HotSat-1: UK Satellite Returns 1st Variations Of Heat Pictures Across Earth

0

A novel UK satellite has returned its first pictures of heat variations across the surface of the Earth.

HotSat-1 carries the highest resolution commercial thermal sensor in orbit, enabling it to trace hot and cold features as small as 3.5m across.

In the initial imagery, a Chicago train is observed moving through the night and the flame fronts of Canadian wildfires are precisely mapped.

London operator SatVu plans to launch seven additional spacecraft.

This will increase the volume of data it can acquire but also reduce the time between passes over particular locations, meaning changes in a scene can be detected more rapidly.

HotSat-1, with its mid-wave infrared camera, was assembled by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) in Guildford and launched in June on a SpaceX rocket flying out of California.

The spacecraft manufacturer is due to complete its in-orbit testing and commissioning phase in the next week.

“At that point ‘we get the keys’, so to speak, and we’ll then be able to task the satellite ourselves and get the data down for our customers,” Tobias Reinicke, the chief technology officer at SatVu, told BBC News.

They’ll permit urban planners, for example, to see roof tops and walls.

This will enable them to understand the temperature profiles of individual buildings, offices and factories. It’s information that can identify infrastructure that’s wasting energy and is in need of better insulation.

Niger State Residents Urged To Change Attitude Toward Waste Disposal

0

General Manager, Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA), Dr Mohammed Abubakar has called on residents to change their attitude toward indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Abubakar made the call during a meeting with staff of the agency on assumption of office in Minna, the state’s capital.

“It is not going to be business as usual; we need to change our attitude towards lots of things.

“You cannot generate waste and confidently bring out that waste and dump it in an open ground, we want to ensure responsibility in management of waste and this include disposal of waste,” he said

He said that the agency would come up with new policies on waste disposal in the state.

The general manager said that the new policies would be either disposal of waste at a primary dumping site, or secondary collection points depending on the peculiarity of the area.

He said that the era of people dumping waste indiscriminately was over, adding that the urban renewal policy of Gov. Umaru Bago could only succeed in a clean environment.

Abubakar said that the governor had given a matching order to reposition the agency within the next six months to become a revenue generating agency.

In her remarks, Hajiya Halima Ndanusa, who had been overseeing the agency, expressed optimism that the new general manager would bring his wealth of experience in waste management.

She said the agency was faced with the challenge of inadequate funding, and lack of modern equipment to enable it discharge its responsibility effectively.

The Lagos State Task Force has impounded 35 vehicles for illegal parking and road obstruction along the Jibowu corridor in the Yaba area of the state.

The task force’s spokesperson, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, in a statement on Thursday, said the operation took place on Wednesday and was coordinated by the agency’s chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, who described the actions of some transport operators as “self-cantered” for occupying a large portion of the road to load goods on their vehicles and pick up passengers.

According to Abdulraheem, Jejeloye disclosed that residents and commuters who ply the route complained of the activities of the bus operators at Jibowu “who converted those areas to roadside courier stations and mini garages.”

“It is sad to see these transport operators move their business from their premises down to the main road meant for free vehicular movement just for their selfish gains.

“Their actions cause increased travel time and unnecessary chaos once it gets dark,” the statement quoted Jejeloye as saying.

The chairman further disclosed that the vehicles impounded had been booked and the owners would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“It’s high time we put a stop to this inhumanity to Lagosians plying that route. We will ensure constant patrol and monitoring of the Jibowu corridor especially at night when such infractions usually occur and make sure anyone caught inflicting unnecessary discomfort to road users is arrested and charged to court,” he added.

Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Task Force on Thursday demolished shanties and makeshift structures around the Lekki-Epe area.

The operation was carried out around Ikota, Eleganza Bus Stop.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the shanties and makeshift structures defaced the expressway and were also said to be dens of criminals in the area.

Officials of the task force were said to have faced opposition from some individuals who initially stalled the operation.

When contacted, the task force Public Relations Officer, Abdulraheem, confirmed the operation which he said targeted only shanties that were against the “New Lagos status.”

He said, “Given the agenda of the state, we don’t want that kind of thing in New Lagos mega city status, shanties were demolished, not buildings.”

Banking Sector Pledges Support For Nigeria’s Economy

0

The Banking sector in Nigeria says it will continue to contribute to national development, by contributing to the agricultural and manufacturing sectors.

The President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Ken Okpara, made the pledge in Abuja on Thursday, when he led the leader of the Bankers Institute on a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He said the slowdown in economic activities was responsible for depletion in the banking sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP but that tide is already changing.

Nigerian banking sector attracts $15.7 billion foreign investments in 5 years

“Essentially the banking sector represents the engine of growth and that is very important. They serve as catalysts for economic growth. What you saw with the growth in terms of our GDP contribution is what happened during the period of the last quarter where there was a slowdown in economic activities.

“But what we are seeing now is that banks are also deepening access to financial support especially to the key sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, small businesses and infrastructure.

‘So, we are going to see growth in the financial system as we move on, especially before the end of this financial year,” he assured Nigeirans.

Okpara also highlighted other areas of collaboration between the Nigerian government and the Chartered Institute of Bankers.

“The Vice President used the opportunity to share his vision and how we can work together; he talked about digital education, which is very important and we assured him that the Chartered Institute of Bankers will actually identify with the key initiatives in that area especially in the financial and economic sectors of our country,” he added.

0

Nigeria’s government has said it plans to increase the country’s per capita Gross Domestic Products (GDP) to US$6,000 and US$33,000 by 2030 and 2050 respectively.

Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu while speaking at the World Press Conference on the forthcoming 29th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) scheduled to take place in Abuja, on October 29th said the plan would also bring poverty rate to 0.6 per cent and unemployment rate to 6.3 per cent, while transiting the economy to the highest per capita GDP in the group of upper-middle income economies.

“Overall, the main target of the Nigeria Agenda 2050 is to increase the country’s per capita GDP to US$6,000 and US$33,000 by 2030 and 2050 respectively. It will also bring poverty rate to 0.6 per cent and unemployment rate to 6.3 per cent, while transiting the economy to the highest per capita GDP in the group of upper-middle income economies.

“The plan will be effectively implemented by successive governments through six number 5-Year Medium-Term National Development Plans and Annual Budgets” he said

Nigeria’s GDP Grows By 2.51% In Q2 Of 2023

According to the Minister, the Renewed Hope Agenda and eight priority areas of the current administration are aimed at fast-tracking the goals of the Nigeria Agenda 2050 and the National Development Plan 2021-2025 with a double-digit growth rate and inclusive development.

To this effect ,the Ministry is in the process of conducting the mid-term review of the National Development Plan (NDP 2021-2025) with the purpose of fine-tuning the plan and ensuring that the Renewed Hope Agenda of the government is incorporated into the NDP 2021-2025.

He, however, welcomed innovative ideas from the stakeholders at the summit to ensure its effective integration into the NDP 2021-2025.

In his remarks, Chairman, Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Olaniyi Yusuf observed that one of Nigeria’s pressing concerns is the need to translate economic growth into improved living standards for its citizens.

He said that despite experiencing growth over the past years, the country still grapples with rising unemployment, income disparity, and multidimensional poverty.

These challenges, according to him, are worsened by an uneven allocation of resources, macroeconomic instability, and institutional deficiencies.

“Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in 2022 revealed that approximately 62.9 per cent of the population (i.e., 133 million people) live in multidimensional poverty, threatening the development of a vibrant middle class.

“Nigeria’s youthful population presents a tremendous opportunity for accelerating national development through entrepreneurship and innovation. With a large pool of creative and ambitious young minds, the country has the potential to foster a vibrant start-up ecosystem and drive economic growth. By leveraging technology and innovation, these creative minds can introduce disruptive solutions, create jobs, and contribute to the overall progress of the Nigerian economy” he said.

It is against this backdrop that NESG aims to focus on enhancing the role of entrepreneurship, skills and innovation, as well as sub-national and local governments, as drivers of economic growth and development.

“The ultimate objective is to foster the creation of a more inclusive, sustainable and equitable economy. The summit aims to foster collaboration among key stakeholders from diverse sectors and devise effective strategies to promote good governance at all levels of government” he explained.
