Speaker Abbas is to meet resident doctors, and others on Thursday

0

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen will again, on Thursday, meet with relevant stakeholders over the crisis between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). Majority Leader of the House, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, made this known at the plenary on Wednesday, which the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, presided over.

The meeting will be coming after Speaker Abbas met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, in fulfillment of his promise to NARD earlier on Monday, as part of the efforts of the House to resolve the crisis.
This was contained in a press statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, House of Representatives Musa KrishI.

According to KRISHI, At the plenary on Wednesday, the leadership of the House expressed displeasure with NARD’s decision to continue with its planned strike despite the intervention by the Parliament.

A member of the House, Hon. Unyime Idem, during the plenary, attempted to move a motion of urgent public importance on the strike declared by NARD on Tuesday night. The immediate past Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ahmed Wase, however, raised a point of order to note that the Speaker was already working on the matter.

The Majority Leader, in his explanation, noted that the House’s interventionist moves would continue despite that the resident doctors have downed tools.

Prof Ihonvbere said: “As Rt. Hon. Wase explained, the Speaker had a meeting with the NARD and some stakeholders (on Monday) on this issue and pleaded with the union to hold on, to the strike, and give the House two weeks to resolve the matter; and the two weeks were to include this visit to Mr President to bring him up to date on the relevant issues. He also set up an ad hoc committee which is being chaired by my humble self to hold dialogues with the critical stakeholders.

“I want to inform (the House and the public) that Mr. Speaker has since met with Mr President and significant progress in terms of addressing the needs of the doctors that are now on strike. Second, we have scheduled a meeting for tomorrow with all the stakeholders, including members of the NARD. So, discussions are on.

“(Former Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services) Dr. Tanko Sununu is here and he has been in touch with the NARD President, and they are going to be at this meeting tomorrow along with other stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, the Accountant-General of the Federation; Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning; even the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

The Deputy Speaker who presided over the session noted that the motion of urgent public importance showed that “we are sensitive to the needs of Nigerians,” adding that, “We are not asleep where Nigerians are panicking on issues bothering their health.”

Commenting after Hon. Idem stepped down the motion to allow the House leadership’s intervention, Kalu said: “Let me say this to the medical officers who are striking: The fact that the highest level of the parliament has started engaging with you shows how important your demands are. It shows how seriously we have taken your issues. I want to urge you to exercise more patience.

“You have heard the chairman of the ad hoc committee that was set up by Mr. Speaker to look into this, stating publicly that we would be engaging with you tomorrow. Kindly oblige the Speaker of the House who is making efforts to see that the Executive arm attends to your reasonable needs. This is my appeal from the House and I pray that the striking officers from the medical sector would consider this, as we also pledge to make sure that you are not ignored in your quest to have a better working condition in serving our people.”

Ministerial List will be out today?

0

Barring any last-minute change, President Bola Tinubu will, today, send the list of ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation, LN247 has learned.

Top on the list for screening is the immediate past Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufia, current Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Dele Alake, former governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, Wale Edun, and immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, Adebayo Adelabu, and Beta Edu. Names will be submitted today. Adelabu was the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, while Edu was Commissioner for Health in Cross River State and National Woman Leader of APC.

Different purported ministerial lists have been in circulation as the President kept Nigerians guessing.

LN247 has learned that former governors, technocrats, and professionals are on the list. It was further gathered that to form a government of national unity, as speculated in some quarters, the President will accommodate some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that President Tinubu took the oath of office on May 29, when former President Muhammadu Buhari handed over the mantle of leadership to him and was expected to form his cabinet within 60 days of resuming office, in accordance with the constitution.

Subsidy Removal: We’re Working to Address Issues, FG Appeals to NLC

0

The federal government has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC to shelve its planned strike scheduled to start next Wednesday, saying it was doing everything possible to address issues raised by the labour movement on the removal of fuel subsidy.

The appeal came against the backdrop of the strike notice announced by the labour movement giving the federal government a 7-day ultimatum to address what it described as anti-people policies or face industrial action.

Speaking after the Steering Committee meeting on Palliatives, the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen pleaded with labour to give the federal government more time to look into its grievances, rather than embark on industrial action.

She explained that the government was yet to roll out palliatives because it did not want to make mistakes, adding that the meeting with organised labour was productive.

However, the labour unions said they would still embark on the planned strike and mass protests should the government fail to meet its demands. Recall that the NLC in a communiqué at the end of its Central Working Committee, CWC, meeting held Tuesday, July 25, at Labour House, Abuja, also demanded the immediate inauguration of the Presidential Steering Committee as agreed in their earlier engagements.

Niger soldiers declare coup on national TV

The coup in Niger has succeeded with soldiers announcing on national TV the dissolution of the constitution, Aljazeera reported. With this, Niger becomes the sixth country in the West Africa sub-region to experience a coup since August 2020.

Led by Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, the soldiers announced they had carried out a coup and closed all West African borders.

In a statement broadcast on national television and quoted by Aljazeera, Mr. Abdramane said that “the defense and security forces … have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with”.

The attempted coup in Niger where the presidential palace was blocked by soldiers with President Mohammed Bazoum believed to be held inside the palace.

World leaders including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu have condemned the coup and noted that it will not be tolerated.

The US, France, UN, ECOWAS, and African Union also condemned the coup calling for a return to the status quo. There have also been protests by citizens of Niger who are against the coup.

On Wednesday, ECOWAS, led by Mr Tinubu, sent the President of Benin, Patrice Talon, to Niger to mediate in the crisis.

Mr. Talon had briefly met with Mr. Tinubu in Abuja before leaving for Niger.

It was not clear at the time of this report if Mr. Talon had met the coup leaders or ousted President Mohammed Bazoum.

2023 Wwc: Super Falcons Good Enough To Beat Australia – Coach Waldrum

0

Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum believes his side have what it takes to beat Australia in their Group B clash at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Waldrum’s side will take on the Matildas in their second game in the competition on Thursday.

The game is billed for the Brisbane Stadium.

The encounter represents another tough test for the Super Falcons following last Friday’s 0-0 draw against Canada.

Waldrum stated that his team had the quality to beat the co-hosts.

“It’s a very, very difficult group. So you’re not going to be putting in four or five goals a game in this kind of group,” the American told a press conference.

‘So I’m not worried about that. We have quality in the team, we have players that can score goals and we just have to make sure when those opportunities come that we’re clinical.”

2023 Women’s World Cup: Three Teams Sent Packing From Tournament

0

At least three teams have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

They are Costa Rica, Zambia, and the Republic of Ireland.

Costa Rica and Zambia have been sent packing from the tournament after losing their first two Group C fixtures.

Spain and Japan will now play for the top spot after winning two matches each.

Ireland’s exit was confirmed after they lost 2-1 to Canada. They had been defeated 1-0 by co-hosts Australia in their opening fixture.

Their last game will be against Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

Canada Find Their Feet In 2-1 Win; Oust Gutsy Ireland

0

An accurate toe-poke by forward Adriana Leon coupled with a touch of fortune allowed Canada to secure a 2-1 victory against Ireland on Wednesday, their first of this year’s Women’s World Cup, in wet and windy conditions at Perth Oval.

Fresh off a scoreless draw with Nigeria, Canada put themselves ahead in the match when Leon found the back of the net in the 53rd minute as her side increasingly exerted their dominance over a plucky Irish outfit.

In an exciting first half that had attacking play at both ends, Ireland captain Katie McCabe opened the scoring with a fourth minute corner that curled through the air and into the net, giving the girls in green their first-ever World Cup goal.

Canada worked diligently but failed to convert their first genuine chance in the 30th minute when Vanessa Gilles put too much on a chip within the six-yard box.

Some luck fell the way of the Olympic champions, though, when they equalised on the cusp of halftime, a powerful cross from midfielder Julia Grosso deflecting off Ireland’s Megan Connolly for an own goal in driving rain.

The second half grew into an arm-wrestle, but McCabe battled hard and created two opportunities late in the game which missed the target.

The 40-year-old Christine Sinclair, brought on after the break, found few chances near goal and will have to wait until Canada’s clash with co-hosts Australia in Melbourne on Monday to potentially become the first player to score at six World Cups.

Ireland, who cannot progress to the knockout stage having also lost their opener against Australia, play their final match against Nigeria in Brisbane.

Statistics Ahead Of Super Falcons Crunchy Match Against Co-Hosts, Australia’s Matildas

0

Joint-hosts Australia got their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 campaign off to a promising start with an opening victory against the Republic of Ireland, and they will be looking to build on that against Nigeria as they bid to take a big step towards qualification for the knockout stage.

Nigeria claimed an excellent goalless draw against Olympic champions Canada in their tournament curtain raiser, a result that will give them plenty of confidence coming into this encounter.

That was the Super Falcons’ first scoreless stalemate in 27 FIFA Women’s World Cup outings, and they will be eager to produce another solid defensive display against the Matildas in Brisbane/Meaanjin.

The two teams have met once before – back in the group stage of the 2015 edition – and it was Australia who emerged victorious on that occasion thanks to two unanswered goals from Kyah Simon.

Australia Vs Nigeria: How Super Falcons May Line Out Against Matildas

0

In the last four games for the Falcons, Waldrum has deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation parading a double #6 and a standing striker upfront

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will be playing a crucial and tricky game against co-host Australia on Thursday by 11 a.m.

While the game means a lot for the Nigerian side to be in a comfortable position for a next round qualification, Randy Waldrum, must also be conscious of his lineup against the Aussie.

In the last four games for the Falcons, Waldrum has deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation parading a double #6 and a standing striker upfront. Moreso, the American also uses offensive fullbacks to support his six-woman attacking style.

As the build-up to Thursday’s game continues, here is a peep into the 11-woman squad expected to start against Australia on Thursday.

Chiamaka Nnadozie

The stand-in captain against Canada undoubtedly will start against Australia hoping for another clean sheet. She looks calm, especially under pressure and she’s an elite goalkeeper and her ball usage skills would be key for Nigeria to unlock the cryptic defence of the Australians.

Onome Ebi and Ohale partnership

After sitting out the first game against Canada, Waldrum may likely call on the experienced Ebi to start against the Australians. But the relationship between Ohale and Blessing Demehin looks perfect for a counter kind of team.

However, Waldrum from the history might be interested in banking the heart of the defence on his skipper Ebi and Ohale who both played against Australia eight years ago.

Ashleigh Plumptre and Michelle Alozie as fullbacks

Certainly, Pumptre will get her second start in the World Cup as a result of her quick adaptation to Randy Wadrum’s 4-2-3-1 formation. And the reason for both players is for quick stimulations into attack in an inverted format. They are also fluidic in their approach with ball.

Christy Ucheibe and Halimatu Ayinde

Halimatu is back from her suspension and Deborah Abiodun has gone for a red card offence, which means she will start alongside Ucheibe in the double-woman midfield of Waldrum’s formation. Ucheibe is very mobile and her impact closes loose ends especially for Alozie whenever she overlaps for a potential offensive drive.

For Ayinde, her experience and physicality will help to get the team compact against the Aussies. However, Ucheibe will miss the partnership of Abiodun whom they have both played a couple of games together.

Trio of Rasheedat Ajibade, Toni Payne and Ifeoma Onumonu

Ajibade is set to take Ordega’s spot and the reason is to utilise creativity both from the flanks and midfield with Toni Payne. The defensive-minded Onumonu might help the wing cover up when the Falcons put in an all-five-woman attack comprising both fullbacks.

Asisat Oshoala

Oshoala needs to double her hustle in front of goal, meanwhile, Ajibade in her team would be instrumental for her getting counters and making runs behind Australian defenders.

W’World Cup: Pres. Tinubu Throws Weight Behind Super Falcons Against Co-Hosts Australia

0

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday in Abuja extended his best wishes to the Super Falcons as they prepare to face Australia in their second group match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

“He firmly believes that the upcoming match on Thursday will be a thrilling encounter that will culminate in victory for the Nigerian team,” a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Dele Alake, revealed on Wednesday.

The statement is titled ‘Message to Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.’

Following a goalless draw against Canada, the Super Falcons will face co-host nation Australia in their second Group B match at the Lang Park Stadium on Thursday, July 27, at 11 a.m. (Nigeria time).

The Matildas of Australia currently top the group with three points, with Nigeria and Canada on one point apiece.

The Aussies defeated the Nigerian women when both teams met at the 2015 edition of the competition.

However, the nine-time African champions and their millions of fans expect victory in Thursday’s encounter.

Alake said Tinubu is confident that the blending of new talents with seasoned veterans will propel Nigeria’s success in women’s football to even greater heights in this tournament.

Like other football-loving Nigerians, the President “takes immense pride in the Super Falcons’ impressive performance in the opening match against Canada, a formidable opponent and the reigning Olympic Champion,” the statement revealed.

Tinubu assured the players and the coaching crew of the enthusiastic support of all Nigerians.

He also urged the team to continue exemplifying Nigeria’s spirit of determination and excellence both on and off the pitch, serving as worthy ambassadors of the nation
