Al Ahly Win Record 11th CAF Champions League Title

0

Al Ahly of Egypt on Sunday came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca to clinch a record 11th TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title.

Egyptian international Mohamed Abdelmoneim scored a 78th-minute header that gave Al Ahly the edge.

The Red Devils won the tie with a 3-2 aggregate score, having recorded a 2-1 victory at home in the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

Egyptian international Mohamed Abdelmoneim flicked home a 78th minute header as Al Ahly came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca on Sunday and clinch a record extending 11th TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title.

The Red Devils won the tie with a 3-2 aggregate score, having recorded a 2-1 victory at home in the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

Abdelmoneim made a brilliant run to the near post, flicking home an Ali Maaloul corner to send the small crowd of Ahly fans into pandemonium.

With the win, Al Ahly wiped the tears from last season where they lost the title to the Moroccan giants 2-0 in the single-legged final at the same venue.

Before Abdelmoneim’s goal, Wydad were headed for a 1-0 win courtesy of Yahya Attiat Allah’s goal and that would have been enough to see them retain the title on the away goal rule, becoming the first ever Moroccan side to win back to back titles.

But, it was the Egyptian side which would leave the Stade Mohamed V Complex with smiles on their faces and the trophy in their hands.

It was a typical feisty North African derby, with chances few, but the battle immense especially in midfield.

Ahly’s Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed el-Shenawy reacts to the smoke and flares during the second-leg of the CAF Champions League final football match between Morocco’s Wydad AC and Egypt’s Al-Ahly at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on June 11, 2023.

Ayoub El Amloud had a sniff at goal for Wydad in the 13th minute when he made a daunting run from his right back position, drifting into the box, but his eventual shot was tame and an easy collection for the returning Ahly custodian Mohamed El Shenawy.

They however broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Attiat Allah’s freekick from the right curled all the way into the far right. Mohamed Ounnajem’s run towards the ball had thrown the entire defense off guard, allowing Shenawy to be easily beaten.

The tie continued to be dominated my midfield battles with chances fading off.

In the second half, Ahly showed their intention by going full attacking, Ahmed Abdelkader and Mohamed Magdy Afsha coming in for Marwan Attia and Hussein Elshahat who had been closely marked out during the game.

Ahly forced Wydad to play in their own half but were limited in their chances moving forward. For their efforts, they were rewarded 12 minutes to time when Maaloul’s brilliant delivery was flicked home by Abdelmoneim.

The Egyptians would have doubled their tally in added time when Abdelkader won the ball behind the defense, but from a tight angle couldn’t beat Wydad keeper Youssef El Motie who pulled a brilliant double block.

Despite pressure from Wydad with some nerve wrecking set pieces and drop balls, Ahly managed to see off the result and reclaim their title.

Djokovic has pulled ahead of Rafael Nadal as the male tennis player with the most Grand Slam wins and he is just one behind Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24

Novak Djokovich became the winningest male tennis player of all time on Sunday at the 2023 French Open when he beat Casper Ruud 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Serb has now won all four Grand Slam events-Wimbledon, the US Open, the Australian Open, and the French Open at least three times each.

The world No. 3 started poorly, losing the first three games of the first set, but fought back to take the set after a tiebreak at 7-6. He needed to save a break point in the eighth game to level scores at 4-4 and took the first set after one hour and 21 minutes.

Djokovic raced to a 3-0 lead in the second and wrapped up the set in 52 minutes. The third set saw Ruud try to enact a rude awakening, but the 22-time Grand Slam champion was in no mood for handing out early Christmas gifts, and he fended off the Norwegian’s challenge to take the third set 7-5 after three hours and 13 minutes.

Djokovic has now equalled Serena Williams’ Grand Slam total and is just one behind record-holder Margaret Court, who leads the way with 24 Grand Slam titles.

Exploring Obo Natural Park, São Tomé And Principe

0

Obo Natural Park, also known by its original name Parque Natural Ôbo, is a natural, national and very important park which is located in the southern part of the island of São Tomé that forms the island nation of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe.

Covering an area of some 235 square km (91 square mi), better yet 30% of the island area, there is also small section that was created in 2012 which is included from the island of Príncipe making the grand total area of some 300 square km (116 square mi).

Covered with lush green forests, mangroves, swamps and Savannah grasslands, there are also plenty of alluring waterfalls which are cascading down the slopes of the mountains, all the way to the black and white beaches.

There are plenty of gorgeous features that Obo can offer to its visitors, especially the village of Bombaim which is overlooked by the nation’s tallest summit, Bom Successo, nonetheless, Pico Cão Grande which is in the central part of the park is among the most well known places.

Rising dramatically above the park area, it is surrounded by lush green forest which is interesting for the scientists.

As a matter in fact, the flora in Obo Natural Park includes also the evergreen coniferous Afrocarpus mannii, orchards, ferns and mosses. With some 100 different kinds of unique orchids, and over 700 species of flora, this place is a paradise for the fauna that thrives in between the trees.

Being a perfect place for bird watchers, there are some 230 birds that can be found here, and since 1988, scientists classified the forests of Sao Tomé and Principe as the second most important in terms of biological interest of the 75 forests of Africa.

All in all, a true treasure that deserves to be well known around the world, this small nation in the Gulf of Guinea is absolutely proud to have this rare gem on its territory.

Plane Crash: 4 Children Found Alive In Colombia’s Amazon Jungle

0

Four children have been found alive after surviving a plane crash and spending weeks fending for themselves in Colombia’s Amazon jungle

Colombia’s president said the rescue of the siblings, aged 13, nine, four and one, was “a joy for the whole country”.The children’s mother and two pilots were killed when their light aircraft crashed in the jungle on 1 May.

The missing children became the focus of a huge rescue operation involving dozens of soldiers and local people.

President Gustavo Petro said finding the group was a “magical day”, adding: “They were alone, they themselves achieved an example of total survival which will remain in history.”

The children belong to the Huitoto indigenous group. Mr Petro shared a photograph of several members of the military and Indigenous community caring for the siblings, who had been missing for 40 days.

One of the rescuers held a bottle up to the mouth of the smallest child, while another fed one of the other children from a mug with a spoon.

A video shared by Colombia’s ministry of defence showed the children being air-lifted into a helicopter in the dark above the tall trees of the jungle. They have been flown to the nation’s capital Bogota, where ambulances have taken them to hospital for further medical treatment

The children’s grandmother, Fatima Valencia, said after their rescue: “I am very grateful, and to mother earth as well, that they were set free.” She said the eldest of the four siblings was used to looking after the other three when their mother was at work, and that this helped them survive in the jungle.”She gave them flour and cassava bread, any fruit in the bush, they know what they must consume,” Ms Valencia said in footage.

The Cessna 206 aircraft the children and their mother had been travelling on before the crash was flying from Araracuara, in Amazonas province, to San José del Guaviare, when it issued a mayday alert due to engine failure.

The bodies of the three adults were found at the crash site by the army, but it appeared that the children had escaped the wreckage and wandered into the rainforest to find help. A massive search began and in May, rescuers recovered items left behind by the children, including a child’s drinking bottle, a pair of scissors, a hair tie and a makeshift shelter.

Small footprints were also discovered, which led search teams to believe the children were still alive in the rainforest, which is home to jaguars, snakes and other predators. Members of the children’s community hoped that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills would give them a better chance of remaining alive.

Indigenous people joined the search and helicopters broadcast a message from the children’s grandmother, recorded in the Huitoto language, urging them to stop moving to make them easier to locate. After they were found, their grandfather, Fidencio Valencia, called on the authorities to allow the children to be moved closer to their family in Villavicencio, roughly 130km (142 miles) from Bogota.
“I am asking the president as the highest authority, I am sorry to bother him, but it is my right and my duty, it is my blood, it is my family. I want to see the children, here in Villavicencio,” he said in an interview.

Earlier Mr Petro said he had spoken to the children’s grandfather.

The president came under criticism last month when a tweet published on his account mistakenly announced that the children had been found.

He erased the tweet the next day saying that the information – which his office had been given by Colombia’s child welfare agency – could not be confirmed.

5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Johannesburg, Strongest Since March, 2019

0

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake has struck the South African city of Johannesburg, waking up people and causing damage to some buildings, seismologists and residents say.

The shaking was widely felt across the city and the region as a whole.

The earthquake happened at 2:38 a.m. on Sunday and was centered just 6 kilometers south of Alberton, or roughly 16 kilometers southeast of central Johannesburg, according to seismologists.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0, while South Africa’s Council for Geoscience put it at 4.7. The quake struck about 10 kilometers below the surface, which is very shallow.

People said the shaking was strong enough to wake them up and some homes suffered relatively minor damage, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. “The whole house shook for about 40 seconds,” one resident in Alberton said.

This is the strongest tremor in the Johannesburg area since March 2019, when a 4.9-magnitude earthquake hit near Soweto. In 2017, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit near Stilfontein.

Subsidy: Edo Rolls Out Free Internet Service For Workers

0

The Edo State Government has said it will provide 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other public places in the State to ensure unlimited internet access to workers in the wake of the three-day weekly work schedule for civil and public servants.

The provision of free internet, the government said, is part of efforts to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

In a statement, the Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, said the government is committed to ensuring optimal productivity and efficiency amid the new work schedule, noting that the free Wi-Fi service will guarantee free internet access to workers and others who need internet connectivity to perform their duties and reside in proximity to the designated locations covered by the Wi-Fi service.

According to the Head of Service, the locations with installed free Wi-Fi include the School of Nursing, Limit Road/Sapele Road; Pensions Bureau, Ring Road Roundabout; Victor Uwaifo Centre, Airport Road; Civil Service Commission, Sapele Road, and the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), Central area Road/Igbinedion Road.

Okungbowa further stated that each of the sites offers approximately 180 degrees of coverage.

“The Edo State Government is launching 24-hour free Wi-Fi service in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as other public places across the State to provide unlimited internet connectivity to our workers in light of the recent three-day weekly work schedule being implemented by the state government as part of the measures to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

“In our commitment to the welfare of our workers and ensuring optimal productivity and efficiency amid the new work schedule, we recognize the importance of internet access in enabling our workers to carry out their duties effectively as all our services have been digitalised in the State through the e-gov platform.

“Therefore, we have taken the step to provide free WiFi service, which guarantees internet connectivity to workers and others who rely on the internet to perform their tasks and reside in proximity to the designated locations covered under this service.

“The service is currently available in different locations within the state, including the School of Nursing along Limit Road/Sapele Road, the Pensions Bureau at Ring Road Roundabout, the Victor Uwaifo Centre on Airport Road, the Civil Service Commission on Sapele Road, and JOOPSA situated in the Central Area Road/Igbinedion Road vicinity. Each of these sites offers approximately 180 degrees coverage from the point of presence.”

“While we encourage all workers and individuals residing near the designated locations to take full advantage of this free internet access service, we reaffirm the Edo State Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for our workers, and assure that the government will continue to explore innovative solutions to support workers’ productivity and welfare.”
