UCL: Man City Beat Inter Milan To Lift Trophy, Win Treble

0

Spanish midfielder Rodri’s 68th-minute goal settled the only goal of the game, as Manchester City defeated Inter Milan 1-0 to win this year’s Champions League trophy.

The Spaniard’s side-footed finish midway through the second half broke Inter’s resistance. And although Federico Dimarco hit the crossbar with a header before Ederson saved sensationally from Romelu Lukaku, City held on to make history in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

It is the first time the Premier League club has won the title in their history.

City have now completed the Treble, after overhauling Arsenal to retain the league title and beating Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

This victory saw them match the achievement of their city rivals in 1999.

City manager Pep Guardiola has now won the Champions League three times and took his trophy count with City to 12.

The contest was a tight one, with City suffering a serious blow in pursuit of the prize that has eluded them for so long when they lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury in the first half.

The prolific Erling Haaland was also kept quiet by a stubborn Inter side but Rodri eventually made the breakthrough with a firm strike after a Bernardo Silva pass was deflected into his path.

It capped a momentous season for City having also won the FA Cup as well as a fifth Premier League title in six years.

Their success means they also join rivals Manchester United as the only side to have won all three of those trophies in the same season.

It meant mission accomplished for owner Sheikh Mansour, who was present in Istanbul at only his second match since purchasing the club in 2008 and subsequently propelling them to the game’s top table.

Manager Pep Guardiola could also celebrate Champions League success again 12 years after the second of his two wins as Barcelona boss.

Transfer: PSG Renew Interest In Napoli Icon Osimhen

0

Paris Saint-Germain are poised to embark on a colossal mission to secure the services of Victor Osimhen, with the Napoli striker reportedly becoming one of the first requests made by potential new manager Julian Nagelsmann.

The next few weeks promise to be a period of intense speculation surrounding Osimhen’s future.

PSG have long harboured a fondness for the talented Nigerian striker, viewing him as the ideal strike partner for their star player, Kylian Mbappe.

However, any decision regarding Osimhen’s fate will hinge on the appointment of PSG’s new helmsman.

The leading candidate for the role is former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, who happens to be a fervent admirer of the Nigerian forward.

Nagelsmann previously had Osimhen on his radar at Bayern Munich, having identified him as a potential signing.

The interest in Osimhen has resurfaced, with the Parisian club designating him as their primary target for the upcoming season.

According to insiders at Radio Punto Nuovo (as per Tutto Napoli), relations between PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo Campos, and Osimhen’s representatives are excellent.

In recent months, preliminary discussions have taken place between the two parties, hinting at the possibility of a significant move.

However, the definitive turning point in this saga hinges on the appointment of Nagelsmann.

While an agreement is reportedly on the horizon, some minor details still require ironing out.

Sources close to the French club confirm that Osimhen’s name was among the initial requests made by Nagelsmann during talks regarding potential signings.

Although formal negotiations have yet to commence, PSG is gearing up to strike a significant blow in the transfer market.

Osimhen this season scored 31 goals across the UEFA Champions League and Serie A, becoming the first African to win the Italian top-flight’s top goalscorer award.

NPFL: Who Will Be Nigeria Football League Champion?

0

The fullest attendance is expected this Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena as the Nigeria Premier League Championship play-off gets to its peak.

It will be suspense galore as the eventual champion may not be ascertained until about 9pm when the third match of the day will likely end.

Overhead view of Mobolaji Johnson Arena – the battle ground and coronation palace…

Even though front runners have been ascertained, nothing is guaranteed as the title quest has become a three-horse race.

There are two major contenders, leaders, Enyimba and defending champions, Rivers United; a dark horse has merged posing a major threat to the top dogs.

Remo Stars potentially have four possible positions at the end of the series tonight. Should they lose by a two-goal margin, they drop to the fourth, while their current position will be taken by Bendel Insurance.

If they win by a lone goal, they move to the second position if the latter match of front-runners, Enyimba and Rivers United ends in a draw.

If Remo Stars win by 3-0 and both Enyimba and Rivers United draw, Remo Stars will run away with the title.

It will then turn to the old age adage published by the Oxford University Press: “While two dogs are fighting for a bone, a third runs away with it.”

But it will be a nervy wait by Remo Stars if their title dream were to be realised even as it is well known that their clash with Bendel Insurance is grudge-laden.

Enyimba will be attempting to extend their record as the most decorated Nigerian club having won eight titles since their first victory in 2001.

Yet, not many will remember that this great club was once relegated in 1991, the second year of the introduction of professional football in the country.

Rivers United, highly motivated by the previous administration of Nyesom Wike and the sports commissioner, Christopher Green who was grinning the day Rivers United beat Bendel Insurance 2-1.

He reportedly further motivated Rivers United for even more ceaseless flow with a package of N5million.

Should the motivation work, Rivers United will be the runaway champions and the first to achieve back-to-back winning since 2014.

Nigeria leads Group A with nine points from four matches, followed by Guinea Bissau with seven points.
