Cairo giants Ahly came strongly in all shortlists announced Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the annual men’s awards.
The CAF awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on 11 December 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco.
According to CAF’s official website, CAF technical experts, African football legends, and selected media representatives from different countries all contributed to selecting the nominees according to their performance in the period between November 2022 and September 2023.
African Champions League holders Ahly will be competing for the Club of the Year award alongside other nine teams.
Ahly’s skipper and goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy was also named among the nominees for the Goalkeeper of the Year award that was introduced by CAF for the first time ever.
Six players of the Cairo giants were also among the nominees for the Interclub Player of the Year award which goes to the best player in the continent.
El-Shennawy will be competing for the prestigious award alongside Hussein El-Shahat, Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim, Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, Ali Maaloul, and Percy Tau.
Egyptian club Pyramids FC duo Mostafa Fathi and Fiston Mayele are also named in the list for the Interclub award.
The Reds, Ahly, were also represented by four players in the race for the African Player of the Year award, as Mohamed El-Shennawy, Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim, and Percy Tau were included in the announced 30-man shortlist.
Liverpool star winger and Egypt skipper Mohammed Salah is also among the prominent names competing for the important prize.
Soccer’s most prestigious individual prize, the Ballon d’Or, will be co-organized by UEFA from next year, giving the European soccer body a global event that traditionally out-ranks FIFA’s own world awards. The deal comes seven years after a previous partnership between the French organizers of the award and world governing body FIFA ended.
From 2024, the Ballon d’Or awards and ceremony will be co-organized by UEFA and Groupe Amaury, which publishes France Football and L’Equipe.
France Football magazine created the Ballon d’Or, which was first awarded in 1956 to England winger Stanley Matthews. For six seasons from 2010 the award was known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or, and ceremonies were held in the world governing body’s home city Zurich.
FIFA has run its own Best Awards since 2016 and previously had an annual world player of the year award since 1991.
The latest edition of the Ballon d’Or was held Monday in Paris with two World Cup winners taking the awards as best player: Lionel Messi won the men’s prize for the eighth time and Aitana Bonmatí took home her first women’s award.
“UEFA will contribute its football expertise, market the global commercial rights and organize the annual awards gala,” it said in a statement.
The relaunch will add new awards for the best coaches in men’s and women’s soccer.
“Together, UEFA and Groupe Amaury aim to enhance the stature and global reach of the awards while fostering a sense of unity and collaboration within the football community,” UEFA said.
The deal will also see UEFA scrap its own player of the year awards, which have traditionally been handed out in August, although it will hand out a player of the season award for each of its club competitions, such as the Champions League and Europa Leauge.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says that the squad must focus on winning every single game after he bagged a late winner at Fulham.
It was a largely frustrating afternoon for the Red Devils and they looked set to walk away from Craven Cottage with just a point but Fernandes scored in stoppage time to claim the spoils.
After the match, he said: “Everyone knows the situation is not the best, we lost the last two games and the performances weren’t too good.
“Today it was a different game and we had to deliver something different and we got the three points which is the most important thing.
“Today is about the team and what everyone does on the pitch.
“It was a game where everyone sacrificed and everyone ran, worked harder and even the goal you could see the reaction of the players trying to get the ball around the box.
“It was a good performance and maybe we could have created more chances but we did still create a lot.
“We have to understand that we can still do better and can deliver much more.
“I think the team understands now that it is about getting results and winning every time we play.”
Scott McTominay thought he had given the visitors an early lead after eight minutes, but his goal was ruled out by VAR.
But the Scotsman kept pushing on the pitch and helped break down a resilient Fulham defence in the end.
He added: “It shouldn’t just be this game and we can’t get too carried away but there’s times where everyone’s against you and you’ve got to do it your own way and come together.
“It’s a building block and I think we did more than enough to win the game in the end.
“We said to each other that the fans pay good money to come and watch us each week and this sport is relentless and we just want to repay them in every single way that we can.
“Things aren’t going the best at the moment but it’s a building block.
Soufrière Hills is an active, complex stratovolcano with many lava domes forming its summit, located on the Caribbean island of Montserrat.
After 350 years of quiet, it came back into life in 1995 and started to build a new lava dome. This is the first eruption of the volcano in historic time.
The eruption alternated between less or more intense phases including rapid dome growth with associated powerful vulcanian explosions and large pyroclastic flows from dome collapse.
It should be noted that the eruptions are still lasting, and because of them, more than half of the island is uninhabitable, where also the capital Plymouth was devastated.
After the first eruption, many of the inhabitants have left the island, and the southwestern side of the island is covered with ash and lava, as well as the capital.
This has forced the islanders to build a new capital naming it Little Bay, and will be located on the northwestern part of the island.
Nonetheless, the airport was destroyed as well, so new airport is being built close to the new capital.
The volcano is named for the French word soufrière, meaning “sulfur outlet”.
The Soufrière Hills Volcano produces andesite lava which is so thick that it cannot flow, it therefore piles up in the summit crater and builds a lava dome.
If parts of the lava dome become unstable they may collapse forming hot, fast-moving avalanches of lava blocks, gas and dust called pyroclastic flows.
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory’s seismic monitoring is continuous, and they have reported many vulcanian explosions that occurred after its first eruption.
It is really sad to see how the island is being destroyed by the planet Earth, but it simply allures you to be a witness of that kind of devastation.
This week in History is a recap of events all over the world during the week.

Ships and boats are two of the oldest types of transportation and were first built thousands of years ago.
Not only have ships and boats been used for transportation throughout history, they have been used for a number of other reasons including to transport cargo, fishing, as a type of defense from armed forces, sports, leisure, and relaxation.
Today, ships, boats and yachts are built using advanced technology and materials, differing greatly from those that have been used throughout history.
So today on the show, let’s look at some trending boats of 2023 with Features, Designs that is setting New Standard On Water.
A boat is a watercraft of a large range of types and sizes, but generally smaller than a ship, which is distinguished by its larger size, shape, cargo or passenger capacity, or its ability to carry boats.
Small boats are typically found on inland waterways such as rivers and lakes, or in protected coastal areas.
However, some boats, such as the whaleboat, were intended for use in an offshore environment.
In modern naval terms, a boat is a vessel small enough to be carried aboard a ship.
Boats vary in proportion and construction methods with their intended purpose, available materials, or local traditions.
Canoes have been used since prehistoric times and remain in use throughout the world for transportation, fishing, and sport.
Fishing boats vary widely in style partly to match local conditions.
Pleasure craft used in recreational boating include ski boats, pontoon boats, and sailboats. House boats may be used for vacationing or long-term residence.
The unrivalled versatility of Wellcraft owns the offshore with innovation and performance brought to the forefront with the Wellcraft 355.

Differences Between Yachts And Boats
Size
The first key difference between a boat and a yacht is their size. A yacht is typically bigger than a boat and whilst there is no strict definition of what a yacht is, the general consensus is that if it is over 40 feet in length, it is usually considered a yacht.
Purpose
Typically, boats are used for more recreational activities including fishing, cruising and watersports.
As well as this, they can be used for commercial use and transportation with cargo or ferries. This is why boats that aren’t ferries or cargo tend to have a smaller, more simplistic design.
Luxury Features
Another factor that easily sets boats and yachts apart are their luxury facilities. In general, boats do not have luxury facilities and whilst they might have an underdeck area, this will only be small and not include any kind of ‘luxuries’.
Yachts however are usually equipped with multiple luxury features including spacious cabins, full kitchens, multiple bathrooms, swimming pools, hot tubs, television systems and in some cases, even helipads.
Cost
Because boats are fit for a smaller, more simplistic purpose you should expect these to cost less than a yacht. You could, on average, buy a boat ranging from a few thousand pounds right up to £700,000 but a yacht would come at prices from about £100,000 to £10,000,000.
5. Maintenance
Whilst it is important to consider the costs of buying a boat or a yacht, it is also important to consider the upkeep that is going to come with that.
In general, a yacht requires more maintenance than boats due to them being larger and having more complex systems.
6. Engine Power
Boats and yachts differs in the power of their engines. There are a lot of boats that won’t even have an engine.
It could range from a small boat requiring manpower to operate to larger boats using wind and sails to move.
Boats that do have an engine can reach quite high speeds and run for some periods of time, but their engine capacity is not comparable to a yacht.

4. Mystic M5200
The Mystic M5200 makes our list of coolest boats because it’s a stunner.
This fancy boat is an eye-popping combination of performance and luxury, packed with quad Mercury 600s generating 2400 horsepower.
Built for the biggest adventurers, this vessel seamlessly blends speed and elegance (paying careful attention to detail). The result? Riders receive the ultimate on-the-water experience and luxury feel.
When it came to debuting the new M5200 center console, the lake made sense especially with the large crowds in town for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in late August.
The 52-footer is the largest in Mystic’s center console lineup, which includes the M3800 and M4200. The M5200 is a beast with a 14-foot beam and four Mercury Marine Verado 600 outboard engines.
Mystic’s M5200 is now the largest center console in the company’s lineup.
The first M5200 was stocked with seating, starting in the bow with three individual sculpted lounges in front of the console and U-shaped bench. Under the expansive carbon-fiber hardtop, which is built-in house at Mystic’s Florida shop, are two rows of four-person individual bucket seats protected by a large wraparound windshield.
Below, Mystic has a full cabin that includes air conditioning with a berth forward that can be used for dining or entertaining. An aft cabin offers accommodations for guests or children.
Mystic powered the first M5200 with four Mercury Marine Verado 600 outboard engines.
Mystic Powerboats’ owner John Cosker has always had success at Lake of the Ozarks whether it’s running in the Shootout or growing the Mystic brand on the central Missouri lake.
Cosker spent two years developing the M5200 at the request of a customer.
Mystic had built a 60-foot center console with outboards that went to Dubai, and the customer wanted a similar boat.
Cosker agreed to build a 52-footer and the response has been strong. In addition to the prototype, the next four hulls are already accounted for, he said.
5. Formula 387 CCF
One of the industry’s most iconic brands is re-entering the center console business with the Formula 387 CCF. This vessel blends old-school Formula style with a modern center console sport template.
Then, it tacks on an impressive list of fishing features, including triple helm seats with folding armrests, an electronically adjustable center seat, dual 40-gallon live wells, port and starboard fish boxes, and so much more.
With its 12-foot beam, there’s plenty of fishing room, including 24-inch-wide walkways around the console.
Two pressurized 40-gallon livewells on the transom keep flowing even in rough water thanks to the boat’s sea-chest-contained livewell pumps.
Red and white lights and clear lids allow for easy monitoring of bait, day or night. There’s an option for four electric reel outlets ($2,265), and the 90-gallon aft fish boxes can be optionally equipped with freezer plates ($35,490).
The boat’s 38-foot-7-inch hull length features a double-step design with 23 degrees of transom deadrise to slice through waves.

Niger State government has advised teachers in primary and post-primary schools to change their attitude to work.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in the state, Dr Hadiza Mohammed, who stated this at a one-day interactive session with executives of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), to prevail on their members to improve themselves.
Represented by the Director, Test Measurement, the commissioner decried the lack of interest in the teaching profession and tasked stakeholders on the need to restore its lost glory.
The Head of Service, Abubakar Salisu, said the government has approved the promotion of about 200 civil servants who have spent over four years in their previous rank from grade level 16 to 17.
Earlier, the NUT chairman in the state, Adamu Akayago, disclosed that the event was aimed at training and retraining union leaders with a view to building their intellectual capacity.
On his part, the ANCOPPS chairman, Musa Nayawo, expressed concerns that a substantial number of experienced teachers have retired from service, thereby creating a vacuum.
He warned that unless urgent steps are taken to recruit new teachers, the sector may experience a setback while students also suffer.
He said almost half of our senior teachers would be retiring from service, I am appealing to the government to approve the extension of the service year of teachers from 35 to 40 and the retirement age to 60 years.
The Director of Research and Development at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Prof Godwin Okon, has urged the Federal Government to implement policies that promote gender equality, especially the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG- 5), which stipulates 40 per cent participation of women in decision making.
Okon, who is also a lecturer in the department of mass communication, lamented that women participation in politics and decision making policies have remained very low.
The university teacher was the keynote speaker at a two-day training organized by the Step-Up for Women in Journalism Initiative (SWIJ) in Port Harcourt.
In his paper titled Facilitating the implementation of gender policies within the newsroom and organisations, he noted that stereotype is one of the greatest propellers of gender inequality, stressing that despite Nigeria being a signatory to gender equality women participation in political activities have remained low.
He lamented that despite making giant marks in the media and corporate world, the mass media has failed to celebrate women.
In proffering solutions, Okon enjoined women, especially those in the media to prevail on the government to implement gender equality policies.
He also called on the coalition of female professionals to make themselves seen and visible.
Speakers at the two-day event also emphasized the need for female journalists to key into the changing trend in journalism by promoting their work on social media.
Former commissioner for information in Rivers State, Ibim Semenitari, while speaking on the topic Becoming an expert source for news: How to improve visibility and impact on gender-based issues,” highlighted gender imbalance as one of the key impediments to women as news sources.
She emphasised that female journalists must be intentional in using women as news sources.
Semenitari, a former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), added that female journalists must be fresh and innovative, honest and accessible to make a mark in their career and become news sources.
In her address, Executive Director of SWIJ, Ann Godwin, said the gap between the male and female gender has remained glaring.
The programme was supported by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), under its Report Women Programme being funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Over 7,000 pharmacists have emigrated from Nigeria in the last two years, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Professor Cyril Usifoh, revealed on Tuesday in Gombe.
He told the Newmen that the pharmacists left Nigeria in search of a better practice environment abroad.
According to him, the issue of brain drain which has remained one of the major challenges in the health sector needed serious attention in the interest of the well-being of Nigerians.
Usifoh said the government needed to create a conducive environment for pharmacists to work so as to reverse the trend and to encourage them to stay and contribute to the development of the country.
“If you want to stop brain drain, you will create conditions to enable people not to go. Government should create an enabling environment that will prevent people from leaving, but to come here.
“I am confident that when the opportunities are there, you will have what we call brain gain. They will come back. We are here, we are not leaving,’’ he declared.
Usifoh, a professor of Pharmacy said part of PSN’s activities as an association was to make Nigeria more self-sufficient and to improve the health sector.
On the society’s 96th annual conference being held in Gombe State, the president said the PSN was in the state to evaluate its works in the past one year and to strategise on ways to improve the health sector.
He noted that members and industrialists attending the conference were working to partner with the Gombe State government to harness opportunities that abound in the state’s pharmaceutical industry.
“We are planning to partner with the government, especially in its industrial park and to examine how pharmaceutical companies can possibly set up outlets in the state,’’ he added.
The theme of the PSN 2023 conference is ‘Pharmaceutical Practice: A pivot to universal health coverage in Nigeria’.
