Presidential Poll: Atiku tells court to affirm INEC’s claim of victory in 21 states

1

Former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has asked the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, sitting in Abuja, to declare that he won the presidential election held on February 25, in 21 states.

Atiku, in a final written address he filed through his team of lawyers led by Chief Chris Uche, SAN, said his claim was based on a reply the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, filed in response to the petition he filed to nullify President Bola Tinubu’s election.

He contended the electoral body, in its own final brief of argument, neither disputed, retracted, debunked nor claimed that the averment it made in its reply was in error.

Atiku told the court that INEC had in its reply to his petition, confirmed him as the winner of the presidential contest in Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara state.

The former Vice President argued that since the electoral body, in its process, asserted that he won the election in 21 states and since it did not rebut the assertion throughout the proceedings, the court should proceed to uphold the declaration.

Atiku’s final written address, read in part: “Very importantly, the 1st Respondent (INEC) who conducted the election, made an open admission in paragraph 18 of its Reply to the petition, where it unequivocally stated thus:

“The 1st Respondent further avers that in compliance with extant laws and regulations, it diligently discharged its duties when it collated the 1st Petitioner’s scores at the Election which aggregates to 6,984,520 winning only 21 States to wit: Adamawa, Akwa Ibom. Bauchi. Bavelsa. Borno, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina. Kebbi. Kogi. Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.”

“Indeed, as admitted by the 1st Respondent (INEC), the 1st Petitioner (Atiku) won in these 21 States.

“It is important to note that throughout the trial, the ist Respondent (INEC) neither refuted nor countermanded this critical averment nor denied it.

“We urge your Lordship to hold that this constitutes an admission that requires no further proof. It also constitutes an admission against interest.

“The 1st Petitioner contested election to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the platform of the 2nd Petitioner, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which held on 25th February 2023, along with 17 other candidates, including the 2nd Respondent (Tinubu), who was the candidate of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in whose favor the electoral body, the ‘Independent’ National Electoral Commission (INEC) manipulated the technologies earlier put in place to ensure transparency, and wrongfully returned the said 2nd Respondent as the winner at about 4.00 am on is March 2023, at a time the 1st Respondent admitted that substantial percentage of the results had not to be transmitted to the collation system for verification as required by law.

“Under the cover of the so-called ‘technical glitch’ excuse which the Respondent never explained, the results were deliberately manipulated through suppression and discounting of the votes of the 1st Petitioner and inflation of the vote of the 2nd Respondent.

“This deliberate bypass of the use of the prescribed verification technology was nationwide and substantially affected the outcome of the election.

“The said 1st Respondent equally proceeded to declare the 2nd Respondent winner when the 2nd Respondent did not meet the mandatory constitutional requirement to secure not less than a quarter of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“This was in addition to the numerous infractions and corrupt practices perpetrated by the Respondents.

“Notwithstanding, the 1st Respondent unequivocally and clearly admitted in its pleadings, namely paragraph 18 at page 13 of its Reply to the Petition, which was never refuted or nor retracted, that the Petitioners won 21 States of the federation in the presidential election, which is an admission against interest.

“As a result of non-use of collation by electronic transmission, the 1st Respondent later altered the admitted result of 21 States for the 1st Petitioner to 12 States,” Atiku added.

It will be recalled that Atiku, who came second in the presidential contest, closed his case before the court, after calling 27 witnesses and tendered documentary Exhibits. He is among other things, praying the court to withdraw the Certificate of Return that was issued to President Tinubu by INEC.

Temperatures To Soar In Greece As Fires Still Burn

0

Greece is bracing for more intense heat this weekend, with meteorologists warning that temperatures could climb as high as 45C (113F).

People have been advised to stay home, and tourist sites – including Athens’ ancient Acropolis – will be shut during the hottest parts of the next two days.

It could turn into Greece’s hottest July weekend in 50 years, one of the country’s top meteorologists says.

Meanwhile, firefighters are continuing to battle dozens of wildfires.

Emergencies and civil protection officials are warning of a very high risk of new blazes across the country.

Western Attica – just west of Athens – is among the worst-hit areas, along with Laconia in the southern Peloponnese and the island of Rhodes.

Greece’s EU partners have provided help, including firefighting planes from France and Italy and more than 200 firefighters from Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. Neighbouring Turkey is also sending some aircraft to help.

Greece – like a number of other European countries – saw a prolonged spell of extreme heat earlier this month.

The latest heatwave comes at one of the busiest times for the country’s tourism industry.

Electricity Generation Drops 16% TO 3,501MW

0

Nigeria’s electricity generation, Thursday, dropped Week-on-Week, by 16.4 per cent to 3,501.20 megawatts, MW, from 4,187.6 MW recorded Thursday, last week.

As observed, the situation occurred because of many factors, including the poor state of plants and low gas supply to thermal plants.

The development has pushed the Electricity Distribution Companies, DISCOs, to embark on load shedding in order to spread the limited electricity to many at different times.

This is coming as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says eleven electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, have filed an application for rate review with the commission.

The request for rate review, according to NERC, is premised on the need to incorporate changes in macroeconomic parameters and other factors affecting the quality of service, operations and sustainability of the companies.

House Of Rep. Urges National Electricity Regulatory Commission To Disapprove Tariff Increase

0

The house of representatives has asked the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) not to approve the proposed increase in electricity tariffs.

The lower legislative chamber passed the resolution during a plenary session, following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Sani Madaki, a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Kano.

In the past weeks, reports had spread that electricity tariffs would be increased by 40 percent due to spiralling petrol prices.

The increase was said to be contingent on the 2022 multi-year tariff order (MYTO), which is due for a bi-annual review this month.

NITT Builds Workshops For Conversion Of Petrol-powered Vehicles To Autogas

0

The Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), says it has built workshops across the country to assist Nigerians convert their petrol-powered vehicles to autogas.

Dr Bayero Salih-Farah, Director-General of the institute, said this at a news conference on Thursday in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said that the institute has been working on the project for a year now and is ready to commence the conversion in the next two to three weeks.

Salih-Farah explained that the transport institute had been working in partnership with some manufacturers of the conversion kits which would be used at its workshops to enable Nigerians to have cheaper conversion from PMS to autogas.

“We have sensitised relevant stakeholders across the country at different fora on the need for Nigerians to migrate from the use of PMS to gas.

“Gas is very cheap than petrol, it is also cleaner and convenient; Nigerians will be able to save a lot of money when they convert their vehicles from petrol to autogas.

“The cost of transport will come down drastically because the money required to refill a tank using an autogas will be 40 per cent lower than the money required filling a tank using petrol,” he said.

Salih-Farah said the use of autogas would also reduce environmental pollution in the country substantially and appealed to Nigerians to take advantage of the initiative.

Meanwhile, the DG said the agency would partner with the National Information Technology Agency on knowledge sharing on some major projects of the institute.

He said that efforts have been intensified to make the school the leading transport and logistics institute in Africa.

Bronze Age Discovery Made At Shetland Spaceport Site

0

Remains of what is believed could have been a Bronze Age ritual cremation cemetery have been found at Shetland’s planned SaxaVord spaceport.

The discovery was made during groundworks for the rocket launch site on the Lamba Ness peninsula in Unst.

Features including pits and burnt bone have been uncovered. Archaeologists think it may date from 2200-1800 BC.

The discovery is not expected to hamper development work at the spaceport, which is supporting the excavation.

Katie O’Connell, of site assessors AOC Archaeology, said: “The several deposits of burnt bone which have been found are likely associated with the remains of cremation deposits.

She added: “Though excavation is only beginning, there may be a relation between the large stones, alignments of pits, the quartz setting, and the cremation cemetery, suggesting that together these form part of a ritual complex.”

Curbing Pollution: Amsterdam Bans Cruise Ships To Limit Visitors

0

Amsterdam’s council has banned cruise ships from the city centre as the Dutch capital tries to limit visitor numbers and curb pollution.

Politicians said the vessels were not in line with the city’s sustainable ambitions.

It means the central cruise terminal on the River IJ near Amsterdam’s main train station will close.

It is the latest measure to clamp down on mass tourism in the city.

Cruise ships have become a symbol of the problem, with more than 100 mooring in the capital every year.

The council has been trying to scrub up the city, banning cannabis smoking on the streets of the red-light district.

In March the city launched an online campaign urging young British men considering holding their bachelor parties in Amsterdam to stay away.

Amsterdam has become a victim of its own popularity, attracting 20 million annual visitors – some drawn by its party city reputation.

Ms Rooderkerk recently compared cruise tourists to a type of “plague of locusts” descending all at once on the city.

Other Amsterdam officials have baulked at that kind of language. But Mayor Femke Halsema complained last year that cruise tourists were let loose for a couple of hours, ate at international chains and had no time to visit a museum, consuming the city but doing little for it.

The other key reason for removing cruise ships is to lower air pollution levels in Amsterdam. A 2021 study of one big cruise ship found that it had produced the same levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in one day as 30,000 trucks.

Other mooring sites away from the city centre have been under consideration for some time but no decision has yet been taken.

In a separate development, Amsterdam has announced plans to beef up night-time culture for young people.

The city has outlined its aim to find nightclub locations such as disused tunnels and garages to develop the talent of “creative young people who want to organise something at night”.

Hollywood Screenwriters Take Aim At ChatGpt

0

Striking Hollywood actors joined film and television writers on picket lines for the first time in 63 years, cheering and chanting outside major studios with calls for higher streaming-era pay and curbs on use of artificial intelligence.

The twin strikes will add to the economic damage from the writers’ walkout that started on May 2, increasing the pressures facing the multibillion-dollar media industry as it struggles with seismic changes to its business.

In New York City and Los Angeles, actors marched outside the offices of Netflix Inc. Paramount Global and other companies, voicing demands for higher compensation for working-class actors and other gains.

Not six months since the release of ChatGPT, generative artificial intelligence is already prompting widespread unease throughout Hollywood. Concern over chatbots writing or rewriting scripts is one of the leading reasons TV and film screenwriters took to picket lines earlier this week.

Though the Writers Guild of America is striking for better pay in an industry where streaming has upended many of the old rules, AI looms as rising anxiety.
