The Organised Labour has vowed to proceed with a total, comprehensive and indefinite nationwide shutdown of the country, should there be another increase in Petrol Pump price from the existing 617 naira, which it describes as “illegal”.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, gave the notification on Monday, at the African Trade Union alliance meeting in Abuja, where organised labour also warned against undermining the demands of the union.

NLC Threatens Nationwide Strike, Demands Reversal Of Petrol Price

Oil marketers on Sunday indicated that the cost of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, would rise to between N680/lite and N720/litre in the coming weeks should the dollar continue to trade from N910 to N950 at the parallel market.

They also hinted that dealers seeking to import PMS were being forced to put the plans on hold due to the scarcity of foreign exchange to import the commodity.

The organised labour had early suspended a proposed indefinite strike on Thursday, August 4, 2023, following a meeting with the President, Bola Tinubu.

Indian Himalayas: Over 50 Killed As Rain Triggers Landslides

0

Torrential rain in India’s Himalayas triggered landslides over the weekend that have killed over 50 people, with the death toll expected to rise as more than 20 remain trapped or missing, officials said on Monday.

Unusually heavy rain and melting glaciers have brought deadly flash floods to the mountains of India and neighbouring Pakistan and Nepal over the past year or two, with government officials increasingly blaming climate change.

Television footage from India’s Himachal Pradesh state showed houses flattened by landslides, buses and cars hanging on the edge of precipices after roads gave way, and hundreds of people at rescue sites as emergency workers struggled to clear debris.

“Again, tragedy has befallen Himachal Pradesh, with continuous rainfall over the past 48 hours,” the state’s chief minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, said in a post on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

More than 50 people had died in rain-related incidents within 24 hours, Sukhu told Indian news agency ANI, in which Reuters has a minority stake.

“This number can rise further because 20 people are still trapped,” he said.

Officials from the state disaster management authority, meanwhile, said that 41 bodies had been recovered by Monday evening.

“Another 13 people are missing but, as time passes, we are losing hope that they will be pulled out alive,” said state disaster management official Praveen Bhardwaj.

In one of the most deadly incidents, a temple collapsed in the state capital, Shimla, with rescuers pulling out at least nine bodies, the chief minister said.

In Solan district, houses collapsed, killing at least seven people, and a mother and her child were killed in Mandi district when their house collapsed, Bhardwaj said.

Television footage showed swollen rivers breaking their banks in Himachal and neighbouring Uttarakhand state, where also two people died and four were missing in incidents related to the rains, the Uttarakhand Disaster Management control room told Reuters.

The India Meteorological Department issued a “red alert” for both states on Monday and has forecast rainfall intensity to reduce from Tuesday onwards.

Parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand received as much as 273 mm (10.75 inches) and 419 mm (16.54 inches) of rain in 24 hours till 8:30 am IST (3 am GMT) on Monday, the weather office said.

Schools and other educational institutes were ordered to close in Himachal Pradesh and people in vulnerable areas were being moved to relief shelters, state officials said.

Uttarakhand state authorities announced that the Char Dham pilgrimage route would be closed until Tuesday following landslides.

Search For The Missing Continues After Maui Wildfires Kill 96

The death toll from the Maui wildfires reached 96 on Sunday as relatives of the missing frantically searched for signs their loved ones may still be alive, while survivors grappled with the scale of the disaster and sought solace at church services.

Days after the inferno destroyed much of the historic resort town of Lahaina on Tuesday and Wednesday, crews of firefighters were still battling flare-ups, and cadaver dogs were sifting through the town’s charred ruins in search of victims.

The death toll made the blaze Hawaii’s worst natural disaster, surpassing a tsunami that killed 61 people in 1960, a year after Hawaii became a U.S. state.

It was also the largest number of deaths from a U.S. wildfire since 1918, when 453 people died in the Cloquet fire in Minnesota and Wisconsin, according to data from the National Fire Protection Association.

Many of the survivors took to Sunday church services, including Akanesi Vaa, 38, who said her family got stuck in traffic while trying to escape the flames.

Vaa, her husband and her children aged 15, 13 and 9 fled on foot and jumped a fence to safety. Along the way, an elderly woman pleading for help handed her a baby to care for. The woman and her husband also made it over the fence.

“I think a lot of us needed to hear today’s message,” Vaa said after attending church at King’s Cathedral in Kahului.

“All these ashes are going to turn into beauty. I know Lahaina will come back ten times stronger.”

Scott Landis, pastor at Keawal’i Church, a United Church of Christ congregation in Makena, said an unusually large crowd of 100 showed, nearly double what he would have expected on a typical Sunday in August.

“They were really listening. You could tell people were here, looking for a word of hope,” Landis said.

Among them were people with family and friends unaccounted for, and “fearing the worst” he added.

People sifted through a crowd-sourced online database listing thousands of names of individuals who had been found, as well as of those who remained unaccounted for.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green warned at a press conference on Saturday the death toll would continue to climb as more victims were discovered. Dogs trained to detect bodies have covered only 3% of the search area, Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier said.

Family and friends mobilized on social media, asking for help in locating missing loved ones.

“Still searching for my in-laws,” Heather Baylosis wrote in a Saturday Instagram post. “People are being found alive and severely disoriented due to what they have gone through. We are holding out hope!”

Megan Sweeting wrote on her Facebook page, “MISSING: My Dad, Michael Misaka, has been missing since the Lahaina Fires started. If there is any information out there regarding my dad please let me know. I just need to know he is safe.”

Hundreds remained missing, though a precise count was unclear.

Nigeria Performs First Minimally Invasive Heart Surgeries on Four Patients

Nigeria has performed its first-ever minimally invasive open heart surgeries on four patients in a private hospital in Lagos.

The operations were coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) – Off-Pump and Mitral valve replacement carried out without big cuts on the chests, while the hearts were beating.

A renowned Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine, Kamar Adeleke, made this known to journalists in Lagos, revealing that one of the patients was an 81-year-old woman who needed a valve replacement.

He disclosed that the surgeries carried out by the Tristate Healthcare Systems, which is located Lekki, put Nigeria on the world map and on the list of the few countries in the developing world with the capacity to perform such surgical procedures.

Prof. Adeleke revealed that the facility had before now, carried out over 120 normal open heart surgeries nationwide.

According to him, before the minimally invasive open heart surgeries were performed, Nigerians could only get such delicate in the West,   India and South Africa.

He said explained that the facility uses minimally evasive techniques that have never been done in Nigeria, which minimises how much incision is made on the chest during open heart surgery and reduces the amount of blood lost by patient blood, less pain and time spent in the theatre.

“Apart from the fact that it is minimally invasive, we also did not stop the heart. The heart was beating while the blood vessels were bypassed.

“As a Nigerian that loves Nigeria, you can’t be happier that Nigeria can really do this, Nigeria can come out of a mess. When Nigeria puts its mind to something, it becomes doable.”

Exploring Brimstone Hill Fortress, Saint Kitts And Nevis

0

Brimstone Hill Fortress, also known as Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, is a historic fortress which has been preserved in well condition, located on a hill on the island of Saint Kitts, which is part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Being one of the most important historical, cultural and architectural monuments of the Caribbean island nation, it was built in 17 century by African slaves, while the island was under British mandate.

The fortress is considered to be a great monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it, and it is also a testimony to the European colonial expansion, the African slave trade and the emergence of new societies in the Caribbean area.

The first cannons were brought to the hill in 1690, when the British used them to recapture Fort Charles from the French, and since then the fortress has been under constant maintenance in order for the islands to remain under British rule.

In those days, the fort has been known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies, in reference to its imposing steepness and height, its proximity to the sea, and its seeming invulnerability, which is almost the same as Gibraltar in Europe.

There have been plenty of fights and sieges of the Brimstone Hill Fortress, however, in 1853 it was abandoned by the British when the structure began to decay through vandalism and natural processes.

That is why with the beginning of 20 century, the process of stabilization and restoration of the structures that remained started, and the first part of the fort which was completely restored, was opened in 1973 by Prince Charles, while later in 1985, Queen Elizabeth II unveiled a plaque with which the fortress was named as a National Park.

Still, the principal structures which are situated on different levels of the upper third of the hill were constructed in dressed stone blocks with a rubble core, and they are also decorated with local limestone which is used as a decoration for quoins and for facing round doorways and embrasures.

The heart of the fortress, Fort George also known as the Citadel, dominates one of the twin peeks, and due to the high importance the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park embraces, it has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999. Being one of the most important places on the main island, the fortress is visited more and more often by the people who are exploring the small island of Saint Kitts.

Taraba State University Bans Miniskirts, Face Caps, Others

0

The Management of the Taraba State University (TSU), has prohibited the wearing of miniskirts, face caps, shirts with rolled sleeves, and others, on campus, labelling them indecent attires.

This was stated in a circular issued by the school’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, ordering lecturers in the institution to start denying students access to lecture halls due to inappropriate clothing.

The VC also stated that the students had consistently disregarded the university’s dress code rules and regulations.

He also advised deans, department heads, and faculty officers to ensure that students dress appropriately within their respective colleges, schools, and faculties.

Henceforth, wearing transparent dresses, mini and skimpy dresses, and other clothes that reveal sensitive parts of the body are prohibited and were highlighted in the circular.

Students are also prohibited from wearing tattered and dirty jeans with holes or obscene subliminal messages; shirts without buttons; shirts that are improperly buttoned; rolling of sleeves or flying collar; and wearing of face caps or complete face covering with very dark glasses.”

Others include, “Wearing of tight-fitting apparels; wearing clothes that reveal sensitive parts of the body; wearing shirts and tops with obscene, obnoxious or seductive inscription “baggy, saggy or ass level clothes and any other form of indecent trousers and piercing of body and tattooing.”

Male students were barred from wearing earrings and necklaces, including plaiting, weaving or bonding of hair.  Female students were cautioned not to wear, “lousy, unkempt, extremely bogus hair or coloured artificial hair, brightly tinted hair/eyelashes/brown, fixing of long eyelashes, nails and artificial dreadlock.”

Monitoring reactions from social media, while a few people applauded the ban as necessary, others chastised the government for focusing on the wrong things, as our educational institutions still languished behind their peers globally.

Uganda Defiant After World Bank Halts Funding

0

Uganda has held their own, sticking to a decision to outlaw LGBTQ practices, making them punishable under the law, despite global lender, World Bank’s decision to halt further loans to the African country.

President Museveni says the country will reduce borrowing and not give in to pressure from foreign institutions.

Museveni criticized the World Bank’s decision to suspend new funding and has promised to find alternative sources of credit.

It is, therefore, unfortunate that the World Bank and other actors dare to want to coerce us into abandoning our faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money. They really underestimate all Africans,” he said.

Museveni said that if Uganda needs to borrow, it could tap into other sources and oil production expected to start by 2025 Would provide additional revenues.

Museveni has previously commented on the West’s blatant disrespect for Africa’s sovereignty. He cited the instance where NATO prevented African leaders from landing in Libya on a peacekeeping mission, on African soil.

Museveni described the incident as contemptuous.

The World Bank had said that the law contradicted its values and would suspend new funding until it could test measures to prevent discrimination in projects it finances.

“We believe our vision to eradicate poverty on a livable planet can only succeed if it includes everyone irrespective of race, gender, or sexuality. This law undermines those efforts. Inclusion and non-discrimination sit at the heart of our work around the world,” it said in a statement.

The World Bank has an existing portfolio of $5.2bn in Uganda, and these projects will not be affected.

The Ugandan government will ask parliament to vote on a revised budget for July 2023 to June 2024 to reflect the potential financial impact of the lending suspension, junior finance minister Henry Musasizi told parliament on Thursday.

CBN Investigator Probes Staff, Consultants, Others

0

Tensions are escalating in the financial circle as the current administration is determined to bring to book, those found wanting in the past nine years under the leadership of Godwin Emefiele at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Ex-Chief Executive of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), Jim Obazee, who was appointed “Special Investigator” of the CBN and related entities, now has an expanded team, with members drawn from diverse fields of expertise in the financial sector.

Besides the CBN, the team is also shining its searchlight on other institutions where CBN has substantial interests, particularly Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Limited and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems Plc.

Independent sources privy to the activities of the team said many officials of the Central Bank have been interrogated in the past few days even as the team is spreading its tentacles across the financial system.

The Presidency, through the Obazee-led team, is said to have started combing all relevant agencies for “co-conspirators” of the suspended CBN chief who had enriched themselves at the expense of the common good.

“In the coming weeks, heads will roll across the board. The level of rot seen in the system could not have been perpetrated by one man. If that is the case, those who work with him could not have been angels. I don’t know the scale of sanction that will follow but I can tell you that a lot of people will not go unpunished,” a source said over the weekend.

The source also disclosed that some individuals who consult for the monetary authority had been detained in the past week and released on bail.

Most stakeholders who spoke on the issue said it was not unlikely considering the determination of the President to go the whole block on the subject.

As at 2015, PwC and Ernst & Young (E&Y) served as external auditors to the bank. PwC was replaced by KPMG in 2016. In the past seven years, the duo of E&Y and KPMG have provided the service for the regulator, certifying the financials that are now being reviewed by Obazee and his team.

According to the letter of appointment of Obazee, the Special Investigator reports directly to the Office of the President. But beyond workings of the appointment, a source who is privy to the engagement said the appointee has “reasonably easy” access to the President for regular briefing and that his team is now touted as the arrowhead of the Tinubu’s “commitment to fighting financial fraud”.

An insider source said the President is leaving nothing to chance in bringing those believed to have been involved in the financial system manipulation in recent years to justice and that he has charged the Obazee-led team to go all out against concerned individuals and institutions in its assignment.

Whereas the team does not have persecutory powers, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is said to have been properly briefed on the “importance and urgency” of the team and directed to work with it where necessary.

The Presidency has been reasonably quiet on the ordeal of the suspended CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, speaking only once, when he described the financial system he supervised as “rotten”.
