Exploring New Croton Dam, U.S.A.

1

The New Croton Dam, also known as the Cornell Dam, is an artificial dam built to hold the New Croton Reservoir which is part of the New York City water supply system, located in the town of Cortland, in the State of New York, within the United States of America.

Previously there was another Old Croton Dam, which was built between 1837 and 1842, however, as the demand for water in New York was rising, in 1885 it was ordered for the construction of a new bigger dam.

The construction of the New Croton Dam was a bit controversial at first, as it was intended to be built only 6 km (4 mi) downstream from the Old Croton Dam, which would have been submerged by the new reservoir, together with plenty of public and private buildings, six cemeteries and more than 400 farms.

Designed by Alphonse Fteley, the construction began in 1892, and interesting is that the superintendent of excavations, John B. Goldsborough, even recruited stonemasons from southern Italy to do a good job.

At first, the river was diverted from its natural path to dry the riverbed, so the construction of the masonry dam would be finished, which most of the time was in very harsh conditions.

The initial construction lasted for eight years, and later it took additional six years to complete everything what was intended to be built.

There were complications in 1901 when the Chief Engineer at the Croton Dam, William Hill, was told by one of his masonry inspectors that the work was defective.

It was noticeable that the dam had holes in it through which streams of water gushed, and the core wall would have to be torn down and rebuilt, without sparing anything, including the expenses, as the dam was essential to New York City’s water supply.

The New Croton Dam was completed finally in 1906, with a height of 91 meters (297 feet) and length of 667 meters (2,188 feet), making it very interesting due to the unusual spillway which is part natural and part artificial, forming a beautiful waterfall on the north side.

There is even a bridge that crosses over the waterfall which was replaced in 1975 and again in 2005, but nowadays, only pedestrians and emergency vehicles are allowed to pass.

Hailed to be the second largest hand-hewn masonry, nowadays, the New Croton Dam together with the public park and trail that are next to the reservoir are popular among the locals, especially for hiking and biking, and with the amazing natural surrounding makes a great escape from the urban life.

427,962 Nigerians in Diaspora Get NIN

0

The National Identity Management Commission has registered 427,962 Nigerians in the diaspora since it launched its diaspora enrolment exercise in 2019.

There were at least 1.7 million Nigerians living in the diaspora according to the World Bank. The global bank disclosed this in its ‘The World Development Report 2023: Migrants, refugees, and societies’, report.

It said, “At a lower level of income, Nigeria is home to almost 1.3 million immigrants and is the origin for 1.7 million emigrants.”

In its May 27, 2023, update, NIMC revealed that the number of Nigerians in Diaspora in its database hit 427,962, with 178,799 females and 249,163 males.

NIMC issues 30 million NIN in one year as data base hits 70 million

When NIMC launched the service, it said the exercise was aimed at capturing Nigerians living outside the country into the National Identity Database, ensuring they benefitted from the owning NINs. Without NINs, Nigerians in Diaspora could not renew their passports, and enrolment was not free.

The commission said, “Nigerians abroad, however, also have the choice of enrolling for free whenever they travel back to Nigeria, provided they have valid passports.

“Where, however, their passports have expired, they must obtain their NINs as a prerequisite for renewal of their Nigerian international passports or in order to acquire new passports.”

The service is available in 77 foreign countries according to a list on NIMC’s website. 40 of these countries are African, nine are in Asia/Middle East, 23 are in Europe/Oceania, and five are in the American region.

Meanwhile, NIMC has now captured over 100 million Nigerians into its database. It said, “NIMC’s enrolment figures as of May 27, 2023 currently stand at over 100 million unique records. The highest cumulative enrolment figure of over 10.9 million was recorded in Lagos State.”

So far, 43.28 million females and 56.75 million males have NINs. The top five states with NIN enrolments are Lagos with 10.92 million, Kano with 8.84 million, Kaduna with 6.19 million, Ogun with 4.19 million, Oyo with 3.89 million.

UK Clamps Down on Cryptocurrency Sector

Britain’s financial regulator on Thursday tightened rules over the promotion and selling of cryptocurrency as it seeks to protect consumers.

The Financial Conduct Authority unveiled a package of measures for the industry, which has long faced criticism over the lack of oversight and promises of high returns in a volatile marketplace.

Under the new rules, companies promoting crypto products or services in Britain must from October give a “clear warning” that customers could lose money in “high-risk” investments.

Marketing firms must also introduce a cooling-off period for first-time crypto investors.

And the watchdog will also ban “refer a friend” bonuses that are designed to incentivise crypto investing.

“Our rules give people the time and the right risk warnings to make an informed choice,” said Sheldon Mills, head of consumers and competition at the FCA.

The announcement comes after Britain introduced legislation earlier this year to bring crypto promotions under the scope of the FCA.

UK lawmakers are also demanding that crypto investments in Britain be regulated; in much the same way as the country’s gambling industry.

Reacting to the FCA announcement, the director of operations at industry group CryptoUK, Su Carpenter, said the new rules could prevent fresh entrants.

“There is a risk that this solution will both unfairly concentrate market power for those firms which are already authorised and potentially encourage unauthorised firms to operate from outside of the UK,” Carpenter said.

That could, in turn, create “a competitive disadvantage for UK-based organisations and also potentially undermining consumer safeguards”, she added in a statement.

The FCA clampdown follows moves toward tighter regulation in the United States.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday sued crypto platform Coinbase, charging that the largest US digital currency trading platform made billions of dollars by “unlawfully facilitating the buying and selling of crypto asset securities”.

The SEC has this week also unveiled charges against Coinbase peer Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao for numerous alleged securities law violations.

The news follows the spectacular failure of crypto exchange giant FTX in November, stoking concern over a market dubbed by some critics as the “Wild West”.

He has played 132 games for the club, scoring 24 goals and winning the 2021 German cup.

Bellingham was named Bundesliga player of the season after the 2022-23 campaign when he helped Dortmund to within an inch of their first Bundesliga title in over a decade.

Montreal, Canada - 28 February 2018: Stacked cryptocurrency coins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoins)

Bitcoin and other forms of cryptocurrency have long been a topic of debate and regulatory scrutiny worldwide, and Nigeria has been no exception.

In February 2021, the central bank of Nigeria bank cited concerns over money laundering, terrorism financing, cybercrime and the volatility of cryptocurrencies as reasons for a circular to deposit money banks (DMBs), non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), and other financial institutions (OFIs) to close accounts of persons or entities involved in cryptocurrency transactions within their systems.

The CBN further warned local financial institutions against dealing in crypto-assets or facilitating payments for crypto exchanges.

The directive received significant backlash from the Nigerian public and the cryptocurrency community, as many saw it as a hindrance to technological advancement and economic growth.

However, the government has now taken a surprising new turn by introducing cryptocurrency taxation.

The government said it recognized the growing adoption and economic significance of digital assets and aimed to harness their potential for revenue generation. The federal government surprised many by announcing its decision to tax cryptocurrencies.

By doing so, Nigeria joins the league of jurisdictions currently taxing digital assets, including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Australia, India, Kenya and South Africa.

On December 2, 2022, Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, says there is a provision to tax cryptocurrency and other digital assets in the latest finance bill.

By May 28, 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the 2023 finance bill into law. The law introduces a 10 per cent taxation of gains on the disposal of digital assets including cryptocurrency. The law is in effect from May 1, 2023.

Lionel Messi joins MLS side inter Miami

0

Lionel Messi on Wednesday announced he will sign for major league soccer side inter Miami, choosing the united states as his next destination over a Barcelona reunion or blockbuster deal to play in Saudi Arabia.

The argentine forward has spent the last two seasons at Paris saint-Germain, playing his final game for the club on Saturday, after moving from Barcelona in 2021, where he spent the majority of his career.

Messi said that he did not want to have to wait for Barcelona to find a formula to be able to sign him given their financial situation — they were unable to keep him before his move to PSG, leading to a tearful departure.

MLS and inter Miami confirmed the news on social media.

“I was afraid that it would happen again,” Messi told Spanish newspapers.

“I’ve taken the decision that i am going to Miami, i don’t have (the deal) 100 percent sealed or maybe there’s something left to do, but we decided to continue our path there.

“(I decided) to leave Europe…

“After winning the world cup and not being able to go to Barca, it’s time to go to MLS to live football in a different way and enjoy my day-to-day life more.

“Obviously with the same responsibility and desire to win, and to do things well, but with more calm.”

Inter Miami, co-owned by former England international David Beckham and founded in 2018, sacked coach Phil Neville last week with the team bottom of the eastern conference — with argentine Javier Morales taking over on an interim basis.

The romance of a Barcelona return and prospect of eye-watering riches in Saudi Arabia fell by the wayside as Messi opted to join MLS, with sun-soaked Miami a city he has holidayed in on previous occasions.

Some reports say key MLS sponsors including sportswear brand Adidas and apple TV, who owns the league’s domestic broadcasting rights, may be contributing to his deal.

Stakeholders Roll Out Modalities For Absorption Of Sudan Returnees, Lists 14-Point Procedure For Absorption

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rolled out modalities for the absorption of returnee students from war-torn countries into Nigerian universities.

According to a statement, JAMB Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, revealed that the modalities are follow-ups to the high level meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education(FME), Federal Ministry of Health, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), National Universities Commission(NUC) and other critical stakeholders on the integration of returnee Nigerian students from war-torn countries into the nation’s tertiary education system.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, while presenting the modalities at a virtual meeting with Vice Chancellors of Nigerian universities and other critical stakeholders in Abuja, said it was imperative to hold talks with the Vice Chancellors following the peculiarities of each university and the variation in the responses received from them on the matter.

The Registrar pointed out that the emergency meeting was convened to fashion out uniform standards and minimum acceptable benchmarks for the proposed absorption in line with global best practices.

Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede

He also stated that the Senate of each university had the right to decide on university transfers and do not need to wait for JAMB to initiate such, adding that the parley with the stakeholders was to present the modalities for  critique as well as receive inputs.

Oloyede reminded the Vice Chancellors to key into the earlier Advisory sent to universities on the procedures for processing applications for foreign and domestic inter-university transfers, noting that the current Advisory on the returnees does not override the earlier one, but serves to reinforce it by strengthening the procedures for transfers.

Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, National University Commission NIDCOM and Vice Chancellors of Universities who aligned themselves with the position of JAMB, promised to support the initiative.

The latest Advisory on procedures for emergency transfers of returning students include amongst others, that each of them is mandated to do a retroactive registration with the FME, visit the returnee application page on IBASS as accessible from the JAMB website, where the returnee students would upload their registration slips,  complete the transfer of personal data, which include name, NIN, telephone number, active e-mail account, current university, country, city of study and programme, year and current level of study.
