The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has named former Africa and Commonwealth long jump champion Yusuf Ali as the head of the organising committee for the 2023 Nigerian track and field championships scheduled to hold next month at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City, capital of Edo state.

Gadzama’s claim was corroborated by Dare Esan, also a member of the federation.

In the message conveyed to members, Ali was named to replace last year’s head of the organising committee, Solomon Ogba, a two-time President of the federation.

Also named are Samuel Onikeku (technical director), Victor Okorie (performance director), Navy Comdr Nesiama Omatseye, Prof. Ken Anugweje, Enefiok Udo-Obong,
Maria Wophill, Henry Okorie, Solomon Aliyu and Rita Mosindi, the AFN Secretary General.

Lagos State is kick-starting the collection of the fee for POC from motorists come July 2023.

At a joint news conference in Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, said the state government had begun the implementation of the new initiative that aimed to streamline and enhance the process of vehicle ownership verification which is the “annual Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC) in line with compliance with legal requirement fundamental to transparency, security and accountability within the transportation network.

He said the initiative was in accordance with the National Road Traffic Regulation 2012 as amended, No. 101, Vol. 99; Section 73- (1) which states that ‘There shall be Proof of Ownership Certificate for all registered Vehicles’. Section 73- (1-6) also added that ‘The commission shall establish and maintain a Central Data Base for Vehicles and drivers for the federation.”

“To this end, the Federal Government has introduced the issuance of annual Proof of Ownership Certificate for all registered vehicles.

“This certificate will serve as official documentation of a vehicle’s legal owners upon successful completion of the necessary requirements and procedures.

“The POC will contain vital information including the vehicle’s registration details, such as, license number plate, model, year of manufacture in addition to owner’s name and address.

“Having critically reviewed the challenges encountered in ensuring promotion of Safety and Security of lives and property through the issuance of POC nationally and especially in our Dear State, the Joint Tax Board in its communiqué issued at the end of the emergency meeting held on 9th May, 2023 adopted and made a resolution that proof of ownership certificate (PoC) be issued to motorists on an annual basis nationwide,” he said.

The permanent secretary said the decision, among other things was aimed at tracking the real time status and guarantees the integrity of all vehicles registered on the National Vehicle and Identification Scheme (NVIS) database.

He stated that for effective security administration, the annual POC was specially printed and connected with other vehicle documents in the state.

Toriola explained that through the POC, statistics of vehicular population nationwide could easily be obtained, while it would bring solution to minimization of car theft and recovery of stolen vehicles, as well as streamline the fulfillment of uniform licensing scheme mandate.

Other benefits, he said, included that the states motor vehicle documents could easily be verified regardless of the issuing state; the safety and security of vehicles and their owners, and enhancement of the National Vehicle database for national security and for planning and economic development.

In a bid to show commitment and further reform the Aviation sector, while improving livelihood, the Wachakal airstrip, Nguru in Yobe State, a project by the Federal Government of Nigeria is now 85 percent completed.

This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary, of the Ministry of Aviation, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, during a test flight conducted on the airstrip by the Permanent Secretary and officials of the Ministry recently.

Director of Aerodrome Development, Engr. Clement Olayinka Awogbami  who represented the Permanent Secretary said despite the inflations that  caught up with the project , which led to its  review, coupled with  challenges  of limited resources, the Federal Government started the project about a year ago and, a significance progress has been recorded.

This he attributed to the level of commitment and concern to reform in the aviation sector.

According to the Director of Aerodrome of the Ministry, the design for the airstrip is expected to have Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR) equipment which would guide aircraft coming into the runway.

However, he added that because of the foreign component involved in its manufacturing, it will take some time to acquire it and would be installed as soon as it’s delivered. ‘’We are hoping that the DVOR will be installed in the next three months. Once that is done, then the airstrip will be officially ready for use’’ he said.

While stating the economic benefits of the project, he said: “This type of project is designed for the purpose of security; it will enhance security surveillance, it will also aid VIP movement, assist in medical evacuation in case of emergency and also for agricultural purposes. It is expected that the project when ready and in use will contribute to the country’s GDP’’

The Emir of Nguru, Alhaji Mustapha Ibn Mai Kyari expressed gratitude to the federal government for the project. He said the project will boost the economy of the community and also reduce unemployment rate amongst the youths.

On his part, the Vice Chairman of Karasuwa Local Government, Hassan Daliru thanked the former Senate President, and the Federal Government for attracting development to the State. He said: “This airstrip was not in existence some years ago but with the effort of the former Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, we now have this project that will be completed soon. We hope to see more infrastructural development in our State”.

The Jostle for the Senate Minority Leadership

0

The jostle for the Senate Minority Leadership seat appears to be creating uneasy calm among senators who are members of the opposition parties following moves by some vested interests to impose leadership on them.

Speculations that no fewer than 22 Senators from the APC are planning to defect to the PDP are potentially causing a significant shift in the Senate. According to a media report, if this happens, the PDP, as the main opposition party, would become the majority in the red chamber, with an increase in their seats to 58 and a decrease in the APC’S seats to 37

An unnamed source mentioned plans to challenge the outcome of Godswill Akpabio’s election as Senate President, alleging manipulation and compromise of the ballot papers.

Recall that the 10th senate distribution is as follows:  APC 59 senators; PDP, 36; LP, 8; SDP, 2; NNPP, 2; YPP, 1; and APGA 1 and positions of minority leadership are Minority leader, Deputy minority leader, Minority whip and Deputy whip

Reports also speculate that in a move to get his allies into minority leadership positions in the red chamber, the immediate past Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, met Senate President, Godswill Akpabio on Thursday. The former Rivers State Governor is said to have pushed his associate, Kingsley Chinda, as Minority leader in the House of Representatives, though he is yet to be confirmed. Presently, the PDP which has the highest minority seats with 36 senators vowed to resist any plot by the ruling APC or other interested groups to foist a Minority leadership on the Senate and also, lawmakers from the opposition caucus said “what is paramount for us as a party is to have a minority leadership that will ensure a robust opposition in the senate and in the general interest of Nigerians. “We are going to focus on ensuring that the democratic tenets and practices of checks and balances and the principles of separation of powers. We are in touch with our people and their statement is in tune with our position as a party, we are having conversations with them and at the end of the day what you are going to get is our position in having a firm and robust opposition in the national assembly. “We will ensure the principle of checks and balances,” PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

Also, opposition senators have vowed to resist any attempt to foist “compromised leadership” on them by forces within and outside the National Assembly. The lawmakers, in a joint statement said the minority caucus would select its leaders after consultation with their respective political parties without undue interference from anti-democratic forces. They emphasized that no senator has yet been endorsed or selected for any minority position. The statement reads “for the avoidance of doubt, no senator has yet been endorsed or selected for any minority position as this would await due process as agreed by all minority parties in their last meeting. “Attempts to foist a one-party dictatorship would be resisted and would fail. “We call on all members of the minority political parties to work together in unity to defend the democratic institution of the senate and Nigeria.” opposition joint statement

The People’s Democratic Party and its standard bearer in the last election, Atiku Abubakar is on a collision course with the G-5 over the Minority Leadership in the National Assembly, particularly the Senate.  The PDP and Atiku had declared support for the Ex-Governor of Sokoto, Aminu Tambuwal (Pdp, Sokoto South) for the Minority Leadership seat but the G-5 was pushing for Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe (Cross River North) for the same position. On resumption of the plenary on July 4, the Senate President is expected to read the letter from the parties announcing their nominations for the minority leadership positions

Exploring Tsavo East National Park, Kenya

0

Tsavo East National Park is considered to be one of the oldest and largest national parks that can be found in the Coast Province, within the southeastern part of the Republic of Kenya.

Forming one national park together with Tsavo West National Park, both parks are separated by the A109 road and railway, and they were named after the Tsavo River that flows west to east through Tsavo West, and a small part in Tsavo East which then with Athi River converges and forms the bigger Galana River.

The majority of the park is consisted of semi-arid grasslands and savanna, however, it is considered to be one of the world’s biodiversity strongholds, and its popularity is mostly due to the vast amounts of diverse wildlife that can be seen here.

The park was formed as such in 1948 and operated by the Kenya Wildlife Service which maintains different tourist facilities, as well as the roads leading to the park, bridges, and the promotion of this magnificent place.

As the park is generally flat, there have been signs of inhabitants living here back to the Early Stone Age and Middle Stone Age, as some archaeological sites could be found dating from those periods.

The population that inhabited the area as early as 8 century, traded ivory, catskins, and probably slaves with the Swahili inhabitants to the south, although there is no clear evidence that the area was occupied by the Swahili.

The situation was unchanged until the British and German explorers and colonizers came in 19 century, when the Orma and Watha people interacted as hostiles with them, and the colonizers put a bigger effort into colonizing the interior of Kenya by building and developing the area.

In 1898, the British started building the railway that would run through Tsavo, however, their construction was somewhat slowed when two lions started attacking their camps and construction workers, which resulted in 135 Indians and local workers falling victim to the two lions.

It was Lt. Col Patterson that finally killed the two lions which allowed for the railway to be finalized and trains would run to the city of Kisumu on Lake Victoria.

This also allowed nowadays the park to be visited by many tourists and be one of the more interesting natural features that should not be missed whenever in Kenya.

As the park occupies an area of some 13,747 sq km (5,308 sq mi), there are many attractions that visitors can see, such as the River Galana where different wildlife species gather, Yatta Plateau which is a relief feature that lies between the rivers Athi and Tavi characterized by plain wide valleys as well as shallow spaced valleys which were formed as a result of lava flows.

Furthermore, there are the Lugard Falls, Mubanda Rock that stands out from the rest of the park as it acts as a water catchment that supplies the natural dam below it, Aruba Dam, Kanderi Swamp, and the most important Tsavo River.

As this is an African national park, the African big 5 can certainly be seen here, and among the fauna, there are lion, black rhino, cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, yellow baboon, bushbuck, southeast African cheetah, African wild dog, several duikers, giraffe, hyena, and many other African species.

In addition, Tsavo East is home to more than 500 bird species, among which there are the black kite, crowned crane, lovebird, and sacred ibis.

As is the case with other African parks, this one too has issues with the poaching that is still present nowadays, and even though the poachers do not face serious consequences, they are being punished by the local community that lives and thrives in the park.

In conclusion, Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, both significant in Kenya’s history as a site of important events, offer tourists the chance to witness the grandeur of Africa’s wildlife in their natural habitat and bask in the beauty of Kenyan nature.
