to French ski resorts this winter and a route to the French Riviera from summer 2023.
The $3.1 billion railway is to link Dujiangyan with a panda reserve and the Mount Siguniang scenic tourist area in Sichuan province.
Much like its Swiss counterparts, the meter-gauge railway will scale steep mountain sections with the assistance of a rack-and-pinion system mounted between the rails.
The first section is expected to open at the end of 2023, with full operation in 2026, subsequently reducing the 129-kilometer journey from Dujiangyan to Siguniangshan Town from five hours to 120 minutes.
Another impressive civil engineering achievement by China’s rail industry, the line includes 11 stations, 25 bridges totaling 35 kilometers in length and 86 kilometers of tunnels.
The four-car driverless trains are fitted with 145 seats in three classes, with large curved panoramic windows, advanced automation, monitoring and fault diagnostics supported by 5G and satellite navigation.
Tren Maya, Mexico
Tren Maya is a 1,525-kilometer (948 mile) system of new and revitalized railways designed to connect Caribbean tourist resorts such as Cancun with cities, cultural sites and lesser-known destinations inland.
Construction on the initial route from Palenque in Chiapas State via the historic city of Mérida and the world-famous Mayan site at Chichén Itzá to Cancun began in 2020.
Later phases will link Cancun to the resort of Playa del Carmen and Tulum, looping back via Bacalar and Xpujil to join the Palenque-Cancun route at Escárcega.
Global transport giant Alstom is supplying 42 modern multiple unit trains, in three different styles, from its Mexican factory in Ciudad Sahagún.
The “Xiinbaal” (walking) standard regular service trains are fitted with large panoramic windows, the “Janal” (eating) restaurant cars showcase regional cuisine, and the “P’atal” (staying) trains are designed for long-distance journeys, with comfortable cabins for both daytime and overnight travel.
With exterior color schemes inspired by the Mayan art and culture and internal designs influenced by the blue of the Caribbean Sea, the trains will combine tradition and modernity with a strong regional identity.
Switzerland’s GoldenPass Express (GPX)
Switzerland’s newest panoramic train journey was launched on December 11, three years later than scheduled and 150 years after it was first proposed.
The new GoldenPass Express (GPX) directly connects three of the European country’s most important tourist destinations: Montreux, Gstaad and Interlaken, a special route made possible by unique new trains capable of changing the gauge of their wheels and the height of their coach bodies.
GPX passengers can now remain in their comfortable seat throughout the trip, immersing themselves in the ever-changing view through enormous panoramic windows.
The spectacular journey, which takes in some of Europe’s most beautiful lakes, secluded valleys and high mountain passes, cuts across the grain of central Switzerland, following a trade route that has existed since the Middle Ages.
Passengers have a choice of three classes with 28 lucky people per trip experiencing the luxury of a reclining leather seat in Prestige class.
First and Prestige class passengers can also book an at-seat service of locally produced food and drink to enhance the journey.
These stunning new GPX trains bring an added attraction to the Golden Pass route that will likely allow many new visitors to experience this underrated gem of a journey.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has lambasted President Bola Tinubu-led administration over the claims of inheriting a bankrupt government. Obi said the administration has failed to disclose the exact amount it met when former President Muhammadu Buhari handed over the power on May 29, 2023, adding that it lacked transparency and accountability.
The former Anambra governor also lambasted the All Progressives Congress-led government for blaming the predecessor for its failures, as he said ex-leader Buhari did the same in 2015 after former President Goodluck Jonathan passed the baton of power to him.
Obi made this known in a statement posted on his X on Thursday in reaction to President Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu’s claims that the administration met liabilities.
“I just read yesterday, a widely publicized story from the present APC-led Federal Government saying that they inherited a bankrupt nation from their predecessor APC administration. But the story failed to disclose what they inherited which had qualified us for bankruptcy status,” Obi said.
“One major characteristic of responsible governance is transparency and strict accountability. This demands that the government disclose exactly the degree of deficit they inherited. What is inherited should be disclosed to enable the public to know where we are and where we are headed.
“Recall that the previous APC Government made a similar claim in 2015 against the PDP administration that handed over to them without telling the nation what it actually inherited.”
Obi slammed the government for humongous borrowing that had increased the country’s debt relief while the economy has deteriorated making Nigerians grapple with hardship.
“Rather, they took our debt profile from N12.6 trillion in 2015 to N87 trillion in 2023 when they left office without improving on any indices of development: Education, Health, Poverty eradication, and Security,” he said.
“Instead, the condition of the nation on every development index got worse, leading to the present sad state. Nigerians know things are bad, and they experience it daily. What they now want to hear regularly are measurable and verifiable steps to improve the situation.”
“Also, the alarm raised by the government about the bad state of our finances raises questions about the rationale behind some expenditure items in the supplementary budget recently signed into law,” he wrote.
“The present revelation also goes to buttress the argument that I have made since electioneering season that the cost of governance is too high and must be drastically reduced. A bankrupt country should channel every available resource into funding critical development sectors like security, healthcare, education, and eradication of poverty by addressing youth unemployment, not spending in non-essential areas. So, what we expect are measurable and verifiable steps to improve the situation.”
The Labour Party (LP) says it has no plan to merge with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
LP’s spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement on Thursday, said his party just concluded the 2023 presidential election episode and a post mortem was yet to hold.
Ifoh said the way forward for the party has not been discussed and “when we do, Nigerians will be properly informed”.
The LP was reacting to a proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP flag bearer in the February poll, that opposition parties merge to defeat the ruling APC in the next presidential election.
Atiku, on Tuesday, had expressed concerns that Nigeria was moving towards a “one-party dictatorship” state and called on other opposition parties to come together to defeat the ruling APC.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, the LP said Atiku’s call “was only a proposal and every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria and that what we have presently is an autocracy”.
“There was no where in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned.” Ifoh emphasised.
Also, the ruling APC slammed Atiku, over the proposal, saying the ex-VP and his party failed at the polls since 2015 and have failed to offer credible opposition to Nigerians.

About 2m UK households have been forced to turn off their fridges or freezers to save money as they continue to struggle with what many describe as a “frightening” level of hardship.
According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) charity, Nearly half of those households say that since May they have had to disconnect appliances a sign the cost of living crisis was still hurting low-income families,.
The NGO said Millions of families were still resorting to “desperate measures” to cope with rising bills and prices, with four out of five households on universal credit also going without food, turning off the heating, and not replacing worn-out clothing.
The JRF’s latest cost of living crisis tracker survey found that in October a quarter (2.8m) of UK low-income households ran up debt to pay for food, a third sold belongings to raise cash, and one in six had used community “warm rooms”.
The findings come amid concerns among poverty charities that ministers are looking to reduce financial help for low income families at next week’s autumn statement by cutting benefits and winding down cost of living support payments.
The JRF said that although the government had allocated more than £12bn in targeted cost of living support, and inflation has begun to fall, 7.3m households had gone without food and other essentials in the last six months, suggesting the crisis was far from over.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State, says it will review the Appeal Court’s ruling which affirmed Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the March 18 Governorship Election in the state. The party said this in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Hakeem Amode, on Wednesday in Lagos. Amode said the party would not relent in its efforts of taking all necessary measures to promote democracy.
“The party is in the process of reviewing the judgement of the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos, which dismissed the main issues raised by the governorship candidate of our party, Dr AbdulAzeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, on the judgment given by the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
“While we refrain from providing a detailed analysis of the judegment at this juncture, we urge our dedicated supporters to maintain composure and abstain from any activities that may disrupt the harmony and order of our society.
“As a party, we are committed to undertaking a meticulous review of the judgment upon receipt of the Certified True Copy, and subsequently, we will issue precise directives to our legal team,” Amode said.
According to him, there is no doubt that the tenets of democracy are at the core of the party’s values, and that the PDP remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive society that serves the interests of all its citizens.
“We firmly believe that the appropriate avenue for addressing our concerns is through the legal process.
“We are unwavering in our resolve to pursue our case until it reaches a just and lawful resolution.
“We retain utmost confidence in the people of Lagos State, who rightfully deserve the very best.
“Our party is steadfast in its dedication to serving the populace to the fullest extent should the opportunity arise,” the PDP spokesman said.
Displeased with the verdict, on October 13, Jandor filed 34 grounds of appeal challenging the judgement of the tribunal.
But the Court of Appeal on Wednesday dismissed issues raised by the PDP candidate against the judgement of the election tribunal
Four weeks after the Kano State mass wedding, a bride is yet to move to her matrimonial home.
Findings revealed that the couple had a long-time relationship before the marriage was finally knotted last month.
The relationship went sour when the bride’s parents insisted that the groom must provide kayan lefe (a suitcase given to a wife during the wedding) for their daughter.
The groom, Ibrahim Umar, said his bride’s parents had told him that if he did not provide the kayan lefe she would not be moving into his house, even though the kayan lefe was excluded in the mass wedding scheme. He said, “Since they insist on their mission and even persuaded their daughter on that, I will only divorce her when they pay me back some gifts I offered to their daughter.
‘’They must pay me back my N150,000, which I gave as kudin zance, N17,000 for rice and another N65,000 which I gave her to do makeup during the wedding.’’
The wife, Ummulkhair Salisu, could not be reached.
The bride’s father, Malam Salisu, declined to comment on the issue, directing questions to Hisbah officials.
The Director General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Abba Saidu Sufi, said, “We are aware of the issue, but I can tell you that there is no iota of truth in what the groom is accusing the bride’s parents of, but we are doing all that we could to solve the issue amicably.’’
The Kano state government had on October 13 married off 1800 couples in the state under its mass wedding scheme which the government said it was aimed at assisting those that could not afford to marry off their daughters as well as curtailing the sexual abuse among the people of the state.
