Victor Osimhen has emerged as the top scorer of the qualifying series of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

His three goals in the 6-0 defeat of Sao Tome & Principe brought his total to 10, five more than his closest rival, Senegal Sadio Mane.

His topping of goal chart could also put him in the frame to win the African Footballer of the Year award holding in Morocco in December.

The Super Eagles finished the 2023 Africa Cup of Nation qualifying series amassing a total of 22 goals, the highest by any of the 54 entries for the competition.

But 16 of the goals were against one team, Sao Tome & Principe who were beaten 10-0 and 6-0 respectively in away and home matches.

Lagos Shuts Eight Nightclubs, Event Centres

The Lagos State Government has shut eight nightclubs and event centres within Ikeja and Victoria Island respectively.

The Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola disclosed that it sealed the facilities in the interest of public safety, and in furtherance of its mandate to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

He said the Commission aimed to achieve zero accidents in workplaces and public facilities.

According to him, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has zero tolerance for violation of safety laws and would continually monitor such facilities to ensure compliance with laid down safety laws.

Mojola at a meeting held in Alausa with nightclub operators and event centre owners about two months ago, issued warnings and vowed to shut clubs allowing the use of drugs and firearms.

He decried the presence of underage persons in many nightclubs in the state, saying that it is against the law to allow the presence of minors at nightclubs.

Lagos to Close Down Night clubs Over Drugs, Firearms

Mojola stated that said clubs’ frontages had been turned to drug sales outlets and did not mandate the use of proper signages to convey the message of no drugs, no firearms and no underage to club goers.

He admonished nightclub owners and event centre operators to respect the laws of the state as the government would not hesitate to wield the big stick on those flagrantly violating and disregarding the laws of the state.

Some of the facilities that were in contravention include Hot Box Night Club, Shades Night Club, Buzzbar, CCX Lounge and a number of event centres.

Mojola implored all recreational and event centres in the state who are yet to register with the Safety Commission to do so and obtain the safety compliance certificate.

He also encouraged event centre owners to obtain an event safety permit through the website www. lasgsafetyreg.com and that in addition, they should provide fire extinguishers, proper hygiene, housekeeping, use of safety signages at designated areas while ensuring adequate parking spaces are provided to curtail traffic gridlock and other safety infractions that could endanger lives and cause inconveniences to the members of the public.

Mojola reiterated that enforcement exercises will continue to take place across the state as the Commission will continue to do its best in discharging its duties, especially in ensuring public safety and a safer Lagos for all.

American Teenager Coco Gauff Fights Back To Beat Aryna Sabalenka And Win U.S. Open

0

Teenager Coco Gauff mounted a fierce comeback to beat Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the U.S. Open women’s final on Saturday, claiming her first Grand Slam title and cementing her place in American tennis royalty.

With the win, sixth seed Gauff became the first American to win a U.S. Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017.

Gauff, 19, fed off noisy local support as she fought back in the second set and kept the momentum going until the end of the battle, before falling to the court on Arthur Ashe Stadium as she clinched the title with a backhand winner.

Sabalenka had a superb start but could not keep the momentum going as unforced errors piled up and she closed her 2023 Grand Slam run, which included an Australian Open title and semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, on a disappointing note.

“It doesn’t get more dramatic than that, to be honest,” said Gauff, who lost in her only previous major final appearance last year at Roland Garros.

“I knew today was going to be one of those problem-solving tough matches because she’s a tough opponent, so I’m obviously happy with the result.”

There were early signs of nervousness from both players, as Gauff made a pair of unforced errors to help Sabalenka to a break in the opening game, and the Belarusian dropped serve in the fourth game with two double faults and an unforced error.

The crowd urged on Gauff, the first American teenager to reach the U.S. Open singles final since Serena Williams in 2001.

But Sabalenka blocked out the noise and used her mighty forehand to convert on a break point chance in the fifth game. The Belarusian was helped to another break in the seventh as Gauff double faulted and made two more costly forehand mistakes.

The 25-year-old Sabalenka, who will take over as world number one in the new rankings, had ended Gauff’s run at Indian Wells earlier this year but told reporters this week she expected a “different player” in Saturday’s final.

She ended up facing just that in the second set, as the American showed new resolve when she fended off a pair of break points in the first game and flipped the script.

What was once a lopsided affair turned into a battle as Gauff increased her intensity, sending Sabalenka scrambling around the court in the fourth game before the Belarusian dropped her serve with a double fault.

Gauff produced an overhead smash to break in the opening game of the third set and converted another in the third game.

Sabalenka took a medical timeout after the fifth game, consulting a physio for an apparent issue with her left thigh, but did not appear worse off as she broke in the next game.

If Gauff was rattled, however, she did not show it, winning a 20-shot rally before breaking back in the seventh game and soaking up the adoration of the crowd at the major she grew up watching as she clinched the title.

Exploring The Shilin Stone Forest In China

0

The Shilin Stone Forest, or sometimes called just Shilin, is a notable natural formation of limestone, located in the Shilin Yi Autonomous County, within Yunnan Province, which is part of the People’s Republic of China.

With an estimated area of about 400 square km (150 square mi), this stone forest is looking like petrified trees, rising above the ground like some sort of stalagmites, creating enormous arrays of labyrinths that are easy for one to get lost between them.

Created over 270 million years ago, some of the tall rocks are rising even 30 meters (98 feet) towards the sky, and nowadays the interesting site forms part of the South China Karst region that extends over a surface which is measured by some to 500,000 square km (193,051 square mi).

This alluring place is interesting to those people who would like to get a different glance of China, where plenty of unique scenic spots can be seen here, thus making it one of the most unique places on Earth.

With a simple walk through the site, every visitor can gaze and marvel at the gorgeous masterpieces and simply be bewitched by the impressive formations.

Divided into many smaller stone forests, the most interesting are the Naigu Forest and Suogeyi Village, which are too part of the above mentioned South China Karst Region, making it part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In addition there are plenty of caves, waterfalls, ponds, a small lake with an island, and even an underground river.

Also, there are many legends that originated in this magical place, which were passed along by the native people known as Sani, who are branch of the Yi ethnic group.

One of the most famous legends is the one for Ashima, who is considered to be born here, and she was a beautiful girl of the Yi people.

After falling in love, she was not granted to marry her chosen one, and due to that, she turned into a stone in the forest that still bears her name.

Nonetheless, since almost all of the karst types have been identified in the park, it can definitely be acclaimed internationally as the ‘Museum of Stone Forest Karst’, where in the future there will be even more visitors.
