Oyo and Delta states’ men and women teams have emerged champions of 2023 BetKing 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball National Championship which was held at the outdoor Sports Hall of Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Oyo State defeated Lagos State 10-1 to lift the trophy in the men’s category, while Delta State defeated Oyo State 3-2 to win the women’s category.

Osun State came down from three points to beat Abuja 7-5 to seal third position in the men’s category, while Imo State pummeled Kwara State 5-1 to settle for third position in the women’s category.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the President of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria, Seyi Johnson, said the championship was an opportunity for the players to get the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the African Para Games in Ghana next September.

He said the current board is working round the clock to ensure Nigeria returns to its rightful position in Africa.

Mr Johnson said, “The current board plans to leave a legacy in Wheelchair Basketball; the journey has been tedious, but we are optimistic about making a mark. We are ready to organise various championships across the country. Wheelchair Basketball will make Nigeria proud and will be a thing of joy and pride to sports in this country.

“Impossibility is not in my dictionary, and I got the philosophy from my boss, Hon. Bukola Olopade. He told me when people say there is no way, I should create a path, and I think I am creating a way in Wheelchair Basketball.”

He continued, “Ahead of the African Para Games in Ghana, the national coaches are on the ground to monitor the players and sports talents. After two weeks of rest, the players will resume camp because we dream of attending the Para Games and qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. We have identified and want to work on our weak links before the African Para Games.

Meanwhile, winners in both categories went home with a trophy and N500,000; the first runners-up pocketed N300,000, while the second runners-up went home with N200,000.

Peseiro’s Future: Power To The People As Nigeria Federation Lets Fans Decide

1

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro’s job is in the hands of the fans after football federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau said he will let them decide if the Portuguese should stay on.

Peseiro, who has coached Porto and Sporting in his home country and took over Nigeria in May last year, has led his side to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast starting in January but his contract ends on June 30.

There is now a national debate over whether the 63-year-old should be retained and Gusau said the people can decide.

“We have the plan to push the votes to Nigerians to hear their views and thoughts,” Gusau said on the LovingFootball radio show.

“We’ve tried the foreign coaches and also the local coaches.

“Maybe we didn’t get it right in the area of getting the right person. We are going to push it to the public, whether we should continue with Peseiro or he should go.”

Despite Nigeria’s continental qualification, results have been mixed under Peseiro even as he has been able to select from an array of players plying their trade in Europe’s top leagues.

Since failing to qualify for last year’s World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria have won four and lost five of their games

United States To Host 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

The United States will serve as hosts of the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, after being unanimously voted upon by the FIFA Council.

The host selection process considered infrastructure and service requirements before deciding the United States stood as ‘a proven leader in staging global events’. The tournament also precedes the 2026 World Cup, also set to be co-hosted by U.S., giving FIFA an opportunity to maximize synergies and kick off the development of football in the North American region.

“We are thrilled that the United States has been selected to host the most prestigious club competition in world soccer. This adds to the already unprecedented runway of top-tier events in which either our National Teams are involved or are taking place in our country and is yet another opportunity to grow the game here in the United States,” said U.S. Soccer President Cindy Cone.

“The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will be the pinnacle of elite professional men’s club football, and with the required infrastructure in place together with a massive local interest, the United States is the ideal host to kick off this new, global tournament,” added FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“With some of the world’s top clubs already qualified, fans from every continent will be bringing their passion and energy to the United States in two years’ time for this significant milestone in our mission to make football truly global.”

The tournament’s new format will see 32 clubs compete, replacing the seven-team version to create a milestone competition every four years. In order to qualify, clubs must win a continental championship in any of the four years from 2021 to 2024 within the five main confederations: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.

Europe was awarded 12 slots, South America boasts six and every other region holds just four. Extra entries are expected to be awarded according to each team’s ranking by results of a four-year span in the continental competitions.

The tournament is expected to run for approximately three weeks, guaranteeing the 32 teams at least three games each playing in eight groups of four. FIFA has yet to finalize details, with a lot of the competition’s formatting still subject to change.
