Germany’s Rhine River Levels In Rise After Rain

0

Heavy rain has raised water levels on the river Rhine in Germany enabling normal shipping in some areas, but the river is still too shallow in northern areas for cargo vessels to sail fully loaded, commodity traders said on Friday.

Dry weather in June meant the river became too shallow for vessels to sail fully loaded and ship operators imposed surcharges on freight rates to compensate for vessels sailing partly empty, increasing costs for cargo owners.

“Rain has prevented a crisis in shipping so far this year,” one trader said. “River water levels are falling regularly but also rising regularly so cargo is being delivered but with extra costs for industry.”

Water levels at the chokepoint of Kaub have risen sharply after hitting their lowest so far this year earlier this week and have now reached levels allowing full vessel loadings, they said.

The Rhine is still too shallow for normal sailings in northern areas around Cologne and Duisburg. Some vessels, depending on the type, can only sail less than half full in northern regions, the traders said. More rain in the coming days could provide further improvement.

German industry is finding new ways to transport cargoes from coal to chemicals as increasingly frequent low water levels on the Rhine disrupt Europe’s largest economy, major cargo shippers told Reuters.

The Rhine is an important shipping route for commodities such as grains, minerals, coal and oil products, including heating oil. German companies faced supply bottlenecks and production problems in the summer of 2022 after a drought and heat wave led to unusually low water levels on the Rhine.

Greek Wildfires Die Down After Burning For Nearly Two Weeks

0

Wildfires in Greece abated on Friday after burning for nearly two weeks but emergency services worked to prevent new flare-ups in the central part of the country, where people had fled massive explosions at an ammunition depot the day before.

The blazes, fanned by rising temperatures and strong winds, have killed five people, destroyed homes, farms and factories and scorched swathes of forest land since July 17.

In the hard-hit area of Magnesia, wildfires reached an air force ammunition depot close to the coastal town of Nea Aghialos on Thursday.

The blaze at the depot caused powerful explosions and the coast guard said people were forced to escape by land and sea to Volos, the regional capital.

Fighter jets stationed at a nearby military airport were moved as a precaution, a government official said.

The shockwave was felt miles away, causing glass windows of several shops to shatter, locals told Reuters.

“They’ve split open, they peeled off, the panels have fallen, they are split open, only metal is left, the ironwork,” said Dina Angeli, a local resident in Nea Aghialos.

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said on Friday he had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Firefighters made a “superhuman effort” but failed to tame the rekindling blazes in the wider area of Volos and in Aghialos, fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios said.

Dozens of firefighters worked in the area, assisted by five aircraft and a helicopter, as strong winds could cause new flare-ups, the fire brigade said.

The labour ministry urged employers in an industrial zone of Volos to suspend operations for a second day on Friday.

On the island of Rhodes, where more than 20,000 tourists and locals fled seaside hotels and houses over the weekend, wildfires have died down after scorching about 10% of the island’s acreage. But teams operated at several sites for an 11th day in an effort to fully tame all the fronts.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday that Greece needed to take more steps to combat the effects of climate change, stressing the need to improve fire prevention further.

UK Transportation: Vegetable Oil Fuels Chiltern Railways Trains

0

Passenger trains are being fuelled by vegetable oil for the first time in the UK, a train operator has said.

Chiltern Railways began using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to power some of its fleet on Thursday.

HVO is made mostly of used cooking oils and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, compared to diesel.

Richard Allan, managing director, said the operator was determined to operate a railway that was “easier, greener and better” for its customers.

The train operator, which runs services between Birmingham and London, is using the biofuel, which is more expensive than diesel, to power its Class 68 locomotives as part of efforts to decarbonise its operations.

Mr Allan said the conversion in fuel would make a “big difference” and would help to minimise the impact of trains on the environment.

Scientists Say July Recorded As World’s Warmest Month

0

Amid blistering heatwaves, July is “virtually certain” to be the world’s warmest month on record, say scientists.

So hot has the month been to date that researchers are confident the 2019 record will be broken, even with several days to go.

Scientists agree the extra heat is mainly linked to fossil fuel use.

Some experts believe that July might well be the warmest month in the past 120,000 years.

Researchers are not surprised that July is set to break the current record for the warmest month as there have been plenty of indications in recent weeks that the world is seeing far greater levels of heating.

The world’s warmest day occurred on July 6, and the hottest 23 days ever recorded were all this month, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Exploring Reclining Liberty, U.S.A.

0

The Reclining Liberty is a remarkable sculpture and statue that changes its locations from time to time, and it was located previously Harlem’s Morningside Park, and it is also found in the Liberty State Park of Jersey City, in the northern part of the State of New Jersey, within the northeastern part of the United States of America.

Quite fascinating is that the location is changing and the statue is moving, so from its first point at Le Petit Senegal in the State of New York, it was moved to this important place in New Jersey, and it is yet to be moved again.

As the statue was designed by the Chinese artist Zhan Wang, it depicts the iconic American symbol of freedom, the very famous Statue of Liberty, however, in a way more relaxed, reclined position.

Created in 2018, the Reclining Liberty statue is a recent addition to the small park, which is also home to the famous Statue of Liberty National Monument, but the difference comes in the materials used to construct this artistic sculpture, where the sculpture is made from polished stainless steel, which reflects the surrounding skyline and adds to its impressive appearance.

As it measures 17 m (55 ft) in length, the Reclining Liberty statue is a monumental work of art that can be seen and recognized from a distance as well, and its detailed features, including the crown and torch, are rendered in stunning detail, making it a breathtaking sight to behold.

Since the statue was created as a tribute to the Statue of Liberty and the ideals it represents, such as freedom, democracy, and opportunity, the artist was inspired by the iconic pose of its counterpart and he certainly wanted to create a work of art that would pay homage to this symbol of American identity.

Serving as an important addition to Liberty State Park, not only as a work of art but also as a symbol of the enduring values that the original statue represents, it is thought that the Reclining Liberty also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy, and it underscores the importance of preserving these values for future generations.

The Reclining Liberty statue is a stunning work of art that captures the spirit of the Statue of Liberty in a unique and captivating way, while its size, materials, and intricate details make it a remarkable addition to the world-famous state park, and its message of freedom and democracy is more important than ever in today’s world.

In his remarks, Abbas said there were no grade ‘A’ or juicy committees. He added that the status of every chairman was equal, warning that they must carry all the members of the committee along. He said: “My dear Colleagues, you would recall that the leadership of the House has consistently assured members of its resolve to be fair to all, irrespective of political leanings and affiliations. There are no grade ‘A’ nor the so-called ‘juicy committees’ as some erroneously often think. Every committee of the House enjoys equal status, powers, and privileges as mere working groups to discharge the mandate given to us by our constituents.

“The committee system, aptly described as little legislatures by Woodrow Wilson, plays a crucial role in legislative bodies worldwide. Indeed, it serves as the fulcrum of the Legislature due to its central role in performing the bulk of legislative responsibilities and tasks. This system involves dividing the Legislature into smaller component units or working groups, which aims to enhance efficiency, improve productivity, facilitate legislative oversight of other branches of government, promote citizens’ participation in legislation, and enable detailed scrutiny of legislative instruments such as Bills and Motions.

“Let me state unequivocally that all members of Committees have equal status and must be carried along as such. Committee Chairmen are only administrative heads who must ensure the involvement of every member in the activities of Committees. The principle of teamwork should guide our engagements in these committees.

“Committee Chairmen must ensure that there are functional secretariats for their respective committees. This is very crucial as the House is redefining legislative work at the Committees. All Committees are now required to submit regular reports of their activities to the leadership of the House on a quarterly basis. Investigative hearings, public hearings, and reports from oversight functions have to be submitted to the House in plenary for further legislative action. Accordingly, the Committees should draw up their work plans and submit same to the Leadership of the House.”

Giving the appointees charge, Abbas asked them to be diligent and transparent in the discharge of their duties.

Facts about Tinubu’s Ministerial Nominee List Batch A

0

Eleven states of the federation will have to wait as President Bola Tinubu forwarded a list of 28 ministerial nominees through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila to the Senate for screening and confirmation, yesterday.

The states that have to wait are Adamawa, Bayelsa, Gombe, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Plateau, Lagos, Osun, Yobe, and Zamfara.

Tinubu’s ministerial list is dominated by former governors, ex-senators, House of Representatives members and strong political allies believed to have worked for his victory at the polls.

The number of names sent was 28, with no state of origin attached and with a promise that more names would follow soon, as Adamawa, Kogi, Lagos, Anambra and Bayelsa states are missing from the list.

On the list is the current acting National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and Senator Abubakar Kyari, who represented Borno North in the 8th and 9th Senate.

Also on the list is Senator John Enoh, who represented Cross River Central in the 8th Senate, and Senator Abubakar Sani Danladi who was former acting governor and deputy governor of Taraba State.

However, Danladi was impeached by Taraba State House of Assembly on September 4, 2012, and replaced by Alhaji Umar Garba as deputy governor, who later became the acting governor of the state after the air crash that claimed the life of former Danbaba Suntai.

On the list are former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Nkiru Onyejiocha, who represented Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi federal constituency, Abia State; Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, who represented Akoko North East/ North West federal constituency, Ondo State.

He was the chairman House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC; Abubakar Momoh, a two-time member of the House of Representatives who represented Etsako federal constituency, Edo State, and Ekperikpe Ekpo, who represented Abak federal constituency from 2007 and 2011 from Akwa Ibom State.

A former All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Barrister Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, made the list.

Former Executive Director, NEXIM Bank, Stella Okotete, from Delta State, and the Special Adviser to the President on Communication, Strategy and Special Duties, Dele Alake, from Ekiti State also made the list.

Alake is a close ally of President Tinubu. Former Commissioner in Lagos, Wale Edu, from Ogun

A surprise package on the ministerial list is the Publisher of Blue Print Newspapers, Mohammed Idris, from Niger State.

One of the lead counsels in Tinubu’s case at the election petition tribunal, Lateef Fagbemi, from Kwara State, and Accord Party’s governorship candidate in Oyo State, Waheed Adebayo Adelabu, also made the list.

Also on the list is Professor Joseph Utsev, a very close ally of the Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, and the Rector, of Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, Akume’s hometown in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.

Meanwhile, the Senate has suspended its annual long recess that would have commenced yesterday to begin the screening of the ministerial nominees next Monday.

APC risks collapse – Former Vice Chair

0

The immediate past National Vice Chairman, Northwest, of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Salihu Lukman, who resigned on Wednesday in protest against the recent turn of events in the party, said yesterday that the imposition of the former governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, as national chairman would lead the party to damnation.

Although Lukman resigned on Wednesday, his resignation has not been accepted by his colleagues in the National Working Committee, NWC.

“Perhaps, it is important to clarify that this is not in any way questioning the authority of President Bola Tinubu as the moral leader of the party. Being the moral leader of the party doesn’t give him the power of exercising statutory functions of organs of the party or unilaterally changing provisions of the party’s constitution.

”It will amount to setting President Tinubu for failure in the worse possible way to proceed to encourage him to act in a manner that is illegal and immoral.

”If the scheming to have Dr. Ganduje emerge as the next national chairman of APC succeeds with all the legal and moral questions, as a party, we would have set the stage for the destruction of our party and God forbids, we would have laid the foundation that will make President Tinubu and all our elected representatives unpopular,” he stated.

In an “explanatory note” sequel to his resignation, Lukman said he was tired of fighting for reforms in the APC. While he conceded that President Bola Tinubu remained the leader and moral compass of the party, Lukman, however, cautioned him against submitting to the temptation of becoming a champion of illegality and repression.

He said:  “Painful as it is, I want to appeal to President Bola Tinubu and all our leaders to resist the temptations that would protect our party and our leaders as champions of illegality and repression.”

Equities Market Again Closed on Red Zone by 0.31%

Nigeria’s equities market closed further in the red zone on Thursday by 0.31 percent, the second time this week since the Central Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) raised its benchmark interest rate known as the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 25 basis points to 18.75 percent.

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) All-Share Index and equities market capitalisation decreased on Thursday from 65,687.16 points and N35.745trillion respectively to 65,482.91 points and N35.634trillion.

Investors lost about N111billion at the close of trading. Again on the sell-side of Thursday’s trading includes Cadbury which decreased from N15.30 to N13.80, after losing N1.50 or 9.80 percent.

Other major laggards are Japaul Gold which dropped from N1.11 to N1, losing 11kobo or 9.91percent; FTN Cocoa which dropped from N2.66 to N2.41, losing 25kobo or 9.40 percent and Neimeth which was also down from N1.82 to N1.65, shedding 17kobo or 9.34 percent.

The equities market’s positive return year-to-date (YtD) stood lower at +27.77 percent.

In their July 27 stock recommendation, Futureview analysts said that, “Considering that there are many stocks trading at attractive discount, we expect a mixed sentiment in the market this week”.

Japaul Gold UBA, Transcorp, FCMB and Fidelity Bank were actively traded stocks as investors in 8,070 deals exchanged 509,247,334 shares worth

N4.795billion.

United Capital research analysts in their post-MPC commentary said the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is not expected to cause a slowdown in equities in the short term.

“Additionally, a bullish corporate earnings performance in second-quarter (Q20 2023 and lower fixed-income yields are anticipated to trigger the usual asset rotation seen during a significant decline in interest rates. These factors are expected to provide strong support for Nigerian equities, leading to a favourable market performance,” United Capital analysts said.
