NLC, TUC Strike Not In National Interest –Presidency

0

The Presidency has described the nationwide strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress as not in the national interest.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Monday directed all its members to withdraw their services nationwide from Tuesday over an assault on the President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

Strike: NLC, TUC Summon NEC Meeting

The presidency, however said the strike action by the unions was a flagrant disobedience to a court order and a lack of respect for the judiciary.

Accordingly, the government expressed displeasure that the nation’s economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interests of any labour leader.

“This decision by the NLC and TUC, other than being an ego-tripping move, is unwarranted. It is an attempt to blackmail the government by the leadership of the NLC.

“We are still at a loss as to why the NLC and TUC decided to punish a whole country of over 200 million people over a personal matter involving the NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, whose error of judgment led to an assault on him in Owerri while he was planning to incite the workers in Imo State into a needless strike.

“We reiterate that this strike action is illegal, immoral, unjustifiable, and irresponsible,” the statement reads.

According to reports, a court order was issued four days ago which restrained the unions from embarking on a strike. This is after NLC, TUC issued a nationwide strike notice, November 1, 2023 over the assault on the president of NLC, Joe Ajaero.

Hitler’s “Beer-Hall Putsch” fails

On Nov. 8, 1923, Adolf Hitler launched his first attempt at seizing power in Germany with a failed coup in Munich that came to be known as the “Beer-Hall Putsch.”

The Beer Hall Putsch, also known as the Munich Putsch, was a failed coup d’état by Nazi Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP) leader Adolf Hitler, Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff and other Kampfbund leaders in Munich, Bavaria, on 8–9 November 1923, during the Weimar Republic.

Approximately two thousand Nazis marched on the Feldherrnhalle, in the city centre, but were confronted by a police cordon, which resulted in the deaths of 16 Nazis, four police officers, and one bystander.

Hitler escaped immediate arrest and was spirited off to safety in the countryside. After two days, he was arrested and charged with treason.

The putsch brought Hitler to the attention of the German nation for the first time and generated front-page headlines in newspapers around the world.

His arrest was followed by a 24-day trial, which was widely publicised and gave him a platform to express his nationalist sentiments to the nation.

Hitler was found guilty of treason and sentenced to five years in Landsberg Prison, where he dictated Mein Kampf to fellow prisoners Emil Maurice and Rudolf Hess.

On 20 December 1924, having served only nine months, Hitler was released.

Once released, Hitler redirected his focus towards obtaining power through legal means rather than by revolution or force, and accordingly changed his tactics, further developing Nazi propaganda.

0

In its bid to build the capacity of youth towards making them employers of labour, the NNPC Foundation, in partnership with Kudimata Nigeria Limited, a financial education outfit, have trained the Batch C members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in basic financial literacy skills.

The training, which aligned with the objectives of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) scheme of NYSC had its maiden edition featuring Batch B stream in the past months. So far over 118,000 youth corps members have been trained in financial literacy, while about 70,000 are being trained across the 37 NYSC orientation camps in the country.

Speaking during the training, the Managing Director, NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe described financial literacy as not only the bedrock of all successes in the ever-competitive labour market, but a journey towards attaining self-actualization, thereby heralding the trajectory to sustainable prosperity of the nation.

Arukwe, who implored the corps members to leverage the knowledge garnered from the training to avert white collar job syndrome, added that the NNPC Foundation is committed to impacting the youth corps members to become employers of labour.

Addressing unemployment as the greatest problem of young graduates, she said, “We are aware of unemployment as a challenge plaguing young graduates and we recognize the need to empower the youths through capacity building of this magnitude for them to empower the whole nation. This training will help reduce unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria, thereby making the corps members employers of labour.”

In her remarks, the FCT Coordinator, NYSC, Shokpeka Winifred expressed her profound gratitude to both NNPC Foundation and Kudimata Nigeria Ltd for their unwavering support to empower the corps members to enable them to become self-reliant individuals and wealth creators.

Winifred described the training as a platform for young people to learn the best ways of managing their finances, while also grooming them to become good managers of resources.

One of the corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Abuja, Prudence Enema said: “I’m thrilled that the NNPC Foundation took their time to train us on financial literacy, we are aware that financial literacy is very important, and we have learnt a lot on how to multiply our money in order not to suffer in the future.”

Another corps member, Okeke Ugochukwu revealed that the training was worthwhile as the importance of saving and categorization of finances were taught effectively.

The Italians have become the first first-world country to ban synthetic meat citing serious health concerns including the risk of cancer.

Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida told an event organized by the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and attended by EU Agriculture Commissioner over the weekend, making it the first country in the world to do so.

Yesterday, a bill that would ban the production, import and marketing of food produced in laboratories was to be debated in Italy’s lower house.

Organized by ECR in Kilkenny, Ireland, the event entitled “Traditions and Innovation: A Conservative Future for European Farmers” had leading conservative politicians discuss the challenges and opportunities arising from European regulation and collaboration on animal husbandry, agriculture and the green economy.

The minister said Food quality is fundamental and the country cannot agree to a society divided in two, with quality food produced only for the rich elite. Everyone should be able to eat well.

JAMB Welcomes Senate Probe Of Alleged Admission Racketeering In Universities

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it welcomes the decision of the Senate to probe alleged admission racketeering in universities, while expressing optimism that the examination body will be vindicated

Reacting to the development in a statement, the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, commended the Senate for giving the examination body to defend itself over the issue.

Prof. Oloyede, while clarifying a major issue in the allegation, said the affected candidate sat for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and scored 291.

JAMB stated that the girl who applied to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was ranked 241 in the ranking of applicants for the medical programme after all her other academic performances, including post-UTME score were calculated by the institution.

The examination body also revealed that the lady did not apply to change her course after accepting the UNN proposal to change to Medical Laboratory in writing and was offered admission.

JAMB further stated that it never gave the candidate any approval letter for Medicine nor Medical Laboratory, adding that she is doing Medical Laboratory in an arrangement between her and the institution.

It stressed that the university ought to have followed all procedures for admitting candidates by ensuring that they confirmed the quota allocated to them and ranking order, which was ignored under the circumstances.

While assuring the public that the Board and its staff would be vindicated, the examination body expressed delight over the mediating role it has played between candidates and institutions towards ensuring equity and fairness.

Recall that the Senate had agreed to investigate allegations of admission racketeering in the nation’s universities, following a motion moved by Senator Onyeka Nwebonyi (Ebonyi North) who cited the admission travails of one Chinyere Ekwe at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

After Over 50 Years, Earthrise Picture Remains Iconic

0

More than 50 years after it was shot, Earthrise continues to be seen as one of the most iconic environmental photographs ever taken.

On Christmas Eve, 1968 the crew of Apollo 8 captured a spectacular sight as they orbited the Moon: the illuminated Earth appearing above the barren lunar horizon.

The NASA astronauts were awestruck by what they saw.

“Oh my God, look at that picture over there! There’s the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!” Bill Anders shouted at fellow astronaut Jim Lovell. “You got a colour film, Jim? Hand me a roll of colour, quick, would you?”

“That’s a beautiful shot,” said Lovell as Anders clicked the shutter and captured what has become one of the world’s most famous photographs.

The image was coined “Earthrise”. It was the first colour photograph of Earth taken from space and quickly circulated around the world.

The photo is widely credited with propelling the global environmental movement and leading to the creation of Earth Day, an annual event promoting environmental activism and awareness, in 1970.

“It’s just the perfect image,” says Michael Pritchard, programmes director at the Royal Photographic Society in the UK.

“It was a colour and good high-resolution image that could be reproduced really well and it provided a perspective of the Earth that had never been seen before.”

“It clearly showed the Earth from space but also put it into a context that we hadn’t seen before,” he says. “It showed that Earth was this very vulnerable sphere in space.”

In the late 1960s, environmental perspectives and activism were rapidly sweeping across the United States and Europe.

The environmental groups Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace were founded in 1969 and 1971, respectively.

The US government established the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.

‘It was the only colourful thing in the Universe’

Eighteen months after the Apollo 8 astronauts shot Earthrise, 20 million people took to the streets across the US to protest environmental destruction in the first ever Earth Day.

The emissions from travel it took to report this story were 0kg CO2.

The digital emissions from this story are an estimated 1.2g to 3.6g CO2 per page view.

Kathleen Rogers, president of the Earth Day Network, says the Earthrise photo played a pivotal role in encouraging people to take part in environmental activism.

“It gave rise to Earth Day, which now has a billion people participating, and created an environmental movement worldwide,” says Rogers.

The posters for Earth Day in 1970 all featured the Earthrise photo, she says.

Before Earth Day, people talked about how space exploration had made it far clearer how unique we are, adds Rogers.

“Once the photo was published, members of Congress and global leaders all started talking about how fragile the Earth was.

Earthrise highlighted the uniqueness of Earth in that big black universe and it drove home to millions of people how dirty our planet was.”
Pritchard adds that images such as the Earthrise photo can say far more “than pages and pages of reports” from environmental organisations.

“[It highlighted] that the Earth is not something that we can continually take from, that we have to preserve it,” he says.

“That’s where Earthrise’s real strength and importance lies…it was able to sum up so much in just a single image in a way that transcended documents and papers.”

Because of its history and powerful message, the Earthrise photo continues to ignite environmental awareness.

“It shows the Earth that we all live on, a little blue sphere set within this black expanse,” says Pritchard. “It suggests everything from fragility to our uniqueness.”

Both players have been laid off from the team for a while owing to injuries. They are joined by debuntant, Nathan Tella a forward with Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen.

The trio are part of the 23 call-ups by head coach, Jose Santos Peseiro who has also invited goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Olaoluwa Aina, midfielders Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka, and forwards Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi.

The current call-ups will prosecute the first two of Nigeria’s 10 World Cup qualifying matches.

The two matches are the home game next week against Lesotho and that will immediately be followed by an away duel with Zimbabwe.

The other players called up are  goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo, defenders Oluwasemilogo Ajayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel, midfielder Raphael Onyedika and forwards Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface and Terem Moffi.

The 20,000-capacity Huye Stadium, located in the city of Butare which is 135 kilometres south of the Rwandan capital, Kigali, has an artificial turf.

Zimbabwe has adopted Rwanda as home for the qualifiers as no stadium in the southern African nation has been deemed fit to host the FIFA World Cup qualifying games.

Peseiro Set To Hand Bayer Leverkusen Winger, Nathan Tella Debut

0

Bayer Leverkusen winger and new invitee to the Super Eagles, Nathan Tella has told BBC that  it would be “a dream come true” to make his debut for Nigeria in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers this week.

He is one of the 23 call-ups for the first two matches of Nigeria’s lengthy campaign to return to the World Cup.

Born in Lambeth, England, but eligible for Nigeria through his parents, his international future had been the subject of significant speculation since he first began to make an impression in the youth set-up at Arsenal.

“It’s always been about representing Nigeria,” Tella told BBC Sport Africa’s Oluwashina Okeleji.

“My family will be over the moon to watch me fulfill that dream.

“I am proud of my British and Nigerian sides and lucky to have both backgrounds. Of course we have both worlds, but ours is a proper Nigerian home [with] culture, food and tradition.”

Tella was one of the standout performers for Burnley last season as the Clarets earned promotion back to the Premier League, but he returned to parent club Southampton at the end of the campaign.

The forward, who is capable of playing either out wide or through the middle, had 22 goal contributions in the Championship last season and joined Leverkusen in a reported 20m Euros deal in August.

His new side are undefeated at the top of the German Bundesliga after 10 matches and his speed, dribbling and delivery into dangerous areas would, in theory, give the Super Eagles an added dimension in attack.

After missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the West Africans kick off their qualifying campaign for 2026 against Lesotho and Zimbabwe on 16 and 19 November respectively.

Nigeria are expected to come through Group C ahead of the likes of South Africa and Benin, with the group winners guaranteed a spot in Canada, Mexico and the United States after the finals were expanded from 32 to 48 teams.

NPFL 2023/24 Best Players So Far

0

The 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League has witnessed some magic moments and some players have lit up the campaign with inspiring performances as the league enters match-day eight.

Here are some outstanding players so far:

Robert Mizo (Bayelsa United)

Second highest goal scorer in the league last season, Mizo, started the new season from where he stopped last term and he is just three goals shy off his total tally last season. The Bayelsa United striker currently leads the scorers’ chart with six goals in seven games this season and has been crowned the player of the month for September and October following his blistering start to the campaign.

Michael Olalusi (Sunshine Stars)

Every season, there is usually a new star in Akure and home-grown midfielder Olalusi is the one in the spotlight with his brilliant performance for the team so far this season. Even as a midfielder, he is rubbing shoulders with the hottest strikers in the league at the moment with five goals in seven games. He was among the nominees for the September/October LBA Player of the Month Award which was won by Robert Mizo.

Sikiru Alimi (Remo Stars)

After overcoming the knock which kept him out for most part of last season, Alimi is back at Remo Stars and scoring goals for fun. In six games, the former 3SC man has notched five goals. He was also nominated for the September/October LBA Player of the Month Award which was won by Robert Mizo.

Sodiq Ismail (Remo Stars)

Since joining Remo Stars midway through last season, Ismail has proven to be a kind of right full back the league hasn’t seen in years in terms of what he offers offensively. The defender currently sits top of the providers’ chart with five assists in six matches for the Ikenne side. He was also nominated for the LBA Player of the Month Award but he was Remo Stars Player of the Month for October.

Jonathan Alukwu (Sporting Lagos)

The ‘Barbie Boy’ as he is called is also having the time of his life in the league with four goals in the last four matches. The 20-year-old wasn’t on target in Sporting Lagos’ first three games of the season but he hasn’t stopped scoring since opening his account against Remo Stars on match-day four. He added one goal each against Niger Tornadoes, Kwara United and Kano Pillars.

Osayi Kingdom (Doma United)

The only goalkeeper in the mix, Kingdom as his name implies is currently living in a world of his own in the league. He stole the spotlight on match-day seven by providing two assists for Emmanuel Jesam in Doma United’s 3-0 win over Gombe United in the Savannah Derby. After six matches, the promising shot stopper has kept five clean sheets.

Samuel Tiza (Lobi Stars)

Perhaps he picks his games to shine but Tiza comes through for Lobi Stars when it matters most. He has scored two braces this season – against Sunshine Stars on match-day two and Bayelsa United on match-day four – to take his tally to four this season.

Junior Lokosa

Lokosa might have taken some time to tick in terms of goal scoring for Sporting Lagos this season, but he certainly showed why they signed him in their last four games, as he turned up with three goals – two of them against his former side Kano Pillars. Aside from this, Sporting Lagos head coach, Paul Offor has hailed the former league top scorer for his impact on the younger players in the team.

Bello Lookman (Katsina United)

The Chanji Boys might be struggling to find their feet again in the NPFL but Bello is one player who has shown he could be their most important weapon with three goals so far this season. He is among the few players to have scored a brace this season after netting twice against Sunshine Stars on match-day five.

Kazeem Ogunleye (Enugu Rangers)

After seven matches this season, Enugu Rangers are living up to their rejuvenated hype with Ogunleye turning up with three goals against Remo Stars, Kwara United and Heartland in the
process.
