Sudden Storm: Southampton Cruise Ship Hit In Spain, Collides With Freight Ship

0

Passengers on Britannia, a P&O Cruises ship based in Southampton, Hampshire, said their vessel “collided with a freight ship in Palma, Mallorca”.

One man on board said they were “being pushed ashore by tugs whilst confined to our cabins”.

A company spokesperson said that the captain was keeping guests “updated”.

People aboard the ship recorded videos and images of the incident.

Passenger Gavin McCoy said the “unexpected drama” happened while “the local fire service and crew were carrying out an emergency drill”.

He said that at about 11:00 BST “a sudden rain and wind storm ripped us away from our dockside moorings, breaking tethering lines, water hoses, and causing the walkway to fall into the sea”.

“Ingy and I were sitting by the window in the coffee shop, and the first thing we saw were the blue dockside reception marquee tents blowing through the air,” Mr McCoy added.

“We’ve drifted well away from the berth and collided into a nearby freight/cargo ship.”

The storm is likely to be one of the severe thunderstorms, affecting the Balearic Islands.

The captain informed passengers that “there’s no structural compromise, but deck 5 has sustained a small amount of damage” on the PA system.

P&O Cruises spokesperson said they were “aware of an incident involving Britannia on Sunday morning” and were “working to assess the situation”.

Mr McCoy said that everyone was safe and there was “no problem on the ship apart from a few scrapes and bumps to one or more lifeboats that project from the ship”.

“The many people on coach excursions will be able to get back on again,” he added.

Britannia has headed back to port to pick up passengers who had been ashore.

The cruise started in Southampton and is due back on 1 September.

This is the second time an emergency has happened on a Southampton ship due to bad weather in recent weeks, with the Queen Mary 2 breaking free from its bow mooring line and drifting off the quay on 4 August.

Tropical Storm Idalia To Make Landfall Near Florida

0

As of Sunday at 11 a.m., Idalia will meander near the Yucatan Peninsula through the start of tomorrow before lifting northward into the Gulf of Mexico late Monday into Tuesday, where additional strengthening is likely.

The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center still has Idalia making landfall as a 90mph Category 1 hurricane near the Big Bend area of Florida.

However, strong winds and heavy rain will still extend to the east of the center, which will lead to some fringe impacts here in South Florida.

Locally, storms will start to increase Monday, as tropical moisture moves into the area.

By Monday night, we’ll begin to see some of the far outerbands move in, bringing squally bands of rain and gusty winds.

This will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday is looking like the windiest day, with gusts of 35 – 45 mph.

We’ll continue to monitor the localized flood threat, with heavy rain possible under training tropical downpours. We’ll also have to watch for the potential of seeing quick tropical spin-up tornadoes as bands push onshore.

Changes in both track and intensity will result in changes to our forecast. So we’ll continue to nail down specifics over the next day or so.

Milan Records Hottest Day In 260 Years (1763)

Italy’s northern city of Milan registered a new record high average daily temperature of 33 Celsius (91.4 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday as a heatwave which began around mid-August reached its peak, the regional environmental protection agency (ARPA) said on Friday.

It was the hottest day since the Milano Brera weather station started recording temperatures in 1763. Milan’s previous record of 32.8 C was set on Aug. 11, 2003.

The Italian capital Rome registered a record peak of 41.8 Celsius (°C) in July, as much of southern Europe broiled this summer, fuelling wildfires, prompting governments to issue health warnings, and disrupting holidays for many tourists.

ARPA said in a statement that Aug. 23 and 24 have been the hottest days of the summer across the whole of the Lombardy region which surrounds Milan, with several towns registering peak temperatures above 40 C.

It added that “intense and abnormal” temperatures also hit the Italian Alps.

The heatwave is about to end though, the agency said, giving way to heavy thunderstorms and a sharp drop in temperatures of up to 10-15 C early next week.

Evacuation Order Lifted For West Maui As Firefighters Stop Movement Of Fire

0

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency on Saturday briefly issued an evacuation order for West Maui due to brush fire.

The order was in place for Anapuni Loop to West Mahipulu, the agency said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The order was subsequently lifted after firefighters stopped forward movement of the fire, the agency said in a follow-up post.

“Evacuate your family and pets now, do not delay. Expect conditions that may make driving difficult and watch for public safety personnel operating in the area,” the order said.

The island of Maui was devastated earlier this month after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century swept through the resort town of Lahaina, leaving 115 people dead and 338 missing.

Search teams are still sifting through Lahaina’s blackened ruins, although officials said on Friday that process was nearly complete.

Canada: Entire Town Of Hay River Ordered To Leave As Wildfires Encroach

Wildfires in Canada’s Northwest Territories on Friday forced the evacuation of the entire town of Hay River, a community of about 4,000 people on the Great Slave Lake, authorities said.

The government of the Northwest Territories ordered everyone in town, including essential workers, to go to the Hay River Merlyn Carter Airport and await further instructions.

“Anyone who remains in Hay River is doing so at their own risk,” the Northwest Territories government said in an alert posted at 3:23 p.m. local time on Friday. “There will be no emergency services or response available.”

Canada is experiencing its worst wildfire season on record and in the past week more than 50,000 people, including the entire population of the Northwest Territories’ capital Yellowknife, have been forced to flee their homes.

Mail service to numerous communities in the Northwest Territories has also been impacted by the fires, the government said in a later alert.

Exploring Cagsawa Ruins In The Philippines

0

The Cagsawa Ruins, sometimes spelled as Kagsawa, are remnants of a historic Franciscan church from 16th century that is located in the Barangay Busay of the Municipality of Daraga in the Bicol Region, within the Republic of the Philippines.

The ruins were part of the once thriving town of Cagsawa that was followed by not so fortunate destiny. As a matter in fact, the town was originally built in 1587, but in 1636 it was burned down and destroyed by the Dutch pirates that were roaming in the area.

After a while, in 1724 Cagsawa was rebuilt by Fr. Francisco Blanco, but the destiny played a bit more with the small town and once again Cagsawa was destroyed, but this time with the eruption of the Mayon Volcano that occurred on 1 February 1814.

Some 1,200 people sought refuge in the stone-built church, nonetheless, as the eruption was the strongest ever recorded for the Mayon Volcano, it killed most of the locals in the vicinity.

Those that survived this quite powerful volcanic blast resettled nearby, as they considered this to be their home to which they are used to.

Still, from that period, the belfry of the church is all that remains, even though the church’s façade survived the eruption, but collapsed over time, and nowadays together with the rest of the destroyed and buried town, it is in the memory of those that remember that Cagsawa once existed.

Due to the cultural importance the ruins have, Cagsawa Ruins are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Province, as well as in the nation, which is why they are protected in a park which is overseen by the municipal government of Daraga.

Ultimately presented as a symbol of the dangers of living in close proximity with the Mayon Volcano, Cagsawa Ruins are gaining constantly greater attention from the tourists that would like to explore something extra from this impressive nation in South-East Asia.

External Reserves Fall by $915m After Naira Float

0

Nigeria’s external reserves dropped by $915m after the Central Bank of Nigeria officially floated the naira and liberalised the foreign exchange market.

CBN data obtained on Sunday showed that the reserves, which stood at $34.66bn as of June 14, 2023, when the naira was floated, fell to $33.74bn as of August 24, 2023.

The naira value had closed at 471.67/$ at the Investor & Exporter forex window on June 13, a day before the CBN announced the naira float.

Following the development, the local currency fell to over 700/$ at the I&E window.

Naira Ends Week on Negative Note

The naira has been trading at over 700/dollar since then.

At the parallel market on Saturday, the naira was bought and sold for 900/$ and 915/$.

Pounds Sterling was bought and sold for N1160 and N1180, according to Bureau de Change operators.

At the I&E window, the naira commenced trading on Friday at 773.29/$ and hit a high of 799.9/$ before closing at 778.42/$.

At the last Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the acting Governor, CBN, Mr Folashodun Shonubi, had said, “Accretion to external reserves remains weak while foreign exchange demand pressure persists.”

While noting that the apex bank would save the naira from further slides, he vowed to clamp down on operations of illegal Bureau de Change operators.

The development came after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said it was taking a $3bn loan from Africa Import and Export Bank, as a temporary measure to improve dollar supply in the country.

The President of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadabe, had said the CBN would be going tough on illegal operators in their efforts to stabilise the naira.

“At a sensitisation engagement between the CBN and a few of our compliance officers across the zones, the apex bank reiterated that by August 31, 2023, any breaches on the allowable margin of -2.5 per cent and +2.5  per cent on the average weighted rate of I&E closing rate, rendition of returns and payment of penalties, if any, will lead to revocation of the operating licence of the operator,” he said.

Nigerian Startups, Others’ Funding hits $20B– Report

0

The Nigerian startup space and others on the continent attracted over $20bn in the last 15 years, according to Briter Bridges’ H1 Africa Investment Report 2023.

Briter Bridges stated that the continent’s funding in the first half of 2023 was over $2bn, which raised the total funding into the sector to over $20bn in 15 years.

The report said this came at a time when many in the ecosystem were concerned about what the future of investing in Africa looked like.

It stated, “Africa’s innovation industry is now worth more than $21bn. However, this milestone has come at a time when the change in the global macro environment is raising questions about the viability of investing in startups, let alone Africa.”

Significant changes in the funding environment were putting pressure on startups and investors alike, with many startups shutting down and many funds struggling to meet their target closings, the firm said.

President Buhari Inaugurates Council on Startup Act

“Others have been forced to write-down on their valuations and make deep cuts to their teams,” it said.

According to the report, investors were shifting focus from growth-stage startups to late and early-stage ones.

It stated that there had been some of mega-deals in fintech, logistics, and climate tech in the late-stage sub-ecosystem, and this had been responsible for the majority of funding in the first half of the year.

Despite losing its number-one status as the largest aggregator of funding volume, Nigerian startups were still the most active on the funding scene.

According to the report, Nigeria ($280m) was now number five on the continent in terms of funding volume. Kenya ($520m), Egypt ($510m), South Africa ($400m) and Rwanda ($280m) make up the top four.

Total funding dropped by 26 per cent during the period under review, with funding recording a negative trend so far.

The firm stated that the African tech ecosystem is now 18 months into the downturn.

It said, “Funding to startups in Africa peaked from Q3, 2021 to Q1, 2022, with the downturn in funding volumes starting in Q2, 2022. Each quarter following Q2, which saw a decrease in the volume of deals, By Q4, the volume of deals was down more than 50 per cent.”

Increasing pressure on startups and investors was raising questions about whether venture capital was sustainable in Africa, the firm stated.

It said that there was a need for innovation in the financing side, with debt financing already becoming an attractive option for startups.

U.S Feature Phones Market Grows

0

The feature phones market in the United States have made a resurgence as Gen Z and millennials are advocating for digital detoxes due to the mental health concerns brought on by smartphones and social media.

This is as hashtags like #bringbackfliphones on TikTok have garnered millions of views leading to the increased adoption of feature phones by younger consumers looking to adhere to movements like digital detoxing, minimalist lifestyles, and unplugging, Counterpoint Research has said.

According to Counterpoint, the market is more crowded now. It stated that smartphones were widely adopted almost instantly when they arrived and because of this, the US feature phone market shrank significantly over the past 10 years.

It said, “Currently, the feature phone market contributes to only a little more than a two per cent share of overall handset sales in the US.

“Among the players catering to this segment of the market, TCL, which manufactures feature phones for major carriers in both branded and white-label capacities, leads the pack with a 43 per cent share due to its strong presence on carrier channels. HMD ranks second with a 26 per cent share, while other smaller players make up for the rest of the market.”

The firm noted that feature phones still hold their place in the market and are likely to see consistent shipments, helped by their affordability and durability to suit specific use cases. It continued that while growth in numbers may not be huge, the demand from consumers looking for a feature phone as a digital detox mechanism will continue.

It added, “There is a consumer base looking for devices that are minimalistic but also have features that are relevant to staying connected in today’s world. The design and specifications of feature phones have not changed much over the last few years.

“This is one of the factors that keep consumers from purchasing a feature phone. The addition of some new hardware configurations and features that are abreast with the current trends while still maintaining the simplicity of usage may open more gates for the growth of feature phones. NFC is one such feature.”
