Insecurity: We’ll secure Nigeria – Nuhu Ribadu

0

Yesterday, President Bola Tinubu and the entire nation received assurances from the national security adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, that security services will successfully secure the country and restore peace and stability. Ribadu was reacting to the President’s admonition that they should work together to fulfill the mandate of addressing the nation’s ongoing security concerns.

His accusation was made in light of the insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes that have endangered the nation’s ability to conduct business. After the President’s first meeting with the security chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the NSA, Mallam Ribadu, briefed State House reporters, saying: “The President urged them to operate as a team and deliver on their mandate.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, he said: “We’re here to thank Mr. President for the opportunity he gave us to serve our country and to serve his own government. We also pledged our loyalty to him, Nigeria and Nigerians. “We believe the choice he made is the right one, the correct one, and we know what he wants for this country. ‘’We’re going to work tirelessly to ensure we accomplish that objective of securing our country, establishing peace, stability and let’s get our lives back. ‘Work as a team and deliver.’

“He gave us the assurance that he’s with us one hundred per cent. He told us we must work as a team and that there’s work to be done, he’ll expect us to deliver and we’re grateful for the opportunity. That’s why we are here.” Asked what the starting point of the new heads of security would be, Ribadu said: “Where we are today and you can see already, things are improving in our country.

“If you see the record of crimes and activities of criminals are going down, it will continue to go down. We’ll secure this place.  “Nigerians have seen the quality of the people that are given opportunity, they are probably some of the bests we have, and they are not going to fail you, they’ll certainly deliver. Thank you very much.” Apart from the NSA, others in attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear-Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and the Acting IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

Recall that Tinubu cautioned the immediate past service chiefs against working against one another if the fight against insecurity was to be successful. In order to avoid repeating past mistakes when there was inter-agency rivalry, which allowed rebels, bandits, and kidnappers the space to grow and jeopardize the country’s corporate existence, he had emphasized that the security chiefs must cooperate.

EU’s report can’t delegitimize Tinubu’s govt – Keyamo

0

Festus Keyamo, a former minister of state for labor and employment, stated that the EUOM’s 2023 general election report cannot invalidate President Bola Tinubu’s administration. On Monday, Keyamo made a statement via his verified Twitter account.

However, several Nigerians, like Keyamo, have responded negatively to the EU study. There isn’t a single election anywhere in the world without irregularities, according to Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN. He clarified that the question is whether the alleged irregularities had an impact on the election results.

He claims that the EU report does not reveal who won or lost an election. Only the judiciary has the power to legitimize or delegitimize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, according to Keyamo, a representative of the disbanded Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.

He stated, “It is only a forensic examination of the entire process by the judiciary that can determine the extent to which the supposed ‘irregularities’ affected the outcome of the elections. And there are legal rules already laid down to achieve this.

“The EU report is NOT (and cannot be) a document that tells you who won or lost an election. It only reports the ‘irregularities’ noticed and recommends improvement in future elections. “Therefore, all the hoopla over that EU report is neither here nor there when it comes to legitimizing or delegitimizing the government of the day. That power or responsibility belongs to the Judiciary,” he said.

Recall Tinubu had been named the victor of the presidential election by INEC. However, Tinubu’s victory is currently being contested at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, met with the Shell Global Upstream Director, Zoë Yujnovich, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Also at the meeting was the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

The meeting is President Tinubu’s first engagement after the Sallah festivities and his foreign trips to France on June 20 and London on June 24.

Yujnovich, who assumed office as Upstream Director on July 1 has been a member of the Shell Executive Committee since 2021.
She arrived at the Aso Rock Villa alongside three other Shell officials at about 11:45 am and was ushered into the President’s office complex for the meeting scheduled for 12:00 noon.

The meeting forms part of ongoing consultations with leaders from the oil and gas sector since his administration discontinued petroleum subsidy on May 29.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with the new Service Chiefs in a closed-door meeting and assured of his administration’s readiness to tackle insecurity across the country.

The meeting which concluded a few minutes ago at the Presidential Villa, Abuja was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General C.G Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General T. A Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff, AVM H.B Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla; and acting Inspector-General of Police, DIG Kayode Egbetokun.

While the new service chiefs have since assumed duties, their appointments have generated diverse reactions from Nigerians.

Speaking after the meeting, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu said the President has appointed quality people and they will deliver improved security to Nigerians. He thanked the President for the opportunity to serve the country noting that Tinubu assured them of his readiness to secure Nigeria.

Recall that Tinubu, shortly before his recent trip to Paris, France, to attend a financial summit, had jolted the nation when he sacked the former service chiefs and announced new ones as replacements.

Tinubu had also appointed a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, as the National Security Adviser (NSA), replacing Babagana Monguno.

Senegal President Set To Announce Election Plan

0

Senegal braced for a potential showdown on Monday as President Macky Sall prepared to make a long-awaited announcement on whether he plans to seek a controversial third term.

On the eve of Sall’s nationwide address, his fiercest critic, Ousmane Sonko, urged the public to “come out en masse” and oppose him.

The president is due to make the announcement on national television at 8:00 pm (2000 GMT).

Deadly clashes erupted last month between Sonko supporters and the security forces, claiming at least 16 lives.

The turbulence has stained Senegal’s image as a beacon of stability in West Africa, a region notorious for coups and civil war.

Sall, 61, was first elected in 2012 for a seven-year term and again in 2019 for a five-year term, following a constitutional revision of the presidential tenure.

Protests Erupt In Senegal Following Sonko Sentencing

The constitution stipulates that a president cannot serve more than two terms — but Sall’s supporters argue the counter has been reset to zero thanks to the 2016 revision.

Sall once campaigned against a third term by his predecessor, Abdoulaye Wade, who was in power from 2000 to 2012.

He also repeatedly said he would not seek a third mandate.

But he has no designated political successor and in recent months has been coy about another term, a position that has stoked tensions.

Sonko, a fiery orator popular with Senegal’s disaffected youth, paints Sall as corrupt and a would-be dictator.

“It’s incumbent on all the Senegalese people to stand up, to face him,” Sonko said on Sunday night.

“If we have to put up a fight, it must be definitive… the days and weeks to come will be crucial,” he said in a video posted on social media.

Sonko was sentenced on June 1 to two years’ jail for “corrupting” a young beauty salon worker, sparking protests which led to 16 deaths according to the government, 24 according to Amnesty International, and 30 according to Sonko’s party.

The conviction makes him ineligible to stand in 2024.

Sonko says the case was crafted to prevent him from running, a charge authorities deny. He has been blocked in by the authorities at his home since May 28.

N54.3m Campaign Permit: Imo Guber candidates Accuse APC Governor

0

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state has stipulated the sum of N54.3million as the mandatory ‘Permit fee’ for Governorship candidates in the state to display and disseminate their campaign messages.

This was brought to light Saturday by the G-12 chieftains of the Imo state Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), who described the policy executed through the Imo Signage and Advertising Agency (IMSAA) as obnoxious and a deliberate stifling of opposition political views in utter violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the 12 party chairmen of the Imo IPAC G-12, Elder Uchendu Ahaneku of the Action Alliance (AA) regretted that Governor Hope Uzodinma, through IMSAA may have deliberately contrived a policy contrary to the provisions of the constitution and Electoral Act to cripple the campaign activities of opposition political parties by barring them from conveying and selling their political manifestos to Imo people, through the obnoxious IMSAA restrictions.

“From all intents and purposes the policy is deliberately targeted at opposition political parties and their governorship candidates; to stifle their voices, shut down their campaigns and confer an undue advantage to Governor Hope Uzodinma who is running in the same November 11 election to retain his seat as Governor of Imo state.

“Until the governor proves otherwise, IMSAA has become a political tool used by Governor Uzodinma to harass and intimidate political parties and opponents through the obnoxious demand of N54.3million campaign permit fee, which paves the way for only APC to run an elaborate governorship campaign.”

Ahaneku however noted that the party chieftains have already put machinery in motion to challenge the exploitative policy in the court of law.

Speaking also, Prince Marshal Okaforanyanwu of the Social Democratic Party accused Uzodinma of intentionally weaponizing IMSAA and other agencies of government for his unjust political advantage. He observed that nowhere in Nigeria has such devious machination to undermine the opposition through unlawful policies, been seen or heard of since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

“Uzodinma is not interested in a fair contest come November 11, all his after is how he will return unopposed as governor. Ofcourse it has been the story of his life, he has never engaged in fair political context which is a true test of popularity among the citizens. Nevertheless , the opposition will not be cowed by the shenanigans of the Imo state government and for the avoidance of doubt, we shall interrogate this obnoxious lawin court and seek appropriate redress”, Okaforanyanwu stressed.

Meanwhile, according to IMSAA the permit fee for governorship candidates to advertise and publicize their campaign messages is N54.3million with non-refundable processing fee of N100,000; site inspection fee of N50,000 and approval fee of N150,000, bring everything to a total of N54.3million for every Governorship candidate in Imo state.

IMSAA noted in their fee schedule that even after paying the stipulated N54.3million, that IMSAA “reserves the right to reject any application”.

Further study of the payment schedules shows that IMSAA may be bent on restricting the reach and spread of opposition governorship candidates when it added a clause to its fee demands that the permit allows candidates to display messages only within permitted areas of Imo state.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives,Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has called on parliaments across the globe to intensify efforts on climate action as the world marks the International Day of Parliamentarism.

FG Rejects EU’s Report on 2023 Election

0

The Federal Government has dismissed the European Union’s report on the 2023 general elections as presented by the EU Electoral Observer Mission, describing it as “jaundiced”.

In a statement issued on sunday by the Special Adviser to The President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy Dele Alake, the FG said “We urge the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of our country and allow Nigeria to breathe,” Alake insisted that the February 25, 2023 presidential election was “clearly and fairly” won by Tinubu, the then candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We find it preposterous and unconscionable that in this day and age, any foreign organisation of whatever hue can continue to insist on its own yardstick and assessment as the only way to determine the credibility and transparency of our elections,”

On June 27, 2023, the EU presented its report on the 2023 elections in Nigeria to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The EU said the election exposed enduring systemic weaknesses and therefore signalled a need for further legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness and accountability.

Collaborate With The Executive – Adamu To APC Lawmakers

0

Speaking through its National Chairman, Senator Abdulahi Adamu, when the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, visited his home along with some members of the Senate on Sallah homage to his Keffi residence in Nasarawa State, The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress has charged members of the National Assembly to collaborate with the executive arm of government in the overall interest of Nigerians.

Addressing the Lawmakers, Adamu said, “I congratulate you and your deputy on your emergence as the President of the Senate and Deputy President of the Senate, respectively. Your emergence was a great relief to the party. Contests for offices are over; it is now time for governance. There must be effective collaboration between the legislature and the executive in the overall interest of our people.

“Nigerians expect a lot through you and that can only be achieved through a united legislature and the executive working in sync in a bipartisan manner. As the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, you have the knowledge, experience and what it takes for the two arms of government to work in harmony for the peace and development of our country.”
