Exploring Stingray City, Cayman Islands

0

Stingray City is a very popular tourist attraction that is comprised of a series of shallow sandbars which are located in the North Sound of the Grand Cayman Island, that is within the autonomous British Overseas Territory, the Cayman Islands.

The beginnings of this interesting place are not well known, and as it has no city at all, but a large gathering of Southern Stingrays, it is considered that the creatures began showing up there decades ago.

As a matter in fact, fishermen who were returning from an excursion, were actually cleaning their fish far from the mosquitoes that were in large numbers on the island, and they have been throwing the fish guts overboard.

This allured the stingrays to start gathering frequently at the sandbar and feast on the leftovers, which became more of a tradition to the fishermen too. Once realized the great potential of this unusual event, people even began to feed the stingrays by hand.

Soon after, tours and excursions began to be organized, and flocks of people started playing with the very friendly stingrays in their own habitat.

As there are two sandbars, one is located in the shallows which is perfect for those who would like to stay atop the water and snorkel with the waves that are created from the marvelous creatures.

The second sandbar is a little bit deeper, and it allows for visitors to dive and enjoy in the stupendous vistas of the piercing sun in the water which are always interrupted by the amazing stingrays.

The Caymans being a cruising destination with cruise ships arriving all the time, there are always large numbers of visitors all around the water who are always eager to be much closer to the impressive aquatic creatures who do not mind at all the very curios people.

Comoros President Attends The G7 Summit In Hiroshima

0

Azali Assoumani, the president of Comoros,  a country of three islands off south-eastern Africa, has arrived in Hiroshima for the G7 summit.

The Comoros was invited as it is chairing the African Union this year. Normally South Africa attends the summit but Japan has sidelined it for not imposing sanctions against Russia with the rest of the group.

This week’s summit of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies includes eight other guest nations: South Korea, Australia, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Cook Islands.

The Cook Islands was invited as its chair the Pacific Islands Forum and Indonesia chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

India is due to become the third biggest economy by 2030 and is already the world’s most populous, having overtaken China earlier this year.

South Korea is a major Asian economy and a neighbour to host Japan.

Vietnam meanwhile is a close trading partner with China but it’s become cautious of its giant neighbour after Beijing reignited a maritime dispute with it.

Countering China is perhaps the biggest task facing the G7.

Also on the agenda, is the war in Ukraine and the desire to involve other countries in Russia sanctions.

The surprise guest to the party was Ukraine’s president Volodymr Zelenskyy.

The group is made up of seven wealthy democracies including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan and the EU also attends.

The invitations to leaders outside the G7 are meant to extend cooperation to a broader range of countries.

Zimbabwe: Amnesty Frees A Fifth Of Prisoners From Overcrowded Jails

0

Zimbabwe has begun releasing more than 4,000 prisoners under a presidential amnesty that authorities say will help ease congestion in some overcrowded jails.

About 800 prisoners were released on Friday from the Central Prison and Chikurubi Maximum Prison in the capital, Harare. Jails in other parts of the country began releasing prisoners who qualified for the amnesty on Thursday, said Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services spokeswoman Meya Khanyezi.

She said the amnesty would “go a long way in reducing the prison population.” Zimbabwe’s prisons have a capacity of 17,000 but hold more than 20,000 inmates.

Former prisoners mostly complained about overcrowding and other harsh conditions such as a lack of food and proper health care.

Amnesty International has described the conditions as “deplorable.” The Southern African nation of 15 million people regularly uses presidential amnesty to decongest prisons.

A beneficiary of the latest amnesty, John Mafararikwa, who was serving a 17-month sentence for theft, expressed relief,

“It’s overcrowded and the food is bad. Most of the time we would eat food prepared without cooking oil,” said the 71-year-old, boarding a prison bus taking him and other amnesty beneficiaries away from Harare Central Prison.

Song, dance and prayers marked the event. Some people of advanced age walked with the aid of crutches. A small group wore graduation robes after receiving diplomas in bible studies.

At Chikurubi Maximum Prison, freed women prisoners hugged prison officers, while men rushed for the back of an open truck waiting to transport them from the jail. Others thanked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for showing mercy, including the superintendent of Chikurubi prison.

“I am thankful to the President, his Excellency the President Comrade E.D Mnangagwa for this programme. He has done a great job, he has done a good thing for these mothers. It shows that our father the president has women at heart,” Mavis Dzimbanhete said.

All women imprisoned for non-violent crimes and who served a third of their sentences are to be released. Terminally ill people will be released regardless of the crime committed, while blind prisoners and those “who are physically challenged that they cannot be catered for in a prison” had their remaining sentences fully remitted.

Prisoners aged 60 years old and above and juveniles are among the beneficiaries of the amnesty, while those who have been on death row for the past 10 years had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

Zimbabwe still has the death penalty but has not hanged anyone since 2005. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has previously said he is against the death penalty.

Those serving life in prison but have been in jail for the past 20 years will also be freed.

Prisoners who committed violent crimes such as murder, carjacking, human trafficking and sexual offences but have served three-quarters of their sentences are also being released. Those locked up for crimes such as treason, robbery, public violence and sabotaging electricity infrastructure were ineligible for release.

The US space agency has enlisted a second billionaire to help it put astronauts back on the Moon.

NASA is already working with Elon Musk’s SpaceX firm on a descent system based on its novel Starship rocket that will touch down as early as 2025.

It has now also awarded Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos a contract to build a landing craft to take a crew down to the lunar surface later this decade.

His Blue Origin company will produce a more conventional-looking vehicle.

Mr Bezos will have assistance from some well established names in the American aerospace sector, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Draper and Astrobotic.

Blue Origin secured the contract in a competition with Dynetics and Northrop Grumman.

Mr Bezos’s company, which is based in Kent in the US State of Washington, will receive just over $3.4bn (£2.7bn) from Nasa as part of the contract. And the firm will be spending “well north of $3.4bn” of its own money on the project.

“We go to the Moon, to learn, to live, to invent, to create all these things to be successful at the Moon, to go to Mars,” said agency Administrator Bill Nelson.

“The great adventure of humankind pressing out into the cosmos is here. And this is a part of it.”

LP’s Alex Otti Reacts To Judgement On His Candidacy

Alex Otti called on Abians to be calm and not be worried over the judgment.

LN247 earlier reported that the judge of the Federal High Court, Justice M N Yunusa handed down the judgment.

Justice Yunusa ruled that the candidates’ emergence was not in compliance with the provisions of the 2022 electoral act.

Court Nullifies All LP’s Candidature in Abia, Kano

One Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim filed a suit with No FHC/KN/CS/107/2023, against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Acting on the suit, the court ruled that the failure of the Labour Party to submit its membership register to the INEC within 30 days before their primaries renders the process invalid.

According to the governor-elect, there is no cause for concern as the judgement is an unjust decision that cannot undermine the will of the people.

Otti, who spoke in Abia, confirmed that preparations for his scheduled inauguration on May 29 are proceeding as planned.

He declared that the enemies of democracy cannot thwart the wishes of the Abia populace.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has dismissed the court ruling as a futile exercise, emphasizing that it holds no significance.

Exploring Palais de l’Isle, France

0

Palais de l’Isle, better known in English as the Palace of the Isle, is an old fortified house which sits on a small triangular islet by the Canal du Thious, in Annecy, which is the largest city of Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, within the French Republic.

The original construction of the house dates back from 12 century, and this fortified house has been classified as a historic monument of great importance in 1900.

Often referred to as a “gallery house”, at one point of its history, it was turned to prison, courthouse, and administrative center.

The whole structure follows the curves of the islet, and it has somewhat triangular shape which encompasses the edges of the islet that touch Le Thiou Channel.

At the beginning the palace was used as a prison, which was in 1325, when the feudal lord of Annecy paid Jean de Menthoux, the master of the island, to feed two prisoners. Thirty years later, Count Amadeus II of Geneva was granted the right to establish a coin minting workshop in the small castle.

Nevertheless, when Annecy and the Genevois province were attached to the Duchy of Savoy following the demise of the Genevois dynasty, the castle was given to the Monthoux family as a fief, so that subsequently later to be bought by the Dukes of Savoy.

It is at the end of 16 century, when the house was transformed to a courthouse and a prison, however, it housed too the Presidential Council of the Genevois province and the Court of Auditors.

Even when the French Revolution happened, it was used as a prison, until 1900 when it officially became a Historical Monument of the French Republic.

With the restorations, nowadays, this amazing architectural masterpiece is open to the public, where every visitor would be able to see the impressive entrance courtyard, the Banches which is the part where business was conducted, the Coin Mint Wing, the Tower Lodge, the dungeons, the inner courtyard, and the chapel.

The museum exhibits parts of the urban history, heritage and environment of Annecy, making it one of the most attractive points in the city. A true historical treasure kept in great condition by the French Government.

Flooding: Dredging of Rivers Niger, Benue, Kaduna To Gulp Over $20b

0

The Managing Director, Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Abubakar Yelwa says clamour by Nigerians for the dredging of Rivers Niger, Benue and Kaduna to check perennial flooding in affected areas will be difficult for the federal government to handle without intervention from international donor agencies.

Yelwa disclosed this while speaking at the 2023 stakeholders meeting on flood mitigation and other related issues in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, noting that the estimated cost for dredging of the rivers as at 1983 when the federal government asked for the cost was $2billion, adding that the cost had astronomically gone up over 10 times.

The HYPPADEC MD, while responding to suggestions from participants at the meeting to mitigate 2023 flood prediction by the Nigerian Metreological Agency, said the commission would embark on aforestration programme, adding that trees would be planted in five hectares of land in each of the five local government areas in Kwara North senatorial district.

Meanwhile other speakers at the forum called for multi-sectoral approach towards mitigating flood in Kwara state and beyond.
