The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says following the situation in Niger Republic, it has deployed personnel to check all the unorthodox roads through which foreigners may likely infiltrate.

Mr Mustapha Sani, the NIS Comptroller in charge of Jibia command, in Katsina State disclosed this at a joint celebration with the state’s command to commemorate the service at 60.

According to him, with the current situation, the borders have been closed, and there are restrictions on movement along the areas.

He, therefore, advised Nigerians who are planning to go to travel to Niger to stay safe at home, saying that only Nigerians that are returning home were allowed to cross the border.

“NIS has deployed its personnel to mount all the unorthodox roads through which some of the foreigners may likely infiltrate.

“You know Katsina and Niger Republic. We are a homogeneous society, with the same language, religion and culture, but we have a colonial boundary which we must respect.”

While addressing officers and men of the command, Sani said the service had been transformed to modern immigration, with Nigerian passports among the best in the world.

He said that the Nigerian passport was well protected with a lot of security features that made it impossible to be forged, because of its biometric nature and also personalised.

“There’s no way one can use your passport because God has created us unique, especially with our fingerprints.

“Katsina State is among the only two states in the country with special border Command, saying that they are using MIDAS for registration of passengers.

“As it is now, we are trying to have an E-border, just recently our ICT officers came to the command for a survey, so that they can come and install some of the gadgets.

Nigeria has disconnected the supply of 150 megawatts, MW of electricity daily to Niger as part of efforts by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to restore democracy in that nation. The disconnection was effected by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, directly involved in the transmission of power on Tuesday night. The managing director/CEO of TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, did not respond when Vanguard called repeatedly, yesterday.

But a source in the organisation, who pleaded anonymity, said: “It is true Niger was disconnected from the national grid last night based on the instruction of the government. Nigeria used to supply 150 megawatts, MW of power to Niger. Meanwhile, Military chiefs from the ECOWAS regional bloc on Wednesday said military intervention in junta-ruled Niger was “the last resort”.

An ECOWAS team headed by former Nigerian leader Abdulsalami Abubakar was in Niger to “negotiate”, added Musah, speaking at the start of a three-day meeting of the grouping’s military chiefs in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, said yesterday his country was in support of the position taken by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, on the military coup in Niger Republic, which led to the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum.

Recall that ECOWAS Heads of State had last Sunday, given the coup plotters seven days to restore President Bazoum to power or face military action.

2023 polls: INEC has nothing to hide — Yakubu

0

The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said, contrary to what some people may think, the commission has nothing to hide regarding the conduct of the 2023 general elections.

Speaking yesterday during the INEC’s review of the 2023 general elections with the Media in Lagos, Yakubu insisted that many positive things came out of the polls.

He said: “There is a long-standing partnership between the commission and the media. The media remains one of our critical stakeholders. The media covers both our elections and our electoral activities. We knew that you were citizens first and foremost before you answered your professional call. We considered your opinion important to the electoral process.

“This is an opportunity for the media executives in the various organizations to tell us what they have seen and how we can continue to improve the electoral process in the future.

“The commission has nothing to hide, and it is through this type of interaction that we continuously improve the process for future elections.

“There are many positives coming from the general elections, and at the same time, we admit that there were many challenges in the last election.

On her part, INEC’s Monitoring Planning and Strategy Committee Chair, Professor Rhoda Gumus, while commending the media on their role in stabilizing the electoral process, noted that “the media play a vital role in the electoral process in information dissemination; without the media, guiding the credibility of the electoral process would be a difficult task.

It is the commission’s policy to organize post-election reviews after successful elections, and the 2023 general election cannot be an exception. The purpose of the meeting is to undertake a comprehensive review of the issues, challenges, and evaluation of the 2023 general election and to learn critical lessons. The review meeting is designed to get feedback from the media and also highlight how the media and INEC can work together to ensure the nation’s stability during and after elections.”

Breastfeeding: Governors’ Wives Seek Enactment of 6months Maternity Leave Policy

0

The Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum and other stakeholders on Tuesday called for the implementation of six months maternity leave policy to encourage exclusive breastfeeding in the country.

The wife of the Kwara state governor, Dr. Olufolake Abdulrazak, who represented the NGWF, stated this during a briefing ceremony organised by the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners in Abuja in commemoration of the 2023 World Breastfeeding.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a Difference for Working Parents.’’

Mrs. Abdulrazak said the forum will partner with others to champion the advocacy, which will improve the health and well-being of mother and child, as well as eliminate malnutrition in the country, thereby reducing the infant mortality rate.

She acknowledged the challenges working mothers face to provide the best care for their children and stressed the need for implementation of policies that will ensure babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months and complementary fed for at least two years.

Mrs. Abdulrazak said, “Breastfeeding plays an integral part in the healthy development of infants and we must all come together to create an enabling environment that supports and encourages this natural practice.

“In the NGWF, we are wholeheartedly dedicated to championing the cause of breastfeeding and improving the lives of women and children across our nation.

“We are proud to announce that we have taken a significant step forward by signing a statement of commitment to provide support through effective advocacies for improved nutrition in the country.’’

While advocating for realistic budgeting, and timely release of funds for nutrition, Mrs. Abdulrazak said the NWGF was committed to creating awareness on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, the establishment of creches in workspaces and advocating for six months of paid maternity leave.

On the issue of the prevalence of malaria, she disclosed that the disease went down in Kwara state to 20 per cent, which was lower than the 26 per cent recorded at the national average level.

UNICEF’s Chief Nutrition Officer, Dr. Nemat Hajeebhoy, said a child’s development is not complete at birth, but rather breastmilk facilitates the completion of the development, especially the brain.

She noted that the Convention on Child Rights stipulates their rights to access adequate nutrition, which begins at birth within the first hour of breastfeeding, stressing that it is very essential and serves as the first immunisation.

“It is the act of breastfeeding and the breast milk that enables growth for babies. A child’s development is not completed at birth; it is the breastmilk that helps the completion, especially in brain development.

“So enabling mothers and babies to be together once the child is born is no longer in the womb is each of our responsibility,’’ she said.

Dr. Hajeebhoy explained that Nigeria had over 18 million employed women, but only nine per cent of organisations offer breastfeeding support, hence the need for employers to implement policies that would promote breastfeeding.

“We are asking employers to offer six months maternity leave, set up safe spaces in the offices so that a mother can go and breastfeed her child and offer some flexible working arrangement.’’

Also, the Country Representative, World Health Organisation, Dr. Walter Mulombo, said the 2023 WBW theme aims at raising awareness and to galvanize action that enables breastfeeding in the workspace.

“Enabling breastfeeding and supporting working parents is crucial for promoting optimum breastfeeding practices and ensuring the health and well-being for both infants and mothers.

“Support for breastfeeding increases women’s work motivation, attendance, satisfaction and productivity.

“It also provides vital health and nutritional benefits for children with positive lifelong impacts. Women shouldn’t be left to choose between breastfeeding their children and their jobs,’’ he said.

Country Director, Nutrition International, Dr. Osita Okonkwo, said the organisation with support from partners in 2022, distributed over 20 million vitamin A supplements to states and has earmarked over 22 million to improve nutrition and reduce the prevalence of child and maternal mortality.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Adebiyi Folorunsho, while highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding, said only nine per cent of organisations in the country have a workplace breastfeeding policy.

Represented by Mrs. Boladale Alonge, Director in the ministry, he said breastfeeding provides energy, and nutrients for a child’s development and prevents the burden of malnutrition infectious diseases and mortality, while also reducing the risk of obesity and chronic diseases in later life.

He added that breastfeeding mothers are also protected from chronic diseases including breast and ovarian cancer, Type 2 diabetes, increases productivity at the workplace and saves monetary expenses.

“Evidence has shown that women need adequate time and support to practice optimal breastfeeding. Lack of support in the workplace is one of the reasons, why women stop breastfeeding early,’’ he added.

President Tinubu made the call on Wednesday when he received the United Kingdom’s Secretary of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Rt Hon. James Cleverly MP, in his office.

While addressing the pressing issue of energy transition and the opportunity for economic growth in Africa and Nigeria, President Tinubu charged the Foreign Secretary on the imperatives of the West and UK, in particular, in mobilising investment to pipe gas from Nigeria to Europe.

On democracy, peace and stability in West Africa, President Tinubu noted that security would remain a challenge as long as there are unstable governments in the sub-region.

He used the opportunity of the visit to decry the situation in Niger, the Sahel region and Horn of Africa where terrorists are finding comfort, asking the government of UK to support Nigeria to secure West Africa.

In his remarks, Rt Hon. Cleverly congratulated the President on his election victory and the steps he has taken so far to reform the economy. He saluted President Tinubu for taking bold and decisive actions on fuel subsidy removal and on multiple foreign exchange markets which he pointed out will bring development to the country in spite of the current pains.

Turkish Tourism Revenues Leap 23% In 2nd Quarter

0

Turkiye’s tourism revenues jumped 23.1%to $12.98 billion in the second quarter, Turkish Statistical Institute data showed, maintaining a strong trend in the sector.

Revenues in 2022 surged 53.4pc from the previous year to a record high of $46.28bn as lingering effects of the pandemic disappeared and fallout from the Ukraine war drove a rise in Russian arrivals.

Meanwhile, European travel stocks stumbled into some profit-taking as earnings season kicked off and extreme weather hit in July, but many investors are betting relatively attractive valuations and solid demand will keep supporting the sector.

An index of European travel and leisure stocks STXE 600 has risen 33pc over the last year, beating even market favourites like luxury and defence and racing over 23 percentage points ahead of the broader market.

The index has fallen slightly from its May peaks, but is still one of the best performers this year, thanks to sharper price increases in items like airline tickets and hotel rates as Covid-19 curbs were phased out ahead of the summer holidays.

Airlines, cruise operators and hotel owners have been key beneficiaries, but so have aircraft and engine-makers. The recovery in long-haul flying helped Rolls-Royce lift its full-year forecasts, sending its shares up over 20pc on Wednesday.

The number of restriction-free countries has risen three-fold in one year to above 180 and international tourist arrivals are closing in on pre-pandemic levels, according to data from the World Tourism Organization. Europe is among the regions with most progress.

Traders still see more opportunities ahead, even as markets face growing macro uncertainty and Europe grapples with extreme weather.

Goldman Sachs expects significant upgrades to consensus earnings estimates this year.
