Independent Names 32 Exhibitors For Second 20th-Century Art Fair

0

Independent New York has revealed the exhibitors for its second-ever 20th Century art fair in New York, devoted to art made during that timeframe.

As with the last year’s inaugural edition, this one will be held at the Battery Maritime Building at the southern tip of Manhattan. The 2023 fair will run September 7–10, coinciding with the Armory Show, one of the biggest art fairs in New York and a major event of the fall season.

Some 32 exhibitors are set to take part, around the same number as last time and a fraction of the amount that show at the Armory Show. Compared to that fair, however, Independent 20th Century is a more focused boutique fair with a stated focus.

The exhibitor list follows below, with asterisks denoting galleries making their Independent 20th Century debut.

Suspects Charged In 20-Year-Old Museum Theft Of Jackson Pollock And Andy Warhol Artworks

Federal charges have been brought against nine people accused of stealing millions of dollars worth of sports memorabilia and fine art, including an Andy Warhol silkscreen and a Jackson Pollock painting, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania Gerard M. Karam announced.

The thievery ring operated for more than two decades at 20 museums and stores across the East Coast United States and parts of the Midwest. According to Karam’s statement, prosecutors believe silver and gold sports memorabilia, including nine of Yogi Berra’s 10 World Series rings, had been melted down into portable discs and sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Eight of the nine accused people turned themselves in to authorities and at least five have entered preliminary plea agreements on charges of theft of art and conspiracy to dispose of major objects of cultural heritage, according to court documents reviewed by the Press. The suspects are Pennsylvania residents. The ninth suspect, 53-year-old Nicholas Dombek, is still sought by police.

One of the earliest thefts was in 2002 at the Everhart Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where the suspects nabbed Pollock’s 1949 painting Springs Winter, then valued at $11.6 million, and a silkscreen by Warhol, titled Le Grande Passion, which was listed in the indictment as being worth $100,000.

“About three years ago, a forensic link at one of the theft sites discovered by a local police agency led us to forensic evidence that linked several of these thefts,” Karam said.

Kate Middleton stunned at another royal event after this weekend’s Trooping the Colour.

The Princess of Wales was supporting her husband Prince William during the Order of the Garter Service at Windsor Castle.

Middleton wore a long-sleeved white dress with black polka dots by Alessandra Rich paired with a coordinating hat by Philip Treacy.

Prince William, who will be turning 41 on Wednesday, walked in the procession for the first time as the heir to the throne, sporting the traditional hat adorned with ostrich feather plumes. He previously wore his Order of the Garter adornments to King Charles coronation in May.

The Prince of Wales has been attending the ceremony for years, with his wife by his side.

He first received his Order of the Garter knighthood in 2008, the same year Middleton first attended with him, three years before their wedding.

Middleton’s attendance at the time showed that she was being welcomed into the royal family. Two years later, Prince William proposed with his late mother, Princess Diana’s, ring.

Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci, has confirmed receipt of her Guinness World Record plaque for the longest cooking marathon, weeks after completing the contest.

Hilda received the plaque on Monday, and has since shared a video confirming receipt with the caption; “Our plaque is here @guinnessworldrecords.”

The 26-year-old chef was on Tuesday, June 13, officially declared the Guinness World Record holder for the longest cooking marathon.

In a statement on its website, GWR officially announced the young chef as its latest record holder in the cooking category.

The statement read, “Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records can now confirm that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.”

Hilda prepared over 100 pots of food during the contest, beating the previous record of 87 hours and 45 minutes set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Civil society oppose bill to regulate Christianity in Nigeria

A bill tagged, “An Act to Establish the National Council for Christian Education for the Purpose of Regulating and Setting Standard and For Related Matters, 2023” has already passed second reading purely to enhance the educational value of Christianity, according to CAN.

Senator Binos Yaroe, representing Adamawa South Senatorial District, is the sponsor of the bill, which has passed second reading at the Ninth Senate.

CSOs opposed to the bill say the nine-page bill is a violation of violation of sections 34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 of our 1999 Constitution and Articles 2, 8, 9, 17, 18, 27, 28, and 29 of the African Charter on Human & Peoples’ Rights (Ratification Enforcement) Act.

They say its preposterous and that in a multi-religious and secular state such as Nigeria, a bill that infringes on the citizens’ right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as well as unjustified intrusion of the state into the practice of the Christian religion is considered a priority.

The sponsors are planning to sensitise on the bill at a summit slated for June 22-23, 2023, in Abuja,

Civil society organisations opposed to the bill include Nigerian Association for Women Advancement; Catholic Lawyers Association; Sympathy Worldwide Organization; Life Choice International Initiative, Good Parenting and Youth Empowerment Initiative; Foundation for Marriage and Family; Centre for Corrections and Human Development; Islamic Platform of Nigeria.

CJN Swears In Six New Judges For National Industrial Court

0

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has sworn in six newly appointed judges of the National Industrial Court at the Supreme Court in Abuja.

Justice Ariwoola on Monday charged the judges to discharge their duties with utmost honour and integrity in line with their calling by shunning all forms of corruption.

In his charge, he said the nation’s judiciary is in need of men and women of unquestionable character, who will dispense Justice to the citizens without the fear of external intimidation and manipulation.

In his address, he asked the newly appointed judges to expect “many” high-profile cases which he said may largely come with “juicy, irresistible temptations”, especially when they involve “mouthwatering” financial and business transactions.

“I’m making it clear to you now that you must flee from such disguised danger. Your reputation and integrity matter much, and it counts enormously in your rise to honour and fame in life,” the nation’s chief justice said.

“Let me point out unambiguously that the life, gifts, and wealth that are not worked for, which are by extension undeserving, are always wrapped in calamity and destruction. Flee from them and keep our heads high above the murky waters of corruption and favouritism.

“No judicial officer at any level of our courts will be allowed to drag the reputation of the Nigerian judiciary into the mud. We can’t come this far to fail. Take heed of this admonition by walking rightly towards occupying an enviable space in the annals of the Nigerian judiciary.”

The move by the President followed persistent calls by civil society organisations that the security architecture be rejigged and fresh hands allowed to handle the nation’s security apparatus.

Between May 2015 and May 2023, verifiable data showed that over 55,000 Nigerians were killed by terrorists, bandits, and armed gangs during the administration of immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari. The former military head of state was criticised by many over the alarming killings in the country under his watch.

U.S. National Arboretum: Vital Scientific Research Under Way At 183-Hectare Compound

0

The United States National Arboretum is an arboretum in northeast Washington, D.C., operated by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service.

It was established in 1927 by an act of Congress[1] after a campaign by USDA Chief Botanist Frederick Vernon Coville.

It is 446 acres (1.80 km2) in size and is located 2.2 miles (3.5 km) northeast of the Capitol building, with entrances on New York Avenue, NE and R Street, NE.

The campus’s gardens, collections, and features are connected by roadways that are 9.5 miles (15.3 km) long in total.

In addition to the main campus in Washington, D.C., there are research locations at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland and in McMinville, Tennessee.

The Arboretum functions as a major center of botanical research conducted by the USDA, including applied research on trees, shrubs, turf, and the development of new ornamental plants.

In addition to a library and a historical collection (archive), the institution also has an extensive herbarium of over 800,000 specimens documenting wild and cultivated plant diversity.

The arboretum is home to one of the largest collections of preserved seeds in the world.

The National Arboretum Herbarium houses around 700,000 specimens, including those from species that the U.S. Department of Agriculture views as economically important.

“One of the things that we focus on is collecting the genetic diversity within those species, and both native and non-native. So, our role, our goal and our mission is to conserve as much of the genetic diversity of those species as possible,” says Kevin Conrad, the arboretum’s lead horticulturist.

“We never know what the emerging threat will be. There is a chance that a gene from any of those collections would help resolve that issue,” Conrad says. “There are examples throughout the USDA history, in conservation and plant collection, where the gene in a wheat plant or a grape plant has been able to thwart a disaster, a catastrophic event, a collapse of a critically important agricultural crop.”

While the scientists do their work, the public is free to roam the arboretum grounds. About 600,000 people visit the gardens each year. That’s a fraction, for example, of the 25 million who visit the National Mall, which is a much better-known Washington attraction.

Sandstorm hits Iraq’s Mosul

0

A sandstorm hits the northern Iraqi city of Mosul with local landmarks such as the Al-Nuri mosque and the Mosul Bridge shrouded in dust.

Last year, Iraq experienced more than a dozen sandstorms, an unprecedented number that was attributed to desertification.

Sand And Dust Storms Are Common Meteorological Hazards In Arid And Semi-Arid Regions.

They are usually caused by thunderstorms – or strong pressure gradients associated with cyclones – which increase wind speed over a wide area.

These strong winds lift large amounts of sand and dust from bare, dry soils into the atmosphere, transporting them hundreds to thousands of kilometres away.

The Main Sources Of These Mineral Dusts Are The Arid Regions Of Northern Africa, The Arabian Peninsula, Central Asia And China.

Comparatively, Australia, America and South Africa make minor, but still important, contributions.
